OSX.8.2 won't allow me to update a pre-existing app (3rd party). What should I do?

For several years I have been using Audacity to edit my homemade mp3 files. I'm only using it to trim lengthy dead space before and after the track. There's a more recent version of Audacity which I downloaded today BUT my iMac's Mountain Lion won't permit me to launch it, as it didn't come from the App Store.
Q1: How can I get this app to launch? If not possible then (Q2) what freeware is available that serves the same function AND that my iMac will permit me to launch?

An easier way is to control-click (or right-click) on the application and choose Open. You'll be shown a dialog box that the application is unverified and asking if you want to open it. If you're certain that the app is what it purports to be, click "OK" and the app will open without issue from then on.

Don't know if any of you out there can help me but for some reason I am unable to install any unpdates for ANY of my third party software on my System Drive or any other drive for that matter. I continually get the little yellow triangle on the drive icon at the "destination select" stage of any update installation. Ive never had this problem before and it's only been happending over the last week and i haven't changed any OSX settings. Also im logged in as the Administrator and have the permissions set to read & write to all my drives.
Has anyone experienced this too?????

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.

An iPhone 4S can only be updated directly to iOS 8.1.2. You need to resolve the issue which prevents you from updating to it instead of attempting to install an intermediate version.

OS 10.9.2 will not allow me to update my old iPhoto app. I upgraded computer from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro and migrated my data onto the new machine. I had iPhoto '09 installed running on 10.5.8.Now on 10.9.2 and I get get a message that iPhoto was registered to another user and that I will need to purchase my own copy. Not sure why since I've always used the same account and its my only account. Isn't Mavericks supposed to come pre-loaded with the latest version of iPhoto?

I'm no Lion expert, but I believe you can boot from the Recovery partition by pressing the Command and R keys on startup, then reinstall.

That is not what I said.
Normal.dotm is a template, not a .doc file. It is the template that every new document is based upon, IF you changed any of the template settings (font size or other attributes) then you will be prompted to save the changes.
Did you? (or is this an old Windows Template)

I need QuickTime 7 on my mac to play some files for work, and already have QuickTime 10.2 on it, which my Mac won't allow me to uninstall. And when I try and install 7.7, I get an alert telling me that 'This version of QuickTime 7 can't be instralled on this disk because QuickTime X is already present. Please use Software Update to install the appropriate version of QuickTime for you Mac.'
Yet when I use Software Update, there is nothing to update.
Any ideas?
