OSX Server 3 Failed to Update Services, Reboot Fails now

I upgraded my Mini Server to Mavericks, then installed the Server 3 upgrade (paid $19.99).  The installation hangs during "Updating Services" and most windows become unresponsive.  Remains in that state for hours.  I lost patience and rebooted from a remote ssh session.  Now the server doesn't reboot.  I restored back to 10.8.5.
Has anyone encountered and resolved this condition?
To be precise, during the Update Services process, the gauge stops at the "d" in Updating... label.

I had the same problem. Finally found a solution that appears to work fine.
Using any free app uninstaller, remove "server" from your applications and remove it and all of its related files.
Empty the trash.
Restart your Mac holding down the 'shift' key. This puts you in safe mode.
Go to the Apple app store and re-download the "server" app.It will ,et you do this, becuase it cannot find a copy of the app anyplace on your computer.
After downloading and installation, configure the 'server' app following its commands.
Restart as usual .... presto ... works!
You can then re-configure as required.

  • Windows server update services installation failed the update could not be found

    Hi everybody...
I have tried to install WSUS Role on windows 2008 r2 ent server. its says windows server update services installation failed.
actually the wsus role for SCCM 2007, asper the prerequesite i have finished all other steps, only wsus role is pending.. please help..

    Thanks FinMaky,
    The keys are:
    (1) to delete WindowsUpdate registry keys, and then
    (2) enable/restart Windows Update services.
    (3) also to make sure there's no WSUS policy defining update server is in place
    This resolves my issue.
    BIG THANKS!

  • Asset Intelligence Update Service Point fails to install

    Hi,
I have one SCCM 2012 sp1 cu2 primary site running on Windows 2008 R2, and a separate SQL 2008 R2 database runnining in a cluster.
I installed the Asset Intelligence Service point using the default settings, but the component is critical.
When I look in AIUSMSI.log it tells me I do not have permissions to configure services - I am a local administrator on the primary server though and I can manuall stop and start services - error is:
Product: Asset Intelligence Update Service Point -- Error 1920. Service 'AI_Upate_Service_Point failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
I ran the AIUS.msi and recieved the same error.
I went into services and stopped and restarted BITS, so my permissions seem fine. Has anyone else seen this problem?
    Thanks
    Jaz

I have created a Reddit in SCCM, describing my peoblem.
Please, can anyone take a look at it?
    http://www.reddit.com/r/SCCM/comments/2jbkfr/asset_inteligence_update_service_installation_ai/
    it goes like this:
I have came across an error entry in Monitoring node in SCCM console. Monitoring - System Status - Component Status, there was an entry about AI Update Service giving errors like this:
    1) On 10/15/14 08:38:03, component SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER on computer "SERVER FQDN" reported: Site Component Manager failed to reinstall this component on this site system.
Solution: Review the previous status messages to determine the exact reason for the failure. Site Component Manager will automatically retry the reinstallation in minutes. To force Site Component
Manager to immediately retry the reinstallation, stop and restart Site Component Manager using the Configuration Manager Service Manager.
    2) Product: Asset Intelligence Update Service Point -- Error 1920. Service 'AI_UPDATE_SERVICE_POINT' (AI_UPDATE_SERVICE_POINT) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start
    system services.
What I have tried to do: - Reinstall the role from ConfigMgr console
    - Install the AI role manualy from .\ConfigMgr\bin\x64\AIUS.msi with elevated rights (domain admin rights) and from elevated CMD (domain admin rights) - Install the AIUS.msi with local administrator
    account
    Manual installation was both:
    - During the time SCCM tries to reinstall the role by it self
    - During the time the role isn't installed at all
    - During the time the role was installed before it was uninstalled for the first time when I started troubleshooting this
Basically nothing can start the service during the installation, not even account with domain admin rights.
Do you have any idea what can I do next?

  • Asset Intelligence Update Service Point fails to update

    Hello,
as the titel says, for a couple of days now, the Site- and Component Status has been showing a critical error for the Asset Intelligence Synchronization Point, stating that the Update Service Point cannot be updated.
The system running is CM 2012 SP1 CU1 on a Server 2008 R2 SP1 Host with an SQL 2012 SP1 installation on the same machine. The AI Point syncs just fine and I can't "see" any errors in daily business tasks.
The AIUSSetup.log states that AIUS.msi could not be installed. Checking the AIUSMSI.log, I find the "error": AIUSDetectDowngrade_ErrorMessage = A newer version of the SCCM Asset Intelligence Update Service Point is already installed. Which
makes the MSI abort. Seems okay to me, but it retries every 60 minutes... is this a known behaviour/error? How could I fix this or turn the update off, if the whole thing's okay?
    Cheers,
    Fred

