OSX 10.8.2 Upgrade on Mac Pro (4,1) Sleep issue

After updating my Mac Pro (4,1) to OSX 10.8.2, computer goes to sleep too soon even when Computer sleep in Preference's Energy Saver is set to "Never." I can have the DVD player open and playing a movie, then the computer won't sleep, but if I stop the player, the computer will go to sleep after a couple of minutes regardless of where the Computer sleep pointer is set in Preference's Energy Saver.

hmm....!!! My Mac Pro (4.1) 10.8.2 computer have the exactly oposite problem.
It do not go automatically to sleep (system preferences / Energy Saver Settings).
Only the display go to sleep. Mac stays awake.
When I press the power button on my mac pro it go to sleep, though
(Or if I use the apple menu and manually make my mac sleep).
Here is my situation.
a) Before Mountain lion I had my mac "never sleep" (in system preferences / Energy Saver).
b) After Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 I decided that I wanted to set my computer to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity and leave it open all day.
c) I Configured the System Preferences / Energy Saver to sleep after 15 minutes.
The computer closes the display but not the mac (mac don't go to sleep).
If I manually put my mac to sleep (hardware button or mac os x menus), it goes to sleep.
The workflow I followed was the below (did not succeed until now).
1) Repaired Permissions with Disk Utility.
2) Cleared ACL's with BatChmod on my users/myhomefolder.
3) Did a system cleanup with Onyx.
4) Reseted NVRAM / PRAM --> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
5) Reseted the System Management Controller (SMC)  --> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
6) Booted in Safe Mode and try the automatic sleep there --> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
7)Checked for unfinished "printing jobs" (queue) in system preferences / printers.
8) Booted on a clean install of mac os x mountain lion that I had on an external drive and try to see if my mac goes to sleep.
9) Turned off any "Sharing" I had on in system preferences (I had on the File Sharing and the Screen Sharing because I Use iTeleport a lot).
10) I Killed any application that might block the mac from go to sleep (i.e. Dropbox (lan sync = off), VLC Streamer, iTeleport, Boxcryptor).
11) I Created a new account, then logged out from my account and logged into the new account (so that no "keep awake the mac" programs load at startup.
12) I used the console and the command "pmset -g assertions" at some steps to check if something was wrong there (and by eliminating all the possible "suspect" elements I had finaly my system reporting the following
Here is the command that you should execute on terminal.

So, the conclusion is that
a) I don't know If the problem exist before 10.8.2 update.
b) My Mac Pro 4.1 goes to sleep when I make it to sleep (by pressing once the hardware power button of my mac or by clicking with the mouse "apple menu/sleep")
c) My mac does not go to sleep automatically through the "System Preferences/Energy Saver" even when I set it to go to sleep after one minute. (only the display go to sleep, not the mac).
d) In the system Information (about this mac) under the "power" menu I got
System Power Settings:
  AC Power:
  System Sleep Timer (Minutes):          1
  Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes):          10
  Display Sleep Timer (Minutes):          1
  Sleep on Power Button:          Yes
Automatic Restart on Power Loss:          No
  Wake on LAN:          No
  Current Power Source:          Yes
  PrioritizeNetworkReachabilityOverSleep:          0
Hardware Configuration:
  UPS Installed:          No
The fact that I see those settings here too, leads to the conclusion that the "new settings" that I configured in the "System Preferences/Energy Saver" earlier, are "saved" correctly.
e) Even in "Safe Mode", the mac do not go to sleep automatically (only manually).
So can anyone help? What could be wrong and my mac do not sleep automatically in Mountain Lion 10.8.2 ?

  • Why can´t I upgrade my Mac Pro to OS Mountain Lion?

