OSX Lion fonts show up as unix files

We have a brand new iMac with Lion pre-installed. When trying to install our fonts, a lot of them show up as unix files. Mostly Postscript Type 1 fonts like:
Zapf Chancery
Friz Quadrata
Souvenier
Avant Garde
Interstate
Revue
Berkley Old Style
Impact
Garamond 3
When trying to replace these fonts with ones that are working, like OpenType, in InDesign CS5.5, words in text boxes completely disappear, making it impossible to select the words and change the font. We have hundreds of InDesign files with small advertisements, which we need to replace fonts on. I would say each InDesign file contains about 30 different fonts being used, creating a big headache! Is there a solution out there for postscript type 1 fonts in Lion??
We have tried FontBook, a Font Server (Universal Type), and installing directly to the Library>Fonts folder.

Could it be a compatibility issue with the Intel chip? I would think not, but this is unexplainable.
Correct. The CPU doesn't have anything to do with it. There have been other posts here though with people having trouble with fonts on the new Macs.
That said, there isn't (shouldn't be) any problem with fonts on an Intel based Mac. Are you keeping the Type 1 PS fonts together? That is, the suitcase of screen fonts and printer outline fonts in the same folder? It's required for those types of fonts in order for them to work.
And one other thing. If you try and copy them over while they are active (in a Fonts folder) on the other Mac, that won't work either. Make copies of them on the source Mac first to a dummy folder that is not inside any of the Fonts folder. The desktop will do. Then copy those duplicates over.

  • Even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?

even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?... Help?!

Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder?  There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files.  If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Fonts showing up as Unix executible files in snow leopard

    Hello,
We just upgraded to new imacs with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and almost all of our fonts located on the hard drive are showing up as Unix Executable files with 0kb. Besides having problems installing these into Suitcase Fusion 2, I think the fact that they are showing up this way initially may be the root of the problem with Suitcase. Is anyone else experiencing this and what can I do to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Kristie

So, the fonts are showing up fine on the mac with tiger (10.4.11) which is reading them from the network server (Windows drive)...
Whew! Good. Some servers are set up to allow this, others kill any resource fork dependent fonts you put on them.
By default, when you copy any Mac files to a Windows formatted drive (NTFS, FAT32), you end up with two files. Once for the data fork, and one for the resource fork. So say you have a legacy TrueType font named Basil. On the Windows drive, a file named Basil will be created for the data fork, which is the one you will see from your Mac. OS X will also create a file name ._Basil to store the resource fork data. You don't see this one from your Mac because it starts with a period. Any such file is automatically hidden from the user's view in OS X.
Anyway, you can try two things. One, copy the files from the server to the Mac running Tiger. When you copy such split files back to a Mac formatted drive, they are automatically put back together by OS X into a normal Mac data/resource file. If that works (they maintain their size once copied back to that Mac), then you can put them on a flash drive and bring them over to the Macs running Snow Leopard.
Else, you can have IT look into what's wrong/different with the network setup in the new Macs that they aren't reading the networked fonts the same way the Tiger computer is. Right now, they're not seeing the ._xxx resource fork data.
On top of that, assuming the fonts do copy back correctly to the Mac running Tiger, I would definitely create a permanent backup of all your fonts in Mac format, such as on a CD, and put it in a safe place.
which folder should I dump them in? My little house/Library/font? Or some other folder?
If there are multiple users of each Mac, then put them in the main /Library/Fonts/ folder. Then any user of that Mac can use the fonts. If you were to put them in the Fonts folder of you user account, then only you would be able to use them (or anyone else logged into your account). The downside to either of these locations is that they are on all the time, by default.
Since you're using Suitcase, you can put them wherever you want and activate them as necessary. You can even leave them in the /Library/Fonts/ folder since you still deactivate any fonts you want within that folder from Suitcase's interface.

