OSX freaking out...keyboard accessing menus..apple menu duplicating options
This may be in the wrong forum, but this is really becoming an issue. What happens is from time to time one of our computer all of a sudden starts freaking out.
What happens is: Keyboard will no longer type. Instead it accesses file commands. For example, If I hit "i" it will get info. You can't type in any dialogue box or anything. All keys will try to access some shortcuts. It's not the keyboard that is the problem. I've tried multiple keyboards.
The apple menu will duplicate options. Like restart will show up twice etc..
Normally a restart would fix this problem, but it seems to be reoccuring more frequently, and the last time, I had to restart 4 times, repair disk permissions, and then zap the Pram twice before it would work again.
Any insight would be great.
Thanks
Sounds like something going on in your SystemPreferences>UniversalAccess settings.
Specifically, the 'duplicated' options in the Apple menu is normally associated with VoiceOver.

Safari Locks Up - Locks Up Access To Apple Menu
I'm having a recurring problem with Safari on two iMacs on an AirPort Extreme network. I have an iMac 1.8ghz G5 running OSX 10.4.2 with iMB RAM and running Safari 2.0.1. All patches are up to date. I also have an iMac 1ghz G4 with the same software levels. The problem happens on both computers, though more frequently on the G5.
Basically, what happens is during a Safari session, the browser will freeze. I can close the window but not quit Safari, but have no access to any other programs, and can't stop Safari using force quit from the Apple menu, as I can't access it.
This problem first started about 3-4 days ago (no problems ever before that). The G5 started first, then the G4, and lock-ups happen 5-6 times a day now.
I had a chat session with an Apple tech support person 2 days ago. He told me to do the following:
- do a PRAM reset
- do an NVRAM reset
- delete the following files: com.apple.Safari.plist com.apple.Syndication.plist com.apple.SyndicationAgent.plist com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
- run repair disk and repair preferences
Did all that, and the problem is still happening.
One thing I have found: If I turn the Airport Extreme off (hard shut down or from the menu bar), killing the internet connection, Safari gives the "Can't find the internet" error page and wakes up out of its hibernation.
This problem is exasperating. Any help would be appreciated.James,
I've had an identical experience with two different iBooks, also running the latest updates. I use a generic 802.11b WiFi router asa WAP, hooked up to a modem, but the same solution you mentioned applies. When the Safari lockup occurs If I restart the router everything responds and returns to normal. As I had discussed in a different post, I've found the problem seems to occur more often on java intensive web sites. For several days I could repeat the problem every time I tried the foxnews.com web site. I noticed it the night the Jet Blue aircraft had the damaged front gear, and it continued until yesterday. The past two days, just as strangely the site now works and video etc streams perfectly. I'm wondering if Safari has a problem dealing with a java script error or something similar on the offending web pages, causing it to get stuck in a loop. thats my current best theory anyway.
There are a number of identical complaints to yours on these and other forums, unfortunately I've yet to find anyone actually identify a positive solution.
Good luck -

Why can't I click on more info in apple menu
I can't click on more info I need that to download some software.
Can somebody help me with this?AFAICT, there's no more info option under the Apple menu bar option. Add more details.
iMac refurb (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), SL & ML, G4 450 MP w/Leopard, 9.2.2 -
Can't access the "Apple" icon in upper main menu to shutdown my MacBook Pro running 10.6.8! Also can't open a new finder window and main menus such as File and Edit are sluggish to open or don't open at all. Doesn't happen each time I attempt to shutdowCan't
There are some keyboard commands (shortcuts) you can use instead of having to go to the Apple menu -
Control-Eject This brings up the Restart-Sleep-Cancel-Shutdown window.
Command-Option-Eject This puts the machine to sleep.
Command-Control-Eject This closes all apps and restarts the machine.
Command-Option-Control-Eject This closes all apps and shuts the machine down. -
menu bar of osx 10.6.7 becomes unresponsive, no way to access any pull down menu not even the apple menu, as long as FF4 is active. Hiding it and recalling FF to the front doesn't cure the problem. FF has to be terminated with cmd+Q or from the Dock. FF remains itself responsive, tabs can still be shifted and sites called.
First thing I'd do is update the OS to 10.6.8. There are bugs in 10.6.6 and 10.6.7, that's why Apple releases updates.