Being a person with great interest in photography, video and moviemaking I made a big personal investment a couple of years ago in buying what I thought was the best available computer on the market for multimedia projects for the time being, that is a well equiped Mac Pro (Processor 2x3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Memory 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM). After that I also upgraded my Mac Pro with a better graphic card (ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB) and extra HDD´s Up till now there has been no problem to upgrade my computer to every new realesed OS software  (latest OS X Lion 10.7.04) from Apple, but when recently trying to download the latest version of OSX, that is Mountain Lion, this posibility seems to have come to an endpoint! When I try to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I get the message that this is not possible with my Mac Pro (in which I for sure totally up til now have invested at least 70-80 000 swedish kronor (10 - 12 000 dollars).
Is this really so, and if so, why has Apple in this way seemingly abandoned all those earlier loyal customers over the world who by investing their money in Apple´s Pro line of products like Mac Pro´s, have contributed so much in building the good reputation and economic ground for the development of Apple in becoming such a sucessful company? Even if Mac Pro still is a strong and competive computer for the time being, this discontinuation of softwaresupport for the big stock of sold Mac Pro computers world wide, remarks a crossroad from where in the long run, Mac pro´s will become useless and therefore also worthless in such an extent that heir owners once more have to make investments in new hardware from Apple, taking for granted that they find it still being a value in being trustful to the Apple line of computer products.
While a company as a rule always willl find ways to make investments in new hardware of great quality if this is calculated to increase the income of the company, the sitaution is totally different for all independent and creative people over the world who have a much lower budget for their projects and as a rule get no profit from their work but their personal joy and emotional satisfaction.
Do I really have to through my Mac Pro away (it will probably be impossible to sell it to a worthy price after Apple now has discontinued supporting the development of  it´s OS ) or do I have to buy a new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display and Thunderbolt Interface of latest version in order to feel safe in continuing using Apple´s Pro applications for multimedia projects foor the future with reliable continued support from Apple (and in that case for how long I ask myself), or is there any possibility to upgrade the hardware of my Mac Pro in order to upgrade to latest OS software and still feel being a member of the sanctioned Apple club?
Alternatively, maybe Apple can help all Mac Pro owners to make it possible to upgrade to needed Apple hardware and software line of their Pro applications, and thus continue to support Apple in using and inspire developing their products and Pro market shares as well as continue to spread their good reputation in this area, in supporting these reliable customers in some way, as an example by giving a discount to all Mac Pro owners upgrading to a new computer from Apple.
Maybe this in fact is the first step from Apple in a plan to soon stop selling the model Mac Pro because the latest compact Mac Book Pro´s already has exceeded the old clumpsy Mac Pro´s in function, versatility and potential for future development. If so this Apple´s decision is logic and understandable, but please don´t abondon all customers of Mac Pro´s all over the world  who have been utterly fidele to Apple in helping the Company to spread the good reputation of Apples computers to ordinary people through the years and thus to a great extent have contributed in buildning the necessary market expectations that have made it possible for Apple to develop and sell new products to a continuing growing market by fulfilling and helping ordinary peoples daily needs. I believe that without these earlier pioneers and supporters of Apple´s ever innovative productline, its not taken for sure the Apple Company should have reached this all time incredible height of success we all can witness today...
    Sincerely
    Stefanis

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

  • How can I upgrade my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro. Here are the specs :
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    MacPro1,1
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
When OS 10.6 came out, I found out that I couldn't upgrade to it because of my graphic card. In the technical specifications it is mentioned that :
    OpenCL
requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
    ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870
Now, OS 10.5.8 is becoming more and more outdated. I would like to know how can I upgrade my Mac Pro ? What kind of graphic card can I put in ?
Thank you for any help and/or information !

It's been a while since I've used it but I installed Snow Leopard on my old Mac Pro 1,1 with the 7300GT and it worked. OpenCL may not have but the rest of it did. I don't think what you've quoted says you can't upgrade but only that an upgrade won't deliver all of the features in Snow Leopard. Indeed, I was able to move the HD in the 1,1 Mac Pro into the 5,1 Mac Pro, boot from it (10.6.4 is the minimum the 2010 Mac Pro will boot with), clone it and then updated it.

  • How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum extract.

