OSX keeps stalling

Hi there,
OSX keeps stalling every 5 to 10 minutes for about 30 seconds to a Minute. What I mean by stalling is I am unable to type anything in my word documents or my firefox windows. Running activity monitor freezes as well and just before the freeze I can see that the CPU usage is about 87% idle.
1) I created a new user and still the problem persists.
2) I ran disk permissions about three times and rebooted
3) ran macjanitor and rebooted.
4) Ran drive test from the CD and drive tests fine.
what else can I check?
Cheers,
noah

Noah, do you get a spinning beach ball ever when this happens. That has been happening to me for a while now. I'm guessing bad memory or a bad hard drive with intermittent failure. In my case I tried reformatting and reinstalling the OS, and it seemed to work ok for a while, but then I recovered my LARGE storage of email (about 4k messages, some with large attachments in Mail) and the problem started again.
I don't know if that's circumstantial or not, but I've cleared most of my Mail, quit Mail processes (Activity Monitor showed Mail taking up some RAM - about 30MB) and will test it out for a bit, including a restart.
I still suspect memory or the HD, but I'll try to let you know how my test goes.

  • How can I get my ipod touch to properly sync all my songs, when it keeps stalling in different stages and hours later doesn't sync all the songs I checked?

I can't seem to get all my songs and playlists that are checked to sync to my ipod touch. The ipod has been troublesome since the first round of updates. It was originally set on "itunes match", but it was dropping songs for some reason and since the wifi only operates when I'm in a place where wifi is available, I can't download the songs again while I'm on the road. I turned off itunes match and plugged it in to my computer to sync it that way, and it keeps stalling in different stages of the sync process. After hours and hours of being stuck, it "completes" without syncing any of my playlists that I checked.

Try a low level reformat of the iPod's hard drive to possibly try and repair some of its damage. Use the instructions in this article to walk you through the process.

  • My iMac OSX keep shutting down

My iMac OSX keep shutting down randomly. It goes to a black screen to a blue screen and then shuts off. I have to unplug and replug it in to get it going again. It's happening everyday... has anyone had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

  • Slideshow with music keeps stalling

My Aperture slideshow with music keeps stalling in various places.

    G'day RittDog
It's relatively easy if you're prepared to spend the time doing it.
    • First, forget about the slideshow option. Instead, open up an iMovie project and import your slides into it (ensure you're first set to NTSC for the US of A). Use the Ken Burns effect if you want. Also, add transitions between slides. Unlike the slideshow, you can use different transitions for each slide if your tastes run to it. Don't forget to set the required time for each slide.
    • Add your music track(s)
    • Now, using something like Audacity (it's free), record your voice over tracks (one per slide) for each slide (you do have a microphone/iSight don't you?). Set Audacity to 48,000 Hz by the way. Trim the tracks, or select the appropriate part. Export the trimmed tracks or the selection as AIFF files to a folder.
    • Import the AIFF files into itunes, and use from there, or open the AIFF folder into the media/audio window, or simply drag & drop them. Place them into the middle track in iMovie. Arrange each voiceover to it's appropriate slide.
    • Dampen the music during each voiceover, or for the whole show.
    • Export to iDVD, burn as disk image.
    • If you really, really want to have the voiceovers as a choice, export a Quicktime movie WITHOUT the voiceovers (untick them via the box alongside the right of the track), and then export again WITH the voiceovers (different name of course). Import the two movies into a suitable iDVD menu, with a button for each.
    Regards
    Santa

  • I upgraded itunes and was trying to upgrade to ios 5 on my 3gs but itunes keeps stalling

Itunes keeps stalling. I left it all night but got no progress at all.  It virtually overloads my computer.  Pc Windows 7, Dual Core 2.3 GHz, 3 GB Ram, 64 bit.

All this and I still don't have enough space on my startup disk, but that's another whole question!
No, this should be the number one thing you are concerned about.
Until you get this sorted, there is a good chance you may simply lose everything.
Do you hav ean external drive?
If so copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external drive.
Then you can delete /Music/iTunes/ empty the trash and recover this space.
Do this then Apple menu > Software update.
    Restart the computer
    Then post back.

  • IWeb publishing keeps stalling out!! Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this??

