OSX Won't Start Up????? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

So I own a G4/1.2GHz/iBook w/Tiger OSX completely updated. The other day when I started it up, when it got to my desktop, it froze. When I restarted it, it would get to the blue screen right after the grey screen with the Apple and freeze. I finally got it back to the desktop and it was fine, so I cleaned the cache memory, optimized the system, and installed new updates. I restarted it as prompted to and now my computer freezes at the startup when the Apple shows up with the gear like pre-loader. Can anyone tell me what happened with my Mac and what can I do to possibly fix this problem without buying a new Mac or something? My schooling & DJing career lie within my Mac, most of my stuff is backed up, but does no good without a computer to run on...
Doesn't even get to a point where I can get into console mode as one friend directed.

Have you tried holding the Shift key down on startup, and waiting awhile...
maybe up to 4 minutes, to see if it will boot into SafeBoot and if it tries
to and gets you to a login screen, you are almost there. After a login,
you can see if you can run the Disk Utility (in Utilities folder, see GO in
Finder menu bar to shortcut to folder, normally found in Apps folder on
hard disk drive) and run 'repair disk permissions' if it will allow.
Quit the Disk Utility and restart normally.
If you have the OS X Tiger installer disc, this is a bootable disc and
you make the computer start from the system on it by putting it into
the optical drive and then restarting, holding the C key down. This
will boot and show you the beginnings of the Installer; one of the first
screens after it starts up is a language screen. If you can see a menu
bar in the top of the window, click on some of the top items; beneath
one of them, a drop-down menu will appear with various options to do,
instead of reinstalling anything. One of these is Disk Utility. Another
is choose Startup Disk. You'd want to run Disk Utility's first aid and
choose 'repair disk' after selecting one of the icons on the left side
in that utility's window. That'd open the choices you can act on.
I usually run 'repair disk' and also look to see if the hard drive's
SMART status shows Fail or Pass (click on HDD's manuf. name.)
(Forget use of verify; just do repair disk; maybe also repair permission.
Later on, once you can start from the hard disk drive's OS, you
can repair disk permissions from that running system to fix them.)
If the Disk Utility can't 'repair disk' while the OS X installer is running
the computer and you are trying to fix the dismounted hard drive, you
may need to consider another utility. One such third party disk utility
that may attempt to repair the startup sectors on the HDD is DiskWarrior.
Another, Drive Genius, may be able to perform several tasks. There
may be one third-party utility that could do several things well, but I
don't know of any; some come close. And experience helps using them.
In some cases, a few of these disk utilities may run better from an
external FireWire enclosed hard disk drive; where a clone can be
used to boot the computer and you can attack the failed drive from
the larger volume of a big external hard disk drive with tools on it.
Being able to clone a whole healthy current system as backup helps
in restoring to a repaired hard drive or in replacing a drive when bad.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner, since it had good support and info in the
web page where it also can be downloaded from (Bombich software.)
Good luck & happy computing!

I'm trying to open Entourage and it just won't open. The "E" in the dock bounces twice then nothing. Word opens fine. Yesterday I did a software update.I have 10.4.8. I tried reinstalling Entourage but still won't open. Tried opening in Safe Mode too. No luck. Have not tried reinstalling OSX yet.
Here are the events that lead up to this--
    1) Did software update.
    2) Installed Powerpoint from disk to view a document. After install "PP" would not open. Just got the warning "The application PowerPoint shut down unexpectedly....etc, etc"
    3) Installed "TonicPoint Viewer" to view PP document.
4)Tried to open Entourage. Entourage won't open.
    5) Reinstalled Entourage from disk. Still won't open.
If someone has any ideas, please help. I have lots of business stuff I just can't afford to loose.
Also, does anyone know where the email is stored on the hard drive? I have looked and can't find anything. If I can't get Entourage to start I might be able to at least get the data.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Basically:

    Should work fine now

  • One more iBook won't start. Please help...

