OSX 10.7, SSDs, TRIM, and so on...

Okay, so I have played with Windows 7 Home Premium on this wonderful little Booklet 3g for some time now. I hate it.
I am a Mac guy, through and through, and this will never change.
I have been running both Linux Mint 11 and Ubuntu 11.04 for the past two weeks and love them on the Booklet 3g, but the same ugly moster rears its head at every turn - the GMA 500 chip. What a lame and disappointing choice!
I found a Poulsbo driver for Ubuntu that *sort of* works (anecdoatal information - I have yet to try it) and a terminal apt-get command to (I think) install the same exact file in Mint 11. It works, but the cursor flickers non-stop and a lot of the tasty features of the GMA 500 are still locked out. At least the resolution is correct and looks great. Nice!
So, the main problems with putting on my retail Mac OSX disc (purchased just for such a project) was that the GMA 500 is not supported at all and there is NO SOUND - in OR out! This is a deal breaker for me as I am a musician and use Finale as my killer app. I MUST have working sound.
So no OSx86 foolishness (ahem - testing) for this Booklet right now.
However, Lion is WAY faster than anything ever in the line of OSX versions, AND it now has TRIM support for all Macs. (Recent versions of Snow Leopard have had it for MacBook pros that have the SSD option.)
With Lion being so cool (multitouch wonders and TRIM) and so fast, the idea of upgrading my Nokia with a decent SSD is now very attractive. And I may reinstall Win7HP, but will probably just stay with Linux Mint 11. If the OSx86 community manages to figure out Lion for this computer I might go that route as well as I would love to make this more comfortable and familiar to me if I am to use it a lot on the road as a Finale box.
Questions (after all that - sorry!):
If I am to use something OTHER THAN WINDOWS as my OS (the most likely scenario for thus netbook) which SSD would be the best choice for me? Does this even matter? I do not know if Mint has TRIM support, but Lion does for certain. Will that affect my choices?
With the plethora of Linux distros out today, which one seems to work best with this hardware setup? Joli OS (formerly JoliCloud) supports GMA 500 BEAUTIFULLY but is not a full OS. In my experience you have to have a connection even to get to the desktop. It is not cloud-based as they claim, but cloud-centric. If you are offline it is useless, or so my experiences have been. I HOPE this is incorrect as I really like the Joli OS quite a lot. Mint is do-able with tweaks for the GMA 500. Eveything else *just works* as it should. I like it. Any reason to change?
TRIM support is really needed isn't it? I do not fully understand it, but am stoked that the Mac OS now comes with it. Now I can try SSDs in my new iMac 27" i5 (it has the capability but is probably not fun to install. I will have to see about this.
Thanks for reading this rambling post. I have a lot of great ideas for this netbook, but because of the GMA 500 chip it seems like a lot of interest has waned. Shame about the RAM, too. What an idiotic idea. Oh, and the PATA/SATA bridge. Oh, dear. Maybe I need to sell this thing after all... ;-)

In practicality you can't. You can set the preference in the Privacy pane of the Safari preferences to ask websites not to track you, but I don't believe Google honors that setting, and they most certainly store all sorts of cookies which you probably will get even if you set Safari to block all cookies since web programmers have ways around those blocks. All you can do is delete the cookies and other junk on a regular basis. Many cookies hide, so I use Cookie from SweetP productions which does a good job of deleting most if not all of the cruft web sites leave.

  • SSD Trim and recovery software

I have a crucial MX100 512G ssd and I know the windows 10 SSD optimize tool is SSD trim. However, after I ran the SSD optimization showing 100% trimmed, I noticed the trim didn't work because I could still recover my deleted files via data recovery software ( such as disk drill and others). Does it mean TRIM function will not wipe the block unless I do secure erase on the SSD, and people can still recover their deleted files even the SSD has TRIM function?  I thought if SSD has TRIM, deleted data could not be recovered. ( I even left the computer idle over night, and I could still recover the files I deleted).

dummykid, have you checked files integrity after the recovery? That is, for example, if you have recovered .jpg file with a photo were the photo viewable?
The main function of TRIM is not to make data unrecoverable. Making data unrecoverable is a side effect of TRIM, one could say.
When a file is deleted from the drive the space it used to occupy should be TRIMmed and usually it occurs very fast. Recovery tools however, can still usually find the file with its name and attributes (size). This is because some data about old/deleted files can still be left in MFT (master file table) area.
When you delete data from the drive TRIM sends information to the SSD controller to help it clear the corresponding NAND parts. But I belive that the MFT works the same way with or without TRIM, that is it still stores some data related to deleted files, like name and size. But it is file content you really want to recover, not the file name and attributes only. Recovery tool will find the name and attributes of the file and it will recreate that file with the data taken from the drive, but the data itself can be completely different from the original or even empty. Check that out!
On my SSD I can 'recover' many photos (.jpg files) but they are unreadable, some of them have some random data and some have no data inside.