Keyboard short cut to activate the Apple menu
I recently had a situation when my bluetooth wireless mouse lost it pairing. Fortunately I have a Magic Track pad that was working. I would like to know the keyboard shortcut to activate the Apple menu so if this problem arises again I can, restart, or as I did in this case go to system preferences->bluetooth and delete the mouse and add it back. I have the article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343?viewlocale=en_US, with all the keyboard shortcuts but cannot find one to activate the Apple menu.
Don't know of one that opens the but you can get there by:
Hit OPT-F2, System Preferences will open to Displays but the cursor will be in the search box. Type bluetooth and hit enter and you'll be in the PreferencePane for Bluetooth.
Should accomplish the same thing.
Regards
Edit: I finally found it. CNTL-FN-F1 to turn on full keyboard access then CNTL-FN-F2 will highlight , then down arrow.

Wireless keyboard initially works with macbook pro, but then freaks out!
i just started using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse with my 2-year old macbook pro, and while it all initially pairs up and works fine, after about 10 minutes weird things start happening.....like the tilda button seems to suddenly get stuck and repeats itself until i push it down, or my browser windows starts jumping to fill the screen. it still keeps working, but the freaking out on my screen gets worse.
i first unpaired first the keyboard and then the mouse to see which was causing the problem, and it seems to be the keyboard that's the culprit. the battery level seems to be fine, and as i said it seems to be paired correctly when i double check it under bluetooth in sys pref. also checked the keyboard viewer in sys pref and that seems to be working ok. i've done some searching on apple support and in discussions but can't find any similar situation. (also couldn't find a discussions category for keyboard, or would have posted this there)
i would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts/suggestions on this!I am having a similar problem with the wireless keyboard. Initially it will work, but then I'll come home and my computer speakers will be beeping because the wireless keyboard is trying to type something from across the room. Additionally, when I try to use my regular onboard keyboard when this happens, its impossible because the wireless keyboard is constantly typing something. My only way around this is to turn off wireless keyboard and only turn it on when I need it. Please post back with your results. Any ideas of how I can fix this?

Is there a way to change the keyboard shortcut for opening the apple menu? Currently I have to press the CTRL-FN-F2 keys then use the down arrow key to view the list. I'd like to easily use 2 keys with 1 hand instead of the current 3.
ThanksWhile I'm not exactly sure how you would get that in one shortcut, I can say this. If you are looking for shortcuts you need, nay MUST, check out Quicksilver. I got seriously addicted to this program, such that it's hard for me to use a computer with out it.

There is some great documentation, but lifehacker.com is a bit of a champion for Quicksilver and they have tons of tips and videos showing how it works and how it will change your workflow/life for the better.

Keyboard freaks out by Wacom tablet
I have, since six months, a Wacom tablet (Intous 3 with USB-connection) connected to my iMac. Everything has worked fine until now: When the tablet is connected, my keyboard freaks out and generates only strange signs (I don't know the name of the keyboard layout, but it includes a lot of mathematical symbols, an apple-logo, etc.). If I disconnect the tablet and restarts - the keyboard is as it should be again.
I have updated the wacom-driver. This didn't help.
Any ideas?enmanneleu wrote:

