thanks for help

MBX,
Since I do not use FileVault, I only know as much about it as I can find in Mac Help.
This is one excerpt that I found:
Turning off FileVault
You can turn off FileVault for your own account, or for another user if you are an administrator. When FileVault is turned off for a user account, the information in the user's home folder is no longer encrypted. You don't have to be an administrator to turn off FileVault for your own account.
While FileVault is being turned off, you are logged out of your account and will not be able to use your computer to do other tasks. The process could take a while, depending on how much information you have in your home folder.
Before you begin, make sure you have enough empty space on the disk that contains your home folder. You need as least as much space as your home folder takes up. For example, if your home folder is 20 MB, make sure you have at least 20 MB of free space available. This space is needed temporarily during this process.
To turn off FileVault for your own account:
1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Security.
2. Click "Turn off FileVault."
3. Type your login password and click Continue.
4. Read the message that appears and click "Turn off FileVault" to continue, or click Cancel to stop.
If you're an administrator, use Accounts preferences to turn off FileVault for a user. Select the user's account and enter the master password instead of the user's login password when you see the password dialog.Good Luck

  • My system preferences have suddenly disappeared! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

I went to my system preferences today and they are all gone except for my language and text icon! I have the language and text icon but that is the only icon that is displayed! where have my system preferences gone and how do i get them back??

Double click on the picture of the HD on your desktop, then look at the bottom of the window that opens.
First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • How do I disable automatic download of email in Mail OSX preferences?

In Mail Preferences/General, I have selected "Check for new messages - Manually." In spite of this, Mail has downloaded fresh messages waiting for me to read when I return to my iMac. In other words, it's not doing it Manually, but automatically.
I will soon be travelling for a few weeks. I want to be able to read my mail from an iPad on the road. If the iMac keeps downloading fresh email I wouldn't be able to read it when I'm away from home. My only choice seems to be to go in and change the settings (uncheck Remove copy from server....) in all six of my mail accounts in order to leave messages on the server for the iPad to access. I don't understand what the Check for messages Manually in the General settings is good for.

Thanks for the suggestion. It makes sense. Unfortunately, my wife will be using the iMac while I'm gone, so she would have to forward what she thought was important. Seems odd to me that the Manual command doesn't seem to do anything.

  • System Preferences Gone!? 10.5.8

    HELP ME PLEASE
for reasons unknown... my system preferences dissapeared. Im running 10.5.8 in my mac. I need that someone with the same OSX Uploads the system preferences Archive or send it by email. pleasee!!

You will have to reinstall OS X. What you ask for is illegal and piracy.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Bluetooth preferences GONE?!

My bluetooth icon is gone from system preferences. My mouse lights up but does not connect. My phone is unable to connect. What could possibly be wrong? I've restarted and shutdown, no luck. Thanks in advance

The Apple Bluetooth Software 1.5.0 is outdated. I highly recommend, to apply the Mac OS X v10.3.9 combined updater and all security updates again.
Using a headset needs several steps even needed if you have the latest computer or Mac OS X release. Please make sure to follow them in order.
Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
    Install it
Remove as much USB devices from your computer as possible
Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
Apply it to your adapter (takes very long and disconnects your Bluetooth mouse).
Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the already installed updater yourself (do not ask me why). Step 4 fails if you do not have an internal Apple Bluetooth module and your Bluetooth USB adapter is not supported by Apple. In this case, you have to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter.

  • Bluetooth System Preference Gone / Can't Find Keyboard

i booted up my mac pro today and it couldn't find my wireless keyboard. I went to System Preferences and clicked on bluetooth and got the spinning beachball. Restarted and now my bluetooth preference is gone. Changed the batteries on the keyboard and no luck. Ran cocktail (repair disk permissions, etc) and re-set p-ram. Please help!

Same thing hapened to my Macbook overnight. I leave the computer on all night. When I left my Macbook, I know my Bluetooth keyboard and Mighty Mouse were working, but now all I get is Bluetooth: Not Available. I've restarted several times and nothing changes. I appreciate any help.

  • Account Preferences Gone

I discovered today that one of my accounts preferences are gone. None of the files were gone, but when opening applications, especially address book and mail, all of the preferences and all of my contacts were missing.
The only thing that could have changed anything would be that I ended up removing the password from my account. The account that was affected was a different account though. That account was open. Two other accounts on the computer were not affected and were not logged in.
I have searched through the forums and they have not helped me. I have not changed the name of my home account nor do I have FileVault on.
    Help is much appreciated.

Open the Users folder on your hard disk and look at the folders inside for the one which contains your account's files. Once you've found it, open it and create another Finder window. Click on the Applications item in the sidebar and then open the NetInfo Manager application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Under the list of properties for your user account, find the home entry.
Once you've done this, you have two options:
    1. Go back into the Finder and select the folder you found. Choose Get Info from the File menu and note down what is listed in the Where line under General. Type this into the home property for your account followed by a / and then the name of the folder.
    2. Note down the home property, and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter this path in, remove anything after the last /, and go to that folder. Drag the folder you found into this location, and then rename it so that it has the same name as the last part of the property.
In either case, you will now need to log out and back in. Don't alter or delete any other accounts, properties, or groups in the NetInfo Manager.

