OSX checking for new software forever

After upgrading to 10.5.5 my Dual 2gHz G5 is checking for new software forever
when I try to upgrade to that latest version of ARDT.
It goes about 70% and then sits there, with progressbar not making any progress beyon that.
No crash, I can cancel and quit...but not use Software update anymore...
Anybody with a fix?

have you tried downloading ard 3.2.2 yourself rather than to use software update to fetch updates for you? you can read about it here http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleremotedesktop322admin.html
you may also like to try the command line. i normally use the command line to perform software update instead of hitting apple > software update... because ive had less trouble running it via the command line. the command i use is +softwareupdate -ai+

Software Update wont check for new software.

No - I'm on 10.6.8 and it functions normally, though there are now very few actual updates. If there are no updates the progress bar should still complete in around 3 minutes and announce that there are no updates, so you've got something hanging somewhere. If it's still stuck hit command-option (alt)- escape, select Software Update and hit Force Quit. You could try it again (I should reboot first) in case it's a one-off glitch, but if it still sticks force quit it again.
The best suggestion I can offer is to apply the combo updater anyway in the hope that it may over-write whatever is causing the problem.

  • I am getting occasional Safari is out of date messages but checking for new software says "up to date".

weI am getting occasional Safari is out of date messages but checking for new software says "up to date".  Initially we subscribed to Support but did not realize that it has expired.  We have upgraded the OS once but have not received any notices of additional upgrades. So far I have not come across a way to update on my own.

I suspect this is the issue but wonder whether it is wise to upgrade my model:
    Model Identifier: iMac11,2

    Will it run it?

  • Software Update Stuck on "Checking for New Software..."

Not sure why, but today when I selected "Check for New Software" from the Apple Menu, Software Update started checking and does not proceed past that step. I've included a screenshot to show exactly where it's stuck.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

You may want to go to the Apple Downloads site and download the update manually, then check the .dmg with Disk Utilities’ Verify Disk, and then run the update package.
Sometimes there is an internet interruption that can corrupt the download, especially using a modem or DSL.

  • Apple Software Update is stuck in the "Checking for new software..." phase

I installed iTunes+Quicktime using iTunes64Setup.exe and so ASU got automatically installed as well.
When I manually start ASU, it immediately checks for new software and the progress bar stalls at around 10%. I have not seen ASU run by the task scheduler yet.
Bonus: The ASU logo has weird colours (http://imagebin.ca/view/XN2-zrN.html)
Is anybody also having the same problem?

    That's an odd one.
Have you tried a repair install of ASU?
Head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Software Update" and click "Repair".
Any help with the hang or the logo issue?

  • HT1338 My software updater freezes when "Checking for new software..." and then fans speed up.

Whenever I run software update, the blue bar freezes at about a fourth of the way across while "Checking for new software..." and then the fans sometimes speed up until I click Cancel. Sometimes it eventually completes "Checking for new software..." but when it does it is usually 45 minutes to an hour later. What gives?

If I reinstall the OS, will that jeopardize my data, docs or photo library?
No.  Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and first select Disk Utility to  repair disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot and try the App Store again.
If that fails boot again into the Recovery volume again and reinsatll the system.  Your data and photos will not be jeoparadized.

  • Software Update - Checking for new software bar stuck

    Hi,
When i check for software updates the loading bar gets stuck (please see image below), i left it for a couple of hours and its still the same.
The software updates was working before, what could be causing the issue?
    i got a macbook pro 13' early 2011.
    Thanks

I once had issues using the software update once after buying a used mini - previous owner must've changed the software update servers address. could this have happened to you?
you could fire up terminal and give this a try:
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
idk if this is gonna help, but its not gonna hurt either.

  • Software Update Not Working - Stuck at "Checking for New Software"

    Hey Everybody,
I have recently been experiencing problems with my Software Update. After I open it, it gets stuck at the screen and times-out after a while asking me to check my network to see if I'm connected to the Internet. My internet is working fine yet the Software Update is still not working. I have tried removing the Software Update pdlist and trying to change the cache.db yet nothing is working. I have run the verify disk and repair disk utility with no result. Anyone got any other ideas other then a clean install?

