OSX 10.7 Lion Install Disk

Hello,
I want to place a new SSD HDD in my Macbook Pro 13, but I am facing the problem that I do not have an install disk for the new installation of OSX.
I found some tutorials which described that I have to download the App "OSX Lion" from AppStore and burn the imagefile "InstallESD.img", which is included in the App, to a dvd and from this disk I can install a whole new system.
Since Mountain Lion is released I cannot find "OSX Lion" anymore in AppStore. There is just an App named "OSX Mountain Lion".
Is there a way to get a OSX Lion install disk or do I have to buy OSX Mountain Lion to install a new system?
Regards,
Andreas

Hmm - you face a dilemma. My MBP shipped with Lion, as well, but it still shows up on my Purchases tab because I did actually purchase it just to make a bootable USB flash installation drive. You don't really need to do that, however. What you should do it to save the $20 you'd spend on Mountain Lion and buy a USB drive enclosure. I bought mine from OWC. Here's a user tip on installing a new SSD in place of a hard drive using an enclosure and Carbon Copy Cloner.
It's very simple, actually:
Buy enclosure. Install SSD in enclosure;
Boot from your internal drive. Format your SSD as "MAc OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition using Disk Utility.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your internal drive to your new SSD.
Swap drives and boot from your SSD.
Pretty simple, hunh?
Any more questions? Let us know.

  • Can I use an OSX 10.6.3 install disk to upgrade from OSX 10.5.8

Can I use an OSX 10.6.3 install disk to upgrade from OSX 10.5.8

    Yes. And, see below:
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Mountain lion install disk

i want to make a mountain lion installer disc on a 16gb flash drive for my new macbook air with 10.8.4 already on it (as anybody would), but when i try to option-click the buy button at the app store it says "we could not complete your purchase osx mountain lion is not compatible with this computer". As it's a new computer, this implies an issue--does anyone know what it might be? --BTW following david pogue's mountain lion bk instructions, p 796 here--he also mentions that apple used to sell installer disks with 'lion', but stopped--[wish they hadn't]. i'm off to buy a hard drive so i can archive the whole lot & do it that way--but honestly, apple folks!
    thanks

The Mid 2013 MacBook Air includes a special 10.8.4 build that can't be downloaded from the Mac App Store, so this is the reason why you see a message telling you that Mountain Lion is not compatible with your MacBook Air.
This also means that you can't create a Mountain Lion install USB drive until Apple launches a new OS X update, like 10.8.5, so all Macs will be using the same version and you will be able to download OS X. Anyway, in a new Mac, it's possible that you can only get OS X Mountain Lion from OS X Recovery, preventing you from creating an install USB drive.
What you can do is to use Recovery Disk Assistant > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848 Note that this won't include the installer, so OS X will have to be downloaded from Internet

  • How to completely erase ( no recovery partition remaining) a lion partition with disk utilities on lion install disk?

Where in a  lion install disc made from the installer can I find a bootable file with disk utilities?
I downloaded lion a few hours ago and installed.
I have 4 large hardrives (1.5TB) arranged in 8 partitions to allow me to work on a varied group of projects. I have some projects that need to be worked on with software running under Tiger, some with software that runs under leopard, some with snow leopard, and now Lion. I own multiple copies of software and multiple user pack system install discs.
On a regular basis, I back up chunks of work on projects to external discs, and special backup areas on one of my drives. I don't like using time machine because I am running many operating environments on my mac pro and I don't ever want to be tied to one operating environment for important functionality, and I want to maximize the open space on my hard drives.
Several partitions involve large video files. I am working on them in various versions of final cut, premiere and imovie. Because I have to use the same software versions my different clients are running, I don't want to move all the files " up" to a modern version. It would be professional suicide to stop accommodating my various clients. I say this to try to head off being told to make my clients upgrade. There are too many different clients and they are not going to replace all their equipment.
On these volumes with video files, I often fill them up and copy off what I need to backup before I erase and do a clean install.  I also run VM Fusion and windows XP. I absolutely do not want to have a Recovery HD partition left on the drive when I erase or influencing the other partions using different OS versions on that same drive.
Is there a bootable disc on the installer disk I just made? Can I use the disk utilities to do a low level erase on the lion volume that will remove the recovery partition?
Can I go back to booting from Snow Leopard and erasing the Recovery partition with the drive partition that way? Will the Snow Leopard utility take out the Lion HD recovery partition?
I am used to erasing my drives and rebuilding my machine and I believe it is the right way to use my multiple drives in my workflow. Now that I've got this invisible recovery partition, can you help me remove it and create a bootable disc that includes disk utilities?

