OSX ML & Mail 6.2 - Accounts Go Offline

Since upgrading to 10.8.2 & Mail 6.2, if my Mac Pro or MBP 'sleep', my accounts go off-line & the 'electric bolt' or 'lightning' icon appears beside my Mailbox Icons.
Going to the Mailbox Menu & clicking on 'Take All Accounts Online' has no effect (The 'Take All Accounts Offline' line is grayed out).
But Quitting & Re-opening Mail takes the Account back on-line - until the next time the computer goes to sleep.
No problem with my older MBP running Lion (10.6.8).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
...John

There are a lot of people having the same problem.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • When I wake my computer up from sleep all the Mail and Calendar accounts are offline?

Now that I have upgraded to Mountain Lion, when I wake my computer from sleep all of my Mail and Calender accounts are offline. This includes Gmail, AOL, and iCloud accounts. The connection doctor in Mail says that Mail can connect to the internet but puts red dots next to all of my accounts stating that connections to both the IMAP and SMTP servers could not be made. This issue has shown up only after upgrading to Mountain Lion, and the only way to resolve it seems to be to manually quit and relaunch Mail and Calender at which point everything goes back to normal until I sleep the computer again. Any ideas?

Further to my previous post... I think I may have stumbled uppon a solution.
Summary: When I fixed a problem with dictation, mail started working again.
Background: I noticed that after upgrading to 10.8.1 the dictation feature no longer worked. When I pressed [fn] twice the dictation bubble would appear, three dots in it would shake and then it beeped. No dictation. I searched for a solution, tried it out and dictation worked again. Then, this morning I opened up my Mac and mail sucessfully downloaded without having to restart mail.app!
Solution: This is a fix for dictation issues so don't blame me if it messes up your perfectly working dictation! However, it appears to have fixed my mail problems:
Locate and delete the file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist (Finder’s Go and press and hold Alt option). Then restart your Mac, turn off Dictation (Apple > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click Dictation) and reboot your Mac a second time and try again.
    The original thread is here.
So, a random "solution" with beneficial side effects! Let me know it works for you.

  • I have two mail accounts using mac mail. One account goes offline for no apparent reason.  Check mailbox menu all accounts online, password correct, etc.  but still can't get back

one account goes offline for no apparent reason.  I check Mailbox drop down menu for Take all accounts online, check correct password OK, turn mail off and on, reboot computer, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  Has happened in the past, but has also "fixed itself" after unknown time periods.  One account has not been working now for awhile.  I would like to get to the bottom of this.

    Hello,
Who is your eMail provider, the part after the @ sign?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

  • Can't send mail, says all accounts are offline...

I have been trying to send emails all day, and for some reason it is not doing it. It says that my accounts are offline, and when I run Connection Doctor, it won't fix anything at all! AHH!! I don't know what to do at all, I have 5 different accounts, and none of them work. My firewall is not the problem, and I don't know what to go from here.
It used to work, I installed Leopard last week, and everything was fine until now.

You need to provide more information. What kind of email (POP or IMAP)? What is your network configuration like? Can you access other online resources? Is your email available via the web, and if so, can you get to it now?

  • Massive frustration with Apple Mail and POP accounts going offline

I love Apple mail. Best interface ever.
BUT... because of issues with Apple Mail, I've been forced to use Entourage.
I really want to use Apple Mail and hope someone here can help me with this.
I have two Yahoo business mail POP accounts that I need to have running for an online business I have. I keep Mail running all day and my .Mac IMAP account and a Comcast POP account stay up all the time.
But the two Yahoo accounts keep going offline. I get an Apple Mail message asking me to reenter my password. They won't stay up more than five minutes or so.
Over the course of a day, this is so irritating that, as I said, I've had to switch to Entourage, where the accounts stay connected all the time and work just fine.
I've scoured the forums here. Deleted .plists, added IP addresses, followed any suggestion that seemed plausible/ But no luck.
If Entourage works, Apple Mail, it seems to me, also should.
    Can anyone help????

Speaking as one forced to use Entourage at work I can with confidence say in my case that they are different products serving different markets with different needs.
Apple did not drop the ball - the server is asking for re-authentication of a POP client. Any POP client should behave the same way. Yes, the client could just provide the credentials again, but it is safer to reequire the user to respond to the request.
That the request happens frequently is a function of the interrelationship between the DHCP lease life, client, and the mail host's response to new information.
Who is providing your DHCP lease?

  • Apple mail - account is offline - refuses to go online

I use apple mail to connect to multiple accounts.  One of them went offline on Friday and refuses to come back on.
The account is fully functional, because it's still working fine on iPhone, iPad and through Outlook 2011.
It's like once apple mail decides an account is offline, that's it.
    Is there a solution?

Regarding Mail:  When I return to my computer after it has gone to sleep, my accounts go offline, and are always asking me for the password.  THis is very annoying.  How can I prevent this?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • When I open Mail, all accounts are offline.  It takes time to get them back online.  This is an on-going problem that has been chronic and it has finally gotten me "inspired" to ask the Community

When I open Mail, all accounts appear offline.  I have to get back "online" before mail is delivered or sent.  Hassle.  Any Ideas??

I was having this same issue all week. I'm also using 10.8.5 It was driving me crazy. I think I found a solution. I downloaded and installed the latest security update from Apple in the App Store. I have not had a reoccurance since (?). Maybe that will help you as well.

