OT: All Shaken Up

Just by way of sharing with the regular posters, it's been a wild day here.  We've had a few little quakes near me over the last couple of days, but we had a big one this morning, and a huge 6.5 this evening that lasted 30 seconds and had my house moving back and forth like an angry giant had a hold of it.  I was in the shower when this morning's quake hit, and I thought I was going to fall through the glass.  I always thought experiencing a decent earthquake would be an adventure before coming to live in NZ, but, by heck, the 6.5 was not funny at all!!!  My wife Chris is duty manager at the hospital tonight, and she was dreading going to work, because she has to organise things if it goes seriously pear shaped while she's in charge.
OK guys.  Sorry for the off topic, but I kind of needed to get that off my chest, so to speak.

They recently made a re-evaluation of the tsunami risk on the eastern coasts of NZ, so it is definitely a consideration.  I wouldn't live near the coast, and that's for sure.
They build houses with earthquakes in mind here, and upgrade the specs as they get more experience from big quakes.  In Christchurch two years ago, it was the old stone and brick buildings that collapsed.  One big difference between here and the UK is that they don't use concrete tiles on the roofs, going instead, for light aluminium roofs which need much lighter trusses.
Hmm we just had a little shake as I was typing.
On Sunday I could see the walls moving back and forth as the whole house moved.  I imagine they build lighter to minimise the effects of inertia and momentum from the shaking.  One reason Christchurch caused so much damage was that the shakes had a higher vertical element than is usual with earthquakes.
BTW  We have seen the cat once, but it eats quickly and goes back outside.  It’ll calm down in a day or two I’m sure.

  • There's a ghost in my computer ... and it is not Steve Jobs

In 1986,  the MSX Gradient arrived in Brazil and it was my first computer. Since then, I went through all PC stages  - from DOS to Windows - and three years ago I finally surrendered to the MacBook Pro, entering into a completely new world for me. A world that my brother (who signs this text with me) had known since 2006 and that seduced me because it promised perfect backups, easy file recovery, and full immunity against virus and malware attacks.
My satisfaction was such that I decided to upgrade the machine. On January 31 I put a 1T Samsung HD  and two Kingston 4GB DDR-3 memory cards. This allowed me to finally transfer 460 GB of songs from my library to the computer. On March 1, I upgraded iTunes 11.1.5 and my nightmare gradually began... and my hopes of being with an ‘everything-proof’ equipment were all shaken. From day to night ,65,000 songs disappeared on my iTunes - and not just on the HD, but also on the TimeMachine backup.
Soon after the upgrade, iTunes started to freeze and face the need of a forced  shut down. But back then,  I had no idea it could be a problem from the the update. Then, I started feeling there was a cold shadow looming behind my back ... and last Saturday, I decided to restore the computer, imagining a disk fragmentation on imports of songs (something I was accustomed to when using computers I had prior Mac). I created a new backup and did a restore (Command R). But when it ended, not only 80% of the songs were gone, as there were still missing files from transfers that I had done in those same weeks! And when I went to the iTunes' music folder in TimeMachine, I only found 46 GB of them ... panic, terror, despair ... and a question: is this really a Mac?!
In Brazil, I could not find any reference to iTunes 11.1.5 problems, but in these communities  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5943168?tstart=0 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/25124369#25124369 I discovered that there was a bug in iTunes: apparently Apple released new a version without being attentive to all possibilities of error - something I’ve seen a competitor do so many times for decades! And now, iTunes get in conflict with the iBook ... and, then,  I felt that ghost getting closer to me.
My brother used the procedures described in http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/ to delete the iBook. And since Monday we are re-importing my music to the HD ... but iTunes has crashed again and that ghost has finally reached my computer.
Moreover, I could not find out what might have happened with TimeMachine (Iomega 1T).  I suspect that it stopped doing full backups of my computer after I inserted my music library. And the fact is that in no time was this library really saved - except for that fact that I have preserved the original HD where my music came from. This means that, again, I have to back up the backup, something I learned to do since computers only stored information on 720 Kb disks... and this ghost that took possession of my Mac now has a name: Bill!

  • Galaxy Nexus: To return or roll the dice on an update? The issues had by many, the Q's we all have.