  • Files (fonts) appear as Unix files when viewing on an SMB share

We have a UNIX server running Linux which our Mac users are connecting via SMB.  We moved our company fonts to this server from an OSX Server.  All of our machines are running 10.6.6 or later.  Very intermittantly without any rhyne or reason some users when they mount the Font share, the Fonts show up as Unix files rather than the Fonts.  On my machine (10.7) they all appear normally.  Now I know that SMB was revamped in Lion so this may be the reason I can see them no problem.  But the 10.6 machines, any suggestions on fixing this?

Any solution on this issue? I have nearly the same exact issue in my environment, but is reversed.
The problem we have is when saving files to the server from the Snow Leopard machine, the older Tiger machines see the fonts as unix executable files. The snow leopard machine sees the files fine and can open everything with no problem.
This only happens when saving to a SMB server, as I can save the files from Snow Leopard to a flash drive and open on Tiger with no problems. Additionaly files saved from Tiger to the server are perfectly fine when accessing from Tiger or Snow Leopard.
We're running Windows 2008 Server and connecting via the macs using the SMB method. Also duplicated the issue on a Windows 2003 Server.

  • Appleworks 5 files won't work with Pages, appearing as UNIX files

I realize Pages will not open Appleworks 5 files. However, for some reason, when I copied my Appleworks 5 files onto a hard drive and put them on my PPC G4 iBook running OS 10.4, the icons for the files are appearing as unix executable files. I had no problem opening 5 files with 6 and did so every time I opened one. I would save them as version 6 (to upgrade the file) as suggested. But, the files that were copied from my old G3 to the G4 using the hard drive to move them, are now unable to open on the G4 using even Appleworks 6.
I had planned to open them in 6, convert them to 6, then open them in Pages.
This is why people hate Microsoft and Apple is doing the same nonsense. It's bad enough to buy a brand new imac that doesn't have a Superdrive. Why put an SD card reader on the ports while leaving off useful things like the drive, or minimally a Firewire 400 or 800 port. That aside, I had no idea their own proprietary software (Pages) would be designed to not work with Appleworks 5. This is why someone can get away with refusing to use Microsoft Office, or should be the reason.
Why are these files showing up as Unix files and cannot be opened even with Appleworks 6???
    Any advice?

Unix assumes any file without an extension is an executable file. the Classic (pre OS X) Mac OS did not use extensions/suffixes, but depended on internal Creator and Type codes to identify the application associated with a particular file. Unix (including OS X) does not recognize these codes, and requires an extension.
For AppleWorks, the extension is .cwk.
Add that extension to your AW5 filenames and they should open in AW6.
As for the dropping of the Superdrive, this seems to be just the most recent step in pushing the Mac into the present. The first second was dropping the 3 1/2" floppy drive from the original iMac. Prior to that, the first Mac had a 3 1/2 inch floppy, but not the 5 1/4 inch version used earlier on the Apple ][ series. Have you had need to use a floppy recently?

  • I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2. My problem is I can't search on an external network server for a file with the finder toolbar anymore. Nothing shows up and it will not search. I was able to in snow-leopard and am no longer able to w. Lion. Suggestions?

I am running Mac OSx Lion 10.7.2.
My issue is that I am not able to run a search in the finder toolabar on a network server. No files show up nor does it search on the server anymore. I was able to run the search in snow-leopard and am no longer able to do so with Lion. Is there a preference I can change or some kind of app or program I can download that will help me with this issue? This is extremely problematic for me as I am searching for files all day everyday. Thank you!

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • QuickTime 10.1 does not seem to be compatible with OSX Lion  - clicking on the displayed file window switches to another displayed app, doesn't play or control the video.

If I open a movie file (appears to be any type - .mov, m4v, mv4) it displays on the desktop, but when clicked, the Mac reverts to another open application (immediately UNDER to point of the mouse click) and not the displayed movie file.  It appears the screen mapping is flawed...
Anyone else have this problem? (does not appear to be a problem with QT7)  Running OSX Lion 10.7.3 and QT Player 10.1 (501.8) - all most current as far as I can tell...

