OSX 10.9.1 Slow!

For the past two weeks, my MacBookPro OSX 10.9.1 has been moving extremly slow. I clean out my cookies and delete temp files. I also use Clean My Mac on a regular basis.
It's very frustrating when I'm working from home.
Anyone else have this issue?
I still have AppleCare coverage, so wondering if I should take it in for a diagnostic?

Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Osx 10.6.8 slow after power outage

My 2007 intel imac lost power a while back and has been slow and somewhat erratic since that happened. My area suffered a power interuption that lasted a couple of minutes. When i turned the machine on the next day I used the disk utility to verify the disk and repaired permissions. the disk was fine but there were some permission errors which were repaired.
After doing all that I found Finder could no longer search and find files, I could still access a file normaly but I could not search for a specific file or a group of files 9 .dmg for example)
Firefox was very slow to fully load (30 seconds), one loaded the internet access was fine - 20 mbs or so. I downloaded the latest version of Firefox but it did no good.
I had loaded Enequeue a week before the failure occured and that stopped woking. When i would click on a song in my library it would just hang. A console error msg indicated the library had changed.
A remote printer that had worked fine before the event was no longer reachable. I can see the printer but I can't print to it and if I try to modify the printer settings in CUPS I have to reload the printer driver on the remote machine (a 27" 2011 Imac) because that computer shows the printer as being paused.
All of this seems like it's either a permissions problem or a corrupt system file. I've done the following ton try and fix it -
Used Disk utility to verify the disk
Use disk utility to repair disk permissions
    Done a safe mode start
    Reset all the plists
This older imac  is used mostly to access my music files on the new Imac, I then use the optical audio output to feed an outboard DAC attached to me stereo in the living room. The new imac is backed up daily but this one is not because it really doesn't have any data on it. It seems that i should be able to fix this without reinstalling everything. Both machines are running OSX 10.6.8.
Is there anything else i can try or should i just reformat the disk and reinstall OSX?
    thanks,
    Bob

Maybe a cache got corrupted.  Reboot in safe mode then reboot again.
Possibly run OnyX to do even more aggressive cleanups.

  • Osx 10.6.8 slow shutdown

Have been working on my daughter's Macbook Pro mid 2010 OSX 10.6.8 system prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Shutdown is very slow.  I get the spinning wheel for almost a minute before it shuts down.  What might be causing that?  I would like to resolve this before doing the upgrade to Mountain Lion.  thank you

Check your Airport icon and see if Airport is taking time every 5 seconds to look for networks even though it has the network you told it to connect to firmly in hand.
If so, this might be what is slowing things down. I think it might be for me.
    How to fix it??? Haven't a clue....yet.

  • OSX Lion is real Slow, was it developed for iPhone apps vs iMac

I'm concerned that the new OSX Lion is developed for the new market of iphones and Apps not the graphics power of a desktop.
All the graphics and tools have slowed down terribly. Even the windows move as you would want for your iphone but not for your computer.
This is terrible. Are there any preferences in OSX lion given to the user to remove some of these terrible programming mistakes.
    I have a 3.06 GHZ intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB MEmeory
    ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Mac OS XLion 10.7.2

OS X Lion is developed for Mac's, iOS is developed for iDevices.  Although I agree Lion is more iOS like than any other previous version of OS X.  What "terrible programming mistakes" are you looking to remove?

  • OSX lion is very slow after joining pdfs in preview.

I regualrly have to join several PDF files into one document. They way I am doing this at the moment is through preview i.e. simply dragging and dopping the files over one another in the thumbnail side bar. However, at some point the computer invariably freezes showing me the spinning wheel of death for perhaps 15mins. Some times I cannot revover and have to force a hard reboot. Other times, I can get it to soft reboot after waiting for ages. The funny thing is the resulting file is fine since I can access after it after performing the reboot.
Any ideas why this is and how I can avoid it since it wasts alot of time.
    Specs of my MacBook are:
Processor 2.8 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I have 600 GB of hard disc space free
    I am running OSX 10.7.3
The total size of the documents I want to join amounted to less than 4 Mb so I don't think I should be running out of memory.
    Any help appreciated
    Cheers