    Hey all,
I'm in a bit of a pickle and was curious what other nexus owners would have to offer. First of all, Im not just trolling the boards, Ive been doing a lot of extensive research on these problems and have found that Im not the only one experiencing them and, at least until this fabled 4.0.3 update comes along, there is no real "fix" except perhaps to swap out the phone and hope it doesnt act the same way, or continue going around with a phone you paid 5 bills for, knowing that it works worse than your treo 750 of yore. So let me explain the deal...
I got the GNex on the 15th, one of the first in line. I love the phone (screen quality, ICS, camera, etc) but have since had a fair number of issues. The battery problem, well, its a 4G phone with a huge display so I can live with the fact that I have 2 batteries for it and one extended. Im not complaining about it being a juice hog (it is), I can live with that. Furthermore, theres a lot of speculation that the juice problem is a correlation of the 4G "lock on signal issue" that myself and many others are having, and that if verizon/google does release this next update, it should eliviate both issues. The main issue with my signal is the fact that I cant lock on to a good 4G or 3G signal. After turning on the screen, the phone searches for 4G, eventually aquires a signal but will also eventually lose it and be in "data limbo" where its unable to get to a stable 3G signal and hovers below 1X, being effectively useless for a phone or mobile data device. The area I live in has fine 4G and even better 3G, yet when I've tried to set the phone to 3G as the preffered network, it has an even tougher time aquiring a 3G signal than it does a 4G one. It just seems to always be looking for 4G, which is a possible reason for the battery woes myself and a great deal of us are going through. Im upset that Verizon did acknowlege there was an issue with the phones signal and that it would be addressed via update, but then 2 days later, pulled a 360 and said that "there is no performance issues with the phone whatsover and the update 4.0.3 will address a problem with the signal reading of the phone". This is upsetting. I was in my local verizon store, where, god bless em, they didnt even know how to look up the signal strength on the phone, let alone how to interpret the numbers. I showed the "tech support" woman my signal strength of -75dbm in contrast to a driod razors of 55db, and she immedietly said "Oh, see! You have a stronger signal. Thats good." I then told her that 75 is a horrible signal compared to 55 and she managed to wipe the egg of her face, looking fine in her verizon skirt but not knowing anything when it comes to the questions I had at hand.
Recently my phone has been having the random reboots that a great deal of us have had aswell. Once while driving and listening to music via bluetooth and last night after shutting the phone down, it immedietly rebooted. (Google nexus auto reboot and youll see what im talking about). Its happened a few more times than this, but these times are the ones I remember exactly what I was doing with it, and, lets face it, 1 reboot for a new GNex is one too many; this phone is too hardcore and beefy to suffer from reboots. My phone is not rooted and I have minimal apps installed from my HTC incredible, most of which are news reading apps like CNN or google currents, which arent running in the background and only use data when I open the app. I havent even been executing any apps with regular frequency except google music which I use on the regular. Im about to do another hard reset and install no apps at all and see how it fairs. The signal issue is one thing, and I am hopeful that it will be addressed in this next update, but the fact that I dont have a lot of apps (especially any that I would see causing a hardware conflict needing a reboot) and Im still getting this occasional reboot, is troubling, to say the least. Again: I absolutely love this phone. Im a gadget freak, have had many a smartphone and I really like the formfacter, OS and screensize/density of this device. Its also my first nexus device, which I've waited for since the nexus one came out on Tmobile and I was still loyal to big red. I like the nexus line because its to be the hackers phone, a phone for developers, freakers, pirates, what have you. Ive always loved that idea, as I wear a few of those hats but...my confidence is sorely shaken.
I have until the 15th to take the phone back and am toying with the idea of swapping out one for a "newer" one, as Ive read that people with compaints similar to mine have done so and had great success with their "newer" replacement phones, but theres also the possibility that this is just a problem with the GNex as a whole, or a large batch of em so that I could switch out again and again and I'll always get one with a defect of some kind, that wont be able to be fixed with an update, and I'll be stuck with my super expensive, super awesome phone that works poorer than a cheap prepaid moto flip phone.
Im wondering if anyone else is having these issues and how they plan about going about it. In my mind, if I swap out this phone and am stuck with another "lemon"(if thats even the problem, a QC issue) then Im stuck with that one indefenetly. I talked to the verizon rep in the store and asked that if I wanted to bring it back for a refund, to wait until the bugs are officially sorted out, would I have to pay the restock fee? The answer was an absolute and cold "yes". Im cool with restock fees, but not if the device I bought has any many issues as this phone I have, and many of you out there as well. Im very torn. I've had a taste of ICS and dont wanna go back to anything else. Its possible to wait till ICS comes to the Droid Razer, which had a nice screen, better battery life and a signal stronger by 20dbm then the GNex. Also, I havent seen nearly as many problems with reboots, forceclosing and droped signals as with the GNex. But still...I just want the GNex to be "the one".
Anyone have any experience swapping out their phones for "newer ones"? The woman at verizon did a hard reset and noted it in my account but would not yet do a sim card swap or reactivation, as (Im guessing) she just wants to take away as much time from me as possible before the 15th comes. A hard reset does nothing. I still get the reboots and signal issues with a clean slate. Do we think, for sure that the issues myself and a lot of you are in fact software related, eble to be fixed via updates? Or is it still possible that this device is mechanically flawed? And that if we stick with out GNex's, even though we love how they feel in our hands, the screen, the OS, the google branding, that we will be stuck with something of inferior performance/stability? I know my question is kinda broad and not too specific. Im asking a lot, from any direction, any input from someone not wearing a verizon badge will help. The clock is ticking. I love this phone, I just want it or the replacement I get to work and be stable and it scares me, pinning my hopes on a replacement device or an update that has yet to surface, whose original purpose was to "fix signal issues with regards to the GNex" but now, it seems, is meerly out there to "better visualize an accurate signal strength" of a device that supposedly "doesnt suffer from any perfomance issues at all". Im guessing big red has never had their brand new top of the line GNex reboot on them while shutting down or simply doing its job: to serve as a mobile device.
Thanks for any and all input on what to do. Its like asking a buddy if the girl your seeing is right for you. All I want is some honest input as I am head over heels, less the fact that she doesnt work all the time and is so unstable she needs meds of some kind.
    Cheers.

