OSX Lion ram usage

Well, i've got my 13' Macbook Air today (4gb ram), and love it.
The only thing that bothers me is the extremely high ram usage of Lion, when i turn the Macbook on it jumps to about 1.3gb ram usage which i find really much considering my PC running Windows 7 uses less.
After some casual usage it even jumps up to about 2 gb ram usage.
Is this normal? how are the other Air's with only 2gb of ram handling this? there can't be much left there, besides just running the operating system.
i am new to Mac's so am i doing something wrong?

Hi all,
After last Lion update a i seem to encounter a very strange situation regarding ram usage.
I have an early 13' mbp core i5 with 8gb of ram.
After upgrading to lion 10.7.1 i have less than 500mb available after just a few hours since i turn it on.
I must mention that the only running apps are: safari, mail, app store, ichat, ms excell and itunes.
Upon quitting excell, itunes, appstore and restarting mail and safari i still only get 1,5gb of free ram.
My suspicion is that there is another ram leak somewhere, or else i can't explain why my computer user 128mb of swap with 8gb of ram installed.

  • High memory usage OSX Lion on iMac

    Hi,
Recently upgraded 2006 iMac 6.1 to OSX 10.7.2 (4GB). Noticed performance dropped significantly when 2 or more users are logged in especially when switching users. Observed memory usage for OSX Lion is far higher than Snow Leopard! By startup 2GB real memory already allocated and often down to last 500MB. Performance appear to slow down due to swapping as swap i/o appears to increase.
On snow leopard I had 6 users logged in and 4GB was plenty. Lion appears to be a MS product!!!!
Anyone else experienced high memory usage on Lion and any ideas how to reduce memory consumption?
Unfortunately at the maximum memory capacity for my my iMac so need to find ways to reduce memory usage. There must be a kernel compiler option that could reduce memory.....
Also considering SSD drive to speed up swap i/o read/writes.
Otherwise will have to go back to leopard :-(
Thanks for any help in advance.
    -Dav
PS> OSX Lion is alot more stable than previous OSX releases with this iMac model. Especially iMacs suffering the notorious NVDIDIA GPU heat problems...

You mac can handle up to 3gb of ram, but slightly more will be available with 4gb installed.  For Lion to run smooth, a true 4gb of ram is preferred, which may explain the sluggishness of your mac.

  • Techtool deluxe on osx lion does not run video ram test

I ran Techtool Deluxe after having installed OS X Lion. When it gets to the Video Ram test it quits. If I disable this test all is fine. What's wrong with testing video ram on OSX Lion?
    Thanks.
    G

Same problem. I've been having a lot of weird issues ever since Lion. Safari has crashed about ten times in the last two days and my mac keeps logging off all by its self. It seems that Techtool Deluxe and Lion don't go well together...when it starts it says that it hasn't been tested with Lion, and they no longer include it with AppleCare, so it seems that apple has discontinued the application. I'd say that from here on out, Techtool Deluxe will simply be a memory of the past...so probably just don't use it anymore.

  • Firefox 4.0 RAM usage soars over time in Mac OSX 10.6.7 and is never freed

Firefox 4.0 RAM usage typically averages between 400-750MB for light usage (1-2 windows, 1-3 tabs each). Memory usage skyrockets over time, and/or if I open more tabs or windows where I've seen it consume well over 1 GB of RAM of my total 4 GB. Firefox 4.0 never seems to free much of this RAM relative to what it's consuming either.
The only plugins enabled are QuickTime, Flash and Java (and disabling any of these to use Firefox efficiently should not be required).
The worst I've ever seen was it using 1.27 GB of RAM when all I had open was Facebook (1 window, 0 tabs). Something is not right with this browser...Shouldn't it free what it isn't using?

Same here. I upgraded to FF5 yesterday morning and by this morning FF was using 1.26GB RAM and over 1GB Virtual Memory (less than 24 hours). I've had this problem ever since I started using FF with version 3...
The only add-on I use is Firebug.

  • Macbook pro running annoyingly slow on OSX Lion

    hi,
i'm having a bit of trouble running osx Lion, ever since i've installed my macbook pro (2.8 Ghz Core i7 with 8 Gb of ram) has started stuttering. running absolutly nothing but one single application (being lightroom, quicktime, itunes or any other app) every few seconds my mac tends to stop for up to a minute to do ...something... it shows the beachball icon and the resumes normal duty just to continue on it's annoying course several seconds later.
i have tried resseting my SMC, i have reinstalled lion with a complete clean install (with and without installing snow leopard bfore installing) and manually replacing all backups from time machine instead of restoring. a reboot doesnt seem to do anything except for take several minutes more than i'm used to.
i have tried booting in safe mode using the shift key.
so. looking at my activity monitor, the cpu usage doesn't seem to jump up at all when a "stutter" occurs. i have however noticed a VM size of near 200 GB after reboot (windows are not reopened on boot) wich seems ...excessive
so i'm at a loss.. lion has some pretty nice features, but at this rate i will be reinstalling my previous version of OSX.
is there anyone that might be able to help me out here?
    thanks in advance,
    sincerly
    Paul Thijssen

