OSX Yosemite login slow to accept password

I recently enabled a password on my mac for login and wake from sleep. The problem I am having is that a good 50% of the time I enter the password (either initial login or wake from sleep) it just sits there with a spinning wheel.. not the beachball but the "I am doing something" spinner. The wait time for the password to be accepted is anywhere from 45-90 seconds. All other times the acceptance is immediate.
I have tried disabling the password and enabling it, changing the password from my iCloud ID to a stand alone ID and it still keeps happening. One could say so what but I am locking my pc after 5 minutes idle so I am having to input the password a lot and those minutes of waiting are adding up.
Anyone have any words of wisdom?

Upon suffering similar symptoms, I was able to diagnose, reproduce, and fix the problem, as documented on the Apple StackExchange question "This “weird group trick" makes MacBook Pro login, apps, and systems run slow slow slow … but why?"
URL: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/171862/this-weird-group-trick-makes-mac book-pro-login-apps-and-systems-run-slow-slo
The fix in a nutshell: identify and eliminate circular group inclusions.

  • Cannot boot from HDD, Login won't accept password

    I have a iBook G4 1Ghz, 768mb. 10.4.3
External HDD is a Prolific PL3507 120gb. Some time ago I cloned the iBook onto a partition using SuperDuper. Recently, wanting to test the clone I rebooted holding down the 'Option' key, selected the HDD volume which is seen by the iBook. (I couldn't select it otherwise could I, doh!).
Start up seems to go as it should, but slowly, but then gets to a login window which will not accept my usual login. When the clone was done I had a different password, but it won't accept that either. I have changed the iBook password back to what it was at the time of the clone, still no result.
I have tried from Startup Disk in System Preferences, again the volume is seen as a startup volume but I still get the login window and the 'shuddering' box, whatever I put in as user/password. Sometimes I get the rainbow wheel for about 15 secs while it 'thinks' about my password and then the shuddering box.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian

    jtk2,
Do you have "auto login" enabled for your account, and you are simply getting logged in this way?
If so, there could be some problem with your Netinfo Database. There are methods of "surgically" correcting these problems with the Netinfo Database, but I prefer to recommend a complete replacement, as I feel it is usually easier and more likely to be successful. It is a non-destructive process; you will lose no data, and your current HOME folder will be used for the new account you will create. NOTE: If it is in use, Filevault should be disabled before attempting this process.
    Follow these instructions:
    * Perform steps 1, 2, 4, and 5 in section III of this kbase article, making sure that you follow the instructions at the top of the article for correctly mounting your startup disk as read/write in single-user mode (step #1). Perform only the steps I have listed.
    * When you perform step #5, you will restart into the "Setup Assistant." Use the Setup Assistant to create a new "initial" admin account using the exact same username and user short name as the original "initial" admin account. You might be required to enter complete contact information for registration with Apple, but you may skip "Connecting to the Internet," "Sending Registration to Apple," etc. Skipping these steps will leave an alias for registering in your HOME folder, but this alias can be safely deleted once you are logged in (you are, after all, already registered with Apple). If you are able to have your machine connected to the internet during this process, you can retrieve your information using your Apple ID, and everything will be filled in for you.
    * Once logged into your admin account, use System Preferences>Accounts to recreate any "secondary" accounts, again using the exact same username and user short name as the original accounts. Recreate these accounts in the exact order that they were created originally. In each case, you will be told that there is an existing HOME folder with the same short name, and that this HOME folder will be used for this new account. This is what you want.
If you have questions about these instructions, just ask.

  • After reinstalling osx, MacBook pro isn't accepting password

I wanted to reformat the hd and install an upgrade hd. I inserted disc and reloaded the osx it came with so I could essentially erase everything else including lion. Now I can't log in. It's not recognizing my password. Really I just wanted to make sure it was erased so I can install the new hd. How do I get this thing to recognize password, or bypass it?

    Hi,
I would be interested in hearing a reply to your question as the same happened to me.  In the end I looked for the answer on the Internet and ended up with two harddrives recorded on my computer and it's driven me mad.  I have just installed Lion and have had trouble with all of my applications.
For instance when I've tried to open Outlook and several other applications the following message appears and the app won't open,
'Check with developer to make sure voiceover utility works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to re-install the application.  Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.'
I have re-intalled my applications a number of time and still have the same proble,
I would wait for some sound advice before you do anything that you may regret or spend hours trying to sort it out.

  • OSX Yosemite login screen problem.