  • SSD, TRIM, and Yosemite

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that is showing its age.  I decided a few weeks ago to perform an upgrade; to up the RAM from 4 to 8, and install an SSD, especially since the rave reviews I have read and the price drop over the last year or so.  This has led me to read many many reports about possible issues with 3rd party SSD and how Apple has decided to update Yosemite that will not allow TRIM function.  I'm curious is there anyone out there that can provide some real insight and knowledge.  I know that there is a hack to disable the settings so you can still use TRIM, but I also read that for some of the new SSD you really don't need it.  I don't know if that is true. And researching website after blog after message board, to hear both sides and I'm really up in the air.   I can't afford a new laptop, but also can't  afford to dump a couple hundred bucks into my current unit only to have it slow down over a short period of time, putting me back to square one.  Not to derail the thread before it gets going but also wanted to see what everyone's opiniin is for brand of SSD.  I'm leaning toward Samsung 850 evo but also like the comparable version of Crucial.  My unit only supports SATA II, so maybe there is a better bang for my buck since that limitation.

Here is an article from the OWC blog on TRIM:
    http://blog.macsales.com/21641-with-an-owc-ssd-theres-no-need-for-trim
I found this question and answer at the bottom of the article about the speed issue. In the answer, it's noted that the limitation exists on all 6G drives on his computer. Does that mean all 6g drives or just their Mercury 6g drives? I don't know the answer to that, but from what it implies, it means any 6g drives.

As I finally installed OS X Yosemite on OWC SSD and I tested it for speed…
But what should be the speed (read/write) on my new SSD, because I tested it yesterday (with Blackmagic Disk Speed Test) and it shows only write: 110MB read: 135MB is it possible???

Those speeds are normal for a 6G SSD in your iMac. As mentioned in the compatibility section of the 240GB Mercury Electra 6G SSD, A 6G SSD will only run at SATA 1.0 (1.5G aka 150MB/s) on certain Macs. This is due to the Nvidia SATA controller found in these computers not being able to properly down clock a SATA 3.0 6G SSD to the expected SATA 2.0 3G your computer is capable of. This limitation exists on all 6G drives on your computer.
As I said, check your model identifier and check to see if it is affected. Not all models are affected by this. If your computer is one of the affected models, then you will have to decide on taking a chance on other 6g SSD brands. They may be fine, but I just don't know.
Please remember that I'm not trying to put down other brands or steer you to an OWC. It's what I have and I can't comment on other brands because I've not tried any.

  • TRIM and SSD Question

    Hi all,
    I have just bought:
    Crucial CT240M500SSD1 2.5-inch 240GB M500 SATA 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive
for my Macbook pro 2009 model. I plan to install OSX Mountain lion on it (OSX 10.8). I was woundering after reading about TRIM etc, when i have plugged the SSD in, and installed the operating system do i need to enable TRIM or will it be on by default?
    Thanks

You certainly can and many do.
I have my own way of setting up a new drive as shown below.  Mainly because I want a fresh start.
Power down my computer and remove the power charger and dispense static electricity.
    1.  Format new SSD or HDD (Mac OS Extended Journaled).  External enclosure is needed for this.
    2.  Remove the internal HDD (the one being replaced) (FIRST dispense static electricity).
    3.  Install new internal drive (SSD or HDD)
    4.  Install OS on new SSD or HDD
    5.  Install apps
    6.  Connect the drive removed and move data, pictures, videos, etc to the new drive (use external enclosure).
Make sure you have a solid backup of your important data

  • SSD Trim in 10.6.7

Trim for SSD in Mac OS X 10.6.7?????

