OSX to Redhat 8

This may be slightly off topic, it is more a question about Red Hat, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
I have an old Dell Precision n350 running Red Hat 8. After a few years and a new Mac it has kind of sat unused. I am planning to make it a dual boot (Debian and Windows), but when I used it I put a lot of work related files on it that I would like to save. Writing to CD or DVD isn't really practical. What I'd like to do is be able to get on via appletalk and grab the files I want (no need to grab .kde directories, etc). I am having some trouble making that happen. Does anyone have a good resource for a quick and dirty way to get access to my Dell via appletalk?

You may need Netatalk:

  • Performance and Memory Problems on OSX

Firefox seems to have some sort of memory leak. Even once I remove all the add-ons, and no matter which web pages, after about a day, Firefox is slow and I have to restart the browser. When using the diagnostics within Mac OSX, Firefox is consuming twice as much memory as Safari and is consistently the biggest CPU consumer. It would be nice if someone profiled the code and actually made sure it was optimized.

We are with the same problem. We read a lot about the vm in the RHAS 3.0. The vm was improved but, with bugs. We found a lot of inactive pages that, after the clean state, does'nt deallocate properly. This makes the thread kernel "kswapd" works a lot, taking all the cpu in the io process.
There is a known bug related to "kswapd" thread in the RHAS 3.0 kernel. The RedHat promess to solve the problem in the nexts releases (I really doubt it, because there was already 3 releases after its announces).
We have checked some strange behaviors too... The machines with Linux RH AS 3.0 + Oracle products (OracleDB and OracleIAS) are freezing randomically. We think that the shared memory are allocating kernel space pages, but we didn't found any evidences yet.
    The workarounds (not tested yet):
    - Upgrade to the latest kernel.
    or
    - Use the hugemem kernel (even when using less than 16GB of RAM, some guys reported that this solve the problem)
    or
    - Compiling a clean kernel directly from kernel.org. In this case, we don't have support from Oracle, but maybe the problem could be resolved until RH publish some bugless vm code with your kernel.

    Hello
I installed Redhat Linux on my PPC Mac Mini, now I want to go back to OSX it seems that OSX can no longer see my HD. The hard drive has not failed because I can boot into Linux fine.
Any clues as to what to do?

  • Re-evlauting OSX Server Role

Advice and suggestions re follwoing would apreciated.
    Context
3 offices connected by VPN handled by dsl routers
Main office 6 macs 6 main users.
    1 remote admin office
    1 remote branch office
OSX Server current Panther, Tiger available.
    Redhat Serving Filemaker
    Fedora DNS server
    ARD across the board
    Background
Have been running OSX Server serving mail, web site (connected to Filemaker) and user home directories centrally managed on the server.
Concept was anyone can log in at any machine and work.
Experience has been that nobody does. Also that serving home directory up to remote office has been slow and the centralised management never quite fulfilled the promise eg printers still have issues with drivers being on server and client. People like to customise their workspaces etc etc.
We are about to move up to Filemaker 8 Server and Tiger Server. (2 G4 800s available).
We had a server failure (inexplicable disc full and refilling).
Emergency response was to move mail off to Fedora and set up local user accounts on the machines to keep people working while we resolved the server issue.
    Question.
My inclination is to give up on LDAP Home directories and leave everyone with their local user accounts.
Centralise management through ARD and ssh.
Leave the mail on Fedora and use webmin to administer it,
Leave the 2 G4 *00s with on OSX Svr on each, one for Filemaker and one for the web.
One down side is inability to build a machine from an image and have all users available but I’m wondering what else beyond that am I missing.
Any guidance on which way to go would be appreciated. Back to mail, web and users on one server or local users and single function serve.
    Regards
    Eric

