OSX freezes while external HDD starts up.

I have a WD My Book Studio connected to my Mac via firewire 800.
Over time the HDD goes into a sleep mode.
When using OSX, the HDD randomly starts up.
I have had it start up when simply using the brush tool in Photoshop to surfing the net.
For the duration of the boot OSX freezes up, it can take anything from 5-15 seconds.
It isn't to much of a problem, however if there is a way to prevent this from happening. It would be good to know.

I have disabled the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.
It however did not affect the external HDD.
As for un-mounting the drive and remounting it. I know that works, however it is haste. I'm not sure if there is a solution for this. Do Seagate HDDs have the same problem ?
Also out of interest, what HHDs do LaCie use, do they make their own drives?

  • Lion osx freezes my mac on start up.

Have gotten a very frustrated with Lion. Having been forced to upgrade to lion because of the iCloud switch over, then finding out that Final draft 7 (the format I do most of my work in) will not work on Lion so I had to purchase and install FinalDraft 8, my mac now freezes when I try t turn my computer on.
    I can't work. what do I do?

Hold Shift Key upon boot, that should temporarily disable any  kext files in OS X, perform some repairs etc.
Perhaps you might want to reinstall just/only Lion again to get a cleaner copy

  • Windows On Mac: BootCamp Freezes While Partitioning HDD

    Hi everyone,
I wanted to partition my 3tb hard drive in the second bay to have windows on it. I obviously did this using boot camp. I followed the steps as I had done it before and ended up partitioning 101gb for Windows. The progress bar went very quickly until about 1/3 of the way and just stopped. The animation is still there, but the bar itself it not moving at all. It has been almost 3 hours. So i just quit from bootcamp and repaired the hard drive. Then i got back my hard drive space.
Please help me to fix this problem. How can i sort this out?

  • External HDD not found

My external won't show up all of a sudden. It was working fine, updated to 10.6.8 latest verion to prepare for Lion. Then when I want to copy some files from external HDD like I always do, it isn't there anymore. Won't show up in Finder nor Disk utility.
The external HDD starts up like normally, sound is ok. But just doesn't show up. I connected the HDD to windows 7, it installed the driver automatically but doesn't show the drive.
What to do? Who can help me?

I suspect the drive or the electronics in the external enclosure is bad.
More then likely it isn't the drive itself. More then likely it is the external enclosure electronic

  • Finder freezes when plugging external hdd

I have a "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB3.0" external HDD and everytime I plug it into my mac and open Finder, it takes hours to show the files and most of times my mac freezes while trying to do so.
I have never had this problem before installing Mavericks.
Could anyone help me on that?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My macbook freezes whenever I connect external HDD or USB pen.

My macbook freezes everytime I plug my USB pen or my external HDD, however if I reboot it and keep the USB pen/ext HD plugged it will work just fine.
Can you guys help me because it's really frustrating having to turn the computer off everytime I need to copy sth to my USB pen/Ext HDD.
    Many thanks.

    Hi fol10,
If you are having unusual USB behavior, you may want to start by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM, as outlined in the following articles
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple-support
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
You may also want to see if this behavior happens with every USB port on the Mac, or just a specific one.

  • Can I use my external hdd with OSX server

Hi i am thinking about using OSX server, but I dont have very much space on the computer I would b running it of of so I would store everything on my 4TB Wd external HDD. Is this posible, and how would I set it up to do that? Also, my external also has some backups from other computers on it and will I loose any of that? I would probably partition it so that 1TB of it has all the servers files and everything.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yep you can use any connected drive for server storage, its under the settings tab called Service Data
No you wouldn't lose anything on the drive (assuming its Mac formatted) but clean partition would be a good idea

  • Satellite L670-1JP external HDD not always recognized on start-up

I bought a Samsung G3 external HD. The first time i plugged it in, it was directly recognized by my Toshiba Satellite L670-1JP and worked with no problems.
But later, almost everytime I start up my computer, he does not find the external HD. I then have to unplug en replug the USB connection several times to make it work.
This is rather time consuming, so how can I solve this problem ?

    Hi
Do other USB devices work properly in connection with the Satellite L notebook?
Did you test this external HDD with other computers/notebooks?
I think you should do this because it could be a external HDD malfunction.

