OSX V10.3.9 DVD Player cannot be opened

My IMac CRT has a slot load CD-RW. I recently got a Pikaone firewire DVD+-RW dual drive. I would like to watch DVD's on my iMac with it. I have checked in Applications and I have DVD Player 3.2 installed but when I try and open DVD Player I get an error message "The item cannot be opened. It may be disabled or not installed." I have run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions. I have tried using Pacifist to open the DVD Package but I get the message "Unknown error occured while processing the file DVD Player" . I have loaded my Panther discs and used Pacifist to try and install DVD Player again (with my firewire DVd plugged in in case the DVd Player needs to see a DVD drive when installing) but Pacifist tells me it doesn't need to install DVD Player as it already exists. What can I do next. My Panther discs are upgrade only, my OS X full install is Jaguar. (I tried using Jaguar with Pacifist but got same result - DVD player already exists.) Thanks

That's what I originally thought but apparently if you have a firewire DVD player it should work. I have just viewed a post on the iMac CRT forum where the user had the same problem as me but using Pacifist to extract and install DVD Player fixed the problem. I have tried this. When I 'get info' about my DVD player application (as installed) it says " Owner name root" "Group name admin" "Permissions drwxvwxv-x". Does this give anyone any clues?

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

DVD player quits before opening

Further questions:
How do you uninstall DVD-player? I tried to delete the DVD-player application icon, then i tried to reinstall DVD-player with the DVDupdate file i downloaded, and it tells me that the software is allready installed. Which files do i have to delete?
Does the OSX install CD reinstall DVD-player and not just iDVD?
How can i install JUST DVD-player from the OSX install disc and not every application there is?

If you have upgraded to Windows 7 then it is happening due to driver problem as Compaq Presario F750US is not in the upgradable list.
To solve the problem you can initiate the windows update process and make sure all updates are uinstalled. Windows update may find the correct drivers and fix the problem.
If this doesnt work then i would recommend to perform a clean windows 7 upgrade again by following the steps in the link below. It'll help you to upgrade sequentially and may fix the issue.

if i put in the dvd nothing happens, how do i get it to play when no menu opens up?

If the DVD plays when you open Apple's DVD Player application and hit play, and you want the application to always open, go to Apple menu -> System Preferences CDs & DVDs to change the default application to open DVDs. If it doesn't show up at all, see this tip on making it visible at least in the Finder:

DVD Player won't open in Full Screen Mode

I'm trying to run an unattended DVD during our opening hours and have everything set up to run automatically except for this.
I've checked all the appropriate boxes in the DVD player preferences (Open in Full Screen mode, start DVD upon player opening, etc.), but still no joy. Even if it's in full screen mode when it shuts down it will open in minimized format.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does it work then when you insert a DVD?
I will if I insert the DVD, but the way I have it set the computer shuts down at the end of the day and the DVD stays in the tray. When the computer starts up the next day (automatically through the Energy Saver schedule) it will begin to play, but always in the reduced size.

CD/DVD player won't open 1 CD

My CD/DVD player works well except for 1 CD. It will not open it or eject it. I put the CD in, it spins, but no disk pops up on my screen.
I can't eject it using my computer, or even by hitting the eject button on my DVD player. I have to unplug the DVD player, plug it back in,
then quickly hit the eject button to eject the cd.   The cd works on the computer at the library, they use windows, it was made on my old
PC with windows XP. It has a lot of important files I would like to save to my computer and email. Let me know if there is a way to fix this.

- First try cleaning the CD and drive. For drive use a cleaning disk.
- Next, try another optical drive and copy to suitable media.
Not infrequently some drives have trouble reading burned disks on other the the drive they were burned one.

Apple DVD player does not open a DVD burnt in DVD in Studio Pro 4

After I burn a DVD in SP4 and I insert the dvd player in my Apple Power Mag G5, the dvd just gets rejected. When I play it in a dvd player or a regular pc it plays? Any idea why this is happening?

After burning DVD, DVD player cannot play main menu

Hi all,
I created a project with a main menu with several links to submenus in Encore. When i take a preview it all looks great. However after burning the DVD, the DVD reader is unable to lanch the CD to it's master main menu (set as first play) and after a long time searching, it starts one of the submenus. There i have a link back to the main menu, but it doesn't seem to work.
I tried this on several DVD players but all has the same problem. I also create a DVD folder on HD, there it works.
I'm pretty sure my DVD burner works fine. Could it be that Encore is using too heavy compression (the avi file is 29Gig and fits on 1 DVD) that can not be use for let's say cheaper version of DVD players? (2 years old).
If not, any other idea where the problem could be ??

