OSX wont start but Windows will

I have installed Windows 7 on my Maverick iMac using Boot Camp and now cannot get the OSX to start although Windows starts okay.
I have tried to reformat the whole drive using Disk Utility but that doesnt work as it cannot unmount the Boot Camp drive and the OSX drive wont mount.
Please help as this is most frustrating.

Yep, saw the world rotating, selected disk utility that showed Boot Camp mounted and Macintosh HD greyed out (Not mounted).
The status of the drive is Read/Write, SMART Verified and GUID Partition Table
It also states this partition cant be modified as the disk appears to be partitioned for boot camp
Highlighted the Macintosh partition, selected erase and after a long time it did nothing, same result if i highlighted the Boot Camp partition.
I am at a loss?

My imac is around 4 years old and has been running both windows bootcamp and os x snow leopard for at least 3 years without any problems. My default operating system is mac and when I tried to turn it on this morning it gets stuck on the white screen with the grey apple icon and the loading icon spinning. Also a bar appears below this that I have never seen before.
I have tried opening the mac in recovery mode but it does not respond and goes to the same logo screen.
I have tried holding the 'D' key down while the mac comes on and doing the apple hardware test but once the window pops up it does not complete the probing and appears to freeze just before its completion.
I have also tried booting in safemode but the script stops at these commands:
launch tl: Please convert the following to launchd: etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisory.plist
launch_msg(): socket is not connected
However, the windows bootcamp is working fine and I can access my mac files from there.
Also worth mentioning is that it is not a grey screen that appears on start up it is just the normal apple icon screen.
Tried both smc and pram resets but nothing changed.
Also when I the mac holding alt both the mac hd and windows disc are visible but obviously same problem happens when I click on mac from there.
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks.

If you use the first Grey Disk and the 'C' key, can you boot into OSX and then your disks can be inspected.

Please, run the DirectX diagnostics tool.
Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post.

W540 fingerprint reader wont start during windows logon

Greetings to all fellow thinkpad owners,
As the title indicates, i have an issue with my w540's fingerprint function.
My laptop is relatively new ~2 weeks old and as i am on vacation i boot it every 2-3 days just to mess with it.
few days ago i noticed that the fingerprint wont always start in the first boot and wont work in windows log on, however it will work if i lock/sleep the laptop.
some times it would work some other times it wouldnt. now i tried re-installing the driver and now FP doesnt appear at all in the logon.
i also noticed that the fingerprint software made the laptop a bit slower during the windows startup. now that i have removed it the password area appears almost immediately during the logon process.
things i have tried so far:
1) all drivers are up to date
2) removed all registered fingerprints, deleted the driver and the FP manager pro
3) installed the FPmanager pro from the lenovo update system and registered new fingerprints
4) i only have 1 admin account on windows and the all options are ticked in the FPmanager pro also in biometric settings its ticked to allow users to use FP to log on.
5) waited for 2-3 minutes in the password area, only the FP led open, but it wouldnt work
the issues persists. FP wont appear on logon but only after sleep/lock.
my software specifications:
win7 x64 pro
antivir
latests windows updates
lenovo software not installed: password manager, quick control
and nothing crazy installed apart from steam for games and windows office.
is this a hardware problem or something that windows 7 are causing?

I attempted to reset the policy settings of CSS but then the pop up screen just got stuck:
- I did a reboot and reset the fingerprint data and password (after exporting the
settings),
- uninstalled the fingerprint reader and CSS
- uninstalled the CSS. I had encountered some issues while uninstalling it
Windows is reporting that the installation log file could not be found. I manually
downloaded the driver from the site and used the installer to remove it from my PC
- Reinstalled both CSS and Fingerprint driver
- Import all my security settings (password and fingerprint)
- Tested CSS and used fingerprint as default login method in battery mode
- Enabled Single SignIn method in CSS and BIOS
So far so good, the reinstallation fixed the issue. I did recall that there was a windows update before this mayhem on the fingerprint reader started.

Windows backup wont start on windows 7 home premium

I have been trying to start my windows backup utility on windows 7. It starts to the loading screen that says Starting windows backup, wait while windows backup starts. It stays on this screen indefinitely as i have left the machine run for days on end
waiting for it to start or error out. Any clues as to what this may be caused by, or how to fix it?

how much space at target volume? external HDD? USB pen drive?
i suggest using external HDD, USB pen drive will takes forever
or you can also try using 3rd party application, but its our own risk and fully support comes from manufactured

Please help! Disk errors cant be repaired. OSX WONT START!

I put in the tiger osx install disc so that i could open disk utiliy and repair my macintosh HD which had errors. It now wont let me repair it and wont start up from macintosh HD. I can only start from disk. I have restored from the install disc to the macintosh HD and had no luck. I have files such as documents and applications on the HD.
What i see when i verify disk is:
error - the underlying task reported failure on exit
Invalid catalog record type
Volume checked fail
HFS Volume Checked
Volume needs repair
When i verify it says that volume cant be repaired.
If anyone has any help please let me know and i will reward points.

disc warrior has been great. I have had to use the computer in firewire disk mode and use my laptop to do all the maintenance on for my desktop. It has rebuilt everything and it all seems fine. The desktop still doesnt start up and i think its because its looking for a disc in the drive which i took out when i thought i didnt need it any more. I need to somehow tell it that i want the startup disc to be macintosh HD not the cd. is there any way of doing this.