    Hi,
I also have this problem. My MacBook pro was brand new in august, but i bought it just a few days before the release of lion so i installed lion after i bought it. Only used it 1 day with whatever was on it before and seemed to work fine.
Ive been too busy to do anything about it but im very annoyed by how slow it is so i have to do something now, what can I do? can someone help with some specific steps? someone posted something about changing the network settings but I wasnt sure if that applied in europe (spain)... any guideance in non-technical terms please?

  • Mid 2009 MBP OSX Lion Unresponsive/Locking/Freezing

I wonder if anyone able to shed any light on the issues that I have begun to experience with my MBP?
I am having an issue where my MBP has started to freeze on a daily basis, this has been happening for approx 1 week.
If I’m using the MBP at the time of the freeze it will keep the screen on, but freezes the content and the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, the only way to move things along are by holding the power button for 10 seconds and rebooting.
    My current spec is:
Mid 2009 MBP 15" 250gb, 2.53 intel dual core, 8gb Ram (upgraded in August last year) running OSX Lion 10.7.3.
2 weeks ago I purchased a Benq RL2240H monitor with a 1080 resolution, I have an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse connected via Bluetooth, however, the freezing takes place whether the peripherals are connected or not.
Another scenario is when the screensaver kicks in.  The standard colour cycle saver is all I tend to use, but will freeze the MBP whilst the screensaver is running.
The final scenario that the freezing takes place is when the MBP has been put to sleep for anything over 2 hours. Once this takes place it is pot luck if it will wake or not, the MBP is totally unresponsive but displays the white light on the front when closed and turns off when opened.
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, but the problem has persisted and I have verified / repaired the disk via Disk Utility.
I’m now considering a total reinstall of Lion as the next phase of my home remedy, does anyone think this may help, or should I just take it straight to a Genius appointment?

For information to anyone who views this posting.  I have now reverted my MBP back to the original Ram setting of 4GB with the RAM that was installed when I purchased the MBP.
The freezing/locking issue has since stopped (touch wood) and all seems well so far.

  • Cannot properly install windows 7 on OSX Lion

i went through the whole process of making sure i have a working windows 7 disk, went through bootcamp.
restarted my early 2011 mbp w/ osx lion. it goes tot he black screen with flashing cursor for a few seconds, then goes to the "Press any key to install windows from CD/DVD...." so i did, went through the process of formatting the drive to NTFS, installed windows properly.
it restarted the first time, and continued installation. started to prepare desktop, then restarted again, and now it goes straight to the "install windows from CD/DVD" screen again, with no way to boot into windows.
Im on the early 2011 Macbook Pro (2.2ghz i7, 15inch, 4gb ram, radeao 6750 or whatever it is..).
this is really frustrating me, as i cannot think of anything that will help.
    please, all assistance is helpful.
    thank you,
    brian.

just a side note; i tried booting "my boot camp" in parallels and it was succesful. any ideas why it would work there but not on actua booting? also, if i install drivers through parallels will that stay in the actual install, also would it make a difference?

  • Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. Does any one know how I can get it to recover?

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says
    apple.com/support
          -6002F
Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? Thanks

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

  • OSX Lion 10.7.3 and Airport Utility 6 Installation Errors

I tried to run a Software Update and install the latest upgrades but the installation fails for both Airport Utility 6 and OSX Lion 10.7.3 updates. Each time, the update is downloaded succesfully then after the installer runs for a while an error pops up on the screen saying something like "Error: A number of files could not be installed" and all you can do is "ok" it. Nothing gets installed. When downloading JUST Airport Utility 6 from the Apple website to attempt a manual install, I get the following error:
I've tried running Fix Disk Permissions on the drive, and even Rpair Disk, but found no errors of any kind on the disk. My disk has over 300GB of available space. The Mac is a 2011 MacBook Pro 2.3Ghz with 4G RAM, currently running 10.7.2.
I've never had ewrrors with an Apple Software Update before, so this is very strange...
Apple, can you please help, or let us know if there will be a fix forthcoming?

