OSX goes to sleep while VLC still playing

Hi,
for some reason OSX seems to enter sleep mode even though VLC is still playing music. SO I keep finding myself haveing to get my computer out of sleep mode and restart playback. Very annoying... I might not have noticed it before, but I can't remember it doing this until today...
Is there any way to tell OSX not to enter sleep mode while VLC is playing?

Going to sleep means the screen is off so music should not stop when the screen turns off.
Any change after powering your iPhone off and on and/or a reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release?

  • IPod screen goes to sleep while playing

    Hello,
I have what I believe is either the 6th or 7th generation iPod 120gig. I just picked it up used and it is in good condition.
The problem I have is, while I have it playing on my Bose system, the songs play, but I can't see what song is actually playing like my 1st generation iPod does. This one, the screen goes to sleep while the songs play. is there a fix for this possibly? I have many songs and it's always nice to just look over and see what is playing.
    Thank you,
    JG

Your problem is that your iPod is not sensing that your headset is inserted. There is a pin inside the headphone port on the Nano that senses if it is inserted fully. If it does not sense anything, it will pause playback to save battery power when the screen dims. Here are the solutions:
Insert it fully. This will fix it for most of you. Press that thing in there all the way. You should feel and hear a full click when it is fully seated. If you can see ANY silver of the headset jack, it is not fully inserted.
Debris inside the headset port. If you are totally unable to push the headset jack all the way, the most likely problem is that you have crud inside your headphone jack. Try blowing it out or slapping it against your palm with the headset port facing your palm to try and get the stuff out. If you look into he jack with a light, you should be able to see to the bottom. The entire inside of the headset port is white, so if it looks dark at the bottom, that is the crud that is keeping your nano from working.
Headset jack or plug issue. If you cannot solve the problem with 1 or 2, then there is likely something physically wrong with either the headset jack on your headphones or the headset port on the nano.
If none of the above works, you need to take it to the Apple store or wherever you purchased it. I think they are still under warranty.

  • My imac g5 goes to sleep while in use. typically when im playing games

For the last several months, my mac has been going to sleep during use. Typically when im playing games, like second life, or in any type of programs, but it has also been going to sleep while im watching videos on youtube or hulu. It's getting worse and worse, and once it goes to sleep the first time, it doesnt stay on long afterwards. When browsing the internet, its fine. I've recently backed up 40,000 images that I had on my computer, and deleted for more memory space. but it didnt stop it from going into sleep mode, it just doesnt go as quickly as it was before. I was told that it was a memory problem, but since i deleted all of the images off of my computer, the problem still persists. I even turned sleep mode to "never". Here are some of my computer stats:
    Memory: 512 MB
    Processor: 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5
    Space Free: 104.18 GB
    Space utilized: 128.58 GB
My monitor stays warm, never gets hot, but sometimes i can hear the fan blowing loudly when it goes into sleep mode
If anyone could help, i would greatly appreciate it =)

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

my macbook is going to sleep while I'm working or viewing something. I will sometimes have to open and close it several times to get it to "wake up" again. Also, no sound comes out of my Macbook. I only hear with earbuds or headphones. Any suggestions?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "Previous Shutdown" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Computer goes to sleep while I'm working

    Hi everyone,
I was hoping someone can pinpoint my problem and help me fix it.
My computer goes to sleep while I'm working on it.
Just by itself. Sometimes right in a row.
Does anyone know any tips that I can use.
I copied the contents from Console.app
and here is what I found:
sleep demand recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:14:57 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:49:24 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: sleeptime recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:14:57 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:49:24 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: waketime is: Thu Mar 1 08:49:24 2007\n\n
    Mar 1 08:51:46 My-G5 EÊæÔ[137]: sleep demand recorded: Thu Mar 1 08:51:46 2007\n\n
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
    Cheers!

  • Computer sleeps while iTunes is playing

Just like the title says, my Mac goes to sleep even when iTunes is playing.  This is pretty ludicrous.  Is there anyway to prevent this other than changing my power savings settings to never let my Mac go to sleep?  I don't want to do that, I want my computer to go to sleep when I am not using it.
This sure seems like a bug.  I am running the newest version of iTunes as well as Lion.  Thanks for all your help.
My current energy saver settings are:
    Computer Sleep:  15 min
    Display Sleep:  15 min
Put hard disks to sleep when possible - yes
wake for network access - yes
allow power button to put the computer to sleep - yes
start up automatically after a power failure - no
restart automaticall if the computer freezes - no
Again, I would rather not have to change these settings in order to keep iTunes playing.  Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Jake

Jake, did you find any solution? I'm having exactly the same problem, though I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.2. I have basically all the same settings as you have. In fact I did try unchecking the "put hard disk to sleep whenever possible" for a while, but didn't help. Still goes to sleep after about 1 hour of otherwise inactivity (i.e only itunes playing).  This has got to be a bug, and seems to be affecting a lot of people.  I'll keep an eye on this topic.
    Thanks.