    Hi David
Thanks for responding. As a brief OFF topic I was showed a Unix friend your name in the list yesterday whose login in our systems is davidh ! He said he's not moonlighting
Well, that's several kettles of fish
If you have a moment we could feast !
I would never have recommended using network home
directories in the situation you describe, and that
feature is not intended for regular use remotely, not
at all. Clients are expected to be on the same
network. I'm certain that over VPN it would be an
atrociously slow if the added latency didn't cause
    alot of failed logins.
We have done ok on that front but speed has been problematic. Hence I was already thinking of a local account and rsyncing back to the server.
My main aim is to reduce time I have to spend managing the technology and the attractions were:
    1. Single drive to back up.
    2. Single consitent interface for people (which they hate !)
    3. Login anywhere for anyone
    4. Being able to do instals updates etc by picking up their machine (mac minis) mounting as a target drive. Overwriting with an updated image using netrestore (eg updating panther to tiger)
    5. Single place to backup
We had been using ASIP and Remote Access/Timbuktu so I didn't have much idea of what Remote Desktop could do.
Is there a most efficient way to manage the machines with local users accounts ?
As for the issue of drive(s) filling up, that one
issue alone merits its own topic
I suspect in the end one user didn't ever empty her mail trash. I wasn't monitoring and the disc filled. Next incoming mail put it into a flat spin. Mounted in target disc mode removed a bunch of stuff. Rebooted but couldn't log in. Discovered afp had switched off. Turned it back on, coould log in and all the user directories served up again ok. Sort of could have recovered better than I feared.
    , but separating
services between different servers (when that's an
option) in generally a good idea.
I'm leaning that way confining OSX to web and filemaker. Leaving mail where it is now which is noticeably faster because its not running an a g4 with a 10gig drive and 800mg of ram.
You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a base image
of the client machines for use with a bootable
Firewire drive, or use the server tools to setup
    NetBoot/NetInstall. Bombich's NetRestore Helper is
also an excellent alternative way of setting up and
    managing the images.
Note that if you have or get any Intel Macs, you'll
want to run Tiger server if intending to
    NetBoot/NetInstall those client Macs.
    This is ok now.
Have users use the OS X server as a central
file-server, that will probably be a good start. Then
implement backup for the server if you haven't
    already.
The challenges I'm seeing at the moment are:
    1. Setting up print settings on each machine
    2. Configuring each mail app for each.
    3. Creating a backup method that has to log in to each users machine to backup stuff.
    4. Keeping the users in the server directories when they save so I don't wipe out stuff if I upgrade.
    5. Getting Remote Desktop's install package option to work with OS upgrades form PAnther to Tiger and so on into the future.
Its that repetitive stuff I have to either remotely control there machine to do or sit at it to do that's daunting.
eg. I couldn't find anywhere a way to use the Terminal function in Remote Desktop to set their mail clients to the new mail server address. Is there a mac terminal apps reference.
Any thoughts on best management of these sorts of things
    Regards
    Eric

  • Performance between LV6.1 + Mac OS9 and LV7 + Mac OSX

    Hi,
I use a PowerMac G4 bootable on OS9 and OSX (10.2.8). I run one application (G progamming + CIN) on the 2 OS (one in LV6.1 and one in LV7).
My application do Real Time analyse. My problem is performances are better on OS9 than on OSX !!!
I don't understand why? Anybody has a little idea of the origin of this mytery ??
    Thanks for all help.
PS : The same test on a PC on XP pro + LV6.1 and Linux RedHat + LV7.1 give the same performances on the 2 OS...

    Of course it's LV7.O + RedHat 9, sorry...
I haven't narrowed down the area in loss of performance :
    - profile VI --> approximativly the same result on OS9 than on OSX.
    - small VI test on part of code --> performances are egual or better with LV7 on OSX !!!
    - modification of the excution thread or/and priority --> not conclusive. (On RedHat, this modification is radical for the increased of the performance !!)
    - compiling the CIN with speed optimization --> not conclusive...
The last thing I think, it's that run OSX is more expensive in CPU time than OS9... Is it possible? how test it?
I hope this is not a problem like this, because I can't optimized it !!!

  • HELP! Can not install Oracle 8.1.5 w/ RedHat 6.1!