    Hi,
I apologise for my English from the very beginning. Be patient please...
I see from older topics that I am having a rather common problem. I just got this iBook G3 900 MHz 12' 680 Mb RAM from Ebay. It lasted 5 days (working fine) and then it suddenly died.
I have already tried all possible key combinations for PMU resets and carefully read the help page in case when a portable won't start. No good.
Here are the synthoms more in detail: The battery would not charge (it has only 1 flashing light out of four and I was warned before it died that its charge level was getting low). The ibook now don't start, even with the power adapter hooked up.
If this can help, the ring light on the adapter cord is green when the battery is on, and removing the battery turns the light to amber.
I started reading Internet discussions and it sounded an DC in-board problem, and I've already found a replacement from a friend...
    BUT...
I did a further test tonight taking the battery for an identical ibook of a friend and when I put his battery on mine, it started up and kept being up only for me to see that the battery level was getting low low low --- dead again. Now, my friend is pretty sure that his battery was at least half-charged but to me it seems very strange that my ibook would drain away all power from a battery in 10 seconds. Can it be a short circuit ???
Back on Internet, I have discovered these Apple discussions, so before beginning unscrewing the whole ibook to replace the DC-in board (I understand this is not the easiest piece to change) I wanted to have your advice on something I might have missed with my "diagnosis".
Could it be the "famous" logic board everyone is complaining about ? The ibook was bought in August 2003 so I am still eligible for the replacement. Could it possibly be ? I though that ibooks with such a problem did boot up...
Sorry. I wrote too much. Thank you in advance for any help you might be willing to give me...
    ibook G3 900 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
No problems with your English whatsoever.
Have you tried your friend's adapter with the iBook? Was your iBook plugged into the adapter when it rapidly discharged your friend's battery? It could be an adapter problem. The adapter should show green when the battery is not installed, and amber when it is — exactly the opposite of what you are seeing. The amber light is supposed to indicate that the battery is charging. The green light means that it is NOT charging. When things are working right, the green light means the battery has stopped charging because it is completely charged. When things aren't working right, it just means the battery isn't charging — for whatever reason. Since your adapter is showing the lights the opposite of what it is supposed to do, it's an indication that it may not be working right.
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input (DC-in) board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.
Your experience does not exactly match either of ours. It is my best hunch that if your adapter is not the problem, then it is the logic board and not the DC-in board at fault. However, this is not the problem covered by the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
Since you already have the extra DC-in board, if it proves not to be the adapter at fault, you may want to try installing the DC-in board, in hopes that will correct the problem.
    Good luck.

  • Laptop won't start? Please help!!!

    Hello,
When my computer was left uncharged, it died. And it wouldn't turn back on, as strangely it wouldn't charge (the light on the charger just didn't light up).So I tried and tried for a couple of days and nothing worked. I though it was my charger so I bought a new one but that wasn't the problem.
So I took it to Apple and they tried charging it at the time and it worked just fine. It magically turned on ?!!
Thus I took my laptop back today as according to the people in Apple my laptop was perfectly fine.
Today when my laptop was 100% charged I took the charger out and started watching a movie. Suddenly it died and the same thing is happening
It just won't charger. And since it won't charge it won't turn on....
    PLEASE HELP ME

Have you tried a SMC reset?

My Power Mac G5 won't start up! I turn it on and hear the start up chime, then the fan goes as usual and then it appears to be starting up - then it gets to initializing network connections (I think!) then the screen goes blue and it freezes! Hi viccilogan-
In that case, I offer a few more documents for your perusal and prior to actually being in front of the unit and able to troubleshoot.
    The following may be helpful:

  • PB won't start up please help

Hi everyone, I cant seem to get my computer to start up and I'd really appreciate some help. When I try and start my g4 PB running 10.4, instead of the normal start up chime, I get a beeping sound and the screen stays black. The status light on the front near the cd drive blinks. I shut it down, took out the battery and waited 15 minute and then it started up the OS, however it froze shorty after and gave me the "You need to restart your computer" message. When I restart it, I get the same black screen with the beeping noise and I haven't been able to do anything. It won't repsond when I try and boot from the disk or to boot in saftey mode. My OS is completely updated and the computer is not even 6 months old. Any suggestions would really help. Thanks a lot.
    Sofi

The beeping sound that you hear on startup, does it only last for a short period (ie. like one, two or three beeps)? If so it could be that the memory in your PowerBook is either unseated or has become defective. Therefore I would check that by making sure the RAM is fully and firmly seated.

  • Itunes just won't start.  Please Help!

    Hey everyone,
This is my first post here and hopefully someone can help me. When starting up itunes the windows error pops up and says we cannot process your request to start itunes whatever you were doing will be lost, do you wish to send error report, blah blah. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it numerous times and nothing happens. Ive run out of options of what to do.
Please someone help my noob @$$ out.

When you say "download", do you mean that you cannot get the iTunes installer copied from the Apple web site successfully? Or do you mean that you have the installer on your computer but that after running it, it gets part-way through but then fails?

  • My safari won't start! Please help?

