OSX/WinXP network setup problem

I am attempting to network my MacBook with my PC (running WinXP) and, despite reading all of the pertinent Mac Help articles and several online tutorials, can't seem to catch a break. They are plugged into the same router, and both access the internet.
On the PC, I've set the main drive to "share" and used the "set up a network" to create a workgroup. On the Mac, I've enabled Windows sharing and set Directory Access/SMB to the right workgroup.
From the PC, if I go to the workgroup, I can see the Mac, but if I try to open it, I get an error saying that I "might not have permission" and that "the network path was not found" (I don't get prompted to log in or anything). On the Mac, if I open a finder window and select "Network", a folder with the name of the workgroup shows up, but there's nothing in it.
I've tried every combination of IPs, computer names, and share names I can think of, and they still won't acknowledge each other's presence. What am I missing?
Thanks!

On a computer that is part of a network domain, a user must be a member of at least one group. The permissions and rights granted to a group are assigned to its members."...

  • HP PSC 2510 all-in-one network setup problems

At the end of a long weekend of work, I've finished setting up my psc 2510 on a new wireless network. I use Tiger on two of my machines and Panther on the others. So I've posted advice over in the Tiger support forum, and I'm going to post the same instructions over here. (Moderators: I thought about just posting a link here to my other post, but I want to make sure that the search engine picks up this posting if someone does a search here.)
I have four machines total, two of them running OS X 10.4, the others running 10.3.9.
    1. Start by hooking the printer up to a wired (ethernet) network. Print out a network config page (setup, 6, 1) when the printer shows its blue "networked" light. Dial the printer's URL into your web browser and enter the new network's info into the printer's embedded web server. If you get everything right, when you turn off the printer, disconnect the ethernet cable, and turn on the printer, you'll get that blue "networked" light after a minute or so.
If you don't see the light, print out another config page and check the "Wireless Status": "Scanning" means that the printer's having trouble connecting to the network. Your best bet is to temporarily turn off all wireless encryption/security and reconfigure the printer's connection. Once you have a connection, then try adding various sorts of security/encryption. In my experience, the printer doesn't do well if the SSID of the network isn't being broadcast or with a list of acceptable MAC addresses. In my old network I managed to get the printer running with WPA security, but this time I had to settle for WEP 128 bit security.
The Wireless Status will read "Disabled" if the printer has a USB cable or Ethernet cable attached. This means you need to unplug all cables (and possibly turn the printer off and on) to enable the wireless card. If the Wireless Status is "Disabled" even though you have no cables attached, you have probably reset the printer to factory defaults (see #2 below).
Things to watch for: is the default gateway of the printer the same as that of your new network? I had to change my new network's gateway to "192.168.1.1 addressing" from "10.0.1.1 addressing" because the printer was expecting "192 etc." after being hooked up to a Linksys router for several years.
Also, you may find you need to give the printer a self-assigned (manual) IP address, if other computers, once linked to the printer, lose printing and/or scanning capabilities a few days or weeks later. This can be set in the printer's web access server, but make sure to assign the printer an IP address that's compatible with the range of IPs that your router's is leasing to the network. I'm a novice at this network stuff, so sorry if I'm being vauge on this point.
    2. It's possible I could have saved myself a lot of trouble setting up the printer for the network if I had reset the printer's network settings to factory defaults right at the start. But if you decide to follow HP's instructions and reset network settings to factory defaults, BEWARE: the printer's embedded web server can’t for some reason configure the printer to re-enable wireless networking. And the latest download of the hp all-in-one installer doesn’t contain the network config utility found on the original HP installation CD. (On this old CD, the config utility isn’t part of the install package, but it is invoked automatically during the installation process.)
SOLUTION: Run the PSC 2500 Series installer found on the HP CD, preferably from a Mac running an system older than Tiger. It might also be possible to avoid running the installer and just run the config utility.
From this point on, I'll assume you've managed to get the printer on your network. Here's how to get all your computers configured to use the psc's printer and scanner functions.
HP tech support advised me to download the latest installer/print driver and use that to install and configure the psc 2150. This is good advice, insofar as the old HP Director software has a memory leak and the old HP Scan was prone to crashing whenever the 2510 went into Energy Saving mode. But if your mac isn't running OX X 10.4 (Tiger), you'll find that your system doesn't seem to recognize the new print drivers installed with by the download. This is especially a problem if you follow HP tech support's advice and delete a bunch of files prior to upgrading from the old installer to the new one, as (I suspect) it was at this point that I deleted working printer drivers from my Macs running Mac OS 10.3.9.
So if you're running 10.3.9 or earlier, I advise you not to delete any files and to configure your computer for the print and scanner functions in the opposite order that HP advises.
Most important: through trial and error I discovered that the HP Setup application isn't able to configure the printer if more than one user is logged in (Fast User Switching!). (This is a particularly tricky error to diagnose as the only symptom is that the setup app keeps claiming that it "can't find device" even though in the stage just prior it had successfully detected it!) Log out all other users, then proceed with the following steps:
    1. Go to Print Center (called Print Setup Utility in Tiger), delete your old psc printer (if any) and click "add printer". The psc should show up in HP IP printing or under Rendezvous (called Bonjour in Tiger), and when you click on it, the Add Printer utilty should automatically find the "HP All-in-one" printer driver. If something's gone wrong, though, you may get the message “Print Driver not installed”. That's what happened to me after I deleted files (see above).
SOLUTION: Run the PSC 2500 Series installer found on your original HP CD. When it finishes, it will start the HP setup assistant, in the course of which you'll be directed to go to the Print Center and add your printer. Do so.
    2. Once you've added the printer successfully, run the latest HP installer, a download from the HP website. You should be able to skip the step where it asks you to add the printer, as you did this in step one.
    3. Finally, since you didn't delete any files earlier, be sure to remove HP Director from your dock and from your Startup items (Login items in Tiger) by opening Mac System Prefs - Accounts - Startup/Login Items. HP Director has a memory leak. And it is superceded by the newer HP Device Manager when you download and run the latest HP installer. You should find the new HP Device Manager in your dock after step 2 (above).