    Hello
How far is it possible to upgrade a Mac Pro mid-2010 to the maximum performance. I would be interested how far one could come close to the performance of the new Mac Pro 2013, or is it hopeless.
    My computer
    Mac Pro
    mid-2010
    Processor 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 14 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Please excuse my english is not the best because.

    For what apps?
Okay, you have the slower 2.4GHz processors, most have found that MHz still rule and matter, meaning a 6-core 3.4GHz for some applications (most) was the best and the sweet spot.
So you could upgrade to a pair of 3.2GHz 4-core (cheapest) rather than splurge on two 6-core 3.34GHz (more expensive and more cores).
First thing to do, put the system on a 256GB Samsung 840 SSD.
For photoshop and graphics, invest in some more SSD ($US300 for 500GB) and put those on a PCIe SSD controller ($300 Sonnet Tempo Pro) and put Aperture/Lightroom on one, and use the 2nd SSD for scratch.
RAM: 24-32GB would probably help all but the more casusalist of user.
    Tips and articles:
http://www.macperformanceguide.com head to the TOPICS main page and there are dozens of sections each a different area of upgrade and optimization for applications. Storage, memory, how to, use arrays, backup strategy.

When trying to log into face time I get the registering device does not have appropriate credentials after I sign in, I have OSX 10.8.4 on my Mac Pro. I can log into face time without a problem using my IPAD.>

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the issue is reolved. If there's no resolution after Step 3, post your results.
    Step 1
Sign out of iMessage in the Accounts tab of the preferences dialog, then sign back in.
    Step 2
Log out of your user account and log back in.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode and test, then reboot as usual and test again.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

  • Please help to upgrade my Mac Pro

I am a graphic designer. I start doing freelance job at home. I do a lot of photoshop work. I read on this and other forums to learn how to upgrade my Mac Pro. I am not a tech person at all. Please give me advise.
    1) I need to have a backup system. I am thinking of OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro. But how can I connect this to the airport extreme and my Mac Pro as a backup and storage drive for both computers? My Mac Pro has no airport card, and the extreme has only one USB port which was connect to the printer.
    2) I need more memory. I only has 2 GB now. They are 4x512 MB located at Riser A. I am thinking to buy the memory from OWC together with the external hard drive.
    3) After I do my back up on my Mac Pro. I will upgrade the OS to Snow Leopard. Should I also add another internal hard drive? I only have 250 GB on my Mac Pro
    Thank you.

Your Mac is 4 yrs old. Sure you want to invest in it? for someone beginning to do a lot of work in CS4 etc.

As requested, this is a new post from the "my mac will not wake up" thread.
I am having trouble putting my Mac to sleep. When I try to enter sleep mode, the fans make noise like it wants to restart, then the monitors go out and immediately back on. It wont stay in sleep mode.

Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep?

    Hi X,
I've been having the same problem of mac pro not going to sleep. I think its to do with some universal audio drivers installed with a recent hardware interface I've added.
    the terminal app in response to above line reads;

  • Mac Pro 2008 having boot issues...

    Hi,
My Mac Pro is having boot issues,It occasionally gets stuck when I turn it on and the fans go up a bit then I just get a grey screen, sometimes just shutting down and restarting works and sometimes not. I repaired the disc though it says has no issues and repaired permissions. It still does it. if I hold down the option key and boot and select my system drive then it boots fine. Once up and running everything seems fine it wakes from sleep no problem but after a shutdown it sometimes will not boot, it's almost 50 50 chance at this point that it does not boot. I can try booting off and older back up and see if it happens. I do have two video cards and 12 gigs of ram but not sure when this started to happen but it seems to be happening more often lately.
The Mac Pro warranty is over, taking it in for service is not an option at this point. I will install Snow Leopard on a new drive and see if it still happens as a test.