It's been a while since I posted this question and I've found a way to get this running.
The entire error message is a bit confusing, as the source was simple - the AI Update Service Point Service timed out when trying to start. Manually executing AIUS.msi, thus getting access to AI_UPDATE_SERVICE_POINT under services, which did not show up
earlier, then changing the startup type to delayed and changing the ServicesPipeTimeout value to 60 seconds in the registry (HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control) and then rebooting did the trick. Everything's working fine now.
    Cheers,
    Fred

  • OSX Server Caching iOS updates

    Hello,
I have a question regarding the OSX Server Caching feature, the documentation states that this feature will cache all updates(including iOS) which is great for the company i work at.
However, the biggest issue is that the server itself does not download or cache the iOS updates, if i were to add the *.ipsw files manually to "~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/" for example the server will NOT cache these.
If a computer in the network downloads the IPSW via iTunes, the server will not cache this.
If i were to restore a device in iTunes on the server and iTunes has to download the update, it is NOT cached.
We're trying to have all IPSWs ready to go from one device instead of 7-10 devices individually downloading each and every update from Apple but we cannot find a solution for this.
If anyone knows a good solution, that would be great.

    The answer is here:
OS X Server: Caching service doesn't cache the iOS 8 update

  • Mavericks 10.9.1 update not appearing in Server's Software Update service?

While I have been able to update my server to 10.9.1, my client computers all rely upon my server for their software updates.  And although i have repeatedly had the Software Update service fetch all new updates over the last day or so, the Mavericks 10.9.1 update still isn't showing up.
Does anyone else who is using the Software Update service actually have that update available to them, or is this a case of Apple simply not having made this update available to that service yet?  And if so, does anyone have an idea of how much of a delay should I expect?

    Hi again
Try running the following command in the terminal on your clients:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
The desired return value should be*:
    http://server.mydomain.com:8088/content/catalogs/others/index-10.9-mountainlion- lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
*The base URL might be different depending on if you are using standard SU settings or if you have moved the files somewhere else.
If this is not your return value try running this on your clients again:
    sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://server.mydomain.com:8088/content/catalogs/others/index-10.9-mountainlion- lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
You can reset the settings by running this command:
    sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL

  • No explanation for failed android update service?

Why has no member of the Verizon support staff come forward with a clear explanation for the lack of Android 2.3.4? It is beyond doubt now that the version in question is in fact available for Verizon to release to their US customers. Maybe there is a valid reason for delaying the release of an essential update, but until VZW stops avoiding numerous complaints and attempts to resolve the issue, situations such as these will continue to tarnish their brand. Do your part and  warn others who maybe be lured into ordering this failure of a phone. Tell them to get the superior AT&T 4g version or wait until a newer model is released. We have been tricked into committing two years of our lives to a network that refuses to answer questions.
I spoke on the phone with Verizon support. The employee was very friendly and seemed genuinely concerned. After a lengthy wait on hold, the only information the employee could provide was that it was maybe SE's fault, and gave me a number to call them. Of course, support at SE explicitly confirmed what everyone on here has said: VERIZON HAS THE UPDATE AND THEY DECIDE WHEN TO RELEASE IT.
So, VZW... you have the update and you have yet to provide us with fully-functional devices. Instead of ignoring the issue, respond directly to this post. WHEN will the update 2.3.4 be released? I can't wait for this nightmare to start all over again once ICS drops.

Cause they are too lazy to release it. I'm done with this crappy company once my contract is up unless they can get their act together and give us the updates Sony has given them.

  • My phone has died. I tried upgrading my Iphone 3gs yesterday to ios. It failed to update, it has failed to restore. Now its just showing a plug and Itunes on the screen. Please help soonest

My I phone is literally dead. I tried upgarding the software yestreday, it refused saying there was an error, I was given an option to restore it, it has failed. Now there is no old software as well as the new software. Its showing a plug and an Itunes signal on top. Thats all that it has. I will be very grateful to receive any form of help out there.

The iOs 5.1 is a huge file that needs to be dowloaded when updating/restoring, your phone hasnt completed the update so its now in recovery mode. Look on the left of itunes, it should say downloads under the store section with a spinning wheel, click that and youll see the update file with a time remaining, wait for that download to finish then try the restore again  and it should work

I received a message fron norton that it had updates and my computer needed to reboot. I said ok, it turned off and won't turn back on. I check the electric supply - it is okay. green light on back of computer is on. pressing down the power button has no effect.

    Dglaser, welcome to the forum.
I am not certain that the Norton update has anything to do with your computer not booting.  I suggest troubleshooting the power supply unit (PSU).

  • HT6172 Server Update v3.1.1: How does one get past the Updating Services screen: "The server is being updated on this Mac"?

Upon opening Server after the update has installed, it simply hangs for hours on end (more than 5 hours) on the above screen, with the progress bar showing about 1/3 complete. Please help!

