OSX Lion: Mail Starts then Hangs

Ever since I downloaded Lion, I cannot get to Apple Mail.
The app tries to start, hangs forever until I close it.
Is this an effect of MobileMe?
Anyone else having that problem?

Ok, so things have improved.  I shut down my machine (a few times), each time ensuring I checked the message that windows weren't saved ...
I waited for spotlight index to do more of it's indexing.  Then I tried again, didn't work, so I forced quit mail.
Then I fixed disk permissions (in disk utility) and shut down the computer (I read this might be helpful for general issues on another thread).
Then went back in, started mail and it asked if I wanted to reopen the window (which I assumed meant from the previous session). I said no. Then tried again, this time after a wait, things progressed.  And mail has just loaded.  It took about 45-60 mins to migrate and clean up.
Spotlight indexing can be located in the top right corner of the screen - menu, if it's indexing it turns into a magnifying glass.  And if you click on it, it gives you more detail...
Good luck!

  • Migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server

    Hi all,
I'm looking to migrate from Exchange Server 2011 to Mac OSX Lion Mail Server.  I work for a company with roughly 30 employees and they use exchange for mail, contacts and calendars.  We want to take full advantage of OSX Server and to completly get off of exchange.
What are the best ways to do this?  Are there any tools available to help this process?

I agree with the points made by Strontium90. If you have any PCs then Apple's mail/contacts/calendar software is a poor choice. Kerio Connect as a mail/contacts/calendar server would not only support Macs but would also do a good job supporting PCs running Outlook.
If you are going to become a pure Apple site, then you could use just the Apple software and this would be cheaper than using Kerio. For 30 users this might be a suitable solution, however even in a pure Apple environment many people prefer Kerio. For example I find Kerio much more pleasent when dealing with email addresses across multiple domains, email aliases, email group addresses, and so on. Kerio also has built-in email archiving, that is keeping a record of all emails. Kerio also provides a web-browser client for accessing email, calendar and contacts. It is worth noting that as standard Mountain Lion Server no longer includes a webmail feature. While I personally find the Kerio webclient rather ugly it does work.
There are some annoyances I have with Kerio, firstly they have always charged a 'maintenance' fee for their software. This provided access to software updates, and in the past also provided access to Kerio technical support. Unfortunately they now only let you make two (2) support cases per year for that cost, and you now have to pay extra for any more cases. Also while they added support for EWS (Exchange Web Service) to allow using Outlook 2011 for Mac as a supported email client, they did a poor job of this so that it does not work properly with any other EWS compatible client. This means it will not work in EWS mode with Apple Mail, nor with Outlook for Windows. While there are other ways to connect these other clients, this seems a foolish move and there have been plenty of requests to fix this.
Apple's Mail client uses EWS to connect to a 'real' MS Exhange server.

  • OSX Lion Mail Server Junk Mail Filter blocks incoming mail from any Yahoo address

I have yet to be able to use OSX Lion Mail Server's Junk Mail Filter.  I have several contacts who use (free) Yahoo Mail addresses.  Whenever I turn on Junk Mail Filter, even at the Most Cautious setting, any incoming mail from Yahoo.com addresses do not make it into my inbox.  I was told last year by an Apple Enterprise Tech Support contact that "..we're still having problems with that Junk Mail Filter, sorry, just leave it off for now.."  WTH  In the meantime, the good news is I'm not missing any incoming e-mails; but, I'm having to sort through and delete a few hundred spam messages each day.
    Suggestions?  Thanks in advance

  • OSX Lion Mail and Exchange Server

My ITS person says that OSX Lion Mail "doesn't allow for exchange accounts so calendars etc don't work".
    Is this true?
    Thanks!