Yes, same problem. The active clickable area appears to be shifted down and to the right as if it is the shadow mask (to make it look like layers in the display) that is responding. Means you can't move the control palette to the top of the window (to not block security video with time track at bottom) or even close the window. The X in the bubble appears when moused over but the click goes through it.
Most obvious if you open more than one movie at a time and they cascade. You can't get at the ones underneath until a few down the stack and it gets an upper wrong one.
      Who's testing these things?
For comparison testing to recreate problem: Mac Pro (System Information has also been dumbed down from System Profiler, push System Report for the useful stuff) with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 driving two displays.
Also viewing desktop of another computer on the network is slower and, for instance in World of Warcraft, the hand pointer flickers.
And finder windows can't be narrowed as much any more to show only a list of file names for drag and drop sorting.
Was hoping that by 10.7.3, it would be safe to jump, since several posts told me how to Terminal > networksetup -setv6off Ethernet to fix iTunes streaming to expresses and other dumb bugs.

  • Safari showing text as boxes with A in them after upgrade to OSX lion

    Hi,
After upgrading to OSX Lion and the new Safari that comes with it 6.0. It is showing a lot of the charachters on some websites as a box with a capital A in them. These are then pastered all over the site.
If i go to other browsers it is fine. Also when i copy and paste these A boxes it to the search bar it shows the correct text. But when viewing the page it is impossible to view the text and makes for an unpleasant browsing experience.
Any idea how to fix this issue? Is it a font issue? I have not changed any of my fonts and I would assume that the browser would be using a standard web font.
Any help on solving this riddle would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. Does any one know how I can get it to recover?

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says
    apple.com/support
          -6002F
Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? Thanks

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

  • Fonts changed to Unix files when saved to a remote server

Hi all, I read an archived thread regarding this, but not sure if my situation is related somehow. The issues others have had was that their font files were converted to Unix files at 0KB, when stuffed.
My issue is I backed up fonts (PS and TT) from my Mac to a remote server (PC based). When that server is accessed by Mac users, some saw the file as a Unix file at 0KB. However, there were some (including myself) that saw the actual font file.
That was a few months ago, we've retired that server since, but before doing so I transferred all the fonts to a new server. It's now a raid drive run off a Mac Xserve. After the transfer, I checked to see if the fonts were still okay, and they were showing full Mac file (no Unix). I didn't go into the new server for a couple of months, but when I did I noticed that all the fonts had been changed to Unix files. Some were at 8KB, others at 60KB. But no 0KB files. +Note: because the initial transfers was a success, the original files from the old server were deleted along with it. So there is no way of retrieving the original files. As well, were were running 10.4.10 with the original server and files. Switched to 10.5.x when files were transferred to the new server.+
I've tried the tips here (using the Terminal method and the FileUtilsCM script) http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6041364 but to no avail. I'd hate to think these fonts are scrap. As they were all purchased (and there's a whole load of them). Any input in saving these files would be of great help.
    Thanks in advance.

The real font information is stored in a resource fork, not the data fork fo the file.  Depending type type of file system you copied them to, how you copied them, and what method you are using to look at them, you may not be seeing the resource fork.
You can see more detail about files usng a Terminal command such as
    ls -leaO@ file
If there is a resource fork, it will be displayed.
If the file system was not a Mac OS X external file system, then you might want to look for a file with a similar name only starting with a leading period to make it invisible to the Finder
    ls -leaO@ /the/directory/with/your/fonts

  • System files on OSX Lion / Changing the bakround of Log-on screen

I found a guide to how to change the incredibly boring bakround in the log-on screen on OSX Lion, which was described really easy. And since its such a boring bakround and since i like to customize my stuff, was just about to go through the few basic steps to change it.
When i directly ran in to a problem.
In order to change the bakround, i need to find this location "/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources" and then the file "NSTexturedFullScreenBackgroundColor.png".
But, If i search in finder, it shows no results at all if i search for the filename, and no results shown when i search for any of the folders names...
    Why??
I have done no changes since i bought my macbook pro 13.3", with OSX Lion on it a few weeks ago. I am the admin and only user of the macbook.
It is set to Swedish as the main language, could that result in the system files having different names?
Otherwise other ways to change the log-on screen's bakround will be appreciated as well.
As long as the tip is not "Ravissant", wich i have already looked at, but that would only make the log-on screen even uglier.
I found the tips on this site: http://http://t3kd.com/blog/2011/07/27/how-to-change-os-x-lion-login-screen-back ground/?pid=313
Even though i'm not asking for help to understand this "how to", i'm just asking why my computer can't find thoose files.
    Help Appreciated /optifekk