  • OSX 10.5 Very Slow

    Hey guys,
My OS has recently become very slow. I have only a couple of apps open and there is a lot of pending and non-responding going on (maybe due to recent large applications being installed)
I have cleared the majority of my data to an external HD and can only think that it is my full Application folder (58 apps) that is slowing down the system.
I want to copy all the apps I don't use over to my external and delete them from Mac HD.
Will I be able to drag these copies back over to my application folder as and when I need them and have them work ok?
    Here are my stats:
    MacBook Pro (2008)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB Ram
19.14 gig available on my Mac HD
    OSX 10.5.8
    5.79GB of applications installed
Many thank for reply in advance,
    Josh

    Hi..
19.14 gig available on my Mac HD
Not enough free space on the startup disk can cause the problems you are experiencing. 19GB's might be cutting it close.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

It's not really a good idea to move the actual applications to an external drive. You may have problems with software updates.

  • Mabook pro 13 in. OSX Runs way too slow. Constantly Buffers Too much. Several questions in summary.

I have a Macbook Pro 13 in. Running OSX 10.9.4
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have always sworn by my Mac. It's the best. However in the last 5 months or so everything I do on my Mac take so much time because it runs so slow. My Mac buffers upon every command. It buffers when I move the mouse, every time i click the mouse, when i open app, close app, when I right click on apps, and it buffers at least one time every sentence when typing on word. I have repaired petitions or utilities in the disk utility. Seemed to help a bit but if it even did it was short lived. I haven't noticed it so bad until I installed Mackeeper and ran a few clean ups.(could/could not be relevant). I want to know also how to clean the mail caches from the Mail app and also Microsoft outlook. I read cleaning them out could help performance but I don't want to accidentally erase all of my mail. I do use the mail app heavily. Or rather I use to before my mac ran slow. Please help me to get my mac up and running fast and smooth like it did before. Mac use to get a little hot when not doing it's best before. in the bavk on the bottom, under the screen. However it doesn't run hot anymore, or lately anyway. Last few days has ran pretty good but today its back to it's worst. Thanks a million and any and all help is welcome. Thanks again.

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.
If you still have problems after taking the above steps, see below.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • AE CS4 on OSX 10.5 Very Slow, Makes System Unresponsive

This is very frustrating, our company has been fighting this problem since we upgraded.  I work for a major broadcaster which uses AE for all our motion graphics work.  Since upgrading to CS4 we've experienced a team wide decrease in productivity.  AE CS4 renders slower than CS3 and in some cases will completely lock up the computer when rendering, making it impossible to do any sort of simple multitasking.  Even switching to the Finder and moving around windows is very slow.  Let alone try to use Safari or type into a TextEdit document.  We've tried everything, but details first.
We're running on last-gen 8-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro's.  Each has 10GB of ram and 1TB of HD space (mostly empty).  NVidia GeForce 8800 GT video card.  Runing AE 9.0.2.42)
We realize that 10GB is not enough ram to use all 8 processors at full speed.  So AE is set to use multiprocessing with a max of 3 cores with 2GB minimum with 2 GB in reserve for other applications.  All the work we do is with HD footage.  All footage is delivered in Apple Prores.  Any comp of medium or greater complexity will completely slow down the system.  When comparing CS3 rendering time to CS4, CS4 seems about 30-40% slower. When rendering CS4 will also completely lock up the system, switching windows is a complete pain.  We've tried turing on and off OpenGL in AE, but no change.  We're tried every combination of settings we can think of.   Rendering without multiprocessing is even slower and still locks up the system. Also in Activity Monitor is will often show only limited CPU useage (see attached screen).  You can see I'm running multiple aeselflink instances, but each one is no where near 100 and the system is still unresponsive!
Outside of rendering CS4 also is much more unresponsive when just working (not rendering).  Moving clips around in the composition window and navigating the timeline are sometimes a chore, with lots of 1-2 second delays before taking the action.  Or slow screen updates.
Any ideas what is happening here?  If is something with the change from 32-bit to 64-bit.  Will more ram fix it or is there something else going on?  This is becoming a very frustrating situations where we have to completely restart the computer and make sure no other apps are running before even trying to render our anything.  CS3 did not seem to have these problems, even with multiprocessing turned on at it's default settings.  We like many of the new features in CS4 and are practically required to use it because we get a lot of projects from vendors, but it's proving very slow to work in.