you were absolutely right. I was either suspecting the large avi file to be to heavily compressed or my dvd burner but NO...i just bought some TDK 16 DVD-R and the whole thing was solved. Saves me a lot of trouble, no new DVD-R, no new software.... tx mate :)

Copying/burning a dvd, won't play in a dvd player

Before my disk drive was replaced I could take a dvd, copy it and burn it to a disc (i.e., make a copy for myself), ad it would pla in my dvd player
Since then when I make a copy of something and burn it, it won;t play in ant DVD player. Will play onthe computer though

Musicwind is right, there's no way to do what you describe without third-party tools. A commercial DVD, like what you'd be using in a DVD player, cannot be copied using the Finder or Disk Utility, due to copy protection issues. Are you using something like Handbrake to rip the DVD, or is this not a commercial DVD that you're copying?

"open dvd player" changes to "ignore" automatically. why?

my DVD player do not open automatically when DVD video is inserted. In the system preference->CDs/DVDs->"When you insert a DVD", I choose open dvd player and it change to ignore immediately every time.
I tried to delete file "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and restart the mac. no help at all.

Apple DVD Player will not launch

I have a B/W G3 Tower/Desktop as well as a G3 PowerBook (black laptop). Both run OS 9.2.2, QT 5.0.2, and Apple DVD Player v1.2.
When I try to launch the DVD Player on the tower, I receive the following on a pop-up window:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because it cannot find the required hardware. Try reinstalling Apple DVD Player. (204)"
The following pops up when I try to launch the DVD Player on the G3 PowerBook laptop:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because the required hardware was not found. If you have another application open that uses sound or video, quit that application and open Apple DVD Player again. If you are using a PowerBook that requires a DVD-Video PC Card, make sure the PC card is properly installed in the appropriate slot. (21)"
Both used to work but for some reason have abruptly stopped. I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Speech is turned off and I don't have any other video or DVD apps open.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you may need to reinstall your operating system because it sounds like you dvd rom driver is damaged but there is a way around this to
go to google and search for a program called patch burn this application will reinstall a fress driver for your cd dvd rom drive but unknown if this will even work because if the file is currupted you may end up locking out the cd drive driver and your cd drive will stop working in os x and you will need to reinstall the operating system
but try patch burn first

DVD-player quits seconds after launching

Further questions:
How do you uninstall DVD-player? I tried to delete the DVD-player application icon, then i tried to reinstall DVD-player with the DVDupdate file i downloaded, and it tells me that the software is allready installed. Which files do i have to delete?
Does the OSX install CD reinstall DVD-player and not just iDVD?
How can i install JUST DVD-player from the OSX install disc and not every application there is?

DVD Player suddenly stops recognizing and playing homemade DVDs

The DVD Player in our G5 has suddenly stopped recognizing and playing some home made movies on DVD from several friends. These discs played just fine before, but now we get a message that says "supported disc not available".
I've got the latest version of DVD Player 4.6.5. Why would it suddenly stop reading all these DVDs? Thanks for any ideas or help. Bob Krist

My experience/opinon:
Without blaming Apple, it is a DigitalRightsManagment
problem, Apple is obligated to fullfill. You will
find that your homemade DVD plays fine on any
ordinary PC or even annother MAC-environment, just
not on your own.
As of Mac-OS-X.46(5 not quite sure ) Support for
UDF-Format ceased,
I believe to have read somewhere. So your DVD is
mounted, but does'nt
show up on the desktop.
I am using OSX 10.4.7 (Build 8J135) DVD Player 4.6.5 (Framework 4.6.6)
Home-made video DVD-Rs work fine. DVD player starts when a disk is inserted. The disk shows up on desktop. Get Info and Disk Utility show UDF (Universal Disk Format). Finder shows the VIDEO_TS folder, .VOB files, etc. Get Info's Preview window will even play the .VOB files.
So, UDF read support is still in OSX 10.4.7 OSX has never had UDF write support except for iDVD.
I personally record movies from TV, legally. And my
solution to that problem is to create a Disk-Image,
that I burn on a data-disc, and I don't use
DVD-Player.
DVD Imager <http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html> will create UDF disk image files from VIDEO_TS folders. When you burn these with Disk Utility they will play in standalone DVD players and in Macs. They will start Apple's DVD Player when inserted.
Toast can also create UDF disks.
If you create non-UDF disks (e.g. with Disk Utility), most standalone DVD players will not play them and Apple's DVD player will not start automatically when the DVDs are inserted. You can still play them with Apple's DVD Player by using "Open DVD Media" from its "File" menu and choosing the VIDEO_TS folder.

Imovie creating DVD to read on my DVD player