My Itunes wont open and windows will send out an error message

I was working with Itunes for a long time with no problem what so ever until suddenly yesterday when I opened it I recived an error message from windows saying the process has to close and will I want to send out an error report to windows.
I went on to move my Itunes library and repair the Itunes via the downloaded installation file but when it did not work I uninstalled it completly and reinstalled it with no effect...
If any one have any idea as to how to solve this pls help....

a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is avabilable.
... and that's one that I wasn't thinking of ...
Head into your Windows Update. Are there any new updates available for you? If so, and you install, does that clear up the error message?

My Ipod touch (4th gen) wont charge, but it will sync, and when I look at itunes the charging icon is there

It wont charge but it is syncing, I recently updated Itunes, and the charging icon shows up on iTunes

Did you try another USB port or the wall adapter, or another USB cable?
Also see if a reset may help. To reset the iPod hold the sleep and home button for about 10 sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data doing a reset.

Ipod wont start but syncs normally

I have a problem that seemed to arrive about the same time as Apple updated iTunes to 5.0. My iPod Photo 60gb wont start up to play music anymore. It shows a picture signaling some error and the URL to Apples support site (apple.com/support/ipod) for a few seconds, then shuts of. Apples site gives no clues as to what's the matter though.
The strange thing is that the iPod seems to be working ok when connected to the Mac. It syncs normally and seems to be working as a harddisk.
I have tried a hard reset holding down those two buttons but this does not resolve the problem. I have also tried to download the latest software for the iPod from Apples website, but this won't install.
Does anyone know what to do?

Well... my iPod is not starting at all. even after the steps this tutorial told me to do. i was trying to pick a song on my iPod and then all of a sudden it froze for about 3 minutes and then shut off. and i havent been able to turn it on since. the battery was charged and not low. i tried toggling the hold button and hitting reset even while it was charging with the battery and still nothing. all i hear is the iPod going "vroooom beep" over and over. like its trying to start but cant. its been doing that for almost 12hrs and i dont know what else to do. please help.

help! my computer wont go past the windows loading screen. I recently brought it to a friend's house for a lan, but when I got there it wouldnt go past the windows loading screen. I tried reconnecting and everything, I even RMA'd the board because I had a similiar but not the same problem before. Well I have the new board in and everything (it's 1.6 bios btw). All the diagnostic LEDs seem fine. But the computer still will not go past the loading screen. Any ideas? Maybe it's a PSU or RAM timing problem? This is really frustrating....

Try a stick of DDR2100 or something similar, sounds like the timings are stuck, another mem stick will reset them. Else remove everything, Ram, Drives, power, Cmos Jumper to pins 2 & 3, Video Card, and any USB or PCI cards, leave for several hours to allow total discharge. Then re assemble, if you have a PCI video card use that to get it restarted. But a fresh stick of Ram will likely work.

Firefox process starts but window doesn't open.

All the suddenly when I start Firefox 11 the window doesn't appear but the process will start in task manager. Yesterday morning everything worked well, but when I came home at evening Microsoft Security Essentials wasn't starting it's protection. I got it working by installing it again. Firefox just doesn't open the window for me.
-I have uninstalled Firefox and rebooted system
-Ran CCleaner and Spybot S&D
-Manually reset register values with regedit.
-I have deleted all AppData and plugin files.

You are absolutely right homercles. I should have been more precise with the things I did before I ended up on fresh install.
My point in my last post was that I totally tried to re-install Firefox many times and did all the things other people told me to solve this problem. I even went to cycle throught windows registers manually that is also one thing that you don't want to do if you aren't absolutely sure what you are doing.
My solution was absolutely the last thing you want to do to make things work and takes alot of effort, but as I made my judgement IN MY CASE it was the only thing I could do after week of trying to fix this.

OS X won't boot but Windows will

Hello, today I started having a serious problem with my iMac when booting it up. It won't get passed the apple logo with the spinning wheel, it just stays at this screen. I've times it at well over 20 minutes and it still refuses to start. I hae tried restarting while holding the commandoption+PR keys, I have also tried restarting after unplugging everything and leting it rest for a minute.
At one point I was able to get it to start after leaving it for about 5 minutes, but the computer ran very slowly upon startup. While it was running I tried doing a secure mepty trash because I've heard that might help a bit, and as it was emptying the trash other weird things started happening. My dock dissappeared for no reason at all, I got a message saying something about a conflict with fonts and that they had been moved around or something, then the computer pretty much locked up, not even letting me quit applications or select anything.
I should note that interestingly enough, my windows boot camp partition is functioning normally and fine, and the problems on the mac side seem to have come out of no where. Although I have noticed that upon booting up into the mac side, before the spinning wheel appears, there is a grey status bar that appears where the spinning wheel should be, beneath the apple logo.
I am at a loss for what I should do at this point as nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

This usually means critical system files are damaged. Try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

Bridge wont Start on Windows 7

Hey There
I was using Bridge cs4 on windows 7. until last night, I didn't have any problem with it. next day, I turned on my computer and try to use Bridge, the program is not starting at all. there is no error message but no start. I check other adobe program and they are fine.
When I check processes section on task manager, right after I click on bridge.exe, the image name on processes I see bride.exe for couple of second and it disappears.
Can anyone help me with this

That is weird enough to try resetting the preferences. Make sure Bridge is off and hold down the Ctrl key and click on start icon for Bridge. If things are working normllay you will get a reset window. Choose all 3 options.
If you get it started I would recommend disabling the option to start Bridge on Startup. Causes more problems that it is worth.