    88 * C is HOT
Hard drives are not much of an issue, even 4, though I don't like now that WD Black tend to run 40-42C.
I recommend everyone run SFC regardless. It should be a REQ'D background app!!!
That and Temperature Monitor  or iStatPro.... but on the whole only use the minimum and no duplication, not even for checking SMART health status. "less is more" or the olde "too many cooks" approach - your system runs better, even faster, and less trouble.
Kicking the fans up 400 rpm makes a significant change in temps. But of course if it is
    Hutch
    Pushed in corer
    Up against wall
    No air flow
    Direct sunlight

I have the same problem as mentioned in this short thread; http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11410973
Does anyone have any more information on this?
The problems started (I think) after I replaced my Nvidia GT120 with a ATI Radeon HD 5770.

I've got a Mac Pro and this is what I see when my Mac sleeps... BUT... I don't see anything when it tries to sleep and doesn't... or rather, when it is supposed to sleep...

  • Upgrade to mac pro now FCP won't open files

Howdy, i have upgraded from a 20" imac to an 8 core mac pro with 10 gigs ram-1.82 Terra HD and now I can't open the files I was working on with the imac. I can launch FCP but once I try to open a file it crashes the program.
All software is up to date (OSX 10.5.2, FCP 6.0.3).
    thanks, Gary

I have also called tech support and they suggested I reinstall the entire FCS1 & 2 software so I did. Everything seems to be running properly now.
I've learned that using migration assistant isn't such a good idea for FCS but it did save me a lot of time on my other programs so it was helpful.
I appreciate everyone's help and wanted to post what I've learned in case somebody else has had this problem.
    thank you, Gary

  • Upgrading from Mac Pro (2007) to Mac Pro (2009)

I'm attempting to get a few simple questions answered before upgrading my current Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel) to a Mac Pro (8-Core 2.26Ghz). I visited the local Apple store to see if I could get my questions answered and left having concerns since the Apple reps could not provide me with solid answers.
The gist of my question is can I pull my existing drives from my old Mac Pro and put them into the new Mac Pro without having to re-build the complete system. The answers that got were:
    - Sure no issues, everything will be fine
    - No you have to rebuild
    - and it will work but you will lose performance because of missing drivers
So I'm hoping that someone under this forum would be able to provide me with a definitive answer...
Here is my current Mac Pro configuration:
    - Snow Leopard 10.6.1
    - 4 x 1.5TB Internal Disks
    - Drive 1 OS
    - Drive 2 Data
    - Drive 3 & 4 Raid 0
    - 2 x Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT graphics cards
So with the configuration above. If I purchase a new Mac Pro 8-Core system will I be able to just pull the 4 x 1.5TB drives from the old and put them into the new and have the system come up and work fine? Or do I have to rebuild?
Last question, will the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT card work in the new Mac Pro?
    Thanks in advance!!!

As I said, just boot away. Obviously graphic cards have to stay behind (wouldn't really want those).
you don't even have to worry about what slot the drives go in (but never, ever be w/o backups, doubly so for RAID).
I will say this, personally I initialize and rebuild drives and arrays rather frequently, with a new OS, and sometimes knowing or discovering that there are changes to Disk Utility and arrays. And never be w/o Disk Warrior.
So in one sense, it might be a good opportunity if you have gone six months or didn't recreate your array with the arrival of 10.6 (though 10.5.0 was so iffy with disks it was best to sit it out for another six months, gotta watch those "dot zero" early releases).
One wish, that Apple would offer the GTX 285 as BTO for $250 at most, show they stand behind it in some way or 'endorse' it? They seem to EOL their graphic cards regularly, like every year.
Choosing RAM and cpu configuration is often hardest part.

This is my work computer (printing company) and my boss wants to upgrade it to the newest/best operating system. I run Adobe Creative Suite 4 and Quark 7
on it and I just want to know what is the best way of going about updating it without causing any conflicts with those programs. I know my choices are between
leopard and snow leopard but I have read that there are issues with updating to snow leopard and that leopard was safer but I don't see anywhere to buy a disk.
Also if you could point me in the direction of the actual steps I need to take once I have the disk for the update that would be great (I want to make sure that
the update does not cause any problems especially since it is not my personal computer)
    Thanks.

u need a ton moreof RAM for one thing
do a clean install on new hdd