  • SOME preferences gone?

I just woke up this morning, and come to find my system had shut itself off. irksome, since I had open files I had not saved, but no large deal.
however, when I start up my computer, it goes to the default background images, and shows the default dock (large size, not auto-hiding, and WAY fewer icons). this scared me, but after a minute my regular backgrounds appeared and the dock disappeared. however, the dock still did not contain my usual smattering of programs. it appeared it had been reset! I also found other things, like my mouse had been reprogrammed not to have a right click function (mouse preferences were reset), while things like my safari bookmarks are intact.
Because of the hit-or-miss style of preference explosions, it's hard to tell how widespread this is. I'm also not sure if this is a hiccup of my SYSTEM library or my user library. Also, my User Library is on it's own disc- which for a while has been telling me that I can't unmount it, due to it being "in use" by other programs.
is this a simple fix of permissions or is there something more indepth that I need to do to get ALL my preferences back to the way they were when I went to bed six hours ago?
    Thanks,
    Zack

I can't be sure, but it sounds like the mapping of your user folder to the second volume has gone awry to that Mac OS X has defaulted back to the normal location on the boot drive. You might check and see if you can confirm that (change a preference and then look at the dates in the folders and see which one is changing) and if it has, try resetting the user folder mapping back to the other volume by whatever process you used.
    Hope this helps.

  • The blue OSX colors gone?

    Hi.
I've just begun with Logic 8. The blue OSX colors are gone and hasn't been there at all!!?? The blue scroll is grey and for example the "save" button is also grey.
    Anybody know this?
    Henrik

    Hi Henrik,
This is the way Logic 8 is!!!
In fact, all of Apple's Pro Apps have had the grey scroll/zoom bars for a while. Logic's GUI and design now seems to fit in with the rest of the Apple Pro Apps...
I found the change in colours, and gui a little bit of a shock after using Logic 5, 6 & 7 - but I quite like it now

  • I put windows 8 on my mac using bootcamp and now my mac osx is gone when i see start up disks it says windows and recovery 10.9 and when i click it an reinstall the mavericks it says that i have 3 drives 2 bootcamp and 1 other and they are all locked

How to do revert back to osx from windows

    Hi bentheman2120,
If your Mac OS X volume is not showing up in your startup disks, you may need to boot from the recovery partition and use Disk Utility to repair the disk. See this article -
OS X: About OS X Recovery
If that fails, you may need to boot using Internet recovery, erase the hard drive, and start over. See the same article.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

    Hi,
I was going to trash "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spotlight.plist" in an attempt to solve a privacy list issue, but they are not there. I am looking in the correct folder(ie my home library etc) and have restarted a few times but they still don't appear... can anyone offer any help? Thank You.

  • Where have System Preferences gone???

After re-installing the operating system, because it was no longer possible to log on to my iMac, suddenly there are no more system preferences. I select "System preferences" in the Apple menu and nothing happens.

    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Michael!
Is System Preferences still in your Applications folder?
Does it appear in the Dock?
Computer > HD > Applications: HERE?
In Another Of Your Posts, your computer specs state that you are running iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.5).
This post states iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x).
What type of install did you do, to go from 10.3 to 10.2?
Is there a Previous System Folder on your HD?
When you discovered your Memory Problem, which OS X were you using?
Have you tested the new RAM?
Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm trying to lay some groundwork, to assist readers who may be able to help you.
When posting a question, it is best to divulge as much background info as possible.
All of your problems, seem to me, to be somehow related.

  • Mighty Mouse - Mouse/keyboard system preferences gone

I have a bluetooth mighty mouse instaled in my computer but now I cannot access the mouse/keyboard preferences in the System preferences. They do not appear. The mouse is working just fine but I cannot change anything in the preferences. And I cannot watch the state of charge of the batteries either. I cannot see nothing. That tab is all grey now.
I tried also to do so via the bluetooth preferences but when I ask to open the Bluetooth preference of the mouse a window appears and says that the mouse preferences are not shown because I haven't any mouse connected to my computer.
I remember that when I had access I changed the name of the mouse.
I already deleted the connection and tried to re-install it again. But the mouse appears with the same name, and the problem persists.
    Please... Any bright soul?

I have a slightly different problem: My bluetooth Mighty Mouse works in a basic mode (primary & secondary button, scroll wheel) but the side buttons and scroll buttons do not work. In the Keyboard & Mouse preferences, I have Dashboard set up for the scroll button and Expose set up for the side buttons. They do not work. If I set up the primary or secondary buttons for Dashboard or Expose, it works. In the Bluetooth tab, the Bluetooth Mouse Name is blank and Battery Level is grayed out. In the Bluetooth Preferences, it shows Mighty Mouse connected. Any ideas? I am running OS X 10.5.4 (but it didn't work in 10.5.3 either)