I assume the unix pdisk command will show you want is going on.
You may not have a big worry.  There have always been a lot of hidden partitions. Disk Utility under 10.4.11 reports this drive has three (my now report four )  partitions, when pdisk reports that there are 15.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
Press return when done typing sudo pdisk -l

  • I need to buy OSX 10** with Classic install disks

I have to find install disks for OSX 10.1 up to 10.4.11 install discs with Classic. I'm happy to pay for them or for a downloaded copy. If anyone has them please let me know.
    Thanks in advance

Since there aren't any sources for legally downloading them, you'll end up buying each one.  Apple hasn't made any of them available for free download.  Check eBay, as you may be able to find some of them listed.  OS 10.1 is the least desirable one to bother with, because many consider it to be the beta version of OS X.  If you're planning on installing an early version of OS 10, start with Jaguar (10.2.x).  As for running Classic, some of the Power Mac G4 and newer models that shipped with both OS X and a Classic disk (which is run from the OS X installer) included a model-specific OS 9.2.x software build.  The Restore OS 9 disk(s) that shipped with pre-OS X Macs and the retail/universal installer Mac OS 9.x disk won't install on certain models because the disks lack specific components found only on the included Restore disks for that computer.

  • Disk Utility Repair on 10.7 w/o Lion install disk

I ran the Disk Utility and got the message "This disk needs to be repaired. Startup your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."  My iMac is a couple of years old and came with Snow Leopard OS, however I have upgraded to Lion.  So here is my question: will Disk Utility properly repair a Lion startup disk (i.e. my hard drive) using a snow leopard OS installation disk as the start up volume?  Here's another twist: can I create a new Lion startup volume to run Disk Utility from that?  Thanks in advance and Happy New Year.

    Try this:
Restart while holding command-r until you see the Apple.  This should put you into the "Recovery Partition" from which you can run Disk Utility.

  • Downloaded OSX updates won't install - disk doesn't meet requirements

I also posted this in the Mac Mini section, so please excuse the double posting.
Brand new Mac Mini 2012  2.3 quad Core i7.   When attempting to install any Mountain Lion updates downloaded from Apple support site (10.8.2 combo, 10.8.2, or 10.8.2 Supplemental update), installers will not proceed and says "Can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements..."
Happened on two identical brand new mac Minis with no other data on them, and Apple senior tech support said they had never seen it and had nothing else to try after wiping the drives and reinstalling several times.
App Store was not showing updates, so I downloaded and tried to install from installers on Apple's download site (never worked). When App store eventually  found and installed the 10.8.2 update (after OSX reinstall) , the 10.8.2 supplemental update did not show up.
Just curious if anyone else has seen or could duplicate this issue.

You have to install a special OS X Mountain Lion update > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1603

  • Need to create a Lion install disk

I am on the side of those who think this is recovery method is absolutely stupid.  I want a USB drive (and I'm not paying $68 for it, since I could buy 10 8GB USB flash drives for that amount of cash, and Lion is supposed to be included for us) with the whole installation disk.  I travel a lot, and although I've only had to use recovery disks once, it was in a place without internet, so I would be up the creek under this new Apple "innovation."
So, I have a new MBP.  Of course, it came with Lion.  I cannot figure out a way to download Lion to create a Lion installer.  If I go to the App store, it says "installed".  I can't do anything there.  I don't think Apple saved more than $1 in production costs for a Lion DVD installer, so this is truly annoying.
How can I get the Lion disk image to get the installer onto a flash drive, so that I can save my Mac, just in case?  I know how to creat the installer, but I need Lion.
And I'm going to head over to the complaint department to register my annoyance at this.  I mean why couldn't they have included a USB flash drive in the brand new box?  I actually looked, believe it or not.

