OSX won't reboot if external hard drive is connected

Hi I've had my Lacie 500gig Big Disk for a while now, but just recently I've been having reboot problems. I just get the light grey screen at startup, but no Apple logo or anything....just stuck at grey. If I disconnect my external hard drive though, the Mac reboots just fine. Any thoughts on what the problem is? I've run "Verify Disk" from Disk Utility and have no problems. Anything else I can do to diagnose the problem?
FYI, the external drive is partitioned in 2 parts: 250gig for full backup (using .mac Backup) and the other 250gig is where my iTunes Library lives.
Chris

"No repair was neccessary"
Of course I had to quit iTunes before I ran the "Repair Disk", otherwise I get an error saying "could not unmount disk". I assume that's because of iTunes and the iTunes Library being located on the external.

my notebook won't recognize my external hard drive.  I can safely remove it, but when i look for it on my computer its not there?

Disable Time Machine from System Preferences.
Choose Select disk button, remove the old TM backup disk and add the new one.

    Hi
After upgrading to osx 10.9.3, my external hard drive was not able to mount, but it can be mounted without issue in osx 10.6, how do I solve it? it was formatted by disk utility.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Why my new iMac won't read my external hard drive?

Why my new imac won't read my external hard drive??

    Liz,
Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it.  I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer.  have a great day.

  • Using an external hard drive to connect the camera to the Mac Book Pro

I am about three weeks away from a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. In the meantime, I am logging and capturing from my Canon AX HI through my external hard drive. I am not super amazed at the quality of the image, it's noisy.
I am using HDV tapes, and I don't beleive the lighting should be causing the issue.
Does anyone know if using the external hard drive to connect the camera to my Mac Book Pro is compromising the quality of the image? Can I expect a beautiful strong image on a lap top?
    Thanks for any help.

There is ZERO quality loss when you capture via firewire. It is a digital transfer of files...that's it. The issue you have is that you are trying to judge the quality of your image based on what you see with your computer monitors, and that is simply the LAST thing you should be doing.
And since this is HDV, the only way to monitor that is with an HD card or I/O device, and an HD monitor or TV. Like the Matrox MXO2 mini or AJA I/O Express mini and HDTV.

  • HT1408 How do I transfer files from an external hard drive formerly connected to a PC to my new iMac computer?

How do I transfer document and photo files from an external hard drive formerly connected to my old PC into my new iMac computer?

There are several different ways to move data from your old PC to your iMac, including Manually Migrating at > Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
If you just want to move file's from your External HD, simply plug it into your iMac and drag your doc's to your Documents Folder and Import your photos into iPhoto.

  • New to Mac :), OSX 10.4.3 won't recognize my external hard drive!!

    Please help,
I just bought a new mac (powermac g5 2ghz, 1gb ram) and i have two external hard drives plugged in and they are not showing up anywhere? Do i need a specific driver? I am downloading the update for 10.4.3 (combo) even though i already have 10.4.3 because i read this might fix it, but it seems to take forever to download, in the meantime, any advice?
    Thanks in advance!
    Jana

i just read this on macfixtit and reinstalled 10.4.3 using the combo update and it worked for me.
    Solutions
Reverting to a previous version of Mac OS X Though it is a relatively tedious and time-consuming workaround, downgrading to an earlier version of Mac OS X (preferably Mac OS X 10.4.2) as described in our tutorial "Reverting to an earlier version of Mac OS X" is an almost fail-safe solution to this problem.
Re-applying the Mac OS X combo updater Despite a lack of success for some users with this workaround, re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.3 combo updater continues to resolve this issue for many.

  • Rebooting from external hard drive

I'm trying to find a suitable replacement machine for a stolen 2007 Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo, bought new in January 2007.  I need to find a compatible laptop to reboot from my backup external hard drive as I still need the old applications from original machine. What vintage of laptops are compatible? Where can I find a reputable seller?  I don't remember what OSX it was running.  If that info is on my external drive, I dont know where to find it. Someone donated a Powerbook G4 to me, but I've been told that its not compatible with an Intel machine.
    Thanks,
    Karen

I suggest a used MBP the same vintage/model as the one that was stolen.   Later models would have come with later versions of OS X and may not boot from the version on your external hard drive.
There are many good/reputable used Mac vendors ...  here are a few to get you started ...
    dvwarehouse.com
    usedmac.com
    macofalltrades.com
    themacstore.com
And lowendmac.com has a list of used Mac dealers

  • My MBP won't recognize my external hard drive

I have an external hard drive that used to work just fine on my MBP, but now it won't recognize it. When I plug it in (USB), the green light turns on the hard drive, but nothing happens on my MBP. Maybe it is recognizing but not letting me know? I did check disk utility but it's not there either.