  • Apple Mail account suddenly offline, smtp offline

    iMac 27" (late 2009) updated to Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Apple Mail 8.0 (1990.1) 17th October 2014.
Mail accounts in Apple Mail where working as years before until Yesterday, 3th November 2014. Suddenly 2 out of 3 accounts where offline showing the warning triangle icon on the right. Command "go online" and "syncronize" has no effect. Activity in Mail is showing no try to connect. Looking into the account config I see that the SMTP are "offline".
I checked everything and compared to the settings of the one account which is still normal working. Everything is identically set up. Only differences are the domain names, username and pwd. The domain names are on the same external virtual hosts and have same configs. The on the iMac faulty accounts are working on iPad and iPhone like ever and from the same internal network. My hardware firewall or the external mailserver can not be the reason.
I deleted 1) SMTP config, 2) whole mail account, 3) all corresponding keys in keychain and was setting up from new. No chance, they show SMTP offline and do not go online in IMAP. Next was trying to give account #1 the SMTP from the working #3. The SMTP #3 shows fine but near the inbox of account #1 i have again the warning triangle. No go online, no sync, no action in the activity window.
I go setting up Mail with these accounts in a new user. Mail was totally empty as I started config of two accounts. After doing all they where at the same point. No connection possible.
Why is this happend suddenly and after more than 2 weeks after Yosmite update? Why is one account working, two others not anymore?

Sorry, just found the details. Here we go:

  • My MacBook Pro can't send mail since Yosemite upgrade. I keep getting a message that the certificate is invalid, and it says that my account is "offline." This never happened before, very upset.

I upgraded to Yosemite yesterday afternoon on my MacBook Pro. It was an upgrade from the most recent Maverick version. I had already sent out several emails that day, but once the installation was complete, I couldn't send any mail at all. I kept getting this strange dialogue box that said the certificate for the server was invalid, and might be something "pretending" to be my server. It also keeps telling me that my email account is offline. The only account it shows as active is a Verizon POP account, but that doesn't work. I've tried using the Edit functions and the "doctor" functions, but they seem useless. I tried Help, but the instructions it gave included onscreen items I don't seem to have. This is awful, I've already missed deadlines and am desperate.

I have the same issue. My computer has also slowed down. I hope this isn't a malware. I haven't input my password into it, and dont know what I did to turn this on.
Hope someone else can give some insight

I updated my iMac and now my Mail does not work. It says all of my accounts are"offline". Safari is fine. How do I get my accounts back online?

    Hello there, Lynn.
The following Knowledge Base article explains and offers up some troubleshooting recommendations for issues with email acounts showing offline on Mac Mail:
Mail (Mavericks): If a mailbox is offline
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14925
Lightning bolt icons next to mailboxes in the Mail sidebar identify accounts that are offline.
To take an account online, click the lightning bolt icon. Or choose Mailbox > Online Status > Take [account name] Online, or Mailbox > Take All Accounts Online.
If you can’t take an account online, make sure you’re connected to the Internet. If a warning icon appears after the account name, click it for more information.
    Use Connection Doctor
Some mailbox names can appear dimmed if you don’t have permission to access them, such as “public” mailboxes on a server, or if the mail server is unavailable.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • My mail account to offline.  I can't send email

my mail account is offline and I can't send email - how do I get it back online

Right click on the Inbox, and choose Go Online

  • HT4759 (Macbook pro) in Mail my icloud account the smtp's server is offline & incoming gray?  the out going Mail Server (smtp) says icloud (offline) . how can it go online?

In Mail,  my icloud account the smtp's server is offline & the incoming  server is gray? How can I reverse this ?
did try going  on server SMTP in the edit section, both on " accout info" and "advance". no change. thanks

Okay, fixed it on mine.  In Mail.app:
    1) Mail menu | Preferences.
    2) Select problematic account in list on left.
    3) Select "Edit SMTP Server List..." from Outgoing Mail Server drop-down.
    4) Fix username by appending domain name
(append "@gmail.com" if standard account, or your own domain if apps user).
    5) Re-enter password.
    Save your preferences.

  • Mail takes all accounts offline for apparently no reason

For reasons unknown, Mail takes all my accounts offline. If I take all my accounts online and then click "get mail" all accounts are taken offline. This started with one account and suddenly spread to the other accounts. They are all POP accounts. The first account that did so for some reason would not allow me to change the smtp and the only choice was "account name - offline". Any ideas? I check mail manually and dont have it set to check automatically so it is not a question of checking too often. My iPhone is not set to check the accounts either...I dont have mobile me. Thanks...

I can't help here... but give my input about mail- I get sporadic weird things with mail and just learned to ignore them like a fly buzzing around the head. After a while it goes back to normal. Things like mail asking for passwords (I now just cancel this instead of re entering passwords), accounts going off line, mail freezing- this happened like three times this week... but not last month...

  • Mail accounts stay offline

    Hi
Mail has suddenly started showing all my accounts as offline, they all have the exclamation mark next to them. When I click on it I get the message that Mail can't connect to the server on port xxx. I select 'take all accounts online' and they remain offline.
I have restarted my Mac and removed all plug-ins (MailTags, Spamsieve etc) and tried again, the same thing happens.
All other Internet connections are fine.
I launched and configured GyazMail and that too works fine, no problems, as does Powermail and Mail Pilot.
I tried repairing the keychain, no difference
It would seem, therefore, that the problem lies with the Mail app. Has anyone any ideas what may be going on here and have any suggestions as to how I might get Mail back up running again? I tried moving the account plist and adding a new account, it still showed as offline as before, I have put the old plist back for the time being.
    Many thanks

    Hello kelpie99
Check with Connection Doctor to see why the accounts are offline. It could be an issue with password or a change in incoming and outgoing server information.
