Osx keeps losing favorites after ejecting drive

Hi All,
OSX 10.8.4 and maybe other's?  I have an external USB disk connect directly to the machine and I can add folders that reside on it to the sidebar favorites without issue.  However if I unmount the drive they all disappear and do not return upon reconnecting the drive.
Is there a way to have them stay in or return to the sidebar?
Thanks!

There should be a "Where" value as well.
_If not go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utility.
_Once you open Disk Utility, on the left you will see an icon for any drive mounted on the computer.
__Look for the name of this phantom drive that keeps showing up. It should be here.
_Click on it once and then look down at the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you should see a line that says "Mount Point". Let me know what this says.
In addition look on the left to see if the name of this drive is indented underneath another icon. If so click on that icon and see if there is information at the bottom of the screen that says "Disk Image Path" with a directory path "/blah blah/blah blah/" etc.
Also, check in Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Make sure the drive is not listed here.

  • USB drive keep showing up after eject

I just bought a USB drive today and everything works perfectly except - after 3-4 seconds after I ejected the disk, it will keep showing up in Finder automatically and it keeps doing that everytime I ejected it. I disconnect the usb drive between the gap (after eject and its auto re-mount). So, anybody know what's the problem here? I verify and repair the usb disk (as well as my internal hard drive) in disk utility, but still the problem keeps showing up.

    Adnan,
    two suggestions:
    1) Try it using a different Mac
    2) Create a new user account and check things there

  • Losing Favorites after Syncing with Computer

I'm actually asking this on behalf of my mom. She has an iphone and sets up her favorites for speed dials, and then after she syncs with her imac they all disappear. I helped her set them up again on the iphone, then did a test sync and checked and they were still there. Now she says they're gone again, after another sync.
Does anyone know how to keep the favorites from disappearing? Are you supposed to set favorites in the address book on your computer or something?
Thanks for any tips! I have an ipod touch, so I'm not much help for her on this problem.

I have an additional yet related question, and a possible solution for the original question asked-unfortunately not for my dilemma.
    1) Possible solution... I am in the process of restoring my new iphone, had an issue and genius bar replaced it today. They said my bookmarks were going to sync to the new phone if I had backed up properly. Upon looking through the iphone menu in itunes, when my new phone was syncing I noticed an option at the bottom of the info tab page-it gave the option to back up bookmarks from internet explorer if checked. I never had this option checked, and had another "sub-option" to replace information on the iphone -I assume it syncs your favorites with ie bookmarks, maybe your Mom has these options checked??? It seems as though if she did, itunes is removing the bookmark if it's not in ie bookmarks as well.
    2) My related question...I never had the "sync with ie bookmarks" checked, and I back up my phone pretty much every day. Upon restoring or syncing my new phone today, everything (contacts etc) was restored to my last sync, last night... EXCEPT my bookmarks/home screen icons. Those restored to "several syncs ago" Maybe as far back as a month. Anyone have a clue how to access and/or sync my bookmarks as of recent, or am I out of luck? Does the iphone have any backup folder to explore on my hard drive? Maybe the iphone and itunes only back up bookmarks/icons every so often, and if so is there a way to change the settings to sync bookmarks every time?
I just organized and renamed all my homescreen icons yesterday, prior to backing my last sync and I really don't want to have to again. Plus I have several new bookmarks and icons added since the set currently restored, I use them frequently and hate the thought of hunting through web apps to find them again. Help!

  • Keep losing DWC130 external USB drive

I keep losing the connection to the DWC130 External USB drive on Windows 8.1. If I leave a Windows Explorer window open, after 10 minutes or so when I go to the external Toshiba drive its like it has lost its connection. The drive dissappears from the list of connected drives, and after a few seconds a new window opens with a refreshed connection to the drive. Why do I keep losing this live connection to the drive? How can I stablize this?