I can not get Oracle 8.1.5 to install onto Linux RedHat 6.1. The
Oracle installation script generates several errors. I have
tried several attempts, using different options, but they all
    generate errors.
Please help. The Oracle Installation scripts appear to be very
buggy... or perhaps they are incompatible with the standard
RedHat 6.1 release. Either way, it is very frustrating.
I have documented one of my (failed) installation attempts below.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
I am installing Oracle onto a Dell Latitude CPi PC w/ 128MB RAM,
a 366MHz Pentium II, and RedHat 6.1 (using the standard Linux
2.2.12-2 kernel). RedHat was installed using the standard "Gnome
    Workstation" configuration.
    The Oralce CD is labeled:
    "Oralce 8i Enterprise Edition
    Release 8.1.5
    for Linux
    (c) Oracle Corporation 1999"
I got this CD about one week ago at Oracle OpenWorld '99 in Los
Angeles... it should be their "latest & greatest" version so far.
    1. Pre-Installation and ./runInstall
I created an "oracle" Unix account w/ groups "oinstall" (the
primary group) and "dba" (a secondary group).
I created directories /u01 through /u04, belonging to oracle.
I setup .cshrc and sourced it, containing:
    umask 022
    setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0
    xhost +
    setenv ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle
    setenv ORACLE_HOME ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.5
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest
    setenv PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib
    setenv NLS_LANG US7ASCII
    I downloaded jre116_v5 and installed to /usr/local/jre.
Finally, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    ./runInstall
Problem: I got the error (from ./runInstall):
Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /usr/local/jre/bin/jre.
    Please wait...
    Error in CreateOUIProcess(): -1
    : Bad address
Workaround: Executed the following commands instead:
    cd /mnt/cdrom/install/linux
    ./runIns.sh
    3. runIns.sh and root.sh
I selected the following options (from ./runIns.sh):
    Source: /mnt/cdrom/stage/products.jar
    Destination: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5.0.0
    Typical (585MB)
Installable Components: Oralce Intelligent Agent 8.1.5.0.0
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
    Directory for Database Files: /u02
Then (when instructed by ./runIns.sh), I attempted to execute
    (from the
    "root" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5
    ./root.sh
    Problem: I got the error:
    "bash: ./root.sh: Permission denied"
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x root.sh
    ./root.sh
    5. Configuration Tools
The Oracle Installer (./runIns.sh) attempted to execute:
    A. Net8 Configuration Agent
    B. Oracle Database Configuration Agent
Problem: The "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" failed with
    the following error message:
"One or more tools have failed. It is recommended but not
required that these tools succeed for this installation.
You can now select these tools, read its details to examine
why they have failed, fix those problems, and retry them.
Or, you can click "Next" to continue."
When I selected the "Oracle Database Configuration Agent" for
more info, I got the following additional details (as the cause
    of the error):
"A required command line argument is missing."
    The log file
    "/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log" recorded:
"Command which is being spawned is /usr/local/jre/bin/jre
    -Duser.dir=/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/assistants/dbca/jlib

    failed"
Workaround: There is obviously nothing I can do to fix this
problem. It appears to be an internal bug in ./runIns.sh.
Therefore, I selected "Next" and executed "dbassist" directly.
    6. dbassist
    I executed:
    dbassist
Problem: I got the following error:
    "JNLS Execution:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException
Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please
    check your Oracle installation."
Workaround: Press "OK" and ignore the error.
    7. dbassist (cont.)
    I selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
Copy existing database files from the CD
    Global Database Name: cprtest.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest
Problem: I got the following error:
"CD-ROM drive not detected on this system.
    Database not created."
(Note: I've been running the installation scripts from the
CDROM drive this entire time. "df" shows the CDROM drive
mounted on /mnt/cdrom. "ls /mnt/cdrom" works too.)
Workaround: Abort (which generated the additional error: "Unable
to create database. DBCA-00003: No CD-ROM drive detected.") and
run dbassist again, this time using different parameters.
    8. dbassist, again
I executed "dbassist" again and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and iM demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest2.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest2
    Create database now
Problem: I got the following error:
    "ORA-01012: not logged on"
    Workaround: Try, try again.
    9. dbassist, one last time
Executed "dbassist" once more and selected the following options:
    Create database
    Typical
    Create new database files
    Hybrid
    Concurrently connected users: 5
Options: Oralce interMedia, Oralce JServer, and interMedia
    demos
    Global Database Name: cprtest3.parkrussell.com
    SID: cprtest3
    Output creation script
Then, I executed (from the "oracle" Unix account):
    cd /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/install
    setenv ORACLE_SID cprtest3
    ./sqlcprtest3.sh
Problem: I got the following output:
"Oracle Server Manager Release 3.1.5.0.0 - Production
    (c) Copyright 1997, Oracle Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