  • Wireless network setup problems [SOLVED]

    Hi!
I'm trying to set up the wireless network here, and have been for the last couple of days. I'm following the Arch Linux Wireless Setup guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup and I've come to the point where I should have a connection, but I don't. I can't get an IP from dhcpcd and setting it to static doesn't help me. Wired network with dhcp works fine, but I can't connect to the router on 192.168.1.1 as stated by my ISP or any other address, I shouldn't have to as the essid and key seems to work but it's suspicious.
Be advised: This is the first time I'm in contact with wireless networking, I've been using wired since the dawn of time.
Running Arch i686 on a Compaq CQ60 laptop
    Router is a Xavi 5258
These are the steps I've made:
    # lspci
07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
    // After installing madwifi:
    # modprobe ath5k
// It's down from the start so:
    # ifconfig wlan0 up
// Set up essid and key as stated by my ISP
    # iwconfig wlan0 essid "B2_private_AF" key s:B2_private_AF
    // Check for access points:
    # iwlist wlan0 scan

// Very well then, let's set it up static style

    # route add default gw 192.168.1.1
// This results in nothing other than breaking all connections until I shut down wlan0.
    I have some thoughts:
Is the key right? How do you know if it's wrong?
Why can't I connect to the router on any of the standard IP:s nor the one given to me by my ISP? Hardware error?
Is my eth0 dhcp connection in some way conflicting? I've tried the whole set up from a fresh boot with the wire disconnected.
Have I confused something in the stage of installing and modprobing madwifi -> ath5k? Seems like the card is supported but I don't know how far into the set up process you can go with an unsupported card.
Heh-heh, that's my post, sorry for the length of it but I don't want to leave something out that could've been useful in troubleshooting.
Thanks in advance for any help, be it simple pointers or complete walkthroughs.
Edit: There was something, somewhere about country codes, but it said it's probably not an issue. Could it cause any trouble? I live in Sweden.

    I solved it!
I had to change my eth0's IP to 192.168.1.2 before I could access the modem!
The key was not at all the one my ISP specified, it was a 10-digit number. NICE.
After I set wlan0 up with that key dhcpcd worked flawlessly and I'm writing this post through my wireless network!
Now, how do I mark the thread as solved?

  • Wireless Network Setup Problem

ok so i bought a d-link DI-624 (wireless G "Xtreme" router) i set it up no problem yesterday set the name of the network, password and opened a couple ports for a torrent downloading app called "Transmission" (which is great btw :P).. n e ways i put my macbook to sleep and woke up this morning opened the lid and it still had my network there but now i cant go to n e websites. i used the network diagnostics and it told me that it found my wireless network but it thinks my homepage "www.apple.ca" was typed wrong thus making it not able for it to test whether or not it could view a webpage. iv run out of ideas to get it working. iv restarted the router, modem and macbook with no dice. any suggestions?
oh and i forgot to mention iv got the wireless router hooked up to another router (D-Link DI-604) just for the time being as i havent been able to disconnect one of the connections (important download being done) so its just for the time being

im leaving to go on vacation for 10 days so ill get back to ya then with an answer.. iv just got my macbook plugged directly into the DI-604 right now.. my wireless one i put away for now while im packing and stuff.. ill get back to this when i get back.. need to get it running :P i got a taste for how good wireless is with a laptop for one day and now im tied down with this cable again oh well ill be back soon enough