There is an entry and has been for awhile in System Profiler going back to about when SSDs were included as BTO in Macs.
    thessdreview
To step back a bit, the process of deleting a file with SSDs is such that the index is simply removed which tricks the system into believing the space is available. This issue was recognized early on where extreme slowing was observed in SSDs that had reached the point where all their space had been written to because, then, writing a block of data meant reading the are to be written to, deleting old data and then writing new data.
TRIM then came along where data blocks with deleted files were cleared automatically long before new data had to be written. This then ensured a faster SSD as the process of writing was simply reading the block to ensure it was clean and then writing the information.
Wear Leveling algorithms are a process whereby the firmware can actually ensure that each block of NAND is used evenly.

  • Bootcamp - OSx on one hard drive and windows 7 64bit on another hard drive

I have browsed the forum and the net without getting a clear answer
    Fact:
With optical bay and two hard drives there is a posibility to use two harddrives within the sam MacBook Pro. The reason is space and speed, I want loads of space to all my projects and i want to use SSD that are not so spacious.
    Need:
I want OSx on primary hard drive, and win7 64bit on the drive in the optical bay, replacing the DVD.
    Question:
Is there a posibility to set up bootcamp this way, and how does one procede to land in this solution.
Please help me with a clear answer.
    // Daniel

Installing on multiple drives of course can be done.
I consider it normal, common sense approach.
Anyone with a Mac Pro (not laptop) or PC.
Dedicated boot drives for each OS.
    Dedicated data drives.

  • Any ideas on the best Config for RAID-0 on the Precision M6800 using SSD's (and the mSATA slot)

Hi,  I have an M6800 on order that has a single 500GB 7200RPM hard drive.  I am going to upgrade the storage the day it arrives (removing the 500GB drive and not utilizing it at all).  I plan on setting up an SSD RAID-0 array and want to take advantage of the mSATA slot if possible.
I thought of using the 2TB 2.5" Seagate/Samsung Momentus SpinPoint ST2000LM003 hard drive for storing unused vhd\vhdx files as well as video and photos,  then using an SSD RAID array for the OS, Applications, Data and any active vhd's.
Is it possible to set up RAID-0 using the mSATA SSD slot and the primary internal hard drive slot?  I want to use those 2 drive connectors so I can still use the 2TB 2.4" regular notebook hard drive without removing the Blu-Ray Writer?  I plan to write video to Blu-Ray discs that will be stored on the internal 2TB drive, so removing the optical drive is something I want to avoid.
As a general question, Is there any advantage to using RAID with SSD's, or would a single 1TB mSATA SSD in the mSATA slot be nearly as fast in real world use as a 2 disk SSD RAID?  Would I have a noticibly quicker boot time and application load time if using SSD RAID?  I know the speed test specs show large increase in performance, but will the computer really run a lot faster with 2 x 500GB SSD in RAID-0 as opposed to getting a single 1TB SSD card for the mSATA slot?
I was planning on getting the Samsung Evo 840 SSD 2.5" drive and the matching Evo 840 mSATA card.  There is a Samsung 850 series drive, but it is only available in 2.5" (mSATA is not available in the 850 as far as I can  tell).
Please suggest the best solution that is compatible with the M6800 or provide any information that might help.
    Thanks