    8> 9> CREATE DATABASE "cprtest3"
    ORA-01012: not logged on
    SVRMGR> Disconnected."
    Workaround: Beats me.
    10. sqlplus
I attempted to execute sqlplus, but got the following error
    message:
    "/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus: Permission denied."
The execute bit was not set.
    Workaround: I executed:
    chmod a+x /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/sqlplus
    sqlplus
I gave up for now... there were just too many things wrong with
this installation, starting with the very first command I was
    supposed to execute (./runInstaller).
I can't fathom why Oracle's installation script has so many bugs.
Am I just doing something terribly wrong?
    Please help.

I'm using enlightenment version 0.15.5-41, which is more recent
than the 0.15.5-37 version (containing the Oracle installer
patch) that you recommended. Unfortunately, it fails when using
    this version.
I also tried installing Oracle using twm, with enlightenment
    disabled. This didn't help either.
Furthermore, the errors that I'm encountering in the OUI are
not just toward the end of the installation. They happen from
the very beginning, right after I enter "./runInstall", and
continue every step of the way.

  • Error:  "Could not complete your request because of a program error" (photoshop CS2 9.0.2 on MAC OSX

Today I started my program (photoshop CS2 9.0.2) and opened a JPG file. When I went to print the file the program crashed and closed. When I restarted the program and went to open the file I got this error message, "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
I have tried several different file types/sizes and all result in the same error message since the program crashed. It will not open any file I try to open. As I indicated above I am using Photoshop CS2 9.0.2 it is on a MAC with OSX 10.4.11.
I called Adobe and the Rep directed me to Tech Note 331307 and told me to Re-create the Photoshop preferences files. Which I did and restarted the program, but when I tried to open a file (any file) I still get the same error message so it doesn't appear to be the preferences.
Does anyone have any info as to what the problem may be and how to correct it.
    Thanks

Thanks for the response. OK... This is the first day I have been able to get back to the problem.
My system I am running Photoshop on is a Power Mac G4, AGP Graphics ATY Rage 128Pro chip set 16MB VRAM LCD 1280x1024 32-bit color, 500MHz, 1.75GB of memory, 1 MB L2 Cache, 100 MHz Bus Speed. I had installed the latest security update and repaired the permissions the day the problem started.
Now to day I started the system and went in and created a Guest Account. I logged into the guest account and started Photoshop. Low and behold it worked just fine. So I logged out of guest and logged into my main user account And started Photoshop. Wouldn't you know it.... It works just fine. I can open any file I want with now problems.
I got to thinking after I had done all of this that I wished I had tried to open a file in Photoshop today prior to creating the guest account to see if it still had the problem in my main user account.
I did not change anything else on the system and all seems to work fine now. So at his point I am really not sure what the problem was.
Again thanks for taking the time to respond to this issue.

  • Download error in (osx) adobe desktop app (corrupted download link).

Here is a discription of the problem. Please consider that some of the wording might not be correct, as I do have to translate the error message from German into English.
Using OSX 10.9.2, when clicking inside the adobe desktop app (top of the screen bar) on the tap "apps", the following screen (screenshot) appears, which states, translated from top to bottom:
    download error
    download error. Please contact support.
    (link) contact support
(link/button) download creative cloud -> This button unfortunatly leads to the following error page "http://www.adobe.com/special/errorpages/404.html"
All apps, like Bridge, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. are installed and work just fine. So no problem here. I seem however unable to redownload the desktop app (in order to reinstall). As stated above the provided link inside the desktop app itself is coruppted and within the (online) web-based download centre (user logged in) I am only adviced to use the desktop app. This is a dead end and I do not know what to make of this error, let alone solving it. Please help!

