I have a 2004 G4 flat panel iMac and it came with OSX Jaguar. Then I upgraded it to OSX Panther. After a day of Panther, it did not boot up. I think a system file was moved. Then I got the instal disk for Tiger. That didn't work. It just stayed on the Apple logo and the loading sign forever. So then I got it to boot into OS9, which works, but most programs do not work with it. After about a month, my Mac did't boot up into OS9 even. And my iMac never had an AirPortExpress Card installed. What do I do?

What computer did you use to post your message? Please do not use Impact font here again - it is unreadable.
I have had hangs with Tiger installs before. Often, but not always, you can power down and it is OK when you restart.
Do you have important data on the G4 which is not backed up elsewhere?
If not try the a clean install but be aware that all settings and data will be lost:
After the DVD or CD loads select your language and click the Continue button.
When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In Disk Utility select your hard drive and erase it.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
After the process has completed quit Disk Utility and return to the installer.
Now complete the install.

Brand new MacBook -- how can it communicate with my old iMac

I just got a new 2.2 GHz MacBook (black) with the current version of Leopard installed (10.5 I guess, I'm posting this from my PC at work, so I can't check). No real problems so far. I've been able to access the Internet through my cable modem at home (had to unplug my desktop, more on that below) and through Wi-Fi.
I still have and plan to keep my G3 iMac desktop machine, running OS 10.2.8, and my basic question is how I can get my two Macs to talk with each other. I don't currently have any sort of network at home -- I'm the only computer user. Setting up an AirPort station would make sense, since it would allow me to use the MacBook anywhere in the house. I'd need to install an AirPort card in the iMac, and the card that's currently available in the online Mac store is AirPort Extreme, which I don't think would work with the old iMac. (The specs say "AirPort Extreme Cards cannot be used in AirPort-ready computers with an AirPort Card slot.") Does any one know if there's a way to use the same AirPort station with both computers.
Since the primary reason for the computers to communication with each other would be to share files, connecting them with some sort of cable would be another option. When I asked the Apple store salesman what I would need, he sold me an Ethernet cable, but that doesn't seem to do the job. If I connect it to the Ethernet ports on both machines, they don't seem to see each other. Do I need some kind of router to connect both machines? Actually if there was a router that connected both computers to the cable modem, one cable could go to the iMac and the other to an AirPort station that would communicate with the MacBook, solving my issue above. Can I do anything via USB ports?
If all else fails, I could e-mail files to myself, but seems a rather roundabout way of doing things.

Usually you use a router as the hub for the computers to talk to each other over Ethernet wires or WiFi. When you hook the two computers up directly, you need a cross-over Ethernet cable, which is different from a standard Ethernet cable. (Although some of the newer computers can sense and use either, but I'm not sure about the older G3.)
A wired/wireless router would definitely be the way to go, why not take advantage of your MacBook wireless capability? This will let you share the internet connection, share files, and a printer between the two computers. Just about any router would work from Netgear, Linksys, Newer Technology, or the Apple Airport. Using an Airport Extreme Base Station would allow you to use an Ethernet cable for the G3 iMac and the WiFi for the Macbook. I currently use one this way with my older G3 Desktop and a MacBook. (I think the first time you start up the Airport you configure it over the Ethernet cable, I don't remember if you can do it wirelessly or not the first time.) You plug the cable modem into the router, then each computer into the router, (or connect over WiFi).
Once you have the Airport set up you can turn on file sharing and access each other's hard drive and printer over the network. Should you ever get a PC or have a visitor with one, they can connect also. Set up the password protected encryption and don't broadcast the network name so passersby can't see and connect to your network.

It is almost impossible to diagnose sounds over the internet, however here is a link to some failing HD sounds. If one of yours be happy, at any rate take it in for service. If you got AppleCare or it's less than a year old it's covered.

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. My friend has a very old iMac, running OS X 8.6, that isn't connecting to the internet. It is connected directly to an Embarq (Zyxel) 660 DSL modem. The modems lights are are all lit, including the ethernet light. I've set the TCP/IP settings to DHCP, but I can't get into the modem to find out what the DNS is. I've tried using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator to access the internet but it keeps telling me that the TCP/IP needs to be configured and activated. I've tried restarting the iMac after saving the TCP/IP settings, and have tried restarting the modem.
Can somebody give me a solution? or a way to configure the iMac to view the internet?

I suggest you try to find another computer and connected it to the DSL modem. This way you can verify that the connection works. You could try and find yourself a router and use it as an intermediary.
You could try to configure the connection manually. You would have to figure out the router address and DNS address. The DNS Server addresses for Open DNS are at.

You might find 0TTool useful for debugging. It allows you to do a ping.

