Osx screen freeze

Hi all, I have a macbook pro early 2011 and a few days ago I installed Lion Mountain, the first day everything is fine, but a couple of days every now and then the screen freezes (or becomes blue or black or busts the image) therefore I am forced to restart.
Initially I thought it was a mistake of VL, but recently it has started to do it without using it. Does anyone know how to fix?

If the machine is freezing then I'd keep Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) continually running and then when it freezes look look for processes that are either using huge amounts of RAM and/or are large %CPU. That will tell you if you have a RAM issue or a problem process that needs attention. With  the small amount of information we have thats about all I can suggest. YouTube videos are HUGE RAM hogs because they on Flash so even though you have 12 GB you may need to figue out how to manage your RAM differently. Keep an eye on AM for now though.

  • Screen freezing imac osx 10.8.2

Still having problems with screen freezing using osx 10.8.2.
Bought machine only 4 months ago and has been returned for repair to apple. Replaced graphics and power supply and still have the same problem. It has to be drivers for the AMD Radeon 512mb card....
Any news or update. Thank you

Tried a posters advice to run ONYX and tick all boxes under Automation. System seems to be stable so far.. will update in a few days if stability has returned. Time for Apple to realise they have a PR nightmare on their hands and fix this ridiculous problem.
In 30 years of using MS I never had the screen freeze so why would the "Most advanced desktop on the planet" suddenly be doing it.

  • Screen freezes with LOGIC pro 7 & OSX 3.0.any ideas?

    Hi
I have a G5 with dual processors and 1.5 ram/150gb HD. I am running Logic pro 7 on the original OSX 3.0 with a Motu 828mk2 firewire interface.
The screen freezes a lot (sometimes with audio still running) and the only way is to turn it off and reboot.
I am not working with lots of audio or plug ins (maybe one or two tracks at most).
I wondered whether its the OS? maybe i need Tiger?
I would be grateful of any help

As JustinC pointed out, it would be better you were running a more 'mature' OS (also CoreAudio is part of Quicktime so if you have updated QT and not the OS you could, possibly, be running an incompatible version of CoreAudio, i'm not too sure about that.)
But considering the symptoms you mentioned, and the fact you are running very few audio tracks, I'm assuming you run a lot of MIDI.
The symptoms you describe sound a lot like a MIDI feedback loop.
You don't have any sort of inter-app MIDI routing enabled, do you ?
If you do, you need to isolate the inter-app inputs from the sequencer input, or be very careful not to select tracks which are assigned to an inter-app port (or 'all' ports)
Oh, and update the OS anyway, there is no good reason to stick with 10.3.0

  • Power Mac G5 PPC Screen Freeze Turbo Fan Issue

    Hello...
I've read most, if not all of the related posts; however, I have not seen any definitive answer to this issue.
My, almost mint condition, Power Mac G5 PPC has recently started the screen freeze, turbo fan, won't boot issue that seems to be prevalent with these models.  I've tried almost all of the suggested troubleshooting fixes and have had no luck.  My most recent attempt was to try and start in single-user mode (holding SHIFT + S at startup) and I received the following error screen then turbo fans: http://www.thishateofmine.com/Assets/photos/appleCPUpower.jpg
Remember...this is a PPC, so why am I getting an error referencing Intel CPU Power Management?  This leads me to believe the OSX 10.5.8 I've been running has installed system resources for non-existent CPU's and is causing a conflict.  This would be a major coding error on Apple's behalf, would it not?
I never had this issue when running any previous OS version and this computer had been running spectacularly.
It has only been used in my clean, smoke-free, home recording studio and if it werent' for a few blemishes left by external HDD's, this computer could pass as brand new.  There is very little internal dust and I have kept it clean with electronics approved compressed air.  I have not removed anything to get at the PSU area for cleaning, though.
If I could get it to boot from the original DVD's and install up from Panther, I would.  Based on the error message I'm receiving, I do not believe this is a logic board, RAM, CPU, etc... issue.  The computer will boot into open firmware and function fine, but not the OS; therefore, this would be an OS problem, right?  Is that not a logical mental path?
This HAS to be a known issue and have a resolve that is NOT logic board and/or CPU replacement related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW...please read this as a positive communication from a frustrated (knowledgeable enough to be dangerous) user.  I just want my G5 back.