    -update-
Did not yet completely reset the server. (It's not mine… it's from a customer so completely resetting the server is really the last thing he wants to be done…)
but I've digged deeper into the problem and the logs.
Test: renaming the .plist files mentioned in the arcticle about resetting the server
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.serverd.plist > /Library/Preferences/com.apple.serverd-old.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd.plist > /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd-old.plist
This triggers also a 'new setup' from the server instead of 'updating services'.
And even now the configuration of the server halted on the same place in the logs!

Then I've tried to expermiment a little bit in the /Library/Server folder with renaming some folder to see if thsi could solve the problem. (Because the folders are getting recreated with default settings and data). So I've renamed "Calendar and Contacts" and tested: No success. I've renamed "PostgreSQL" and tested: No success. …
When I read some articles about these problems most of the time the problem seems to be related to some 3th party from specific software is installed, like when someone installed another version of Python instead of using Apple's. The upgrade process does not seem to like this and freezes.
A quick look in the Downloads folder of this specific server showed an installer of pgAdmin, used to configre/control PostGreSQL databases… so -in this case- this was installed by another external company to do somehting on that server which I don't know what it does .
But for now, I've pinpointed the problem. The original PostGreS of OS X Server on this server is tampered/overwritten by another PostGreSQL and this will be the reason why the update does not work.
I have to phone that other company next week to see if they are aware of this issue, and hopefully they know how to fix this.
    bottom line
reading the ServerSetup.log is the first thing to do!

  • Connect unmanaged clients to Software Update Services 10.8.4

    Software Update Services 10.8.4
I cannot get unmanaged clients to connect to my ML Software Update Service
    I tried the following versions:
sudo defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://my.sus.local:8088/
sudo defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://my.sus.local:8088/index.sucatalog
sudo defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://my.sus.local:8088/catalogs.sucatalog
sudo defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://my.sus.local:8088/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.su catalog
I tried the URL with and without double quotes (makes no difference in the output of 'sudo defaults read')
sudo defaults read com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL shows the value that was set, but the connection just times out.
The only way to successful connect is if I specify the CatalogURL in the softwareupdate command.
    sudo softwareupdate -l --CatalogURL http://my.sus.local:8088
That allows me to list, download and install updates.
    What am I missing?
    TIA

what happens if you point the defaults command here ?
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL

  • Mac OS X Lion Software Update service does not reflect 10.7.1 update

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard server to 10.7.
Everything went ok, and the server tools are installed and working.
Last week, Apple released the 10.7.1 update, but this update is not reflected in the Lion Server's Software Update service.
Every time I start the catalog sync (either in the Server Admin app, or through Terminal), the sync process completes correctly without any errors, but the latest 10.7.1 update is not listed in the available updates.
Did I miss something there ?
Thanks in advance for your help,

    Additional info:
I followed KBase art HT4771, and made the following changes:
    1. Stopped the Software Update Service and quit Server Admin app
    2. Updated /etc/swupd/swupd.plist to begin hosting OS X Lion software updates by typing the following Terminal command:
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'add :otherCatalogs:2 string index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog' /etc/swupd/swupd.plist
    3. Updated /etc/swupd/swupd.conf to allow OS X Lion computers to receive updates as follows:
         "RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
         RewriteRule ^/index\.sucatalog$ /index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
    became
         "RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} Darwin/11
         RewriteRule ^/index\.sucatalog$ /index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
After completing this and restarted the Software Update Service, the Server's Software Update Service could find all updates, including Mac OS X 10.7.1 and more Lion updates (Multi-lingual voices, Server Essentials, ... ).
The issue is now that the client computers cannot find the Software Update server, though it is properly connected, regardless the selected catalog in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.
I am now considering to erase all updates from server, delete all config files, and restart service from scratch.
Any other idea before I start the big deletion ?

  • Why does OSX Server serve out Wikis so slowly?

    Hi,
I didn't see this topic so here's my question. I've got OSX server running and updated. I've installed Mediawiki and it works fine, but its very slow. When I've had other Web pages up, they are quick, but for some reason the Wiki is incredibly slow. So slow that when you post a change, it times out before refreshing. You can see the progress bar move half way (indicating the changes are saved), but then you sit and wait and it times out. If you go back and refresh the page, your changes are there.
I'm on a University Campus and have pretty good internet connection speeds. Our Tech support stated he heard Wikis are served slow on OSX and I'd need to do somethign to speed it up, but no idea what.
Its a G4 with a couple GB of RAM. Any questions to help me trouble shoot this I'll be happy to answer. I know Leopard is going to have the Wiki server, but I'd like to get this working before then!

I guess I am somewhat confused, and my real
concern is does plain old OSX really provide the
    basic server functions mentioned above
    out-of-the-box?
    Yes.
    Here is more
info about what "OS X Server" is. If you don't
know you need it, you probably don't:)
Microsoft isn't much better with naming, considering
I used to use MS Office at home to do
    schoolwork...
Yah, I'm a confused apple newbie, an old UNIX hacker, and I would like to learn more web type programming, so that is my interest in learning some new things.
    Thanks for the answer.
