OSX Server and Mac Mini and Simple Network functionality

Hi not sure if this is the best place for this question but here goes.
I am relatively new to Mac after a life lost to the PC/Microsoft world. Anyway I have a small home network and store all my documents on a network attached hard drive (Buffalo Terastation).
I travel a lot and want external access to my files and email via the internet. I was going to set up a PC Server with MS Small office and Exchange to facilitate this but then started to think that an Apple solution would be better. I don't want to spend a fortune as it is basically just me, and maybe another user or two, that would use the server.
I started to think that Mac OSX Server running on a 2GHz Mac Mini with 120/160gb drive and 2 gig Ram. If the mini would run OK then this would be ideal due to low noise, footprint, consumption, etc and pretty cheap as well.
I run a iMAC 24 and 2 macbook laptops all running Leopard.
Would this be a practical and workable solution to my needs ?
Thanks in advance.
Simon

Would the "Back to my Mac" service with .Mac not work for you? You wouldn't necessarily need a server then...
File sharing on the workstation is good as Dave says so you don't need to go whole hog for the Server platform.
But if you wanted to go for Leopard Server, you'd be able to do a **** sight more than you could with Exchange - I wrestle with it every day at work but am happy to come back home to a Mac world!

Lion server on Mac mini server stop responding to ssh and VNC (other services like mail, ical works well)
    Version is Lion server 10.7.4
When I attach a monitor to it, I saw all the buttons and menus stopped responding too. I can only push and hold the power button on the box to shutdown.
    It only started happening recently.
    Anyone has any clue?
Thanks for the help in advance!!!

Found that the second hard drive is broken. I have to go to the apple store to have it replaced.
I had to press the power button to turn the server off for several times, then the broken hard drive went disappeared. After that, I had to disable the Spotlight. Then the server went back to work normally.
Now I made a CCC copy of the primary hard drive, and would like to have the server run on the external raid disk (connected through thunderbolt). Does anyone have previous experience with it? Any expectable drawback or issue with this setup?

I have a airport time capsule, an older airport extreme, and an older airport express.  I want to hard wire my Mac Mini to the network.  What is the best arrangement of the devices?  which ones should be hard wired to optimize extending the network?

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • Website issue with osx server and hosting

so i had a website hosted from my osx server and i had bought the domain name from godaddy it worked great but i desided to instead of hosting it on my osx server to just host it on  godaddy so i turned to server off and added the domain to my godaddy account hosting and now it works but one problem all computers can veiw the website but mine. i think it has somthing to do with the fact that my mac was the one hosting it. but if i go to my browser and go to my wesite i get a error but than i go to any other computer and it works great help please

    A couple ideas
check our /etc/hosts file, you might have an entry for your domain.
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
do you see any entries for your domain? If so:
edit the file by navigating with the arrow keys, delete the line
with your domain. Hit ctrl-x when done (enter 'y' to save the change)
    Clear your DNS cache
         dscacheutil -flushcache
Try a different DNS server, go into your network settings (In System Preferences)
Go to Ethernet or Wifi (whichever you are using), click Advanced and under the DNS tab enter:
         8.8.8.8
Make sure no entries are ABOVE it.
If none of this works, send the results of these commands:
         cat /etc/hosts
         cat /etc/resolv.conf
dig +short mydomain.com   (replace with your domain)
The results of these should point us in the right direction.

  • IChat LAN-LAN bonjour connection via OSX-Server and Draytek routers ?

We want to configure a LAN-LAN iChat intranet connection via our OSX-Server and several Draytek 2600 routers. We have static IP-addresses in all local LANs, do LAN-connection via DynDNS and opened the iChat NAT-Ports on every router as described in several posts.
LAN-LAN connection (e.g. volume mounting and ARD (Apple Remote Desktop)) works fine. We started iChat on every Mac and chatting via .mac accounts also works, but not via Bonjour. The logged-in users are not listed in the iChat bonjour contact list.
What do we have to configure more ? Starting the iChat service on the OSX-Server ?
    Thanks in advance for help

Bonjour works without a server but will only work within the same subnet. It's likely your routers are on different subnets and so using Bonjour you would only be able to see contacts on the same subnet.
If you're not seeing anybody else at all, even those on the same subnet as you, then perhaps your firewall hasn't been opened to the iChat Bonjour ports (TCP, 5297 and 5298). There's also an entry for it in each Mac's Firewall config pane.
You best bet may be to run an XMPP server. iChat server is an XMPP/Jabber server (using a copy of the pretty old Jabberd 1.4 code), but you might want to consider running the superior OpenFire (http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp) on your server instead.
Just create all the users on the server and then enter the relevant details into each copy of iChat.