    Here you go.
Follow the instructions in this link to download the InstallESD.dmg file for your new MBP so you can create a USB thumb drive installer. I have a Mac Mini mid-2011 and the instructions worked great. The only thing that might not work right is restoring the InstallESD.dmg to your bootable thumb drive. It might get to the end then fail. If this happens, just dblclick the .dmg file to mount it and restore the 'Mac OS X Install ESD' to the thumb drive. I have used mine to reinstall Lion with and without an internet connecton. It works great.
I think there might be a slightly easier way to do this.  I could start up in the Recovery function, but tell it to install to another drive (not my MBP).  When the Mac reboots, just hold down the option key, and then restart back into my MBP.  Dig through the file on the other drive for the Mac OSX InstallESD.dmg, and move it over to the USB or anything.  Then I can restore Mac Lion without the internet, then use Time Machine to rebuild everything.  Easy.

  • Making OS Lion Install Disk *after* Installation

I installed OS Lion and I want to create a boot up disk only for OS Lion in case if anything goes wrong later and I checked online, but its all before the installation. Any idea how to create boot up disk after OS Lion installation? Thanks a lot.

Redownload the Lion installer app.  Do not run install.
Copy the app to a USB thumb drive.  Then, on each of
the machines you want to install Lion on, copy the installer
to the Application folder and then launch the installer from
    there.
I have used this procedure on my 4 macs without any
    problem.

You need to watch more updated videos. Do as I suggested earlier and read the documentation. All is explained including how you download the drivers. The video you were watching must be a few years old and well out of date.

  • Panther Install disks get ejected on attempt to uprgrade from OSX 10.1

I just bought a used Powermac G4 877 Mhz that had OS 10.2 installed. It has upgraded memory, ungraded Pioneer Combodrive (DVD-RW CD-RW)and an updated video card. I have Panter OSX 10.3 (Panther) Install disks. My goal was to upgrade this new G4 to 10.3 with these disks.
I first used the seller's 10.1 Install disks to clean out the system and start from scratch. Then I attempted to load my 10.3 Install disks to begin the installation. I held down the "c" key as you are supposed to when you restart the OS but instead of coming up in the Installer, the 10.3 disks for ejected and the operating system booted into 10.1.
I'm not sure if this symptom is related but I notice that there is no sound coming from Playing iTunes songs after I installed OS10.1
I'm taken a step backward because when the Mac was sold to me I checked out from the Profiler that the OS was v10.2. Now I'm at v10.1 and don't have a way to get to 10.3 because of this problem.
Any suggestion on fixing this problem would greatly be appreciated. What happened and how do I fix it?

For whatever reason, the sypmtoms of this problem went away just by re-doing the installation of OS X 10.1 from the original installation disks and downloading a few security updates to 10.1 until the OSX 10.1 Updater said I was "up to date".
After this install, I was able to load my 10.3 Panther install disks w/o them being ejected and w/o a non-response (i.e., no error diaglogs and no appearance of my installation CD on the desktop) from OS 10.1.
If anyone cares to offer up a reason for why near-identical recreaation of the steps resulted in the original problem, I would be interested in hearing.

Hi. I recently added boot camp and windows 8 to my 2011 mbp 17". Ever since the install my computer wont boot osx unless i run disk utility and repair my mac partition. Then everything runs fine untill i go into windows again and then go back to osx.  Thoughts?