Again, both of you have been really helpful.  Thank you so much.
If you are both still on this thread, I would like to ask about solutions to a space problem:
My primary computer is a MacBook Pro (Lion 10.7.3), where I am running Entourage 2008 (13.1.2).  Because I have limited space on my MBP for housing old emails (under "On My Computer"), I created a server from an old Mac in my office.  Then, using Entourage 2008 from my MBP, I created an additional IMAP account on the old Mac server, with subfolders for "email_2005", "sent_email_2005", "email_2006", "sent_email_2006", etc.  This is where I archive all my old email.  The nice thing about setting it up this way is that I can search any or all of these folders anytime, and from any location, directly from my Entourage 2008 app on my MBP, yet they take up no space on my MBP.
First of all, I suspect there were easier ways to archive off emails from my MBP, but after searching and asking for weeks, this is what I settled on and it has served me well for years.
But now, my old Mac really is getting old and I'm worried it will die at some point.  Plus I'm not thrilled about trying to maintain the server software on this old Mac.
I also have space on a shared drive maintained by ITS, that's backed-up nightly.  This would be an ideal place to house archived mail folders.  Then I could take down the server on my old Mac and not worry about it anymore.  Unfortunately, I have not been able to set up an IMAP account on my shared drive space (I suspect it's against the ITS rules of this drive).
Entourage 2008 does not permit me to designate where "On My Computer" folders are housed (they have to be on the same computer running the Entourage 2008 app).  If I could designate the location of "On My Computer" folders, a simple solution would have been to just locate them on the shared drive and I wouldn't have to bother with creating additional IMAP accounts housed elsewhere.
    Questions:
    1) Does Outlook 2011 or Lion Mail permit designating the location of local files (off my primary MBP) for archiving emails?
    2) Is there a simpler solution to archiving emails off my laptop, but that would also allow them to be conveniently searchable from within a mail app on my laptop?
    Sorry for the long-winded questions.
    Thank you again.

  • OSX Lion, mail updating/migrating issue (hangs)

    Hi all,
I upgraded to Lion yesterday, and one glaring issue for me to date is that Mail has a upgrading/migrating message pop up when I open it, but even though it was left running over night, it's not completing.  I tried a few times this morning too, to no avail.
The only other thing which is running is spotlight index (9 hours remaining).  I'm doubt this is related but I thought I would mention it.
Mail is a pretty crucial part of my life as I have several inboxes coming into it.  Does anyone have any insight into this issue, or potential resolutions?
    Would appreciate any input.
Otherwise the only option I can think of is a clean install of Leopard>Snow leopard>Lion, and then migrating over from timemachine backup, which I assume is possible.
    Cheers!

Ok, so things have improved.  I shut down my machine (a few times), each time ensuring I checked the message that windows weren't saved ...

  • OSX Lion Mail - email account appending previous user's mail in "mailto:" section

So here is the issue I'm runing into.
I recently bought a MBA for my gf and she likes it.  I decided to set up everything in the beginning and download critical updates and this made me use my AppleID to sign in.  I was trying to make sure that the Macbook mail app was working  fine, so I used my gmail account to test it out.
Prior to handing the macbook air to her, I made sure I took out all my account information from the Mail settings.
Months later I started receiving reply emails that was intended to go to her.
Upon checking the mail receipt, it seems like my gmail account got appended to her "mailto:" part of the mail.  Obviously when her contacts reply to her, it would use the email in the mailto: part the email arrives at my inbox, not hers.
I thought this was just a one time occurence, but now its happening all the time and we're getting annoyed.
We checked through all possible settings and sub settings in the Mail application and found 0 trace of my gmail account.
So here is the list of my questions:
    How do I fix this?
If there is no fix, is it possible to reset the mail application back to its initial configuration?
I'm trying to find ways to fix this without formating the whole box.
The mail app is the native OSX Lion app, fyi.
    Thanks in advance!

Check the setting (See red arrows) in this pane of Mail's Preferences.
Make sure the right account is shown.
You can see my setting here. You may want have hers more specific.

  • Why won't firefox open? It starts then hangs around 7300k

I try to start firefox it doesn't. I check the task mgr and it show the process as open but usually stuck at around 7,300k or 1,800k. It will not start in safe mode or with extension off command either. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, run McGlary and SPybot but nothing has changed. It still wont start. About a week ago i ran McGlary and then firefox actaully started, once! But has since gone back to not starting.