  • USB External HDD not recognised in OSX 10.5.4

    Hi,
I am attempting to use an ISOGEAR250 2.5" IDE external HDD on my iMac.
This deviceis advertised as 'compatible with OS/X', which is in fact only true up until version 10.4.9.
The device is not detected on any OS/X version with the IOUSBMassStorrageClass.kext or IOUSBfamily.kext kernel extensions of any version of OS/X past 10.4.9.
The only way to get this device to detect on Leopard is to revert the specific kernel extensions to earlier versions, and use the USB Prober utility. This is quite a dangerous exercise, and can lead to operating system instability.
I have tried the device on numerous Apple computers, and it only works on the ones with OS/X 10.4.9 or earlier installed. I have also experimented with many different file system formats. This device works fine on Windows machines, including Windows in Bootcamp, and Windows using VMWare or Parallels.
For your information, the device does turn up in the System Profiler with the following info, but will refuse to mount with kernel extensions past version 10.4.9:
    USB4500 FW1.04:
    Version: 0.001
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: DATAST0R Technology Corp
    Product ID: 0x4500
Serial Number: 1966XXXXXXXXXXXX (I added in the X's)
    Vendor ID: 0xed06
If I plug the HDD in while my iMac is sleeping, it will wake up the iMac.
I have tried the device on both the iMac's built-in USB ports, as well as with a powered USB hub.
Numerous other users have had similar of the same problem
(see: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7835455), and yet Apple has not yet rectified the problem, which is clearly arising from the update to the operating system, and not the device itself.
Does anyone have a fix for this problem, aside from reverting the kernel extensions and using the USB prober?
    Thanks for your help,
    Cal

From searching the web, I am tempted to say the Iso Gear is quite an exotic device.
It's up to Astone them to deliver a firmware upgrade for their device to work with Mac OS X 10.5, as Apple probably follows USB 2.0 standards when accepting (or not) an external hard drive.
diskutil became more picky in 10.5 (been bitten myself) but still, I am not sure whether this is due to Apples development teams faults or due to to Astone following standards.
There has been an issue in 2006 with LaCie drives on OS X 10.4 which were resolved by their firmware upgrade.
I know this is of no help to you, but consider not just talking on Apple forums about this but also on Astone help channels.

does anyone know a work around for this in leopard as it's going to take a whole day to re-install tiger and all my apps...

Long time ago I have upgraded even older Satellite M70 with SATA HDD (270 GB if Im remembering well) and everything was fine.
In my opinion upgrade with normal SATA HDD should not be problem. It must not be SATA II because it will not work faster.
I cannot say for sure but there must be some compatibility problem.
Lets see if anyone else had more luck with HDD upgrade on Satellite A100.
Have you checked this forum with advanced search option? Maybe you can find some older thread about HDD upgrade on A100.

  • Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive?

Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive? For instance, hypothetically, could I have a Mac Mini Server with 2TB of internal storage and 2 external 4TB Thunderbolt HDD's, and make the OS see them all as one large 10TB drive?

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. Here is a tutorial on how to do this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57550128-263/how-to-make-a-custom-corestora ge-drive-in-os-x/

  • How do I start up from an external HDD?

My G4 crashed last night, so I need to start up from my external HDD which has the OS installed on it too, to repair my normal Internal start up drive.
I've forgotten how though and I need some important files within the next half hour.
If anyone knows how, please let me know ASAP.
    Thanks.

    Hi Merc
First of all, let me caution you that drive/data recovery and urgent access to your files are pretty much mutually exclusive. If your data can be recovered, you'll need to exercise patience.
Second, do you have a backup of your valuable data? If so, how old is it, and how much effort would it be to bring it up to current status?
If you don't have a backup, let me recommend that you set one up as soon as this process is done.
So, first, run Disk Utility either from the secondary drive (an OS X volume, I assume?) or from your install CDs. (Running it from the drive will be a bit faster.) If Disk Utility is able to see your primary volume, run Repair Disk on it and see if that corrects the issue.
If that doesn't work, my next recommendation would be to purchase and run DiskWarrior. You can get a download as soon as you purchase it, and run it from your secondary drive. If your drive issue is a corrupted directory (very common), DiskWarrior will attempt to repair it. This program is a great investment, and I'd recommend it for almost any Mac user.
If your drive issue is physical (ie, it's dead, and no software can recover it), there's not much you can do at home, but a specialised data recovery service may be able to help you.
    Good luck!
    Matt

This is sometimes caused by Bad Blocks on the Hard Drive.
If 10.7, hold down Command-R at startup, and choose Disk Utility.
If 10.6 or earlier, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, answer only the "what language" question and wait for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your Hard drive by Make & Model and check the SMART Status (lower right of the right window). Choose "Repair Disk" . This ONLY examines and repairs the Directory area of the drive, but may improve things a bit. If errors cannot be repaired, you may need a stronger tool, or a new drive.