    mcwilliamsc wrote:
Do i need to make a clone or will my time machine backup work.
TimeMachine drives are not "hold the option key bootable" like a clone and with Lion there is only a "hold Command r"  Recovery Partition on the same drive your trying to repair.
So to get a external source to boot Lion, you need to Carbon Copy Cloner Lion to a another new/blank Disk Utility HFS+ Journaled formatted drive. Disconnect your TimeMachine drive before doing anything and don't clone to it or everything will be erased, use another drive.
Once you have Lion cloned, hold option and boot from the Lion clone and test it out.
    mcwilliamsc wrote:
I only have one external drive andni dont think a clone will fit.
Only clone to another drive with no data on it, don't clone to a partition, don't clone to a TimeMachine drive. Disconnect all other drives before cloning so you don't make a mistake.
    mcwilliamsc wrote:
Also when you say c boot do you mean using a lion install disk as opposed to the install option when you boot into disk utility?
Your signature says you have 10.6.8, obviously there are no install disks for 10.7, however you can make some by "hold option" and clicking on Purchases in the MacAppStore and redownloading the Lion installer (but don't install)
Follow these directions to make multiple "hold c" bootable DVD copies of the Lion installer.
    http://eggfreckles.net/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
Test the disks out, you can see it's just like the 10.6.8 installer disk with Disk Utility and everything.
With a Lion DVD one can install Lion AND the Lion Recvoery Partition on a new or totally erased drive, like we are about to do.
When you clone Lion, it only clones the Lion OS X partition, not the Lion Recovery Partition. So by totally erasing the entire disk and installing Lion from the DVD can the Lion Rececovery Partition and Lion OS X partition be restored and your GPT repaired and your firmware flushed.
So once you got a Lion clone disconnect it, then c boot from the DVD and erase your ENTIRE Lion internal drive, this means you have to select the drive makers name on the left, HFS+ journaled of course.
Once that is competed, install Lion fresh, this will create both the Lion OX  partition and the Lion Recovery Partition.
When that is finished, don't bother booting into the fresh Lion install, simply option boot off the Lion clone and reverse clone onto the Lion OS X partition, this will place back Lion, all your programs and files just like before.
Then you should be back to normal, your GTP is fixed, EFI is fixed (reboot twice) and you have everything except the Windows bootcamp partition.

  • I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro that has lion installed when I recieved it, according to the support pages AHT is supposed to work over the internet if it wasn't installed, Mine wasn't and it doesn't work. Where can I download it from?

I Have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro, I recieved it with OSx 7.2 lion installed, I need to us AHT (apple hardware test) according to the support page that I copy here
    Additional Information
Apple Hardware Test is included on the DVDs that are shipped with some Macintosh computers. If the copy on your hard drive becomes unavailable, use the DVDs to run Apple Hardware Test.
For Intel-based Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4  or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1  and should be included with your computer.
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install  Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead.
This doesn't work as the additional information statement says it should above.  Could someone at apple give me an idea of where to get it or what the "REAL" solution is, since it doesn't work on an internet version which was confirmed today at the Genius Bar in the Apple store.
    Please help me

Thanks, while it worked on yours it doesn't work on mine, any other ideas?
Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • Can I upgrade to Tiger on my iBook G4 with a PowerMac G4 Install Disk?

I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9 Panther on my iBook G4 and I want to upgrade to Tiger OSX 10.4. I could possibly upgrade to Leopard, but it may be too much for my system according to Apple's website.
My father purchased a used copy of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger from eBay and the person told him that it was an original base version of Tiger and would run on any Mac. But when the disk arrived it says that it is for a "PowerMac G4 Software Install and Restore Disk 1 of 1". So I am not sure if this is only designed for the PowerMac desktop computer, or if it can be used safely and 100% compatible on my iBook G4 laptop.
I took my laptop to the Apple Store and asked the Genius Bar techs who told me that the "firmware" is different on the PowerMac than on my iBook and the disk that I was sent was only for the PowerMac.
When I read the "read-me" file on the disk, it did not indicate that it was only for a PowerMac only or whether it would work fine on any Mac computer or laptop. So my main question is this: Will this disk work and be compatible with my iBook G4, or was it designed only for the PowerMac?
Has anyone had any problems with compatibility on an iBook if they used a different computer's OSX 10.4 Tiger install disk?
If there are problems, where can I find a generic in-the-box version of Tiger or an iBook specific version of Tiger?
If I install a "used" original version of Tiger am I still eligible for all of the software updates from Apple for OSX 10.4, just like I have been with my current OSX 10.3 Panther?
    Thank you for your help!

    Aaron:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Computer specific install disks are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and even if you manage to install it without incident, you may end up having issues post installation.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from AllMac or FastMac. You can also purchase Tiger on eBay if you know what you are looking for. Read all documentation carefully, ask questions of the seller to be sure that you are getting the Full Retail Version. Here are some current offerings on eBay.
    Good luck.
