OSX hangs when booting + monitor woes

Firstly, the internal monitor on my MacBook Pro refused to turn on when the computer booted - chime sounded on boot and the computer responded to keyboard input. I managed to fix the monitor by using my iMac as an external display, then shutting down and yanking out the video cable - now the internal monitor works! I'm glad its working, but does anyone have any insight into what went wrong? It seems really strange and I wan't to avoid it hapening again.
Secondly, I now have another serious problem. OSX refuses to boot.
I've started the computer in verbose mode and this was the result:
http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpG9ptPf.jpg
** /dev/rdisk02 (NO WRITE)
** Root file system
   Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cads-540.1-34)
I verified the start up disk and its permissions from a Lion install DVD and it passed them with flying colours. I restarted the computer in Safe Mode, but even when booting in safe mode it hangs. Progress bar gets to about 1/3 of the way and then stops. http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpA7jg8J.jpg
I know fsck is file system check, but its been 10minutes and it hasn't budged from that spot. I'll leave it running for an hour or so (I know checking a disk can take a while if its a serious issue), but does anyone have any solutions that don't require me erasing the disk in the event the OS really has gone caput?
Lastly - what would have caused this? The last time I used the computer was the day before yesterday and there were no signs of error. I turned it on today and then all this happened. Fluke? Bad blocks? I'm just concerned because this computer is less than a year old - and to have something like this happen is quite worrisome.
Thank You!

You will hang on "setting default..." if you are are trying to mount NFS filesystems in your /etc/vfstab and you cannot reach the server where these filesystems reside. You can "boot -s" and comment out these filesystems in your vfstab so you can boot or you can resolve why you can't reach the server where the filesystems reside. Metainit pertains to DiskSuite. You may have used DiskSuite to create metadevices.

  • OSX hangs during boot or install

    Hello all,
I'm writing this because I'm not really sure where else to post this at to get an indepth answer. Currently I have a dual G4 450mhz AGP PowerMac that I bought used. When I purchased it, it had 768mb of ram and the only thing it didn't have was a working hard drive. After putting in a new hard drive the system worked great when i intially installed OS9 and later OSX for fun.
However I had to remove the 768mb of RAM because a client PC needed it and that took priority over my dual G4 at the time. Just the other week I purchased 2 x 256mb of RAM from Omni Technologies (omnitechnologies.biz) which guarantees working ram for specified Apple systems.
Upon receiving that ram and installing it, I powered on the G4 only to find it would "hang" when booting OSX (10.3.9). The symptoms are as follows: When powering on I hear the normal chime and the white screen with gray apple logo appears. Seconds later the spinning progress indicator shows up spinning in circles as OSX is booting. However after about 5 minutes with no DVD/hdd activitity, the system then hangs. The gray apple logo changes to a gray 'prohibited' logo. It's the logo of the circle with the slash through it. Like the kind you see over no-smoking signs.
I figured the hard drive was messed up and I decided to reinstall OSX cleanly. However when I booted from the CD by pressing 'c', the EXACT SAME symptoms above happened. It was at this point I started getting really worried. So I decided to remove the hard drive temporarily and boot from the CD just to make sure it really was booting from the CD. Unfortunately the exact same symptoms happened.
Out of desperation to make sure that my hardware was OK, I decided to install OS 9.2.1 which installed and WORKED perfectly. I also installed UbuntuPPC and Slackintosh versions of linux which also installed and worked perfectly.
The issue appears to reside with OSX. I've borrowed friends cd's of 10.2-10.3 and all of them will NOT install. They start to boot from the CD, but never even make it to the first window.
    Help!!
    Brad

Actually trying one stick in each individual slot was one of the first things I did. Unfortunately that did not provide a resolution for me.
Thanks for the links regarding the broken folder/prohibitory sign. I read those and they made mention of resetting the nvram and pram. I just did that a bit earlier today but logging into the open firmware by pressing Option-Command-F-O and typing: reset-nvram; set-defaults; reset-all.
Upon the reboot and after I plugged the hdd with OSX on it back into the system, the resolution was a bit off as I figured. But this time there was no progress indicator. Instead only the gray apple logo showed and there was no response from the hdd or cdrom drive.
I also noticed that the USB mouses red light went out within the first 45 seconds of booting. I swapped out keyboards and mice and the new ones did the same thing as well. I also tested the memory in an imac I have and OSX that is installed ont heimac works gerat with that stick of memory. I'm leaning towards the fact that the memory I have is fine, being that it was ordered from a company that specifically guaranteed it to work on macs of all kinds.
    Any other thoughts or ideas?

