OSX Lion for icloud on olde mac

I have an older mac, that cannot take Mountain Lion, but since I never installed Lion, I cannot sych my desktop calendar with icloud.  Is there anyway that I can upgrade the software osx on my mac to be able to access icloud?

If you're in the US, it's been reported that if you call the Apple online store at 1-800-MY-APPLE, that they should have Lion available to sell from the legacy products list. This would be Lion on the USB memory stick for $69 (as I recall the price).

You cannot use Lion until you have upgraded to 10.6.8:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
You received a coupon you can use and redeem on the App Store to download Lion. There is no App Store in Leopard.

  • Trying to update laptop. Putting snow leopard on so I can then buy lion for icloud. after restarting the laptop keeps going on and off. is this normal. white screen too.

    Hi
I am trying to update my laptop to Lion for icloud. I am trying to put snow leopard on first but after putting in the disk and restarting my screen is white and it constantly sounds as if it is trying to start or close. Is this right? Thanks

So far so good (I asked because you've posted in the forum for PPC iMacs…).
So what SL disc are you using? The retail 10.6.3 disc (white with the snow leopard pic) or a grey disc borrowed from another Mac?

  • How can I retrieve and reinstall OSX Lion for Mac Mini

I inadvertently deleted my OSX 10 Lion operating system on my Mac Mini -- tried redownloading it but continually received an automated response saying something like ".... unable to download the software, try again later"   That is not an exact quote  but close.  I tried several times to download the software but always received the same message.  I did verify that WIFI was up and working properly on my separate laptop.   Would like help in rebuilding my Mac Mini Operating system.

If your Mini is the "Mac mini (Mid 2010)" you quoted in your question, that would make it a Macmini4,1.
These Minis shipped running some variant of OS X 10.6 and should have included OS on DVD.
You may find it difficult to get back to 10.8 if you didn't save a copy of the downloadable installer.
If you boot holding down the <Option> key, do you see a Recovery partition? If so, is it for 10.8?
    Inquiring minds want to know!

  • How do I install Mac OSX Lion client on the new Mac Mini Server?

If Apple would have had the quad-core processor option for the non-server Mac Mini, I would have just bought that, but I wanted the quad-core. I do not, however, need the server software. I found this article talking about how to disable the server functionality, but this article highlights how little that method actually does.
Ultimately, I just want to do a clean reinstall like I used to do prior to Lion. This process used to be so easy. Create a disk image of the desired operating system on USB, option boot, and you're done. Now it appears that Apple purposely impedes this process, as every time I boot from the USB I created with Mac OSX Lion client, I get a circle with a line through it. Is there any way around this restriction? Editing firmware, editing .plist files, etc?
Very disappointed that Apple is limiting what used to be such a simple process on Hardware and Software that I paid for but now can't get the functionality I want.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but what I don't think you can do what you're asking for.  Closest thing is going to be disabling the server components like it says in the article, but again, that doesn't do much.

  • Upgrading from OSX 10.4.9 to OSX 10.6.8 on old Mac Book Pro (2nd computer)

    Greetings
I was wondering what the steps and cautions are to upgrade from OSX 10.4.11 on an old Mac Book Pro (2nd computer for shared use in household for emails, etc.) 2.33 Inel Core 2 Duo to OSX 10.6.8 or highest that I can?

You will need to get a 10.6 Snow Leopard retail disk which I don't think are still available from Apple.
Google "buy mac 10.6 snow leopard" to get an idea of current pricing. You'll need updates to10.6.8  in order to upgrade to 10.7 (the early core duo MBPros can not do this) or possibly 10.8 but check the exclusion list to be sure.

  • TS1702 I upgraded software from Snow Leopard to OSX Lion. Now my Office Mac applications would not work

Quite seriously, though, if you wish to use MS Office to it's full potential and if you depend on it on a regular basis, then upgrading to Office 2011 is the only reccommended way to go. You can use the free Apps mentioned, learn to use iWorks (which I love, but others don't) or make your system a shambles and lose your easy to use interface by the other method. Deduct the cost of Parallels from MS Office and it becomes pretty cheap, if that is the only PPC program you wish to use, which is the norm as PPC is long gone from development.
MS Office 2011 is not expensive if it is one of your major work tools. Think of those who had to update their Adobe software!
    Anyhow Cheers
    Pete

  • I have leopard, do I need snow leopard and then Lion for iCloud?

I have just got an iPhone 4S.  It lets me have iCloud.  I like iCloud.  My Mac on the other hand does not like iCloud.  I have 10.5.8 (I believe to be leopard) do i need Snow leopard or can I jump to lion to  get my Mac to like iCloud?
    Thanks
    Jonathan

You can jumpt directly to Lion by purchasing the Apple USB Lion flash drive installer - $69.00 at your local Apple retailer. Otherwise, do as Carolyn has recommended - $29.00 for Snow Leopard and $30.00 for Lion. You save $10.00 doing it that way. If you choose to use that method then you may want to make your own USB installer:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • Do I need Lion for iCloud?

I have iTunes 10.5 and an iPhone with iOS5 but all my computers have 10.6.8.  I also have an email account from .Mac that I want to save.
Can I sign up for iCloud without Lion and can I use my email on all my machines that don't have Lion?
    Kevin

Your .mac address will merge in iCloud once you sign up in iCloud. If your devices are up to date with iCloud requirements, they will be fine.
Your computer with SL will not be able to use iCloud. You will have to use it throught the website iCloud.com. You can still use the email in SL, but you will have to configure the new settings as per Christopher's link. The mobile me account will be pushed to the iCloud servers. The downside is that your address book will not sync to the other devices in iCloud and you will not have use from the computer to the other iCloud features.
It is possible that Apple will upgrade SL in the future to accomodate iCloud. So if you don't want Lion, you may want to wait a while.

  • OSX Lion for Imac and macbook

Is it possible to install OSX Lion also on my macbook after installing it on my iMac? I bought a license and wonder if it's also possible to install it on my laptop as well...
    THNX!

Yes, you can pay for it once and legally install it on other Macs that are registered to you.
When you download it the installer is placed in your Applications folder - make a copy of it or copy it across to your other machine before running the installer because once you successfully run the installer it deletes itself. It'll save you having to download it again.
When you install it on the second machine you may be prompted to log-in to your Mac App Store account, but you won't have to pay a second time.

  • OSX Lion and ICloud? - I have a macbook model identifier 1,1

I have a macbook model identifier 1,1 accordingly even though I run SnowLeopard this won't apparently run OS Lion, iCloud is going to be free for Lion users and Mobile Me turned off where does that leave users like me?
I was looking at buying an IMac when Lion came out thinking I would also upgrade my MacBook, but this will now mean running two different types of operating software that may not necessarily talk to each other.
    Any ideas?