  • How to install OS X Server on Mac Mini w/o external display?

    I have:
Brand new mac mini (Mountain lion still in start-up mode)
    OId mac mini
    Macbook pro
    Network & firewire cable
    Time Capsule
    Remote desktop
    I don't have
    An external display
I want to setup the new mac mini as a server, and migrate my data from a time capsule back up of an older mac mini.
How can I do this without an external display? I read that you can just plug the new Mac Mini into the network and remote desktop will see it in set-up mode, but this doesn't work.
    Thanks!

If you have no external keyboard (even a Windows USB one would do) then you have no way to boot the new Mac mini in Target Disk Mode.
If you have a keyboard and can boot the Mac mini in Target Disk Mode then you can do the following -
Boot the new Mac mini in Target Disk Mode by holding down the T key
Connect it via either FireWire or Thunderbolt cable to the MacBook Pro
Tell the MacBook Pro to boot from the Mac mini which will act as external hard disk drive
The MacBook Pro screen and keyboard will then be in use but you will be configuring the software on the Mac mini hard disk
You can then turn on Screen Sharing
Shutdown the Mac mini and thereafter do everything via Remote Control

  • How to instal Mac OS X 10.4 server on mac mini

I try to install mac osx 10.4 server on mac mini intel solo, but no success. Thanks for assistance.

You basically can't run Mac OS X Server effectively on an Intel machine at this time. There is no Intel-native version of it, and if you install the PowerPC modifications onto an Intel version of Mac OS X client, you can't update it.

  • How do i reload OS X Server on Mac Mini, App store says installed but no reset or reload, system tells me to reinstall

how do i reload OS X Server on Mac Mini, App store says installed but no reset or reload, system tells me to reinstall?

Reboot holding down the Command and R keys.  This will get you in to the Recovery partition.  From there you can reinstall the entire OS.  Please note, Server.app will not be included in the reinstall.  You will need to log into your App store account to download it.

  • Can I use my mac mini as a network drive on my wireless network?

I would like to redeploy my Mac Mini to be a network server drive off of my Airport Extreme router? Is this possible? Is it difficult? How do I do it? Thanks!

Yes, you can use your Mac mini as a network file server. The mini can be connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by either Ethernet or wireless to share files to other network clients.
Please see the following Apple Support article for details on how to configure your Mac for file sharing.

  • Airport Extreme and Mac Mini on different networks

    Hello ALL,
I am creatng a Mac Mini server. I have the Mac Mini connected via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme. I read somewhere that for server purposes, I should wire the mac mini versus using the wireless connection.  My Extreme is bridged with the Uverse 2wire modem and I have wifi disabled on it.  The problem I have s my ipad and iphones are all on the wireless network created . I use remote apps for the mac mini. As of now the remote apps do not recognze the mac mini becuse its connected via ethernet.  Any solutions for ths? Can i turn on Ethernet and Wireless at the same time?    THANKS!!

My Extreme is bridged with the Uverse 2wire modem and I have wifi disabled on it.
The it on the end of the sentence could equally refer to the Extreme or the 2wire.
I think you mean the Extreme.
Can i turn on Ethernet and Wireless at the same time?
The context suggests you are talking about the mac mini but you could equally well refer to the Extreme.
Do not mix up domains.. I think this is what the problem is. If you have wireless on the 2wire and the idevices are getting IP from the 2wire, they are also getting a domain.
Mavericks is very sensitive to domain. The domain by default on the AE is local .. but the domain on the 2wire could well be your ISP.
I would recommend you turn wireless on .. on the Airport Extreme.. not on the Mini. And see if the idevices when connected to the same domain can then also connect to the mini.
    Tell me your results.
A netstat scan is a great tool to use in the Mac.. open the network utility and see what you get for domains. See if the phone etc are on a wrong domain.