I read something about some of these external drives needing more power, even when plugged into the USB 3 port. The article suggested a "Y" connector to allow the one drive to plug into two USB 3 ports simultaneously. I guess that's possible, but before doing so I'm going to call my local computer center today where I purchased the hard drive to see if they know of this problem and how to resolve it.
Actually, that is NOT possible. The DWC130 external drive has a power adaptor and plugs into an outlet for its power source. So, something else is at play here.

  • Why doI keep losing firefox after I update?

Every time I update Firefox I keep getting a message telling me" I am running an old version and need to update". After Firefox loads, the rest of the info doesn't come up, like,"click run", only the"click save" comes up. So, I would guess it isn't completing the update. Why is this happening? I'm still running the old version.

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode or with a reduced screen resolution.
You can check that in the "Compatibility" tab in the Properties via the right-click context menu of the Firefox desktop shortcut.
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Keep losing service after a day

Each morning that i come in and check my sun ray server that i installed on a 4200, it seems to have dropped the service somehow. A utrestart doesn't work and trying the restart (both warm and cold) from the web administration page just give errors. I am running the v4 beta( sun-ray 3.1 with the latest patch, and the sunray connector). One thing that did seem odd to me is that i attempted to add the t-patch that was in the 3.1 zipped file. I got errors saying it was already installed, however when I did a showrev -p there was no 120880 patch. Everything seems to work just fine after a system reboot, but that is the only hting I can do to get the service back. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
    Tony

What does "has dropped the service" mean? What do the Sun Rays show at that point?
Are the Sun Ray daemons -- utauthd, utessiond -- still running on the server? (utauthd is actually a Java process so look for 'java ... utauthd'.) If you run utgstatus at that point what does it show?
What do the last few messages in the logfiles in /var/opt/SUNWutt/log say?
When you try utrestart, what happens?
When you try to restart from the GUI, what happens? What messages get written to the admin_log file in /var/opt/SUNWut/log?
SRSS keeps a lot of state in /tmp/SUNWut. Do you run an overnight cron job that tries to "tidy up" /tmp? If something is deleting the SRSS files in there that can certainly be enough to break Sun Ray.

  • Keeping itunes library after hard drive has been wiped

Help! We had a problem with our computer in that the whole hard drive was wiped so it's gone back to factory settings. Does this now mean that we'll have to start again and put the whole library of songs back on? I've got over 2,000 songs on my ipod so really want to avoid this if I can.
    Cheers

  • I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5.  I keep losing access to my internal hard drive.  I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours.  Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive.  I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive.  The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal.  Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing).  It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?

  • Time Machine reverts to Macintosh HD after external drive is ejected

I've seeing a problem with Time Machine with one of my external drives.  Here's my setup:
    MBP 15"
    OSX 10.7.4
Work external drive - Seagate GoFlex, via USB
Home external drive - Western Digital Green, via USB
I had been using both home and work drives as Time Machine backups, and things were working fine.  I would have to re-designate the appropriate Time Machine backup drive when I changed locations, but everything was working.
    The problem:
When I attach the work drive and point Time Machine to the drive, it works.  When I eject the work drive, the Time Machine prefs panel shows "Time Machine - work" in greyed out text as the target drive, reflecting that the drive is not available.
When I attach the home drive and point Time Machine to the drive, it works.  But when I eject the home drive, the Time Machine prefs panel shows "Macintosh HD" in normal text as the target drive.  Worse, I think it actually attempts to back up to the internal drive, because at the next Time Machine backup interval, I get a "The identity of the backup disk has changed" error from Time Machine.
I've tried a full reset of Time Machine by deleting the prefs file.  I've also tried verifying the home external disk.  The problem persists.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    stevekim wrote:
I did indeed have the /Backups.backupdb folder, but deleting it did not solve the problem.  I thought that was the local backup folder (disabled by executing "tmutil disablelocal")?
No, Local Snapshots are in a hidden .MobileBackups folder.   The /Backups.backupdb folder was created by Time Machine trying to make actual backups to the internal HD.
EDIT:  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #30 for the gory details.
Reformatting the WD Time Machine partitiion and resetting Time Machine (turning off TM, deleting the prefs file, restarting) seems to have fixed the problem, though.
Curious.  Keep an eye on it, especially when the backup drive isn't available, and a backup is scheduled.  That seems to be when the trouble starts.