See if the following fixes the problem:
    Fix for Software Update
See Troubleshooting Automatic Software Update in Mac OS X.
    Delete the following files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxx.plist
    "xxx" is a number.
    /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/ (delete entire folder)

  • My macbook pro is hung on "checking for new software" and won't close or let me shut down. How do I shut it down safely? Thanks

I have tried shutting down from the apple...I have tried shutting down by trying to close the software update window (which won't let me close)...and have tried shutting down with just using the button. But the software blocks me from shutting down.

Hold down the option-command-esc keys and Force Quit Software update.

Thinking that it was a bug in the software I had the phone check for software updates and it is now stuck with the message "checking for new software for your HTC HTC6435LVW". Phone still works but the message keeps reappearing.
I have powered the phone off, removed the sim card, reinserted the sim card and powered the phone back up but that did not help.   What next?

Never fear, help is here Citadel_1974! I would be delighted to help out today. Have you attempted to process a full restore/reset on the device? If not, please complete and reconnect with us on the outcome. We look forward to hearing from you soon, thanks!

  • OSX 10.5.8 / Mail.app 3.6 - Mail.app No Longer Auto-Checks For New Mail

Since I upgraded to 10.5.8, Mail.app does not appear to be checking automatically for new mail. Regardless of how I set the preference (Every 1 Minute, Every 5 Minutes) it never checks for new mail, and I always have to click on "Get Mail".
I've verified this by opening the Activity WIndow and watching it for more than 5 minutes, with the preference set to 1 and 5 minutes between checks. I don't have time to test the longer intervals right now.
Mail.app is at version 3.6, modified yesterday morning at the same time that I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.8 update (from 10.5.7). I've used Spotlight to make sure that this is the only version of Mail.app on the drive.

Never mind...for the account in question, the "include this account when checking automatically" option was unchecked. Not sure how that happened...

  • OSX 10.10 Mail, check for new mail at system startup?

When I start the mail app, it will check for new messages.  But can the mail app be set to automatically check for new mail at system startup?  I typically do not "re open apps when logging back in".
    THANKS

Leave Mail running and set it to check every minute. AFAIK, there's no way to check otherwise.

  • OSX Mail not checking for new mail on wake from Sleep.

Since upgrading to 10.6.4, my iMac no longer checks for new mail when waking from sleep. I have to manually Get Mail, and then it keeps up to date as normal. RSS feeds get updated fine. I am using MobileMe mail.
Any ideas? I have restarted Mail and rebooted the computer. Nothing obvious in the logs.

I think you will find this is a product of the use of the IDLE command. When the computer is asleep, but you have not quit Mail and logged off, the MobileMe server try to contact the Mail app to "push" emails. Not finding any response from Mail, the account is logged off. Quitting Mail and relaunching should restore -- does it?
You can test this by deselecting to use IDLE in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced.
Most people, who leave Mail running, would only allow the display to sleep and not the computer.

  • Mail constantly checks for new mail; downloads same emails repeatedly HELP!

For the last three days (since 19th), Mail has been downloading the same emails over and over again. I first noticed a problem when about 20 spam emails that usually route to my Junk folder appeared in my Inbox. I thought I had just moved it incorrectly and deleted them, then they appeared again later.
The mail jogger cycle (next to Inbox) keeps turning and turning like it can't stop checking for new mail. How do I get it to stop?? The emails are multiplying like gremlins in my Inbox and driving me nuts!
Also, it only downloads new emails when I first open the app. I have to force-quit out of Mail, then reopen, and I will get a couple of new emails, and then ALL THE EMAILS FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS AGAIN.
Mail was working fine for me until three days ago. The only thing I've changed recently is a Software Update on the 15th for QuickTime and iTunes.
Please help! I tried to Repair Permissions and it didn't do anything. I also tried removing all messages from the server and that did nothing either.

UPDATE: I think I got it to stop checking mail. I have Yahoo mail and I checked my email through online Yahoo. I was able to delete a bunch of emails and it suddenly stopped checking for email in the Mail app.
HOWEVER, it will NOT remove some of my junk emails. I was able to delete over 100+ of them. But one specific message (which I now have 8 copies of) will not go away. It is one of those 'Delivery Status Notification' emails. Is this a virus??
I've tried Erasing Deleted Messages and Erasing Junk Mail. Neither helps. These emails won't go away.
Help please! I would be very grateful.