I click on the safari icon and it just bounces but wont open up someone have any suggestions?
    please & thank you!
    Ima G5   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

    Hi James,
So you are running Safari Beta 3.?? now,
    SafariStand, Concierge and BookDog.
Many third party safari add on are not compatible w/ Safari 3, the
developers need to update, I am not sure if the 3 you mention are including but the behaviour of S 3 points to that there maybe an issue with them.
What I wish I could do is uninstall Safari and reinstall the latest non-beta version, which I assume is 2.0.4. But I can't find the 2.0.4 version as a stand alone program, much less an uninstaller program just for Safari. All I can find is the 3.0 beta and a 2.0.1 updater. Doesn't Apple realize that sometime Mac users need to simply reinstall one piece of software. Now I know it's probably on my Tiger install disk but that's going to take me back several versions and I have to wonder how easy that will be to upgrade.
James- The way you get Safari 2.0.4 back is to run the Uninstaller that came, with the Safari 3 beta download, that will revert your copy of Safari back to 2.0.4.
Do not use your mac when the installer is running if you decide to uninstall Beta,
If this doesn't help please post a new topic in the Safari 3 for mac forum this is the regular Safari forum.
    Good luck, keep us posted.

You may want to try this:

          (ADDRESS_LIST =
            (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dina.dhcp.2wire.com)(PORT = 1521))
)And make sure dina.dhcp.2wire.com can be solved against an IP. On the other hand, it seems like you are getting your IP from a dhcp server. Even though you could start your services, it is advisable to use a fixed IP address or have a loopback adapter properly configured, otherwise you may face configuration issues with the EM DB Control Console.

  • PowerBook G4 won't start up please help...

Hello everybody ho are you doing? Sorry for the long post I'm just in panic mode now because I can't live without my computer
Ok here's my problem, my powerbook g4 will not start up now. How did this happen? I was using safari and the the apple logo came up told me an update was available do I downloaded the update I believe it was for iPhoto, then I went to the apple button, restart. It took me to the point where you hear the tone and then gives the apple logo without the spining sign after about 3 seconds anoter screen come up reads "you need to restart your computer. Hold the power button for several seconds or press the restart button". This message is also in french and two other languages. There's also a logo in the background like a power button sign.

Because replacing the DC-In board is such a pain, be sure to test with another battery before tackling the board replacement.
Yes, the high- and low-res 1.67s use different PRAM batteries:
    Low-res PRAM battery
    High-res PRAM battery
Powerbook PRAM batteries are rechargeable. Yours is drained now because it isn't being recharged, but that doesn't mean it won't take a charge again when you get your charging system working properly. If I were you, I'd return the one you bought immediately if you can get a full refund or credit for doing so. If a full credit or refund isn't available, then return it only if it's the wrong one and useless to you. If you bought the right one, keep it, but try to diagnose the actual cause of your problem ASAP so that if you don't need a new PRAM battery, you'll still have a chance to return the one you bought before it's too late, at least for a partial credit.

  • Classic won't start up PLEASE HELP!!!

I am using OS X on a powerbook G4 and classic will not start up. THe status bar comes on but does not move, it remains in the same postion, not freezing.
I have left it for over an hour and still nothing...
Does anyone have advice on why classic is not starting up?

I don't know for sure, but it may be an extensions conflict. Did you change anything in the System Folder lately.
If you go to the Advanced tab in the System Preferences Classic panel, you should see an option to start Classic with extension off. If that works, you'll have to do some detective work to figure out which non-Apple extension is causing the problem.
If you only use Classic under Mac OS X (you don't boot directly into Mac OS 9 anymore) there are ways to optimize Classic System Folder. If you do a Google search on "optimize classic mac" you should see some web sites. The one on LowEndMac.com is here.
    http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html
You can also create a separate "for Classic under Mac OS X only" System Folder (and put it anywhere, even on a disk image), if you want to keep a bootable "fully enabled" System Folder.

  • My System won't start. Please HELP

First of all, it does NOT power-up. Not even beeps, nothing. When I push the power-on buton the FANS slighlty move but that's all, the led of the integrated-lan flashes until I plug off the cord.
Every other component of the System is ok, I have test them all on another motherboard, a K7N2 Delta ISLR one.
A power off crash happened while I was changing some BIOS settings, that's why I think it's not dead.
I wanted to benchmark my System without overclock, stock settings, so I decreased the v.core from 1.7 to [H/W] and decreased the FSB from 183Mhz to 166Mhz, then I saved the Bios and exit. BOOM! The system powered itself off.
Since that moment I cannot get the system to power-on
I have cleared the CMOS, set the FSB to safe mode, remove the battery for more than 90 minutes, and nothing!
I have used a tester looking for short circuits and nothing.
I removed the Motherboard from the Case Chassis and installed on another chassis looking for ground issues and still nothing!
There are no marks around the Motherboard, no pieces are missing or broken.
Since it's on warranty I will send a RMA soon if I don't find a way to solve this!