I'm new to all of this - only been working on a site for about a month now.  I haven't run into a problem until just recently.  I just tried to publish updates I've made to the website and it seems to keep stalling out during the "publishing" time!  I do have several pictures on the website but no blog and I know I have not exceeded the alloted free space. This is so frustrating!  Does anyone have a solution???

This can be caused by using a wireless connection to the internet. Try connecting to the modem with an ethernet cable if you can to rule this out as a possible problem.

  • My Mac keeps stalling

As previously stated my mac keeps stalling out, I will open iTunes (for example) and it will be unresponsive for a couple moments then the colorful ball will appear and after a few minutes of that it will either fail or be sporadic and continue to not work properly until it does fail and close out. As a side note I have recently started using the software Virtual DJ and am suspecting it may be a RAM issue? I've had the program downloaded (everything was fine) for a while but I just recently picked it up again and now I can't get either my iTunes or VDJ to work correctly 8 out of 10 times. Help and tips would be greatly appreciated, please and thanks.
PS. Safari and all other applications seem to be working just fine, its just my music applications that seem to be the problem. I also have 1T of memory on here so memory space should not be a problem either.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

  • OSX keep resetting

    Hello.
As the topic says OSX keep resetting itself. I have a MacBook, not C2D, 2Ghz with 2GB RAM. I'll describe it a lil' better below.
It started maybe a week back. I restarted my MacBook, but when the desktop loaded the dock and the iconsizes where set back to default. I thought this was strange but just set them back as I use to have them. Though I discoverd it was more to it. All programs keep reseting themself when I started them. I could change the settings and run the program without problems, but when I restarted, it was back to default again. So I booted with the MacInstall disc and did a repair though discutility there. It found some errors and fixed them, all good. Still I had the same problem when I restarted my Mac. So I decided to reinstall OSX, after that everything worked fine.
Until today when I got the same error, I restarted my Mac after a night's uptime. And I got the same error once again, everything goes back to default all the time.
Though I am sick of reinstalling OSX, takes quite some time and I wanna be able to solve this problem and know why this happends.
Anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

  • Adobe Bridge CC keeps stalling

Adobe bridge keeps crashing. Whenever I open bridge, it asks me to purge my cache, which I do. After viewing my folders for a while, and it doesn't matter which hard or folder I view ( I use multiple hard drives depending on the project and client), eventually it will crash, or rather stall and not respond, even after several minutes. Neither does restarting my computer.
In general, I have found CC aps to be pretty buggy-does anyone else have this problem? I did make a call to tech support a month ago, but it really didn't solve the issue, and right now, Bridge is unuseable.
I'm going to trash my preferences and reset my pram-hope this will help, but any insights would be helpful. I have about 16 gigs of ram, and CS6 and 5 worked fine.
    All best–

I'm going to trash my preferences and reset my pram-hope this will help
Since you mention PRAM I reckon you are on a Mac?
    Try this first, quit Bridge
In user library (by default hidden per OSX 10.7 use menu Go with option key to reveal):
user library/ preferences: inhere find and delete the Bridge6.plist file
user library/ caches/ Adobe/ Bridge CC : inhere find and delete both Cache folder and plug in
(all deleted items will refresh itself with new and empty ones after restarting Bridge)
Restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset prefs (you need to set your custom changes in prefs again because they are set to factory default).
    Then try again.

  • Osx keeps losing favorites after ejecting drive

    Hi All,
OSX 10.8.4 and maybe other's?  I have an external USB disk connect directly to the machine and I can add folders that reside on it to the sidebar favorites without issue.  However if I unmount the drive they all disappear and do not return upon reconnecting the drive.
Is there a way to have them stay in or return to the sidebar?
    Thanks!

There should be a "Where" value as well.
_If not go to Go > Utilities > Disk Utility.
_Once you open Disk Utility, on the left you will see an icon for any drive mounted on the computer.
__Look for the name of this phantom drive that keeps showing up. It should be here.
_Click on it once and then look down at the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you should see a line that says "Mount Point". Let me know what this says.
In addition look on the left to see if the name of this drive is indented underneath another icon. If so click on that icon and see if there is information at the bottom of the screen that says "Disk Image Path" with a directory path "/blah blah/blah blah/" etc.
Also, check in Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. Make sure the drive is not listed here.