Examination of the system log shows the following error exactly when the update fails:
xpchelper[1030]: could not open dyld map file: (null)
Installer[1166]: The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

  • 2010 Mac Mini and OSX Lion

    Hi Everyone,
Hoping I can get some advice.
I have a 2010 Mac Mini and am thinking about upgrading to OSX Lion.
Although I know my Mac meets the system requirments (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM), I was wondering what the performace is like on with these specs.
I mainly use my Mac for iTunes, Safari, Twitter and iPhoto if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

It works ok for me, I've got a 2010 mini (base model) and am using it as a server for web, iTunes and VPN. It handles lion fine, the only quibble is that being always on it heats up during the day a lot, more so than when I had Snow leopard installed. It's not to unacceptable levels though. But as dingy and beezelbubba say, Ram is cheap nowadays and if you've got the spare cash it's always worth it.

  • My imac slow to startup running osx lion

I've recently upgraded to OSX Lion and now it takes at least 4 minutes for my system to load. It recognises the trackpad and keyboard but it won't allow me to scroll, move or select anything on the screen even though both Bluetooth devices are discoverable and working.
When it does load it works perfectly.
I've tried to reinstall lion (that didn't work - error message) and the usual help instructions. but when i try and reboot and use the Command R it does nothing!
I can't even revert to the previous OSX
    please help!!

Log details: sorry its long...couldn't see many duplicate messages...hope you can help

  • Help Center is running extremely slow in OSX Lion.

Help Center is running extremely slow on my MacBook Pro with OSX Lion (8 GB RAM, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core i5).
It takes several seconds to start up, occasionally variable names like "[currentBookname]" are displayed instead of section headings, results update extremely slowly. This has always been an issue but keeps getting worse it seems.

  • Quicktime Plugin Issue in Safari on Mac OSX Lion.

(Strange) Safari - Quicktime - issue on Mac OSX Lion (All Updates done - 20/11/2011)
Strange issue with Safari - Quicktime video playing - on Mac OSX Lion (All updates done till 20th Nov 2011 night)
Problem discovery: Tried to view the Apple iPhone 4S Keynote on Apple Website. Strange that Safari does not display any videos from Apple Website.
Following works OK:- You Tube worked fine.
    - Google Chrome worked fine. (It shows the quick time player loading and then displays the video absolutely fine.)
Conclusion: There is some problem with Safari Quicktime Plug-in.
    Strange Discovery:
    - There are two users on the MAC. Logged in with a general user (Non Admin)
    - When tried to view Apple Videos on Safary ... THEY WORKED FINE !!!
    - The user where they donot work is an ADMIN User ... Strange !!!
    System:
    - Mac-Mini 2010 - 8 GB RAM - with OSX Lion fully software updated until 20th Nov 2011 night.
    - DIVX is installed and is also a paid version - registered with DIVX website.
    - VLC is installed.
    - Perian was installed - after problem discovery - uninstalled it - no use.
Please help with a solution if anyone has faced and solved this problem. Sub question is : If DIVX / anyother plug-in causes problems with QuickTime plugin on Safari, why does it affect only one user on the system and not other users on that system ?
    Notes:
    1) There is a similar looking thread on MacRumors here but concluded that required to start a seperate one with clear problem statement.
    2) Apple Forums
    (a) One thread on topic that hints that some 3IVX plug-in can cause issues with Safari Quicktime Plugin: here
    (b) Another thread from Apple Forum, that hints that DIVX causes problems to Safari Quicktime Plug in, Link is Here

Refer to a thread on Apple Discussions Forum itself, Link is HERE; refer to the posting by "Charles Cole",

Re: Does anyone recommend OS X Lion?
Aug 2, 2011 8:09 PM (in response to Landrix)
Charles writes about DIVX and QuickTime Plugin conflict in Safari:
One thing I've discovered that might help anyone having a Quicktime Plug-in issue. If you have DivX as a codec on your system (usually installed to play .avi files) you'll want to uninstall it so that Sarfari 5.1 will default to the Quicktime Plug-In and not the DivX plug-in. Otherwise, you can't see Quicktime movies in Safari.
Note: this post is about and at the time of OSX Lions launch, i.e. 10.7.0.
Now we have 10.7.2, still cannot believe Apple has not fixed this bug !!!

Hi i have a macbook pro that came with osx lion and would like to uprgade my white macbook 2008 to osx lion 10.7 But i upgraded my macbook pro to 10.8 and i don't have osx lion on a cd or flash drive where can i purchase osx lion

Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • OSX Lion bugs!

I just loaded OSX Lion and now my computer is slowly failing... MAC mail worked at first but has now crashed, Parallels wont run I need to purchase version 6... I should have listened to the bloggers! More of MY time and money... I miss my Leopard!

First off, neither Parallels, nor Lion will run on an iMac PPC.  It would be helpful to know what iMac you have.  Click on Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More info and find out your RAM, and your Machine ID.  According to:
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table/tags/_p/index_tags/_p you need version 6.0.12094 of Parallels to run Lion Smoothly.
Check the same website for all your other applications to ensure you have versions known to run smoothly on Lion.