Hi, I am a new iMac owner.
Being a network engineer and having worked for the "devil" himself, let me tell you... I would rather be dealing with the tiny glitches with the new iMac than owning a Dell, Toshiba, HP but most importantly running Vista!
This is a new machine with new HW and drivers. I enjoy trying the latest and the greatest. I realize there will be hurdles to overcome with any new product, but come one people! Let's stop whining, and help everyone out here. We are all here to provide constructive feedback to Apple while helping everyone out.
Yes there Display issues.
Yes there are Keyboard issues.
Yes there are WoW issue and UT as well.
Target disk issues.. Yes
Lock ups.. sure!
My suggestion... If you think you are better off with a PC and Vista, well go to it mate!
Sorry for the ramble, but I just got tired of all the whiners thinking that buying an iMac was their solution to never having issues by leaving the PC world, or should I say MSWorld... LOL

I think few, if any people claimed they were going to ditch their new iMac for a PC. I like Macs, but I don't love them like I used to.
Half the reason people buy them, is because they think they can rely on Macs more. They are supposed to be stable, fuss free and easy to use. And they still are for the most part.
But these new iMacs make a complete mockery of that because they don't represent very well what Apple stands for. "If" I bought a PC I would honestly expect some problems here & there. Its just part and parcel of the PC package. And although I don't expect Macs to be 100% perfect 100% of the time, I certainly expect better than this diabolical shambles that is the new iMac.
Just as an example.. My 4 year old G4 powerbook.. Not 100% problem free, granted. But mighty close. However, it has not crashed once the entire time I have had it. My new iMac however, crashed 4 times yesterday alone, and it didn't even get used as much as my old powerbook.
Maybe now you get the picture a little better?

Can a nano work with an old imac w/o os x?

i have a very old imac and was wondering if it's possible to transfer songs i've burned from cds onto the ipod nano without using itunes? the imac's so old, i don't think it can, nor do i want to, install os x on it, and i read itunes can only work with os x.
i realize i can't buy music using itunes, but can i drop songs into it? thanks.

If I am not mistaken you can not add music to the nano as some users have stated once used to be possible with older iPods. Even if you have no intention of purchasing music via iTunes it seems to be the only way to manage your ipod unless you are using it solely as a disk drive and not as player. There may be some third party softwares out there that allow such use, but I would not know.

Sharing broadband with my old imac

Hi I have an emac running tiger and a very old imac, the first model, currently running 8.6. I bought a wireless ethernet bridge to share broadband and configured everything with the internet setup assistant. This ran beautifully for a day, with IE browsing the web and outlook picking up mail.
Now it has stopped. Both applications just give a failed to connect error. I have looked in the tcp ip and ethernet control panels and everything seems to be ok. The wireless network is working, I can ping both the ethernet bridge and the imac from my emac.
2 questions
1) What can I do to diagnose and fix the error?
2) Would any of this be significantly easier under Mac OS 9?

3) Can I get filesharing working in either direction, now my network is up

As Simon says, Tiger and 8.6 won't network. Either you upgrade to OS 9 (it has TCP\IP networking as a FileSharing option) or downgrade to Panther—which has very balky networking compared to 8 and 9 BTW; Jaguar was apparently slicker—or you'll have to be content w/ emailing or sneakerware between machines. Given Apple's no-recordable-media stinginess on the original iMac, that latter is only an option if you have an outboard device for it.
The procedure's similar once you have two compatible OS's, though the names of the controls for the settings are unaccountably different. Enable sharing c/w owner's names and passwords on each (SystemPrefs or Control Panels). Enable an ethernet connection on each (NetworkPane, AppleTalkCP). Select items to be shared on th old-world machine, and set their sharing status as desired (GetInfo…).
If you are doing anything more complex than the same—letter for letter mind you—owner/pwrd on both, go back to FileSharing CP and name your other users. On your X machine, if you want access to anything beyond Shared and Public folders by the admin, hire a sysadmin. Hire one anyway if you can afford it; Tiger may have simmered down, but to one used to the simple elegance of old AppleTalk networking, X's is a jungle of jargonry and nerdisms—check the Networking discussions for yourself.
Finally. w/ both machines plugged into a 'hot' ethernet connection—another active computer or a router—boot up and find your target (Chooser or the Network blob-thingy-that-isn't-an-application-or-CP-but-exists-only-as-a-poofter-in-the -Dock-and-Sidebar-soApple-calls-it-an-alias-though-you-never-see-it's-original) And if you like nerdery as much as X, you can also find and type in IP addies (Finder>Go>Connect to server…, Chooser: Enter IP address)

Problems with my old iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM

Ok guys...
Lucky for me I have a brand new intel pro duo iMac.. but I still have the urge to fix (or at least try to fix) my old mac.
Its an iMac 500MHz with 128MB of RAM running OSX 10.2.8 and its giving me tons of problems...
But theres one problem thats bugging me the most! For whatever reason I can't click and drag files! You'd think it would be the mouse... but the thing is that it registers a hold down click cause I can make a highlight box on the desktop, highlight text, ect.
Is there some known "you can drag files" problem with OSX? It doesnt sound like that big of a deal.. but it ***** when I cant drag files in or out of the trash... put apps in the application folder... ect.
Can anyone help me?

