OSX Yosemite constant reboot

Hi,
Since installing Yosemite my mac mini (Mid 2011) will only get 10-20% into the start up process before shutting down like some pulled the power cable out the back. It then proceeds to try and boot again but with the same result over and over. I can get into safe boot and it stays on, the console lists shutdown cause as -128.

Prior to the Yosemite install I had run OS X Lion for 3 years without any issue, the system has been rock solid. I did a clean install of Yosemite, did the usual disk check/repairs and have since tried again resetting PRAM, SMC, ran Apple diagnostics multiple times but to no avail, all results come back as ok. Been a Mac user for over 20 years and never seen this before, I don't understand how a system change can kill a computer like this but I'm out of ideas.
Mark

There may be more than one issue, but a negative shutdown code, if it happens repeatedly, may indicate a hardware problem. The precise meaning of the codes is not publicly documented.
If you haven't already done so, you can try resetting the System Management Controller. Otherwise, or if the reset has no effect, see below.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • OSX 10.10.2 Yosemite Slow Reboot Problem

Millions of mac units have been upgraded to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite and rebooting process takes 42 seconds on average instead 20 + . The reason is still unknown
but more likely new OS X all fix the problem . It also appears that SSD macs didn't suffer from this issue so it is mainly affecting on regular hard drive base mac units.

  • After IOS 8 upgrade on phone, documents no longer synch in Pages.  I find out subsequently that when I upgraded it gave me iCloud Drive, which won't synch unless my computer has OSX Yosemite, which isn't available.  Apple says they can't get me back.

Apple upgraded me to a new IOS that has now eliminated my ability to synch Pages docs which I've been using quite successfully.  So now every time work in pages it tells me that my documents won't synch and to "upgrade to OSX Yosemite."  The problem:  Yosemite IS NOT AVAILABLE yet.  Will they let me go back to the old way until Yosemite is available?  No they will not.  I'm stuck with devices that won't work together.  I recall no warning that by upgrading to IOS8 would mess up my ability to use my devices as intended -- that my devices would be less compatible.  I feel duped and manipulated.  And to clarify, I only updated on my phone.  Once I saw (subsequent to update) that my synching of docs would no longer work, I decided not to upgrade my iPad mini.  But guess what -- just updating my iPhone has now changed me to iCloud Drive and that means that all of my devices are incompatible.

That happened to me. I rebooted and now my docs are back again.

  • Is there a way to disable mouse acceleration in OSX Yosemite?

i have used my dads iMac and MBP in the past and always noticed how bad the mouse response was in my opinion. Mind you, some people like the way the mouse responds in OSX and will probably have no idea what my issue is. That is mouse acceleration and the lack of option to disable it in the mouse settings panel. Here is a good explanation about what it is, also in the video is a visual example.
"Mouse or cursor acceleration, to put it simply, makes the travel distance of your cursor on the screen reliant of the velocity of your physical mouse movement rather than just the distance that you move your mouse. So making one movement of the same distance at two different speeds will cause two different relative cursor movements, with quick movement causing the cursor to travel a greater distance."
    source:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16diwK6HWbI
So the thing i want to accomplish, is making the physical mouse movement one-to-one with the cursor speed on the screen. As an example: moving my mouse 10 cm would always make my mouse on the screen go 1000 pixels, no matter how fast i move my mouse.
I've had my mouse set up like that in windows and linux for quite some time now and i hope there is an easy way to set the mouse response like that in OSX as well.
I want to make clear that this isn't just an issue in games where you want to have great mouse precision. I have become really accustomed to this way of mouse response in any type of application. So the problem lies not in any mouse settings of any game/program. The problem lies in how OSX translates physical mouse movement to cursor movement.
Anyway, i ran into this issue about a year ago when i was using my dad's computer. i've had my own windows computer for some time now. An option to disable mouse acceleration in OSX Yosemite might have been implemented properly in the mean time. I have searched this community and found some old posts of people who had this same problem as me, but never read about any fix for it. The main reason i am asking this is because i am considering buying a Macbook.
I'd rather not use any third party software, but if there is any out that that just works and is easy to use, let me know.

Please don't be obnoxious to people like tbirdvet trying to help; nobody here owes you an answer, or anything else for that matter.
Anyway, Yosemite seems to enable mouse acceleration by default. You can disable it to get a constant pixels pointer moves / meters mouse moved ratio by typing this in terminal:
         defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
you'll need to logout and log back in for changes to take effect. To restore the standard behaviour:
         defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling 2
    should do the trick.

  • Photoshop CC2014 in OSX Yosemite (Mac book pro retina 2014) crashes frequently and Merge to HDR does not work

My photoshop CC2014 on my Mac OSX Yosemite crashes all the time with random tasks. Now almost nothing works. Sometimes it stops working after doing random tasks like starting photoshop and i have to do a hard reset by putting the power off of my Mac pro retina (2014). After logging in again i got the message from Photoshop that  graphics problem occurred with a Problem report I will post here. I also cannot merge to HDR from lightroom to photoshop & also in Photoshop in the file menu > automate merge to HDR pro. It 8 of 10 times it stops working and I won't select one of the brackets. I have to force quit photoshop. I think these instability problems started after updating to Yosemite but become worser everyday. I also disabled the graphics driver, put it on basic and enabled/disabled open gl, sometimes photoshop disables it automaticly. My osx is up to date so I don't have to update my graphic driver because these updates or done within the OSX update pane. I cannot add the Problem report file in this topic, How can I do this???