  • First time network setup problems

I have setup my first network using the wrt54gs I am able to connect to the internet and ping my self on one computer. But on the other computer I am not able to ping myself. the IP address is 192.168.1.101 could someone try pinging me and tell me if they have better luck. i was told to use the DMZ/portforwarding on one computer so I can play battlefield. Does any one have any Ideas to fix this because it is preventing printer and file sharing on the network.

On the pc that you can not ping try doing a internal loop back on that pc.  To do that go into the command prompt on that pc and type in ping 127.0.0.1 and hit enter.  You should get 0% loss and if you get any loss then that NIC is defective or you have TCP/IP seveices turned off.  To check that go into the nic's propertise and make sure TCP is enabled.

  • Can't connect to wifi network - password problem?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro C2D 2.16, but I can't get it to connect via airport to my wifi network at home. When I use the network setup assistant, i'm prompted to enter the WPA password, but then i get a message saying "password invalid"? If I try connecting through the Internet Connect window, it says: "there was an error joining the airport network"?
After reading through the forums a bit, I tried changing the WPA password, changing to WEP, and even using the open setting, but my MBP still won't connect to my DSL router (Zoom X6 router). My other Windows laptop connects fine.
This is my first Mac, and I'm a bit clueless regarding networking as well, so any advice is appreciated. BTW, I've got OSX 10.4.8 installed.
    Macbook Pro 2.16 Mhz C2D Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I solved it! Well, not really - I just did a bit more searching on the forums and found someone else with the same problem - solution: Update the firmware's router, and now my MBP can connect properly, with WPA2.

  • WiFi MIDI network setup is terribly slow

    Hi all
    What i have:
    1. macmini (late 2012)
    2. ipad 4
What i need - i need to create WiFi MIDI network for some music creation process.
    The problem:
When i open MIDI Studio window and then click on Network - is nothing happened. But MIDI Studio is no responsive. ( i see color-wheel cursor)
    This is long-long-long time.
Then it open window where i can setup network. I press connect to iRom (it my iPad) and waiting again. 5 or 12 seconds before it connect..
    The question:
How can i do that process faster as possible ? Why MIDI Studio all times try to find something.
This is the same iPad and Same macmini all times when i run that. But all times it waiting something, and i waiting also.
How can i speed up that? May be this is WiFi problem and i need some cable?
    Thanks!

    Is problem partially solved:
This is occur because OSX have a two connections in one time:
    1. - wired Ethernet connected to router
    2. - WiFi for connecting to iPad
When i disable Ethernet - the MIDI Network setup work really fast.
But now i have another question: How i can use both Ethernet + WiFi, without this terribly stuck ?

  • New Airport Extreme N wireless network setup questions (WDS, D-Link)

I have finally been able to set up my Airport Extreme N network after numerous attempts over the last few weeks. I was getting a very weak signal in front of the house where my wife's G4 is connected wireless to an old Airport card and where all the systems (XBOX 360; Wii and PS3) are also wirelessly hitting the network.
The current configuration is as follows: In the office in the back of the house I have an Airport Extreme N basestation connected to the cable modem and have three workstations (One Mac and two PCs) wired to it. I set up a WDS network, so I set up the Airport Expresses as remotes. In the living room I have another Airport Extreme N basestation (as a remote as well) that is hooking up to the XBOX 360, Wii and PS3. I have enabled WEP security (not effecting the XBOX 360 since it is now "wired"). Here is the weird thing - I have a PC laptop with a D-Link Xtreme N card ( DWA-652) that cannot connect to the network. I enter the WEP password but it does not connect. Am I missing something on the basestation setup? Do I need to add the MAC address of the card anywhere. When I use the laptop's built in wireless it connects with no problem. By creating a WDS network did I disable the n functionality of the base station(s)? I am a lttle condused.
Also, prior to going to an all Apple wireless network setup, I bought the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655). I was regretfully about to return it to Best Buy but I had an idea which may or may not work. I know that the D-Link does not support WDS but if I was to set it up as the main router and added the "main" Airport basestation as a wired bridge could I maintain the WDS network? The reason I ask this is because I would love to keep the gigabit for the wired machines in the office. Also, I am wondering if the D-Link notebook card is incompatible with the Airport network.
All I know is that I have spent alot of money and sleepless nights just trying to set this network up but thankfully Best Buy has a thirty day return policy so I will return what I can't use.
I appreciate any help and advice anyone can give me.
    Thanks.