After plugging in the G5 PPC, as it had been unplugged for several days, here are last night’s efforts:
With only the original, main Hitachi Deckstar 400GB HDD in slot 1, I attempted to boot normal, boot holding SHIFT + COMMAND + V, boot holding COMMAND + S and boot to the original install DVD, all with no joy.  In my original post I incorrectly stated I was attempting to boot into single-user mode by holding SHIFT + S, which resulted in the screen displaying the OP’s linked image.  In attempting to boot into (actual) single-user mode and verbose mode, I get two different text messages – and have taken screen photos, but have not been able to upload yet – both of which stop with “DART enabled” and then do nothing else with no cursor capability, only to result in turbo fans and having to hold the power button down to shut down.
Next I ran (again) the Apple Hardware Test from the original install DVD and everything passed.
Feeling confident the hardware is all in working order, I used my brother’s Macbook Pro 3.1 (OS v10.6.8) as the host to mount the G5 PPC in target disk mode.  The PPC’s HDD mounts up with no issues and everything is accessible, so I shut down and swapped the original HDD with a 500GB Western Digital Caviar SE16 that did not have an OS on it, restarted to AHT DVD and ran test again with everything passing.
Now I reconnected the target disk mode setup, formatted the PPC’s WD HDD and installed Leopard on it while in TDM from the MBP3.1.  Everything installed, restarted will still TDM connected, MBP3.1 started up with the PPC’s HDD as the startup disk, went through all the typical initial install information and registration and voila I’m back in target disk mode with the PPC’s HDD as my boot disk and MBP3.1’s HDD on the desktop.  Everything’s accessible, functions and looks good.
Keeping in mind I’m only dangerously knowledgeable regarding computers, I’m thinking I should be able to shut everything down and now boot the G5 PPC from the internal WD HDD I just installed the OS on, right?  Wrong.  All I get is the infamous folder with a flashing question mark.
    Help!!!  (…please???)
BTW…as it has been mentioned in a few posts, but is one thing I have not done yet, I thought it worth mentioning.  I have not replaced the internal battery, but the last time I was able to get the computer to boot to the internal HDD and run for a short period of time, after being unplugged for several days, I did have to re-enter time, date, location, etc… info.  The actual last time I got it to boot, I did not do this, as it only got as far as loading the desktop before freezing, but the time was correct.  Didn’t get a chance to check date and location, as it froze almost instantaneously.

Modern versions of OS X don't allow you to change memory allocations, but that's not likely to be the problem anyway.
What version of the OS are you running? Please also see Adobe Forums: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding for instruction on creating some reports that might be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

  • Intermittent screen freeze!! Corrupt Firmware?

A week ago my G4 iBook, running 10.4.3, woke from sleep with the screensaver screen on but no reaction from mouse button, touchpad or keyboard buttons. I shut down and attempted reboot but only got to blue screen (before OSX loading screen and progress bar). My local Apple dealer checked it and reckoned that it was definitely not a hardware problem. They presumed that the system was corrupted and recommended I reboot with the install DVD (archive & replace). I did this and then reupdated to 10.4.3 and found that if I let it sleep, it would wake with either the desktop or screensaver but no action from any input buttons. Shutting down and rebooting gave me the same, aforementioned blue screen situation. I tried another reinstall and updated to 10.4.2 as this had not given any previous problem. But.... got the same problem! I reinstalled 10.4 (erase and install) and got the same problem. I have run Disk Utility and hardware diagnostics but get a clean bill of health. Before my last reinstall, I zero'd the hard drive and have only installed 10.4 from the DVD. I have not introduced any other documents, applications or received any emails (I thought it may be a virus - I don't have protection). It worked fine on the initial welcome and set-up wizard and let me even use the web, but I let it fall asleep with the screen saver on and then got exactly the same response as my original problem. Sometimes it will boot up – but eventually the screen freezes (trackpad still moves pointer though!) and I have to shut down. Sometimes it boots up till the gray apple/gear wheel screen disappears then stops at a paler blue screen (seems a bit paler than the background of the OS loading screen with the progress bar). I'm wondering: If it is not the hardware, and it is not the system software, could it be the Firmware? I know it is sometimes necessary to update the Firmware on certain machines. Can the Firmware become corrupted? Can I check or verify the Firmware? Can I reinstall the Firmware? Hope you guys can help because I am running out of ideas!

    Hi straightshooter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
It sounds like hardware to me. When mine acted that way it was the logic board that was bad. You should call Apple, (not the local reseller), to get it taken care of.

  • Alarm sound and screen freeze

I have a 13 inch MacBook pro running OSx lion, after around 2 hours intermittent alarm sounds and screen freezes with coloured checks, reboots ok but reoccurs, it has a ssd drive any suggestions?

I just had this happen. I just installed new memory. Did you install any new hardware.

  • Gray screen after screen freeze and finder+all programs restart.

Sometimes, (like 4 or 5 times a day) my screen freezer, i get a loading circle, a gray screen and then Finder and all my programs restart.
It's doing that since i updated to Osx lion.
    Computers
         - 21.5" iMac 2010
         - 15" MacBook Pro 2006
Does anyone know what this is? And how do I solve this problem?
Because its shuts down everything im busy with (and doesn't save it).