That has never been a feature of Mac OS X, but I believe there was some kind of third-party software that could add that capability.  i don't recall what its name is, but you must have had that installed, and it either isn't installed anymore (perhaps removed as incompatible?) or is not working properly in Mountain Lion.

  • Osx lion get info reporting incorrect file size

    Hi all,
I am trying to troubleshoot a strange problem I am having with Adobe Revel. Adobe have been helping me to resolve it but my mac is displaying some odd behaviour which I need to explain and which may be affecting the adobe app.
The adobe app creates a library file of pictures and the file should be growing as I download more pictures. If I right click on the folder and "Get info" the folder size shown is smaller than I would expect at 25MB given that it should contain a good number of Jpeg files.
I have downloaded an app called "Grand Perspective" to help me manage disk space and for this particular file it reports a completely different (much Larger) file size than "Get Info" did (155 MB) which is much closer to what I would expect to find and it is growing as more pictures are downloaded.
Any idea what could cause "Get Info" to report the wrong file size.
I have another osx Lion mac with the same software loaded and although a completely different machine, it reports the same file size for this library folder as grand perspective does.
    Any help gratefully accepted.
    Slarti

I'm finding the same behaviour running Lion 10.7.2 and the file with the exact same problem as yours is a Sente (bibliography software) library containing references and pdfs.  'Get Info' reports it as 130KB but I know the file is much much larger than that! Even the Size reported on Get Info shows 874.4MB which is still too small.  If I 'Show Package Contents' on the file and 'Get Info' on the 'Contents' folder which it then shows, I get the correct size of 1.14GB
Apple Tech Support over the phone wasn't able to explain this behaviour.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Nokia C5-03 and Mac OSX Lion - Problems copying files to phone in Mass Storage mode

Whenever I try to load more than one file from my iMac (early 2008, OSX Lion 10.7.2) to my new Nokia C5-03 in Mass Storage mode —since the files are MP3s and Multimedia Transfer doesn’t seem to work at all, I keep on getting asked which transfer mode I want to activate for several times, I always choose Mass Storage, and then the first file starts copying, but when it ends with the first one I have to wait for ±30s only to get asked the same again and again until the second file starts copying, and so on.
It’s driving me crazy, I’ve tried setting in the USB connectivity options not to ask me for the mode when I connect the phone, but it doesn’t work either. It still goes very slow and a lot of “USB Mass Storage transfer mode activated” messages appear.
I’ve tested it with a friend’s C5-03 and it’s still the same, but when connecting them to a Windows computer everything goes great and fast. Has somebody had this problem before? Is there a solution to this? I don’t know if this is the correct board to post this, sorry if it’s not.
    Thanks in advance.
PS: Sorry if there are any mistakes or my English sounds weird, i’m Spanish.

    Hi,
Can you try the suggestions below?
-Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (called Programs

Select Nokia Ovi Suite in the list of applications and click
    Change/Remove.
In the dialog that appears, choose Repair.
    - Click Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver and repair
-Try creating the connection between your phone and computer
totally from scratch. Start by disconnecting your phone. In
Nokia Ovi Suite, select Tools > Options > My devices. Select
your phone at the top of the window and click Remove this
    device.
Then, select Tools > Add new device, and follow the
    instructions to reconnect the phone.
If this doesn't solve the problem,
-Uninstall the following programs withAdd/Remove Programs in
Control Panel (called Programs and Features in Microsoft
    Windows 7):
    Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver
    Nokia Ovi Suite
