OSX Lion Thumb Drive will not boot

The thumb drive you sent containing the upgrade is not recognized by either my Mac Mini or MacBook Pro. Please advise

  • External Firewire Drive Will Not Boot with 10.5.1

I have a Intel Mac Mini and I tried to install Leopard onto a external Firewire Drive. I have done this with 10.4.11 and all works well. The Mac Mini is running 10.5.1 on it's internal drive. I attached the Ext FW drive 320 GB and formatted it using 'Disk Utility' GUID format. I next installed 10.5.0 on the Ext FW Drive. I can shutdown and reboot with 10.5.0 using the firewire drive as the booting drive. I next installed the 10.5.1 update and when it completes it requests a restart, I restart it and it never boots back up just the Grey-Apple screen.
I have left it sit for a long time in this 'trying-to-boot' mode for a longtime because I know 10.5.1 may restart more than once on initial install. but nothing. I have also tried partitioning the drive into 3 40-80-180GB drives, but still the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Went through the motions on that. No positive results. I'm starting to suspect either the enclosure or one of the latest updates.
This what I have found to date.
The Enclosure " Vantec NexStar 3" extrenal USB 2.0 and Firewire. Model NST-360UF-BK
The Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB IDE Drive
I tried 10.5.0 on an Intel Mac Mini. (GUID format) It boots ok. Install 10.5.1 manually downloaded or automatic it will install the update but will no reboot.
(this part I have to verify a second time) tried the same enclosure on a G4 . I attached the drive formatted it for a PowerPC install and boot. Installed 10.4.10 but not the latest security updates, JAVA, and QT. It will boot ok from the external FW drive. I next install the latest Updates via the update app in the Systems Preference window. After doing the updates for 10.4.10 it will not boot.
So I'm suspecting either the enclosure or the latest updates

  • Hard Drives will not boot or mount

I've been having problems with my hard drives (3) mounting over the last month or so. I had them on the SIIG Ultra 133/100 card. The drives would be on the desktop and working fine and then after a shut down or restart they would be gone. A pram reset seemed to get them back into service for awhile. Sometimes I would change the SIIG card to a different pci slot and that seemed to help. I asssumed that the SIIG card was going bad, so I replaced it. The new SIIG card will not mount any hard drives at all. I also attached one hard drive to the ultra ata on the mother board and it didn't mount. I've zapped the pram, reset the open firmware and replaced the battery. The computer will happily boot from any CD (9.1, 10.4, Disk warrior) but no hard drives are visible for repair or installation. All the hard drives were put into a firewire enclouser on my G5 and they boot fine so the drives are ok.
I have learned alot from these discussion forums over the last 10 years but I'm stumped on this one. Thanks in advance for any help. Steve

Do you know about setting an IDE hard drive to be a master or a slave drive? If you do, please forgive the lecture. But if you don't... When using more than one hard drive on a single IDE channel, one must be the master (In this case use the 9GB drive, since it's most likely the OEM drive) and the other must be the slave. You do this using some jumpers that are usually are on the "front" of the drive where all the power and cable connections are. (If they're not there, then the next likely place is on the circuit board of the drive.) There will usually be three or four jumper options: master, slave, cable select or single drive. The typical codes are: M for master, S for slave, C/S for cable select. The SIIG card might understand cable select, but the onboard controller doesn't, that's why you need to manually set it when you connect the drives to the onboad controller.
I doubt it's your power supply going on you since your machine still boots from the CDs.
Try a different IDE ribbon cable. If that doesn't work, check the voltage outputs on the power leads you connect to the hard drives. One black lead should be 12 volts DC, the other black is 5 volts DC.
If none of these ideas work, then I'd look at your logic board. But the more I think about it, the more I think it's your ribbon cable or the power cables.

  • Hard Drive will not boot...99.9% of the time

    Hello all,
I have a 2.0 Ghz MBP that is now about a year and a half old. It's been problem free since i got it, but last week I had my first encounter with the flashing question mark folder, so I started figuring out ways to fix. I put in my install disc for OSX and ran disk utility, but the hard drive wasn't recognized. I then ran the computer in TDM, but my G4 wouldn't recognize it. I tried resetting the PRAM to no avail. It seemed hopeless, but last night I held option during startup and my HD appeared instantly. I selected it, and my computer started up no problem. Having gotten in to my hard disk, I ran disk utility to verify the drive. I had to cancel the verification right after it started because I wanted to wait until i could plug it in to the power adapter. However, this only brought up a pinwheel for disk utility, and an eventual lockup. I tried a hard reboot, but ever since ive only gotten that flashing folder icon, and when I try booting to the startup disk menu, the screen is gray for about three minutes, then a cursor appears (no disks)
I remain hopeful for the fact that my hard drive is accessible, albeit with a good deal of luck. I suppose that means its not completely lost. Somebody, please help me with something i havent tried
    Cheers

If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility then your drive is shot and needs to be replaced. However, if the drive entry appears (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) then the drive may be OK, but your volume is shot. In this case repartition and reformat the drive.

  • T61 New hard drive will not boot, BIOS doesn't reckognize.....