I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
    Execute the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy /
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
    touch /System/Library/Extensions
    exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch.  They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up.  Firefox was okay.  Good Luck!

    - I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
    - My outlook express has no problems
    - other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
    - my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
    - every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this: <br />

Until recently, I loved Firefox. Lately, when I go to any website and try to download a page, the screen freezes for between 10-20 seconds while ads load. Why the screen freezes is both frustrating and annoying. I have the latest version, nothing on my computer is different, and as I said, it didn't used to do this. Any ideas what's going on?

  • Someone please help me! I live in Turkey and bought my iMac desktop in February. The dealer kept the recovery discs and won't send them. My screen freezes seconds after opening and I can't figure out how to repair it myself. Please help!

I was deleting photos when the screen froze and I had to shut down the computer manually. Now after the first minute of being turned on the screen freezes and the mouse arrow goes into that rainbow whirling disc and won't stop no matter how long I let it go. My keyboard is Turkish. My keys are not marked the same as an English one is, further complicating resolving the problem.
The dealer I bought it from doesn't speak English and wants to charge me for repairs. I refuse to pack the computer up and ship it UPS out of town for a repair I can do plus pay for shipping.
When I received my computer I was only given the manual and no system restore discs for situations such as this. I asked where they were and was told there were none.
I suspect this is a tactic to make money on bogus tech repairs off their customers. To purchase new discs, if I can find them, can cost from $30-$40 - the dealer more than likely is re-selling the discs at 100% profit. This is Cizgili Apple Store in Adana, Turkey. I wish to report them. It is a national company too. I don't have a receipt handy, but have an emailed receipt. I can't get my computer's number to get further assistance on the Apple website withput it.
I was a dedicated Windows customer until I started doing desk top publishing. I'm fighting the urge not to regret buying this computer.

If your computer is on one minute before it freezes, than you have one minute to secure your serial number.
click the apple----->click about this Mac ------> click on version----> until you see the serial number.  You may have to do this a couple of times if it freezes before you have all the numbers.  A camera might help.

  • Mac Pro Screen Freezing Issue with NVIDIA 8800 GT too

There were lots of entry in threads, where the screen freezing issue was described (disorted screen with strange lines, only reboot helps). Nearly all cases seem to be related to the ATI 2600 card.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1358062&tstart=30
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1365277&tstart=0
I opened this new thread to show, that this problems occurs not only for the ATI card but for the NVIDIA 8800 card, too.
My MacPro was delivered 8 days ago and was running without any problems. But all of a sudden, I got that screen freeze. And it wasn't the first time, I was heavely working 2-3 hours with that computer.
In total, 2 screen freezes showed on my computer. The first one during working with the computer. The second one during booting into MacOS X. The screen freeze occured during the boot phase with the grey screen and the spinning wheel.
    My configuration:
    MacPro 2.8, Dual Quad Core
    6 GB RAM
3 harddisks, 1 standard from Apple, 2 Samsung with 750GB
    MacOS 10.5.2
    Formac 20" Monitor
Perhaps others have this problem, too? Than we should emphasize, that this is not an ATI related problem.

I've actually been having the freezing issue for a while now but I didn't have the know-how to troubleshoot it (PC tech trying to support the only Mac lab in the building).
MacPro will freeze randomly (no trend in time, system strain, or open programs). The mouse will operate but will not interact with anything.
    Specs:
    MacPro - Model 1,1
    Dual Core Xeon 2.66
    2gb RAM
    nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
    Mac OS 10.4.11
The machine always has 2 displays connected to it so the workaround that was discussed for the ATI 2600 doesn't apply. I had 1 display connected here in my shop and it froze for that as well.

  • BLACK SCREEN on start up with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-power

Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any
cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears,
and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After
about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling,
    so I'm putting 2 together.
           Errors:
I got a Blue Screen of Death the first time I started it up with the overheating ritual, but I never got it since. It was 0X7B.
I got another Blue Screen of Death about a week ago, but came as it was on already and I had been using it, and said something about disabling Cache or Shadowing in BIOS. I never got it since.
           Event Viewer events found:
    1. Kernel-Power, Summary page.
There are critical events for a few things like Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63). There are 19 of them, each day 1 or 2 of them but mostly 1, so this maybe corresponds to my daily ritual.
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    2. Kernel-Processor-Power - Event ID 37, task category (7)

    3. LMS - HCMI - Event ID 2, Task Category: none
"LMS Service cannot connect to HECI driver".
I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the
driver wasnt for the system, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on.
MSCONFIG.exe, Boot Advanced Options: I have tried twice to change this 1 setting, check box "Number of processors" and change to 2 processors, because I do have 2 processors. I have been able to change
this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?