Gaming Issue with new 17" iMac (got it 3 days ago)

This has happened about 6 times now while playing the starcraft on my new 17" iMac computer. While playing all of a sudden the game will crash and give me a error message which says that due to a unknown error the application starcraft has been forced to close...I just bought this computer because I heard they are more reliable then PC's but what is going on, I really don't know where to post this question but the game requires the cd-rom to be in the drive to play it so I don't know if it is a cd-rom problem or problem with the actual computer...please help me out here.
The game is 10 years old now so it shouldn't be a compatability issue.
System information:
Hard Drive - 500gb
Ram - 2 gb
Processor - dual core 2.16
CD Drive - Superdrive

Contrary to what you might think, it's most certainly a compatibility problem. Imagine running a 10-year-old DOS game on Windows Vista or XP, doesn't matter how fast/reliable the OS is, there are bound to be problems.
You have the Mac version with latest updates, but you are still running a 10-year old game on a non-native system (it ran in System 9 when it first came out). It's still powerpc app that need to be translated at run-time to run on your intel Mac. If it runs, fine, if it doesn't, it's not supported anyway. You have to ask Blizzard see if they will release universal binary updates (not very likely).
Or, like suggested above, get the windows version since you can have windows in bootcamp.
Regarding performances, I'm running a 3-year-old game Homeworld 2 in rosetta, and it's perfectly playable, so rosetta is actually quite fast now.

Upgraded from Elements 9 to 12 since upgrading from Windows 7 to 8.1 - Issues with my old psd's.

Hi - in regards to moving up to the newer version of Elements, I find that all the psd files I was in the middle of working with (all of them multi-layered) don't seem to be associated with photoshop anymore. When I double-click them, windows asks me what app I'd like to open them with. If I open photoshop I can open the psd files from there, however.
I made the change from Elements 9 to 12 because after installing Windows 8.1 the older Elements got weird and "buggy." I actually would've preferred to keep 9 (so if anyone's aware of "fixes" or "upgrades" for 9 that help it to work better with Windows 8.1, please let me know)!
Also, I see that the old layers panel, where I can see all my different layers and move them around to front or back, isn't there. I did see that it's possible to select "Layers" from the menu, but it's greyed out.
I'm wondering if I somehow "lost" something switching over, and I wonder if there's something I can do to get my psd's to open in Elements more-or-less like they used to.
I should say that I jumped from Elements 9 up to 11, so I do realize there have of course been many many changes in the interim (I'd previously made the jump from 5 up to 9) and it'll take time for me to relearn, but this particular issue seems like it might be more of a glitch than me not knowing the new version yet.
I should also mention that the psd files don't have an Elements icon anymore - just a white square.

If Layers is greyed out it possibly means that you are in Quick Mode. Select 'Expert' and all the options should become available.
Try permanently associating psd files with C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe and see if that fixes the issue. Instructions here - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default.

Save for web&.... the image exceeds the size for ....issue with AI on imac i7

Hi,
I just upgraded from using macbook Pro to Imac inte core i7 with 4GB. I use illustrator CS3 for high resolution documents i.e saving a Design for say maybe saving for iphone &ipod skin; a quality jpg that is 1300px(width) by 2000px(height.
General information
The issue is I keep getting the pop up with:
The image exceeds the size Save for Web was designed for. You may experience out of memory erros and slow performance. Are you sure you want to continue?
I click yes, but get another pop up with:
Could not complete this operation. The rastarized image exceeded the maximum bounds for save for web.
And last weekend after NOT being able to save anything I went and bought 16GB memory thinking that this ussue would be solved, but nada.
I have researched around here and google only to find about scratch disk: went to preferences then to plug-ins and scratch Disks -I seem NOT to get to the bottom of this at all.
And this morning I was trying to create a pattern Design and could not even get the design on the color swatches as I have done before with macbook pro with 4GB -IT'S NOT FUN, because I am NOT doing it right. Do you care to help me out?

Are you including a color profile? What metadata are you including with it?
How many pixels (h x v)?
50 kb is not all that big. Does your image have a lot of detail in it? Content can affect final compressed size.