  • Connecting iMac with 10.5 and mac-mini in ethernet network

Just bought an older Mac Mini for in the house stuff (our office is next to the house). Had to forego wireless because of distance and walls.
So, we are connected with ethernet cable, and a Linksys router in the house that connects to the modem/router in the office.
I have configured and configured and I cannot get the two macs to let me do anything except see each other. They do see each other, but that is all. When I try to connect I get nothing or I get "The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again."
The IP on both units when I look at the network IP address is 192.168.x.xx - but after they differ.
The mac mini uses 10.4 - while the iMac is on 10.5.

If I set the router - as you said, what do I do to do that?
    What exact Brand/Model is it?
Will setting it differently effect that?
It shouldn't, though you'd likely have to power cycle things to have them pick up the new settings.
If I go the second route, am I only changing the subnet mask? I wrote earlier that when I try to configure that, I don't see an option for changing the subnet mask. So, how do I do that?
Yes, just the Subnet Mask, but copy down the IP & Router numbers of each first, because when you click on Using DHCP & choose Manual instead, you have to fill in all 3, put the old IP & Router numbers back in but the new Subnet Mask.
If anything goes wrong, just change back to Using DHCP & renew the lease.

  • How can I retrieve and reinstall OSX Lion for Mac Mini

I inadvertently deleted my OSX 10 Lion operating system on my Mac Mini -- tried redownloading it but continually received an automated response saying something like ".... unable to download the software, try again later"   That is not an exact quote  but close.  I tried several times to download the software but always received the same message.  I did verify that WIFI was up and working properly on my separate laptop.   Would like help in rebuilding my Mac Mini Operating system.

If your Mini is the "Mac mini (Mid 2010)" you quoted in your question, that would make it a Macmini4,1.
These Minis shipped running some variant of OS X 10.6 and should have included OS on DVD.
You may find it difficult to get back to 10.8 if you didn't save a copy of the downloadable installer.
If you boot holding down the <Option> key, do you see a Recovery partition? If so, is it for 10.8?
    Inquiring minds want to know!

  • In trying to reinstall OSX to our Mac Mini, the computer accepts, reads and then rejects the disc, nothing but blue on the screen.  What should I do next?

Our 2009 Mac Mini became quite sluggish and then just wouldn't function.  I tried reloading the OS with the original disc from Apple, but the computer rejected the disc and the screen was all blue.  Next, I shut down the machine, inserted the disc, turned it on, the screen is a faint gray in color, Apple logo in the middle, the disc came out.  What should I next try?

    Apple logo in the middle,
The Apple logo is not contained in your Mac's ROM. Seeing it indicates that your Mac found a bootable device, and loaded the initial blocks from that device. I expect you booted from the damaged hard drive.
Use the Option key held down at Startup to get clarity over exactly what drives can be seen, and what your Mac thinks they contain. Wait for it to draw an icon for every potentially-bootable Volume. Deliberately select the device you want to use as the Boot Drive.
You must have a wired keyboard plugged directly into the chassis to use snag keys at Startup. A wireless keyboard that is already paired can be used, but the exact timing is more difficult.

  • Can't reach network video server on Mac Mini's USB Ethernet Adapter.

I am trying to connect an IP video server to my Mac Mini's USB>Ethernet adapter. The server works fine on the built in Ethernet "en(0)", but is unreachable on the USB>Ethernet adapter network"en(3)".
Is this a subnet issue? I don't know much about networking obviously, but I think I just need to find a way to designate the proper port to look on, because the Mac is looking on the built in Ethernet only when I specify http://192.168.0.90:80/
The en(3) is configured for DCHP.
I could just hook the server up to the built in Ethernet, but then I'll have to run new and very long cat 5 cable.
I'd love to hear any ideas on how to get this working.

The Network Settings for the USB>Ethernet port are:
    IPv4: Using DHCP
    IP Address 169.254.33.152
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Router: (none)
    DNS Server: (none)
    Search Domains: (none)