Have you installed all the Photoshop updates and MacOS 10.10 updates?
Disabling GPU usage in Photoshop should help with the video driver bugs in MacOS 10.10, until Apple can solve all the driver issues (yes, Apple knows about them and is working on solutions).
What does the long, detailed crash log say?
Also, anything that freezes, shuts down, or reboots the machine is not an application error - but caused by an OS bug, a low level driver bug, or faulty hardware.  Applications simply cannot cause those symptoms on modern OSes.

  • Drag and Drop only partly functions in OSX Yosemite

I recently updated my Macbook Pro to OSX Yosemite and noticed a few weeks after the update, that Drag and Drop stopped working properly roughly 30mins after starting the MB. Drag and Drop still works in the Finder for dragging files, or ein Chrome for dragging a tab into a diferent window. But dragging files and programs into the Dock is impossible. the problem occurs in other programs such as MS Office, for changing the order of pages in a presentation, or in Itunes for dragging Albums into Playlists for example. Restarting helps, but only for the first moments after the start. I found in a different Discussion that deleting a Cache file from the Library (/Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist) didnt help (Link to the Discussion: Cannot drag and drop files in Finder on Yosemite 10.10
Thanks for your time in advance and i hope someone finds a solution as I dont want to reinstall the whole OSX

    Backgorund:
    Drag-drop suddenly stops working.
    Temporary solutions:
    4-5 reboots
    Removing com.apple.finder.plist file
    Have not tried:
    Reinstall Yosemite
    What I found out:
For me, I found out that it's not only about drag/drop - it's about the clipboard. As far as copy/paste went, "nothing" work anymore. Not drag and drop, not cmd+c, not Edit > Copy. I started experience the issue just yesterday I think - it came out of the blue.
However, a week ago I created an Automator scripts that review folder X for extension Y and then moves the file of said extension into a separate folder. Essentially, it's a cut and paste job that Automator does all the time.
    Soluton:
Removed the Automator workflow i created from /users/username/library/workflows. Rebooted computer. Drag/drop and copy/paste has been working for over an hour.

  • My MBP constantly freezes after upgrading to OSX Yosemite

    Hi all,
I recently did a clean install upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite. Ever since then, my laptop is constantly getting the spinning wheel and freezes at random moments and it is extremely frustrating. Sometimes it would just restart on its own. I tried resetting the PRAM with no luck. Please, please, please help!
    Specs:
OSX Yosemite v10.10, MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB, HDD: Crucial 128GB SSD
    Thank you.

Since moving to Yosemite - both 10.10.0 and 10.10.1 - on my rMBP I also find that it regularly becomes unstable after a period of use that can vary from hours to days.
Once it's in this state, the spinning ball appears for most apps, even simple ones like Preview although never for Terminal.
The only 'cure' is a reboot, after which everything is great again, no problems, so the issue is clearly a very serious defect in Yosemite.
My setup uses SMB shares to a Linux NAS and Apple has a long history of SMB problems, so I'm wondering whether Yosemite has a fundamental flaw in this area and can't cope with e.g. sleeping when SMB shares are in use. Mavericks was absolutely fine - in fact I'm really wishing I hadn't upgraded but the move to iOS 8 with apps insisting on iCloud Drive made it difficult to remain on Mavericks.

  • Safari slow after OSX Yosemite 10.3.3 update

Hi, this week I ran the OSX Yosemite 10.3.3 on my MacBook Pro. Since then I note that accessing websites is incredibly slow in the beginning. The progress bar under the Safari address line stops at the 1st third for several minutes . The only thing that helps is to close Safari and restart it again.
I have already rebooted the MacBood and disabled all Safari ad-ins. The network is as fast as usual (6 MBits/s) on my IPAD.
    Any ideas
    Regards

  • TIP: DO NOT UPGRADE TO OSX YOSEMITE!!!

If you are on a Mac (unfortunately I'm forced to use one at the office), do not, I repeat, do NOT "upgrade" to OSX Yosemite. Adobe still hasn't figured out the conflicts between EA and Yosemite. I've been fighting issues all day with lock ups, etc. If you want to keep your sanity, wait to upgrade the OS until Adobe issues a patch.
On a side note, I can't wait to get back to my PC at home. No issues there...

    My user experience with Yosemite:
Both versions can be installed "side by side". I mean: Edge 4.0 and 5.0.1

  • Screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
My screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite on my macbook pro late 2008
Can't solve it by my self..

I had noticed I was having this issue too, and my screensaver never kicking in, and just going to sleep with it never kicking in.
I had gone in and checked to see if any of the settings had got changed or deleted in the system upgrade, but they were all still set at what I had them at prior... so, did as some attempted above also, and adjusted the times for it to kick in, and still nothing.  Worked when I would hit 'Preview', but still not kick in at the interval time.
What I just did to get it to work, was just to simply go into System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver, and just reselected the folder of images that I want to be used, in my case, a folder of images in my iPhoto.  And it now works.
Apparently, it wasn't working, because, even though it was still selected to use that folder in iPhoto, something must have changed in the upgrades, which might of had something to to with the iPhoto update too, where it had to update my iPhoto library upon relaunch... and my screensaver settings were set to access that older directed to folder within Library, that was updated in the new release... and so, just repointing it to that folder now in iPhoto, got it to work.
At least, that is my figurin', and I'm stickin' to it!

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.
    Ciao.

  • Can't upgrade Macbook Pro to OSX Yosemite

Hi - I've been trying to update my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 to OSX Yosemite.  After dowloading and running the installer, it goes through the process of preparing the installation, closing all programs and preparing to restart. Then I get this error.
    I've tried:
    -Running the application again
-Redownloading the Yosemite software multiple times
    -Checking for updates
-Running the Yosemite installer with wifi off