Ok i need some major help here.  I recieved a new Seagate 500Gig internal hard drive for my lappy.  so i thought i would do a fresh install of windows vista, via the restore media that i created from the thinkvantage software on my laptop.
Now here is where the problem lies....Before I install it, format it or write any data to it, BIOS reads the new drive just fine.   As soon as i run the recovery software cds  i get a verry anoying error.
The following is the exact error message.
    "error 2100: HDD0 Initialization error (1)"
Has anyone else seen this and been able to install a new hardrive in this laptop?
Weird thing is this.  I put the old HD back in 100GIG and connect the new one, that BIOS won't read after data has been written to it, to an external USB case.
I load windows vista just fine off my old drive, plug in the now 500G external drive and windows reads the data that has been written to it from the restore CDs.
Can anyone help me out here.  I have spent the past 2 full days trying to figure this out.
    Thanks

Ok just as an update thus far. i still can't get it to read the hd after i install from the recovery discs...which is odd of course.
It does read the drive before i install anything to it though.
OK time to add something really really weird though, i an attempt to figure this out, i installed the 500G drive and put ubuntu on it just to see if the problem was w/ the HD  having a failure or not.
ubuntu installed just fine, and i am typing this off the installed ubuntu OS.
SO now i have to ask, is there a bug in the recovery cds that thinkvantage has us create?  is there a way to test that?
Does the t61 have a limitation w/ a 500GIG hard drive that will not let the recovery dvds work or install properly?

  • Thumb drive will not accept duplicate numbers altho pics are different from iPhoto. Can numbers/labels be changed?

iPhoto 11, vers. 9.2.3 - Photos downloaded from my camera have a set of numbers which are repeated with each download posing a problem when trying to place them on a CD or thumb drive as the duplicate numbers are not accepted. I have well 2500 photos and possibly dozens of duplicate numbers. I thought I could simply modify the name of each photo but that does not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

    Two simple solutions
1 - export to different desktop folders on the desktop and then drag those folders to the thumb drive - duplicate file names in different folders are fine (you can not have duplicates in the same folder)
2 - export to a desktop folder using the sequential file name option - Exporting From iPhoto - and drag that folder to the Thumb drive

  • New Hard drive will not boot

Today i installed a new 1Tb segate HD in my mid 2010 MBP.  After a long painful waiting game of backing up to time machine i swaped the harddrives, and reinstalled OSX Snow Leppard. After importing all my time machine data i attempted to log in.  I was dennied access on both accounts on the computer. I tried a restart and now my mbp is hanging in the blue screen.
FYI my time machine backup was created of mountin lion.

To move the files manually, erase the drive and install Snow Leopard as usual. Then, follow the Setup Assistant steps and, when you arrive to Desktop, open Finder, go to your external drive > Backups.backupdb > yourmac > Latest > Users > user and copy the files to your internal disk. For example, if you want to copy the data that is in Pictures folder, you would want to copy it to Pictures folder in your internal drive

  • Firewire Drive will not boot

I connect a FW HD and select it as my start up drive. It has recently been upgraded to Mac OS X Tiger from Panther. This problem started when panther was installed, but upgrading to tiger didn't resolve it. I can't boot from this drive like I used to. It is still useable as a HD, but I'd like to be able to boot from it.

When you last formatted the drive, and mounted it in the Finder, did you make sure that Get Info's Ignore Privileges was not checked?

  • Cloned Hard Drive Will Not Boot

Hi, I have an early 2008 IMac running 10.7.5 that I'm upgrading the hard drive on.  I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the original 320gb drive to a new
Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST1000DM003.  After successfully creating the clone, I was able to boot from the new drive via a USB enclosure.  I used the "command+option+R+P" meathod to select the new drive in the enclosure.  Next, I installed the new drive into the IMac, and verified that all cables were securely fastened.  Now when I turn on the IMac, I get the flashing grey folder with the question mark.  I'm unable to get any of the boot-up commands to work, for example: "command+option+R+P" or holding down "option."  I've even tried putting the old drive into the enclosure via USB and the new drive into the IMac with no luck.  I still can't access the screen that lets me select the startup disk.  The only thing that works is starting the IMac with the original Install CD.  With the Install CD, I can see the new drive with Disk Uitlity, but it won't let me select it for startup.
    Thanks for your help!
    Mark

Humm... WD would normally put one in with the screw kit, at least they used to.
I would contact Seagate Support first and explain what you are doing and what we think the problem might be.
The other thing that could be causing you grief, is how you set the Partition Mac Scheme? When you were setting up and formatting the New Drive, did you also change the Partition Map Scheme from MS-DOS to GUID Partition Table. The Intel iMac can only boot Internal Drives that are Partitioned GUID Partition Table and Formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Hard drive will not mount shows up in Disk Utility