    Hello,
I've been using a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display for almost a year now, and recently got a problem.
The login screen shows some wavy-lines, and they only appear when i start or restart my macbook, and i wonder if it got worse.
If anyone has any fixes, please let me know by replying to this thread.
    Thank you,

I have the same thing when I encounter the login screen. I "think" it's just a blurred image of what will appear as your background image on your desktop after logging in.

Apple ID has my old email address. It will not allow me to change the address and will not accept my password or ID questions.   I recently upgraded to OSX Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also have an Apple ID that works with iTunes and would like to keep it as my primary.

To change the iCloud ID on your devices you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted (if using iOS 7), then sign back in with your current ID.
If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, you will have to temporarily recreate it in order to delete the existing account.  To do this, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • How to create/reset root password on OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
I am currently a standard user on a late 2008 Macbook Pro. There are two users on my computer, mine and another admin account. I do not know the password to the admin account. Before I upgraded to OSX Yosemite I had created a root user password in SUM using the command "passwd". After I upgraded (I reset my computer) I was back at square one, me as a standard user and another admin account that I didn't know the password. After I upgraded the “passwd” command didn’t work.
I tried to obtain the root password using multiple SUM commands like, "rm /var/db/ .AppleSetupDone" which didn't work because it said that it couldn't find the file. Then I tried to use the command, “/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist” and then entering “passwd”. However that didn’t work. (Everything I did was after I mounted the drive.)
So I was wondering if anyone on the forums knew of a way for a standard user to reset the root password without the knowledge of the admin password.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey SamuraiPizzzaCat,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use automatic login. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Login Options pane of Users & Groups preferences
    Automatic login
Choose Off to require users to log in whenever the Mac restarts.
To automatically log in a particular user when the Mac restarts, choose the user’s account name and enter his or her password.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

  • I have OSX 10.5.7 on my Intel Mac. When I try to login using the correct password the screen goes white and just returns back to the login screen. It does not jiggle like when you enter the wrong password.

I have had a number of issues with my Intel Mac recently and had to reboot using disk utilities, safe mode, OSX recovery, but always come back to the login screen but when I type my password the screen goes white and returns to the login screen. My password is correct and the login does not jiggle as it would if the password was wrong. Please advise,

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
The procedure below may spare you the need for a clean reinstallation of OS X. If you don't feel comfortable carrying it out, don't. try.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
    /var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
    mount -uw /
You must type the command exactly as given, with no mistakes. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be. Press the return key.
    Next, type the following command:
    rm -i /var/audit/current
Press return. You should get the following output:
    remove /var/audit/current?
If that's not what you get, STOP. Type the single letter N, press return, and try again. Otherwise, type the single letter Y and pressreturn.
    Finally, enter the command:
    exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.

  • For about 2 weeks I have been unable to leave feedback on ebay. Firefox brings up login page but will not accept password. I am having the same problem with my yahoo email. It will not accept my passwords, so I have to use IE to login to these accounts.

On yahoo email, it accepted my login id, but not password. This started on one account about two weeks ago. Today when I tried to login to another yahoo email, which worked yesterday, but it would not accept my password on this account.
I bought some items on ebay and wanted to leave feedback. When I clicked on the leave feedback button a sign in window appeared, this should not have happened, when I tried to sign in, it would not accept my password. I called ebay and was told they have had many complaints from customers using firefox when trying to leave feedback. The help desk suggested I try with Internet Explorer, I did, and it worked perfectly.

First of all, did you have PSE installed before updating to 10.10? If so, you need to do this:

Also, be sure you have updated to 10.10.1. And if you have a large number of recently imported images in the organizer, PSE will be slow till organizer is through creating thumbnails for the photos.

  • Yosemite Mail do not accept my iCloud password

Yosemite Mail do not accept my iCloud password. Why it does not work?
    Web version is working fine.

    Hi there.
Since my situation is very similar, rather than start a new thread, I wonder if I could jump on this one for some clarification & to see if I'm okay to proceed with the Tiger instructions you posted.
    I'm running 10.4.11 on a 17" Titanium PowerBook G4. I have a .mac e-mail address & I'm using Apple Mail.
I migrated to iCloud several weeks ago & everything's been fine but I haven't been able to get any e-mail through all weekend.
I logged in to iCloud a short while ago & everything seems fine.
So could I ask whether the procedure you linked to works for .mac addresses as well as .me addresses?
Also, can I assume that the messages that are still sitting in my inbox will still be there after I remove the existing account & create the new one, (seeing as they're synchronised with the inbox online), whilst the complex hierarchy of folders I've created locally in the mail client will remain untouched?
    Thanks!