Stay tuned on that one.  The rumor sites say that can be automated in Mountain Lion.  See the last point in the How it Works section here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Machine_(Mac_OS)

  • Nano keeps randomly reconnecting after it's been ejected.

My 5th Generation Nano ipod randomly reconnects while charging, after I have ejected it using i-tunes or my computer. Each time I have to wait for it to finish syncing, to eject it again. This repeats 1-4 times per charge.
The standard charging cable was new when I bought it, and doesn't appear to have any problems.
    Any suggestions?

After Eject, the drive disappears from Finder, stops spinning and its light starts a slow blinking pattern,
This is probably normal. Some drives blink when being written to/read from, while others blink unless read/write is occuring.
but in Disk Utility the volume appears greyed-out and unmounted while the HD is still visible (not greyed-out). If you try to re-eject it from there nothing happens...
If this is just for a few seconds, that's normal. If it's permanent, it's not.
Disconnecting the HD's USB cable after a normal Eject (from the Finder), does not prompt any type of "incorrect ejection of volume" messages.
    Normal/good.
Other drives that I tried, only differ in the activity of their light post-ejection - some stay still, others blink.
    See above.
Just for reference, when I eject a USB Pendrive from Finder, it disappears completely and stops blinking.
Normal; a flash drive has no source of power and could not possibly keep blinking.

  • External drive conntected to Time Capsule keeps losing connection

I've been having this problem since I bought my TC over one year ago. Other than this everything works fine (aside from the occasional need for a restart).
I have an external 500GB drive attached to my 500GB TC via usb. I use the TC strictly for backups and the other drive to host my media files. When I want to use those files I switch on the drive. Only about half of the time does that work. When it does work everything is fine. I see the drive in the finder as expected.
When it doesn't work, I can see the drive name in the finder. But if I click to go into the folder, I get an error saying that the connection cannot be found.
It shows up in the Airport Utility as normal.
Powering the drive off and on does not help.
Relaunching the finder doesn't help either.
The only way I can connect to the drive again is to either logoff and log back into my mac, or restart the TC.
It seems that my computer is remembering some kind of network disk mounting settings that don't get refreshed when I turn on the drive, but then do get refreshed when I logoff and back in. Does anyone know how I could force that refresh to happen? Has anyone had this problem before?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
PS all my software and firmware are the latest.
    Thanks.

  • LaCie external hard drive keeps losing connection to Windows 8.1 computer

    Hello all,
My LaCie external hard drive (Rugged version) seems like it keeps losing connection to my brand new Windows 8.1 laptop. The laptop is an HP Pavillion 15-p 133cl TouchSmart Notebook which I just got today. Basically, every few minutes, or if I nudge the external
a bit, the computer will seem like it disconnected and reconnected to the external hard drive in a split second and bring it up in the Windows Explorer. This external hard drive doesn't show any problems connecting to any other computer, but it has occurred
with 2/3 ports on this computer so far. I'm a bit worried, because I definitely DO NOT want the files on this external to get corrupted in any way. What should I do? Thanks a bunch.

may I know your external HDD model, to check which USB version to isolate power and cable connection issue
if this is USB 3.0 try to attached at USB 3.0 at your laptop, your laptop has 2 USB 3.0 and 1 for 2.0, for external HDD with USB 2.0 sometimes need more power / more than 1 connection, sometimes the power will loose
but since the trigger it will disconnect if you nudge the HDD, I suggest back up data to your laptop first, try to change with other data or power cable, try also update your laptop chipset
try to check with other device to isolate port issue
may I know if you are using other PC, did your external HDD also will disconnect if you nudge it?
contact your external HDD manufactured to get some suggestion