I am sorry Romsinha but this doesn't really help.
I already restarted the desktop app and while I am obviously online and connected the problem (error message) remains the same. Information within the "home" tap is recieved/loaded  (little blue spinning wheel) stating that various apps recently have been updated. Yet the same loading wheel within the "apps" tap results in an error. My best guess is that some internal link within the app is corrupted, leading to a source on a server that can not be reached.
    UPDATE
I clean uninstalled adobe creative cloud as discribed in the article you provided (using the cleaner tool) and even uninstalled the browser plugin. After downloading and reinstalling creative cloud the problem however remains the same. "Apps" tap still shows the same problem. "Home" tap now displays the following:

  • Adobe CC with OSX server

We used the Adobe Creative Suite for a long time in a situation where users login through on open directory osx server.
It worked fine until we started to use Adobe Creative Cloud. We use the Enterprise version.
Computers are very slow now, especially Indesign crashes a lot and can sometimes not even be opened anymore.
Has anybody experienced the same problems?
    Regards,
    Martin

    Martin,
Have you made any progress on this issue or found out anymore about running CC in a server environment? I am researching the same thing now and can't find straight answers.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

  • When i login to my banks online access point a new browser is opened and it takes up the full 27" display. ca i restrict the size of web browser screen used by tme online banking service?  imac 27" OSX snow leopard 10.6.8

Intel iMac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I logon to bank via its internet portal and next screen takes up all 27" display.
Can this be controlled in any way or do I just put up with it, it is really annoying.

Thank you for your response. Whew...i omitted to say I use Firefox... tried to logon using Safari... same
result Installed Chrome ...same thing Installed Opera... this browser actually has in its Preferences menu
the capacity to set JavaScript Options under the Conent submenu... DISALLOWED  all of resizing of windows,
moving of windows and ability of script to hide menu bar ... this fixes the screen to available browser size...
so my issue has at least this resolution. Thank you Flet Cheryl

  • Mail app deleted and reinstall wont open, says not compatible with OSX

i accindetally deleted my mail app and emptied the trash, when I tried to reinstall from the startup disk, it installs but wont open, saying that the version of mail is not compatible with the version of OSX (10.5.8)

The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
There is no downloadable version of Mail.app - it comes with the operating system i.e. on your install disks.

  • Web-Disk on OSX 10.9 Give me this error: "Finder got an error: Network file permission error."

Previously I was using OSX 10.8 and Web Disk was working great.
Since I upgraded to OSX 10.9 Web Disk Dont Attach to my compputer and give me this ERROR:
FInder got an error: Network file permission error.
When I got this ERROR first time I searched GOOGLE and found this link: http://cammodude.blogspot.no/
    And I did:
To force all connections to be SMB1:
    Open A terminal window
paste in the following line followed by the return key(should be all on one line):
    echo "[default]" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf; echo "smb_neg=smb1_only" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
    What the command does:
Creates a file called nsmb.conf  in your  home directory at the path ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf.
Adds directives to force SMB connections to use the SMB1 protocol.  This is slower but stable.
Then I could use Web Disk on OSX 10.9 after executing this command in Terminal.
But now I restarted my Macbook and now Im NOT able to connect to Web Disk and get the same ERROR.
FInder got an error: Network file permission error
After trying 100 times it attaches 1 time but then show this ERROR:
    Can't get <<class cdis>> "my.server.com/2078" of application "Finder".
If this happen then I can see the files in Finder and see the Contents and Size of files but if I open a PHP file in BBEdit then it shows BLANK.. But actually it is NOT blank.
Now Im stuck How can I solve this? All help is highly appericated..
    Thank you so much...

    Hi,
Make sure to chmod the app, something like this :
    chmod -Rf 777  secure_site_WebDisk.app
(in my case the CPanel provided the app for my OSx version.)