    Hi Ential,
Thanks for the info, I thought my question would go unanswered forever.  I posted the question in January, and I have since set up the computer.  Below I will detail my research and the configurations of drives that I have used on my M6800 since the time I posted the question you answered.  Perhaps the results of my research and testing might help you.
I originally I bought the same exact model SSD's that Dell sells with the computer thru their website;    the LiteOn 512GB drives (mSata & SATA),  I configured them in RAID-0.  The LiteOn drives are sold under the brand name Plextor,  I found the proper model numbers by looking at the SSD drive firmware upgrade file from the Dell support website.
From what I understood,  my RAID-0 drive consisting of the 2 LiteOn drives had impressive performance using the AS SSD benchmark program,  I was getting performance scores over 1600 back in February.
I have since changed to the Samsung EVO 850 1TB drives and again created a RAID-0 drive,  one SATA drive and one mSata drive totaling 2TB.  This drive array is getting AS SSD performance scores over 1900.  I contacted Samsung to get some advice on the configuration of the drives and I got some interesting advice that seemed to help a lot:
Samsung told me to leave 200GB of the drives (100GB each) unallocated when I partitioned the drives,  this is generally referred to as "overprovisioning" (which you probably knew already).  I initially thought that overprovisioning could only be configured by the Samsung Magician software and a special process needed to take place to tell the firmware to utilize a specific amount of drive space for overprovisioninng.  The Samsung support agent told me that the Samsung SSD firmware (on both mSata and SSD) automatically uses any unallocated space as overprovisioned space (they are basically the same thing to the drive firmware) and it increases performance in a very  noticible way when you have sustained use of the drive and/or durinng the time in between the TRIM process (garbage collection).  The unallocated space is used by  the firmware to write data to while blocks of data are awaiting internal wiping initiated by the TRIM process.
Since I have 200GB of unallocated space,  I am able to have more sustained deletion and writing of data between TRIM/Garbage Collection runnninng than I would ever utilize without affecting the performance of the drive.  Basically most SSD drives have performance decrease throughout  the day until the TRIM process is completed by the drives firmware,  so Samsung instructed me to leave at least 10% of the drive space unallocated to limit that problem.  Smaller drives likely need a higher percentage of space unallocated as compared to larger drives since the daily amount of read/write operations is typically the same regardless of drive size.   The amount  of space left unallocated/overprovisioned is based upon the amount of read/write operations done on any given drive,  not based on the size of the drive itself.  If you run drive intensive applications, you would then want to overprovision more GB of drive space,  if you have light use of the drive then you can overprovision/unallocate less GB of drive space (all of the configuration info regarding overprovisioning and TRIM was given to me by a Samsung specialist over the telephone - I called their tech support phone number and got a storage specialist to talk to me).
I will look into the SATA version on the optical bay,  I never thought about that with this computer.  My prior computer was a Dell XPS 17 3D (L702X) notebook which had 2 internal 2.5" SATA,  in which I installed an optical bay drive.  On that specific computer the optical bay was technically an SATA 3,  but due to design constraints it couldnt run at that speed since there was voltage leakage across some pathways in the chipset when the optical bay has read-write throughput that is typical of a hard drive (as opposed to much less data transfer typically seen on an optical drive).  The M6800 can be factory configured with an optical bay hard drive, so I suspect it can support one properly.  The XPS 17 was not available with an optical bay drive as an OEM configuration from Dell,  so it couldnt be expected to properly support one.  The design issue with the voltage leak across the chipset pathways on the XPS 17 was known by Dell,  but due to the low bandwidth of an optical drive, the problem never occured with any of the factory OEM configurations.
It is possible that the optical bay  hard drive offered by Dell (the exact OEM Drive installed by Dell) could have an internal limitation to SATA 2 due to a similar design limitation.  It would not be surprising if an SATA channel designed for optical drives had SATA 2 speed since I suspect there is no SATA Optical drives that could use more than 3GB/s of data anyway.
I purchased 2 of the 2TB 2.5" hard drives that Dell uses for OEM configurations for this computer,  they are Samsung 5400 RPM drives.  I have one in a 2.5" internal bay and the other in the optical bay - I converted my Blu Ray Recorder/Writer drive to an external drive.  I will do some extended time speed tests on the optical bay drive to see if its performance matches the internal drive (which  is the same exact model drive - I have 2 of the same Seagate 2TB drives installed with the same firmware).
I use the pair of 2TB drives to store .vhd and .vhdx drives for test platforms for Hyper-V machines.  The virtualized servers with high hard drive utilization get moved to the SSD RAID-0 array,  the rest are stored on the 4TB rotational drives.
If you have any questions or comments for me,  please let me know.  I will see what info I can find on the optical bay SATA revision for this notebook,  I am very curious to find out if it is in fact SATA 2.  I will let you know what my test results are,  I will try to use the AS SSD benchmark program,  I believe it will work with rotational drives,  otherwise I will find another benchmark utility - do you have a recommendation on which to use?
Thanks again for your info and for pointing out the possible limitation of the optical bay..

You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express

Next problem is that when moving through the installer and get to custom install, as I only want to install iDVD and iWeb, I am presented with the option to install iDVD, Sounds & Jingles and iWeb, but not sure what is going on with the other 3 options iLife Support etc, they seem to be greyed out but still look like they may install over the top of the newer versions already on my imac. Is it ok for me to just go ahead and hit install? Or do I have a problem?

Yep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates.