Drives "unmounted" sometimes suffer volume structure damage or similar. Sometimes it's correctable without re-formatting the drive, but not always. Depending on whether or not it contains stuff you want to keep, I'd think you have two choices:
    1. If you don't mind losing what's on it: Reformat the drive (which will erase the contents), using Disk Utility, or just accept the "initialize" option you are offered.
    2. If you want to try to retain the drive's contents, you'll have to try to repair the disk by whatever means available to you. Disk Utility (which is part of the OS, so you own it already), DiskWarrior, and TechTool Pro may be able to detect the drive. If so, try to Repair Disk, Repair Volume Structure, etc. If the disk can't be recognized, you'll probably have to resort to the previous method.
But if this doesn't work, wait for more advice before doing anything rash, as others may think of things I didn't.

  • IMac won't boot if external hard drive running Time Machine powered on

Upon rebooting, my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, running OS X 10.5.4, locked up in a gray screen, the "gray screen of death."
At the recommendation of the Apple Tech Support rep, I turned off the iMac using the power button, and rebooted with my USB and Firewire devices removed.
The iMac boots fine with everything except my G-tech drive 1GB external hard drive running Time Machine with no partitions, attached using a Firewire 800 cable.
If the external hard drive is on, I get the interminable gray screen.
If I boot with the external hard drive powered off and then power it on after I'm at the Mac desktop, the disc image mounts normally on the desktop.
I've already repaired all disc permissions and it doesn't help.
My external hard drive has used 907 of the 931 GB true capacity. Supposedly, Time Machine removes the old files to make room for the new files.
Time Machine itself is running properly once I get my iMac booted in this peculiar way.

    Raja,
Do a SMC reset perhaps even a couple of times and see if that helps. Also in System Preferences + Startup Disk make sure the internal HD is selected.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • MacBook Air won't recognize iOmega External Hard Drive

I just bought my macbook air and I wanted to transfer my data over from my old MacBook. The MacBook died so I was using my backup. The problem is that the Air won't recognize the ext hard drive. I connected the ext hard drive to my AirPort Extreme for the migration assistant but I keep getting a connection failed message. I tried plugging in the drive to the air directly using USB but it won't recognize it at all. The drive won't mount. The drive begins spinning and the light is on so the drive does work. It always worked with my old MacBook. I did alway connect it with FireWire so could that cause a problem since I have to connect it with USB to the Air?

I had a similar issue with mine but it was because I tried to connect to an external drive that was already connected to my iMac via FW800. When I disconnected the FW cable and plugged in the USB, everything worked perfectly.

  • IMac won't shutdown when external hard drive is hooked up.

    Hello,
I have a 2011 iMac which i've loved using. I bought a Seagate goflex external harddrive so I could start using time machine. I've noticed that whenver I power my iMac down it will sit on the grey screen just before shutting off for a long time. In fact, it will not actually shut down until i unplug my external hard drive. As soon as I unplug my harddrive the mac starts thinking again and shuts down within seconds. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? Why it would do this. I now hard plug my harddrive in because of this, which is kinda of dumb since I bought it to work as a time machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, see if it opens in Safe Mode, reboot when complete, test again.

  • 10.5.8 won't detect any external hard drives

I want to update my 10.5.8 Macbook Pro which I bought in 2008.  It runs incredibly slow, and I want to reformat it before updating with Snow Leopard.  The problem is that my computer won't detect any external disc drives, so I can't back up my important files.  Is there any way to fix this, or is there something I'm missing?
I'm also wondering if I'll be able to reformat without my original OSX install disc that came with my computer, and if so, how?  Thanks in advance.

If you are going to be upgrading to OS X Snow Leopard, the installer for that should be able to format your drive for you before you do the installation.  I'm assuming that you have those CD's for your computer as you need discs to be able to ugrade to Snow Leopard.  What happens when you plug in an external drive?  Does it just not recognize the drive, or do you just not have it selected to show the drive on your desktop?  With Finder being the top window, click on the Finder Menu and select preferences > select general in the tabs at the top and then make sure that External discs is checked.