I don't know how complex your comps are, but our are usually pretty complex.  Simple comps with just text and 1-2 layers of video usually go pretty quick, but as soon as you ramp up complexity it slows way down.  I somehow don't think that our graphics card is the problem.  Most of the plugins we use do not see any benefit from OpenGL and we don't use that many 3D layers.  In general we haven't seen a big boost in AE performance with OpenGL on or off.  All our footage sits on a super fast Terrablock system with at least 300-400mb/s sequential read speeds.  Then again it could be that AE just runs poorly on Macs.
Adolfo - we have done some quite extensive benchmarks with all our machines here.  Configuring both 10GB and 16GB versions (we have not tried higher memory yet).  We tested the same comp in both CS3 and CS$ with various multiprocessor settings.  Our test file's complexity was indicative of the kind of projects we do.  Around 30 layers, a mix of TGA sequences with alpha, QuickTimes with alpha (animation) and ProRes footage.  Many layers with ReelSmart Motion Blur.  A Knoll Light Factory lens flare.  A mix of layers with various blurs and color correction and some transfer modes.
As you can see CS3 was much, much quicker at rendering the project.  In some cases almost twice as fast as CS4.  Also, strangely CS3 ran better limited to 4 processors in both the 10GB and 16GB configurations.

In general CS4 is about half the speed of an optimized CS3.  Going from 10GB to 16GB of memory gained us about 33% performance increase in the most optimized setting (4-6 processors at 2GB+ per processor).

  • My I Mac 10.5.8 osx is running so slow a snail could beat it

My I Mac is so slow it's driving me nuts, it loads anything from Excel, Internet absolutely anything I try to do.
The little spinning wheel comes on and I have to sit and wiggle my thumbs while I wait.

Maybe you can search for a method to boot single user mode (no graphical) and run a files system check or at least schedule one for your next reboot.  That is what I used to do on unix machines.  Finding your system install disk would be easier.  The only time I've ever had weirdness like this is 99% of the time related to file structures or permissions, bad programs usually show up as kernel panics or memory leaks causing thrashing.
While it is running slow, what does the activity monitor say for CPU load? Memory allocation?

  • OSX Lion, It is slow and really lumpy/jerky Can I revert back to Snow leopard?

    Where are Apple?
Had OSXLion for a week and it is nothing like as fast as the last OS, screen changes are really slow and jerky and the whole thing feels slower. Is there anything that I can do, or can I revert back to Snow Leopard?
This is a real shame never had this type of issue with Apple before.

This is a user to user forum.  You can only revert to Snow Leopard through your backup.  You might attempt piecemeal data recovery after backing up your Lion system, and copying your e-mail folders to IMAP if they weren't stored there before.  Spotlight frequently needs to finish updating in the menu in the upper right (it will only have a search field if it is done, and say it is indexing if it is not), or some plugins may need upgrading to be Lion compatible before you upgrade to Lion.  See my FAQs*:

  • OSX 10.4.9 slow user account

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a G5 dual Power PC with 4 user accounts on it. Recently, the fourth account has started to behave oddly, being slow to load, the dock has vanished, and the spinning beach ball is there all the time. The account is practically unusable. Grateful for any advice anyone can offer. Thank you. Brian

Since it's only happening with one account, I suggest deleting it, saving user data (which puts it into a disk image inside /Users/Deleted Users/), and recreating it using the same username/password combo. Log into the new account, mount the deleted account's disk image, and transfer the data to the new account. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2316.html and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106256 for details. Other information can be found using Finder->Help->Mac Help-> search for deleted user account.
Note that Apple's knowledge base system is currently down for system maintenance.