  • Lion Mail Problem. Hangs on startup

Upgraded from SN to Lion.  All works fine except Mail.  The program tried to open a non-active IMAP account 33 times and hung.  Now opening the program, I've set all account to offline, but still get the wheel and cannot reindex, or perform any mail functions except to quit.  I've removed all the accounts from advanced setup.
Any way I can delete the mail catalog and start over with adding accounts, etc?

    Try the following:
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be re-entered automatically and/or if you created an email account as part of the computer setup assistant when first turning on the computer after purchase.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailbox files at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
Test if this resolves the problem.

  • How do you remove duplicates in OSX Lion Mail?

I know there are a few posts floating around about removing duplicate emails with Mail Scripts, however this software isn't supported in Lion just yet. And I would like to do this now. What's the smartest way to remove duplicates across multiple IMAP folders on 1 account. I don't need something so elaborate that does cross accounts etc.
I've downloaded and installed MailSteward but it seems to only allow modifying a backed up copy. I need to remove live duplicates.
Anyone have any suggestions? Come on Apple, as if you guys don't get duplicate emails that this can't be programmed into the software...
    I'd sincerely appreciate anyone's help.
    Kindest,

  • Mountain lion download started then disappeared

I was downloading mountain lion from the app store on the Mountain Lion up to date program code file.
The down load started, I walked away, I believe the iMac went to screen saver and the DL disappeared.
There was no trace of it in the user download folder ?

Look in your Applications folder for "Install OS X Mountain Lion". If it's there just double-click to install. If not restart your Mac and the download should continue from where it left off.

  • OSX Lion Mail problem

I use 2 locations for work and home. Each has a different ISP. At the home address I can send / receive mail with no problem. At work I can only receive mails but only rarely send. Any ideas how I can send from both locations?
At the work location, the mac.com email seems not to connect, but I can still recieve to my private email address which is from another provider.
Any help to solve this will be greatly appreciated!!!
    Thank you

  • OSX Lion Mail.app bug in signatures containing a URL

This is highly reproducable: try adding an image followed by text in a signature in Mail.app. Now select the image and add a url (CMD+K) e.g. to your company website. So far this should look the way you expect. Now click on some other preference, so Mail saves the signature. I have multiple signatures, so I just click any other signature. Click back on the signature you have just created, and notice how all text that came after the image now is underlined.
    Why?
There's a bug in the way Mail saves the webarchive file for the signature (~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Signatures/<blabla>.webarchive. When you open this file, you will find a bunch of binary bla, followed by invalid (see missing quotes in attributes below) HTML, that will contain your image similar to this:
    <a href="http://www.mywebsite.com/">
    <SPAN class="Apple-string-attachment"><OBJECT height=53 width=157 type=application/x-apple-msg-attachment data="cid:[email protected]"></OBJECT></SPAN>
Don't ask me why Mail capitalizes just these tags and not any other tags, but the most important bit is that Mail forgets to add the closing tag </a>, so now everything trailing the image is linked too.
I cannot reproduce this in Safari, so apparently Mail and Safari do not share code here. I have tried what happens when copy/paste a valid rendered HTML file with the appropriate signature text from Safari into Mail, but the result is the same.

also via applescript same beahviour, composing a message and including an attachment after setting the signature make underlined all the text after the first email adress inside the signature.

  • Location of OSX Lion Mail Server sent mail

I had to restore a mac mini server I use for web and mail hosting. Since the restore was due to a software problem, I had to do from scratch instead of recovering from a disk clone. I copied from the old mini backup all the mail accounts directories under /Library/Server/Mail/Data/..., and I've got back all received mail for every account, but NOT the sent mail. I guess sent mail is stored in a different location, but can't figure out where.
Does anyone know what I have to copy to restore also sent mail?

Ok, I found my error. The sent messages folder is into the same directory of the inbox, under /Library/Server/Mail/Data/..., but it's hidden (.Sent Messages).
My stupid mistake was to copy the content of the folder in the new created folder without checking the presence of hidden folders.
I'll leave this here for anyone else will do my same mistake