One more thing I didn't think of before: what kind of keyboard do you have?
An apple keyboard. The new thin one with wire.
I have now tried the tablet on another computer (PC) and it worked but the LED on it flickered. Maybe because it did not get power enough? But I don't understand how this affects the keyboard?
Because the tablet and keyboard are both USB devices, there are certain things they share in common. Both are electrical devices connected to the same bus on the computer. And there would be a certain amount of commonality between their data paths once the electrical signals reach the computer. When you push a key on your keyboard, it sends an electrical signal to the computer that Mac OS X interprets as a key press. The tablet also sends electrical information to the computer, it's just interpreted differently by the computer.
This is a vastly oversimplified explanation, but suppose the keyboard sends its signals to the computer and identifies itself as USB device 1 and the tablet identifies itself as USB device 2. But the actual content of the signals each sends is pretty much the same, just data that represents a series of numbers. It's really important, then, for OS X to be able to distinguish between them, because the signal from the keyboard for pressing the letter "a" might be the same as the signal from the tablet when you click at a pixel 20 in from the left and 67 in from the top, with a pressure of 50%.
So, how would OS X be confused between the keyboard and tablet? It could happen for an electrical reason. For example, only part of the data from the tablet or keyboard gets to the computer, but enough that OS X can at least try to interpret it. Or, once the data gets from the tablet or keyboard, the software that listens to the USB devices tells OS X the wrong thing about the information it received. Each USB device has an associated driver that interprets the signals from that device and tells OS X what to do. There could be a bug in a driver that would take the signal from Device 2 (the tablet) and assume it came from Device 1 (keyboard), and then send OS X the wrong information. But I think it's less likely to be a keyboard driver bug if you use the default Apple driver, which you'd use with one of their keyboards.
The LED on the tablet flickering makes it sound like a problem in the tablet itself or with its USB cable, and not a problem with the software on your Mac. If you know someone else with a tablet who could let you borrow theirs for a short time, that would also be helpful. If their tablet works, and doesn't interfere with the keyboard, then you know it's more likely to be the tablet itself and not your computer.
One other thing is to move the keyboard and tablet to different USB ports on your iMac. I think you have four to choose from, right? Perhaps there's something wrong with one of the ports on the computer, a bent pin or maybe a piece of dust that's causing a connection not to be made.

Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
I wasted about 1.5 hours with Apple on this issue. It all started happening after I updated to the latest version of iTunes. I haven't been able to sync my iPhone 4 in 1 month and am freaking out about possibly losing my pictures, video, text messages and music.
Windows XP user.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1If might be helpful if you actually told us what the problem is.

Mac OS X 10.5: Can't Access Apple Menu or Dock
While I composing a message in Mail last night, I started having problems with data input. The cursor would would freeze or disappear from the window. I was unable to use the mouse to position the cursor in the window.
I attempted to click on the Apple menu to invoke "Force quit..." and discovered that I couldn't access anything in the menu bar nor would the Dock open when I moved the cursor to the left side of the screen.
I could use Ctrl-arrow to move between "Spaces". If I had an open application in a "Space", I could enter data but not access anything in the Apple menu bar. Command-Q would terminate each application.
I was able to send the message that I was composing using the Shift-Command-D sequence. I then exited from Mail using the Command-Q key sequence.
At this point the system was dead other than to use Ctrl-arrow to move between spaces. I had to hold the power button to restart the system.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be? How do I report this to Apple software support? While I composing a message in Mail last night, I started having problems with data input. I wrote my apple ID questions in 5th grade, and am in 9th now, so I can notremember them. my emergency email with the info was deleted, so I can not change them, and for some reason, my birht date will not go through, so I must have put the wrong thing in 5th grade, and I am freaking out! What do I do?
You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

My Power MAC G5 has a peculiar problem. The monitor fails to report until the machine is started and shut down 5 or 6 times. Once it has booted it can be restarted without incident from the Apple menu. I have swapped out all of the hardware. Monitor, Memmory,Video Card and reset the PRAM. After resetting the PRAM it booted on the first attempt and I thought it was solved. But the next day it was back to starting and stopping until the Monitor came on. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks
It could be a bad PRAM battery corrupting your PRAM. Typically when I have monitor issues on startup it is a bad PRAM battery.

If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. A new battery provides 3.67 Volts DC. A bad battery provides under 3.2 Volts DC. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
>I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.

Alternatively, test the battery while it is still in the computer.
If the battery is more than 5 years old, especially if you totally disconnect the computer from the power regularly, or have left it unplugged for several months at one time, it is likely the battery is dead.
Sometimes you have to do a more intensive reset of hardware management:
