OT: 3D Apps on Mac - Which and Why?

Hi All,
I'm beginning to explore some 3D design and would appreciate your advice and insights. I am a graphic designer - traditionally working 2D print. However, my longer term goals are to get into product/industrial design (hand held size objects like perfume bottles, packaging, housewares and perhaps small furniture).
As well, I currently work in an architecture firm where I am beginning to work on signage projects. My goal with working in 3D is to be able to:
1. Draft the design in 2D and create usable spec drawings to be passed to a fabricator, and
2. Create a 3D mock-up of the signage in a virtual environment to share the idea with the client.
Unfortunately, at work I am on a PeeCee. I'm aware of Autodesk's 3Ds Max and VIZ, but do not want to purchase a PeeCee for these at home. We do have a few licenses for 3Ds and VIZ at work, but I'd much rather maintain my Mac-based home and freelance life for the long term, as one day I may move on to other opportunities and don't want to have switched to the PeeCee for what little 3D work I'll do at my current position. I'm confident that there are many successful Mac-based industrial designers out there and hope that one might chime in and share their experience here.
What are the common 3D apps for today's Mac-based industrial designers?
Here are a few I've briefly looked into:
Autodesk: Maya
Maxon: Cinema 4D
Newtek: Lightwave
Ashlar-Vellum: Graphite w/ Cobalt/Xenon
Cheetah 3D
Google: SketchUp (Pro)
I have begun working with SketchUp (very minorly) and am starting some tutorials with Maya 8.5 PLE. I've also downloaded a trial version of Cheetah.
My main question here is, which app(s) would you recommend to someone who is a beginner in 3D and is looking to work in product design in the future, yet be able to utilize 3D skills in architectural signage & graphics in generating competent spec sheets for fabrication and client 'wow-ing'?
Thanks for reading my rather lengthy post and taking the time to respond - I truly appreciate it.
Best,
Michael
P.S. - I am planning a significant machine upgrade in the near future to an 8-core system to start working more seriously with 3D.

I've been doing 3D for about 9 years. Started with Strata Pro 3D have owned many others including Bryce, Carrara, Poser, RED, Lightwave. have tried about everything in one form or another. What I've learned is there are only 3 that really count for the regular guy. Lightwave, 3D max & Maya. I went with Lightwave. You get a full set of tools & the render engine beats everything else out of the box hands down! It is extremely stable. Still waiting for the Universal version which will be deal breaker if Newtek craps out on it, I don't think that will happen considering the number of posts I've seen reguarding the Universal beta version. All 3 programs take a considerable amount of dedication-you've just left the safe space of graphic design and entered the world of 3D. What I mean is 3D takes all your skills and puts them back at beginner level. If you don't have a real love for problem solving, computers & art you might as well not spend the money. It's the difference between buying a cello for your home or weekend orchestra concert and making a living playing a cello or piano, you get the point. Sorry, went off there. I like Lightwave for what I do, the price for all the features I get, stability, amount of free/pay available training, and it's a standard in the industry. Hope that helps.

  • On RTS-CTS & DTR-DSR pairs, which and why?

    Hello All
Is there somewhere in the Net a good article about when and why to use the flow control RTS-CTS and/or DTR-DSR.
I am dealing with duplex communication between two devices via RS232 and I would like to know when and why to control those lines.
I also found three types of Null-Modem cables and all it is connected with the control of those lines.
Where I can read about it?
    Thanks in advance
    Pawel

Most RS-232 communication is full duplex, meaning you can transmit and receive at the same time. RS-232 UARTs have separate transmit and receive machines and FIFOs. The processing speed and large available memory of today's electronics (PCs as well as other devices) drastically reduce the need for hardware handshaking. I've been writing RS-232 applications for almost 20 years. I haven't used hardware handshaking for over 15 years, and that application only required it because one piece of equipment was already 30 years old.
Hardware handshaking adds complexity to the software as well as the hardware. If you're only going a short distance, off the shelf cables include all RS-232 lines. But for longer runs, it will be easier and cheaper to run 3 or 4 conductor cabl
    e without hardware handshaking.
If you need handshaking, consider software handshaking if your devices support XON/XOFF handshaking.
If you do a Google search for RS-232 handshaking, you'll find plenty of links. Some of these will give you an introduction.

  • Should I get a new Mac Pro or a used Power Mac G5, and why?

I'm trying to decide which of these would be a better choice and better cost/benefit/value ratio.
I spend my time in Photoshop CS and Adobe Lightroom most of the time. I have NO intention of running Windows, so I wouldn't miss that by going with the G5.
    What are your thoughts?
    Here's a G5 that looks pretty tempting.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-Power-Mac-G5-Dual-1-8-Ghz-4GB-1000GB-DVD-R-Maxed_W0QQi temZ190131690775QQihZ009QQcategoryZ51036QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

That is a lot of "maybe's" and big "if's" - there will ALWAYS be change and updates, and no one knows what or when. Just 'speculation'. Or, needed? not if someone things they would be happy with 4 yr old G5, they aren't worried about the next upgrade and leading edge.
I don't know that the Mac Pro is a year old. Then again, it hasn't changed. One new model configuration added.
As for "$1000 upgrades" that is a PLUS, not a MINUS as you can't even find video or stuff more memory, and limited on disk drives with the G5.
The G5 would turn in a score of less than half of 2GHz MP, more like 1/4 especially with stock 2.66. $1895 for Apple ref's @ www.apple.com for MP, too.
Do your shopping on Apple Store Specials, not ebay. A lot of G5s are showing their age and in need of some heavy cost fixes, PSU, failing video, logicboard ... and you may be out on a limb.

  • How to submit a JavaFX app to MAC App Store?

I have packaged my JavaFX application as a self-contained application using simple JavaFX Deployment steps on MAC. According to link "Packaging a Java App for Distribution on MAC ", only the last step is remaining which describes "submitting an app to mac store" . But unfortunately links that lead us to help page are redirecting to the same page and that information is not clearly define steps required to submit a JavaFX app to mac store.  Why I need XCode to submit my Java Application to App store? Do I need go through signing steps again, as my app is already sign with valid certificate issued by COMODO?  Can I get any help link which guide me to submit my JavaFX app to MAC app store?
Steps so far I have done-
    Create a JAR File
Bundle the JAR File into an App Package
Bundle the JRE with the App Package
    Sign the App
Now what next to submit a JavaFX app to MAC App Store?

Oracle are working on producing a sample for Mac App Store deployment.

  • App on mac to settle finances between friends.

is there any app for mac which can be used to settle finances between friends who share an apartment. like rent, groceries, stationary, etc..

Complex applications may not be necessary.
First thing is to just split the *shared* bills (rent, power, electical, ...) 50/50.
If that is an undue burden on one of the two, try this simple rule:
Person A makes $1000 per month
Person B makes $2000 per month
Person B pays 2/3 of the shared cost and person A pays 1/3.
But something tells me it is easier to lay out all of the *shared* bills on the table, and separate them until they split  by value to 50/50

A .exe file is a Windows executable. OS X does not run Windows programs. If you need to use .exe files then you will need to install Windows on your Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Which Mac Pro? More cores=slower speeds? And most of us know the speed matters or FPU for music and I don't understand the faster is for the least amount of procs. And while I get the whole rendering thing and why it makes sense.
The above is what the bar says. It's been a while and wondered, maybe Apple changed the format for forums. Then got this nice big blank canvas to air my concerns. Went to school for Computer Science, BSEE, even worked at Analog Devices in Newton Massachusetts, where they make something for apple.
The bottom line is fast CPU = more FPU = more headroom and still can't figure out why the more cores= the slower it gets unless it's to get us in to a 6 core then come out with faster cores down the road or a newer Mac that uses the GPU. Also. Few. I'm the guy who said a few years ago Mac has an FCP that looks like iMovie on Steroids. Having said that I called the campus one day to ask them something and while I used to work for Apple, I think she thought I still did as she asked me, "HOW ARE THE 32 CORES/1DYE COMING ALONG? Not wanting to embarrass her I said fine, fine and then hung up.  Makes the most sense as I never quite got the 2,6,12 cores when for years everything from memory to CPU's have been, in sets of 2 to the 2nd power.  2,4,8,16,32,64,120,256,512, 1024, 2048,4196,8192, 72,768.  Wow. W-O-W and will be using whatever I get with Apollo Quad.
Peace to all and hope someone can point us in THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  THANK YOU

    Xeon 8 core - E5.1680v2
    Xeon 12 core - E5.2697v2
I read that the CPU is easy to swap out but am sure something goes wrong at a certain point - even if solderedon they make material to absorb the solder, making your work area VERY clean.
My Question now is this, get an 8 core, then replace with 2 3.7 QUAD CHIPS, what would happen?
I also noticed that the 8 core Mac Pro is 3.0 when in fact they do have a 3.4 8 core chip, so 2 =16? Or if correct, wouldn't you be able to replace a QUAD CHIP WITH THAT?  I;M SURE THEY ARE UO TO SOMETHING AS 1) WE HAVE SEEN NO AUDIO FPU OR PERHAPS I SHOULD CHECK OUT PC MAKERS WINDOWS machines for Sisoft Sandra "B-E-N-C-H-M-A-R-K-S" -
SOMETHINGS UP AND AM SURE WE'LL ALL BE PLEASED, AS the mac pro      was announced Last year, barely made the December mark, then pushed to January, then February and now April.
Would rather wait and have it done correct than released to early only to have it benchmarked in audio and found to be slower in a few areas- - - the logical part of my brain is wondering what else I would have to swap out as I am sure it would run, and fine for a while, then, poof....
PEACE===AM SURE APPLE WILL BLOW US AWAY - they have to figure out how to increase the power for 150 watts or make the GPU work which in regard to FPU, I thought was NVIDIA?

    Hi,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If after reboot that doesn't help...
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Put simply, the minimum system requirements for iTunes have changed. You need a Mac running at least OS X 10.6.8.
It's best you look online to see if your model of Mac can be upgraded to at least 10.6.8 "Snow Leopard". It should still be possible to order a copy of Snow Leopard if so.

Why is there a charge for apps on the Mac laptops and computers and not on the Ipad or Iphone? And the same apps are cheaper on my Nook?

Kind of unfair. I get the cheapest ones on my Nook and all my friends that have Iphones and Ipads are free.