I have an external drive with a bootable OS X 10.6.8. I was in a transition between building up a SSD swapped drive. The SSD is installed in the CPU box but I have my old installation running from an external.
I have several external hard drives. They are all Firewire. Some have USB 3.0 and or eSATA options but my MacMini only talks to Firewire and USB 2.0.
I understand that you daisy chain Firewire drives and turn them on and off in sequence as they fall from the CPU box/case.
Firewire is a power source. I run the external with the OS using an AC adapter but one Firewire drive is powered through Firewire.
I have had as many as 4 external drives running along with the internal drive without a glitch while I was reorganizing files.
Today I booted off the external drive. It was running fine. I turned on one Firewire drive (the one that runs on Firewire power). That drive stumbled. I recognized the sound when there is an interruption in power. This cause the external boot drive to stall. I had to force a reboot.
Now the external boot drive will not boot up. It does not mount but Disk Utility sees it. The drive itself is bright and clear in Disk Utility but the partition (single) is faded out. I can run Verify and repair in DU. DU says it doesn't see anything to repair. It will not mount on its own or when I click the Mount button in DU. It does not produce an icon on the Desktop (because it is not mounting).
I also have SpeedTools. But although it sees the drive I cannot do anything with it. None of its tools run more than a spli second before they fail.
This drive has USB 3.0 and I see everything through USB that I see through Firewire. Connecting the other way did not get around the problem.
Of course I will buy an AC adapter for every external drive and never run them using Firewire again but the horse is out of the barn.
I have the original installation disks and could run the Archive and Install option but it would require physically swapping drives with the internal. I'd like to avoid it if possible. It is a MacMini and tedious.
    Any suggestions?

I took the problematic hard drive and installed it in my Mac Mini so I could attempt a Safe Boot and then Archive and Install if necessary.
Safe Mode didn't work. The drive produced the circle with a slash symbol.
I reset the PRAM which was part of a list of steps to work through I found created by Apple Support.
I was able to boot up to Verbose Mode and view the text of the boot process. I wrote it all down. I can answer questions about the content better than typing it all out exactly. It includes, "...journal magic is bad..." "...failed to open..." and ends with "...cannot mount root, errno = 19"
I attempted Archive and Install however when it went to show what target drives were available it was a blank box and all buttons were grayed out.
I rebooted and opened Disk Utility from the DVD. The drive appeared the same with the top main line bright and the partitioned volume faded. Still was unable to mount. I ran Verify and this time a red line of text appeared "Invalid content in Journal" and at the end I ran Repair. When running I could read line by line and at one point it showed "checking volume information" then the following line "Repairing volume" the following line "Rechecking volume" more line of checking then it ended with "The volume was repaired successfully."
It still would not mount. I ran Verify again and again said "Invalid content in Journal" and this time it stopped midway saying "The volume was found corrupt and needs to be repaired. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
I clicked Repair and it ended with The vol. was repaired successfully."
Still unable to mount I began repeating Repair over and over. Each time it found something to repair and ended with a success message. After several more Repairs I tried Verify and it stopped midway saying to Repair the disk.
Question: Does running Repair multiple times continue to correct bits and pieces little by little or is this a generic message and we should treat it as a problem Disk Utility cannot pinpoint and is just beating its head against the wall?
The step by step instructions I downloaded mentioned running Repair more than once but it did not say that running it 20 times would erode some problems and eventually lead to a fully repaired disk (if the problem was something DU could take care of in the first place). At this point I have run Repair about 20 times total with a series of 10 back to back skipping Verify. I keep seeing the lines about invalid content in a journal and that it repaired something successfully. Yet I still cannot mount the disk.

  • External HD will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with Apple Partition Map and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A few drives don't support booting a Mac at all.
If you have a Western Digital model, here's a list showing which ones should, or should not, boot Macs: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1787

  • External Clone will not Boot PPC Mac

I have a ppc mac running OS 10.5.8 and an external hard drive, formatted  with APM and containing a clone of the ppc mac. Using the firewire interface, this external drive will not boot the computer. The external HD box is an OWC Mercury Elite Pro containing a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HD with 2 partitions, one partition containing the clone.

Does it only happen using FireWire? Have you checked if the external disk has got an Apple Partition Map? Note that it's required to start a PowerPC-based Mac.
To check that your external disk is using Apple Partition Map, connect the external drive, open Disk Utility and choose the external disk in the sidebar. Then, look at the bottom of the window and see what says next to "Partition Map Scheme"

  • IMac 27 inch i7 OSX Lion will not boot up from Hard Disc

iMac 27 inch i7 OSX Lion will not boot up from Hard Disc on cold start, and cannot find wifi hardware in the machine.   Restart and everything is fine.   I have two machine and they behave the same.   Software or hardware problem?

First of all, try a hard restart; making sure no disks are in the slot, unplug everything from your computer (keyboards, mice, etc.) and then unplug the computer itself. Leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back in and boot it up.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the option-key on your keyboard. The screen should show a choice of which disk drive to boot from. Choose your usual drive.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the shift-key on your keyboard. It should take a while for it to boot up, as it is destroying all connections to sources that may contain a virus.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down keys "option-command-P-R" until you hear the startup tone a second time.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the C-key. Make sure you have inserted the installation disk before doing this step.
If that fails, reboot it while holding down the command-key and the R-key.
If that fails, please reply to this and let me know.