  • VirtualBox hangs when booting

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to install Windows in a VM. It goes through some setup, then says Setup is Starting windows. I've run it from command line and there is no debug our anything. Any help would be appreciated. Im running Sun xVM VirtualBox. I'm trying to boot XP SP2. I'm using the GUI to install it. I use default XP settings, then I upped the RAM, still nothing. I'm using a 12GB dynamically sized virtual disk. I tried a fresh install and removed all the VirtualBox files. Still hangs at boot. I wonder if some update broke it...
I also tried to boot from a LiveCD image I have (BackTrack4 beta). The bootloader starts, it starts to load the kernel, and then just hangs. I'm pretty sure its an issue with VBox...

Go to aur and search for virtualbox_bin and you should find this http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=9753 then download the tarball and extract it.
There is a file called PKGBUILD, to put it simply that is the instructions of how to build the package from the sources, but as that is for the latest version you should change a couple of things.
To test the latest previous version you will want to change pkgver to pkgver="2.1.2" and _build to _build="41885".
You can check http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ and try to figure out why it needs to be that, I'm sure it will be useful to you in the future ^^.
Then issue a makepkg, it will download virtualbox from the virtualbox server and it will complain about the md5sum not checking out and thats normal (because the pkgbuild is for a different version), do md5sum downloaded_package and see the value it outputs and replace that on the md5sums lines of the PKGBUILD, then issue makepkg again and it should build just fine (it will not download the file again, just check it).
After it finishes do pacman -U package_you_have_just_built.pkg.tar.gz
Then test virtualbox again. I guess this is a quite dirty way to do this and probably someone will suggest a better way ^^; and you should read the wiki about aur and abs about building packages from source to understand better how to do it and what is going on. I guess that you will want to learn how to use abs and the aur, it is really handy
I hope this helps you more than it confuses you.

  • MBP hangs when booting with network plugged in

My macbook pro (just got it last week) seems to be hanging whenever the wired network is plugged in.
as soon as i pull the network jack out, the MBP finishes booting into OSX. any ideas? is the network controller busted maybe?

    Hi brinox;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
Before jumping to that drastic of a solution for your problem, I would like to ask if you have go into System Preferences and made sure the hard drive is your boot device in Startup Disk. It is possible it is pointing at the network and with nothing plugged in that fails. Please give that a try and let us know the results.

  • MacBook Pro 2010 hangs when booting from Windows install disk

    Hi there,
I'm trying to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp. I've used Bootcamp before so familiar I'm with how it should work. I have a USB CD drive, which I've used on other machines OK, and an official Windows Install Disk.
After Bootcamp finishes copying over all it's drivers etc to my external USB drive, it reboots. However, whenever I try to boot from a disk it always just hangs on the Apple logo (no spinning cog/wheel). This happens whenever the Bootcamp installer performs a reboot and/or when I hold down ALT on startup and select the boot CD.
I can still boot in to mac partition. Could this be a problem with the EFI? Any help with identifying this problem or how get the information to fix this problem would be much appreciated
    Thanks.

  • GRUB hangs when booting Oracle VM Server via USB External Drive

I installed Oracle VM Server 2.1 on USB external drive (/dev/sde - 80gb) with First Sector Boot Partion (/dev/sde1) as /dev/sda1 (MBR) is already occupied. After a successful installation, I changed the hard-disk device sequence (not boot order) so that USB drive is found as first C: drive. All I got was the word 'GRUB' displayed (hangs) and nothing else. How do I get Oracle VM Server to boot? Should I reinstall now that the hard drive sequence has been changed?
    Thank you.

Not Oracle VM-related, so I would say: "Google is your friend!".
Search for "grub change boot sequence": http://www.google.com/search?q=grub%20change%20boot%20sequence

  • Hangs on boot after lion upgrade

I've upgraded to Lion and since upgrading my macbook pro hangs when booting about 4 out of 10  times.  I get to the desktop and then get a never-ending spinning color wheel.
    2.8 Gb core 2 duo
    8 GB ram
    Summer 2009 model

When you boot in single user or safe mode, all third party software is prevented from started. So it is possbile one of your third party party applications that are starting at boot is not compatable with the new RAM. I would try turning it all off and then test them all each in turn.

  • Display out, how to boot from OSX CD with external monitor

    Folks,
My LCD display is broken and I have been using an external monitor for some time, however I'm ready to sell my laptop and wanted to wipe the drive and reload OSX. When I try to boot from the OSX CD I can see part of a desktop on my external monitor and I can see the curser move but some of the desktop is out of view as if the screen wasn't being scaled properly. Any way to make this work so I can see everything?

Hi, mrhifi. I typed a reply earlier, but I must have hit the "Back" button instead of "Post Reply".
After booting to your CD or DVD, press the F7 key to toggle between mirroring and extended-display mode on the external screen. This may give you a complete, usable desktop on that display. However, I don't know that it will work as it should with your built-in display broken. You'll just have to try it and see.