  • Computer keeps going to sleep while using compressor

I have been using compressor for years to compress my video files. I edit the videos during the day and I let Compressor run all night long. Last night when I tried to run compressor over night something happened and I am hoping someone out there can help me out. What happened is that after a few minutes (probably 30 or less) my computer went to sleep. I have the computer settings set to never sleep, and it never does. Except now I find that when I run compressor, for some reason it goes to sleep. I can wake it up using the mouse, but that is not productive for overnight batch jobs. I even tried installing "jiggler" a program designed to move your mouse for you, but that didnt work. The computer still falls asleep. Does anyone know what is going on or how I might fix this problem?
I am using final cut Pro 5.0.4 and Compressor 2.0.1
    I have a G5 (dual 2.7 Ghz Power PC G5) with 2GB DDR SDRAM
    I am running OSX 10.4.11
    I have 10 500GB firewire drives
Thank you in advance for any solution options you may come up with.

I got this issue resolved. It turns out that the computer was overheating while using the processor intense compressor program. All I had to do was to open it up and clean the dust out and off of the heat sinks. Who knew that such a simple solution would stump so many people.

  • MacBook Pro Retina goes to Sleep while using it

Hi, I have a problem with my MacBook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013. Since this morning, the computer goes to sleep for no reason, while using it and without a specific pattern. Sometimes when i try to wake it up, the monitor turns on but the display LEDs are still off. Other times it just freezes in sleep and I have to hard restart the Mac.
    What should I do? Thanks!

Go step by step and test.

  • IMac going to sleep while I'm working on it

I will be working on my Imac, final Cut or Imovie or just simply surfing the internet and the screen will go blank. I move the mouse or a key and the computer comes back the way it was why is it going to sleep on its own?

You are describing the screen going dark while you are working. And you say that moving the mouse brings it back. That sounds like display sleep. Just moving the mouse wouldn't wake up the computer if it had entered sleep. You would need to click it or press a key.
    >I have the engery Saver set to 15 min.
Which one is set to 15 min? There are two "sleep" functions, computer sleep and display sleep. Fifteen minutes is much too short for computer sleep and much too long for display sleep.

  • Mac Book Pro 17" going to sleep while being used

    Hi there,
I've had this MBP since November 2006.
Not had any problems at all - until, the past few weeks, during regular use, the MBP just goes to sleep. The screen goes dark, and after a few seconds the front LED starts fading out, as it does when it goes to sleep. I press any key and it comes back on, as if nothing had happened.
I can't figure out what is causing this. When I finish using the MBP I just close the cover to put it to sleep. It just happened twice tonight, in the past hour, and power was connected - it wasn't on battery power.
I've performed a few searches and all the results are related to "not going to sleep".
Mine has no problem doing that, but it goes to sleep when it shouldn't.
Software Update runs automatically and I routinely still run it manually, so everything is up to date.
    Any ideas? Suggestions? Thoughts?
I plan to take it into a Genius Bar at some point, but I'm a bit skeptical in what I'll accomplish doing that if I cannot reproduce it.
    Thanks.

Thank you for your reply Jake.
    1) The battery is being charged.
I have made sure of that. I do see the amber light and using iStat Pro widget it shows it being charged. Currently at 88% health and 166 cycles.
    2) I have it set to put the computer to sleep if it is inactive for 1hr 15mins - on the power adapter - and around 20 minutes when on battery.
    3) My fingers can't reach that key combination.
    Thanks again for your help.
If all else fails, I'll try the SMC reset to see.
The annoying thing is it doesn't happen all the time - or consistently whatsoever.

  • About 9 minutes in, the picture "fades" like it going to sleep.  It keeps playing but too dark to watch.  If I stop and hit play again, it fixes it but goes dark about every 4 min

I have difficulty watching an iTunes purchased movie - I believe just HD movies as this issue doesn't seem to happen anywhere else within my Apple TV products.   For example, I purchased a movie last night.   At about 9 minutes in the picture "faded" - so dark I couldn't see it.   The audio is fine and the movie is playing but a dark, dark picture.   It's like it is going to sleep.   I can reset by stopping the movie and hitting play again BUT about every 4-9 minutes, the fading issue happens.   Not a fun way to watch a movie!
The support here doesn't seem to have an answer.   Anyone?

No, sounds like when you dropped it an cracked the screen it may have also damaged the logic board or the repair person damaged a cable.

  • MBPo goes to Sleep while scrolling and power connected

I have previously reported on the other threads about the sudden Sleep while on battery, miserable battery run-time and weird reporting of battery health after Snow Leopard upgrade.
    Something new happened:
I was scrolling a webpage when the MBP went to Sleep although the battery was completely charged and the AC-power still connected (green light).
And no I haven't fallen a sleep for 10 minutes (which is the go-to-sleep-time) without doing anything.

    Re-check your Energy Saver settings.
    Try this:
Change the energy saving options, to put the display to sleep and the computer to sleep at the same time.
Enable (check mark) put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
    Lock the padlock.
    Optional: Repair permissions &/or restart.