    Hello!
I have noticed that some manufacturers (Linksys and possibly D-LINK) only accept upper-case WEP keys only.
This drove me nuts when trying to integrate a Linksys PC PCMCIA card into my old "g" network.
As far as using WEP, it's bad and broken; but I understand that your choice of security is limited to the devices that you are trying to network.
For what it's worth, I have my network set up with the AEBS 'n' connected to my Cable Modem, with one of the ports going to a gigabit switch for my wired network. I then have two AirTunes set up as WDS extensions for music & Internet delivery to two separate areas. The AEBS 'n" serves up DHCP and routing for the entire network.
It works quite well; I get 54 mbits/sec for the two WDS AirTunes, and 145 mbits/sec to one of my ATV's. My gigabit wired machines see data rates of 15-27 MBytes/sec (depending on the type of transfer).
    Good luck!

  • Windows network setup: can't share on network and have each system access internet directly

Windows network setup would not let me set up my network so that I could both:see my other computers on the network and have them both connect directly to the internet. It wanted to set one up as a server.
Is it dangerous to arrange it that way?
If not, several people have told me it should be no problem to set up my network so that my computers can see each other and share, and yet still ahve access to the internet. I think this is enabled through DHCP?
Would someone mind lending me a hand?
    I have a BEFW11S4v2

  • ISE v1.1.1 Network Setup Assistant errors

    Hello Everyone.
I've been having some difficulties with ISE v1.1.1 while setting up and testing the SISE course. It's setup so that BYOD users can self-service a guest account with the ISE and register their device. After that the Network Setup Assistant (NSA) is supposed to push the certificates to the system and make it able to access the network. My problems are two fold in is situation. Firstly I have a second interface setup without a gateway for RDP access that the NSA seems to select everytime for the interface it wants to setup, I've bypassed this for the time being with direct access to the machine. Is there a way to direct the NSA to the correct interface? Secondly Once the NSA is running, it will push the RA certificate to the machine and then immediately goto an error that the NSA cannot setup the network. I cannot find an error code on the NSA agent nor can I find a log to help me pinpoint the error the NSA encountered. Any ideas or help I can recieve with this will be appricated.
As far as I can tell the cwa and nsp redirects are working as intended. The Switch for Dot1x downloads the correct dACLs and the authorization profiles are placed correctly
    Thank you.

Open Java Control Panel, click the Advanced tab, go to Perform certificate revocation checks on and select Do not check

  • Cisco Network Setup Assistant Unable to install the certificate on Android KitKat

    Greetings,
I'm having issues with deploying the CA. Although the Cisco app fails, the user cert (but no CA) appears to install and is accessible during wifi setup. I am running the latest version of Cisco Network Setup Assistant 1.2.42. The phone is running Android KitKat 4.4.4, not rooted, running stock T-Mobile rom. I'm able to authenticate with the guest side, and get as far as Installing Certificates... Reference the screen shots attached.
Error message cisco Network Setup Assistant: "Unable to install the certificate. Exit the application and run it again to continue to the installation."
I have ran the application several times, it keeps returning to this same message.
After failure of the Cisco app, I noticed there is a certificate manager with CA cert and key, and than subsequently one new key continues to loop after until I cancel (also in screenshots).
I have tried decryption, removing all security, and clearing credentials, yet the problem persists. Any help is appreciated.

  • T41 has Network Controller problem

I was given a T41 2373-7JU that I loaded with XP Pro. My problem is it will not  connect to the internet via it's browser. In Device Manager it shows a Network Controller problem and I've been unable to correct this no matter how many different drivers I've tried. Also, how do I tell if there's an internal  wireless card inside?  It did connect to the internet earlier today using my USB adaptor but now I can't even do that anymore. I've tried a dozen or so solutions without any success so where should I go from here?

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Following are the drivers you need for Ethernet and wifi card (and yes, as per support page there's an internal card installed in your system):-
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62922
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-42683
To install the drivers successfully, you need to run the .exe setups from C:\Drivers.... for each device after the first setup completes.
For ethernet, the setup is in C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\Win32 and for wifi C:\DRIVERS\WLLANCSC.
    Hope this helps.