  • Power Mac g5 hangs on boot up when hot

My Power Mac G5 hangs on boot up when hot, such as after I have been using it a while. It won't get through the boot up process and I have a blank (dark) screen- no picture. Sometimes the little Mac chime sound doesn't even complete, and it quits abruptly 1/2 way through the sound.
Once the machine cools it does start... at least so far.

Any Extra Ram, Extra Peripherals, Aftermarket Video Card?
Will it boot with a CD?
When was the last time you checked the RAM in "About this Mac?"
Can you monitor internal temps thru software ?
Possible bad ram, bad power supply, bad video card.
Try removing an extra add-on components and see if that helps.
Also, I've found startup freezes can corrupt HD start-up files badly.
Just had similar issue in my single processor, ancient 1.6 Gig G-5.
Bad Radeon Card. Put the original back in and it works fine.
Google "G-5 Power Supplies" and check out the information....known issue.

  • On my PC, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this?

On my PC running windows XP Service Pack 3, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6 GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this? Corrupted .MOV? Too little RAM? It successfully plays a 162 MB .MOV.

    Hello David,
Thank you for providing all that information about the iTunes issue you are experiencing.  We would first want to rule out any software issues before we can determine if it has to do with RAM.  I found an article that will help you isolate and troubleshoot software issues that could be causing iTunes to behave this way:

  • Macbook Pro hangs when trying to boot from disc

I'm attempting to reinstall OS 10.6, and normally it works just fine. However, I got this computer, it reads the Leopard disc just fine, I restart, hold down C and it just hangs out on the apple logo for hours on end and won't boot to disc.
    Any ideas?

    alainmeyer1 wrote:
Spinning gear? Never in my mac years have I seen a spinning gear when booting from the disc.
You should see what is variously described as a spinner, a spinning gear, or spinning clock appear below the Apple logo during startup any time you start up your Mac, whether from a DVD or HD. The spinner looks like a radial set of lines rotating in a clockwise direction, & indicates the kernel is loading, as described in Intel-based Mac: Startup sequence and error codes, symbols.
Booting from the original snow leopard cd; I don't believe I possess the original restore disc anymore.
In your first post & in your current profile info you indicate this is an MacBook Pro 17" Core i7 model; in your second post here the "Core i7" part is missing. This makes it hard to guess which 17" MBP model you are talking about. Note that each model has a minimum OS build version requirement & cannot start up from a lower version than that. Use the chart in Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs to identify which version this is for your MBP & make sure your Snow Leopard DVD runs that version or later.
For instance, if this is a Core i7 MBP, it must be a Mid 2010 model & requires at least version 10.6.3, build 10D2063a, 10D2094, or 10D2101a. An original Snow Leopard DVD has version 10.6 & will not work with it.

  • Monitor doesnt wake up when booting first time, have to restart - k9n ultra-2f

So, I have few problems. The main problem is in da topic:
I bought an used computer about two weeks ago. I installed windows and all drivers etc.
With the old bios (cant remember what version) all was okay except always in boot an error message was shown that said something that the proseccor could not be recognised but the processor was still shown right in My Computer.. :s
Because of that error message i decided to update bios. I updated it throught live update 3 to v.3.6 and now i dont get the processor error message but the monitor doesnt wake up in the boot.. I have to press reset button and then when the monitor wakes up there comes an error message what says something like "Warning!!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed, and the system is restored to the defauls settings". Then I press any key and windows boots normally.
I reupdated v.3.6 bios today manually from floppydisk but the problem didnt go anywhere.
I have searched this forum but cant find same kind of problem posted.
Can somebody please help me with this and tell what could be the problem?
Also when booting second time so that the monitor wakes up, i get four alert sounds.. What could those mean?
My computer is pretty powerful (amd athlon 64 5600+ x2, club3d gf 7950gt, 2gb 533mhz..) It should be very smooth and fast but it often appears slowliness and ..how can i say it.. temporary tilting? :p And the 3dmark03 benchmark gives me 19465 points, it should be giving much more. The computer is clean, no viruses or adware. What could cause this?
Sorry for the messy message and bad english and im not really good at computers

    Thanks for the reply.
I didnt have this issue before updating BIOS..
And i didnt find jbat1 from my k9n ultra-2f. I didnt even find it from the mb manual. Theres only a Clear CMOS Button: SW2. I pushed it few times and then i rebooted my computer. At the first time the monitor woke up instantly and i was like wohooooo but then i shut down the computer and booted it again.. The monitor didnt wake up before pressing the reset button, the same problem was back.
I think that the SW2 button reset the bios settings like the jbat1 would do, because i had disabled the big logo at the boot and after pressing SW2 the logo was back.
Then i set the memory vcore to 2.0V but it didnt help. Infact i think the computer had come a bit more slowly.. :s I think it may be the RAM what makes my comp so slow... dunno.