Wow, well thanks for your replies guys. Thanks for not bashing me or anything like that. Its a very tough predicament a lot of us seem to be in. I have a problem with hyping myself up for things. I will never forgive George Lucas for the last Indiana Jones movie, but this device, its so much more personal. Our phones are all extensions of us and the fact that I and others have been salivating for this phone for quite some time, only to run into a bevy of issues, well...it doesnt make it any easier, as I still wanna believe in this phone. I still want it to be my daily driver. Im just glad Im not the only one stuck between a rock and a hard place. I had a pretty unflatering day with it today, with a couple of data conection issues, then went back to 3G mode have still had terrible servie (in a well lit 3G area) as well as battery woes. Im gonna go to verizon this upcoming week but its really hard trying to formulate a game plan. If I exchange it than I feel as though I've made my bed with this phone, for the next two years, but if I return it, Im still going to have to pay 15% of the $500 I forked out for it, to have only rented a lackluster nexus for 2 weeks. This...is not right. I stil dont have an answer, but im glad there are others like me. I still do like it, its like your mother meeting a chick and saying "shes not right for you" but you still find yourself talking through her logic and reasoning, hoping your still togather in the coming months.
I was wondering, Ive been thinking about the warrenty procedure with verizon and the nexus. I do have the full insurence but am not sure if I make a claim, weather or not they will send me a refurbished or used device (I dont want that). If I wait and dont exchenge or return it, or even if I do exchange it and still run into problems, will the warenty cover me if a hardware flaw is discovered on these earlier batches of nexus'? Im not new to being a first adopter to technology and Im not a fan of the whole iphone fad, but I did wait outside ATT for the first gen iphone and was much more happier with that thing than this. I didnt have a quarter of the problems of dissatisfication as this thing. The word "bugs" is completely understated when talking about my experience thus far. Just wanna make sure Im covered. I dont know how much big red really has our backs and Im not fabricating the problems I and others have faced. I think we all deserve a pat on the back for being so paitent and willing to continue to give our GNex's more chances. I trust google too, or, at least I want to. I really hope I make the right decision and it all works out. I was reading another review today which said a scary reality that I cant stop thinking about. In a few months we're sure to see a bevy or 4.0 devices and when that comes, the GNex may lose its one redeaming attribute. If it still has these types of problems (Signal issues, reboots, stabilty, batt power, etc) then we are stuck with what is basically an outdated lemon for the next two years. A lemon that was supposed to be king of the hill for some time, and which we all paied way, way too much for. Im sad I missed out on the Nexus one and even sader about the Nexus S. I know the S has had similar issues when it first came out, I just am scared going day to day, hoping a fix arises. They were eventually fixed (for the most part). Hoping so with this device...its just a terrible feeling as Im unhappy yet want it to work, desperatly.
And 21stNow: I like your question of weather or not I'd be willing to put up with this stuff until March 2012...I can answer right now, unequivocally yes. I love the phone (or atleast I want to love it that much). But Im very scared in the possibility of there being a major hardware issue or them just never correctly addressing the issues, leaving us GNex users out on the learch. Ive seen it with other pieces of tech. The fact that big red admitted there was an issue then turning around and saying that theres nothing wrong with the phone is a slap to myself and every one else whose had signal problems, reboot issues, etc. Furthermore, the fact that I got a phone that doesnt work as well as others who rave about not having one of these issues is disturbing. So I and others just got bad luck, with a bad batch? I find that hard to believe. We paid just as much, if not more (I had to get the accessory pack with my store when I bought it so that jacked up the price considerably) and should not be the black sheep of the gang, while others run free without issues or worries about their beloved device. Why cant either all the GNex's either work 100% or not? Its terrible, hearing both sides of the experience. This is what keeps me up at night while the clock nears the 15th. But at least I still have a horse in the race as I have yet to take it back indefentely.
We are not alone in our feelings and troubles.

  • What is JSF really all about?

On another thread on this forum somebody posted these two very interesting articles, which for me helped clear up a lot of the confusion about what JSF is about.
    http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/article.php/3322641
    http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/article.php/3324521
But for me anyway they raised a bunch of new questions, which I am wondering if the JSF team can comment on? According to the articles, JSF is not an out of the box solution. It is really a framework for building frameworks and not for building applications. So far, after playing around with JSF for a few weeks, it seems to me that this is a true statement. Now here is the confusion:
    1) JSF is supposed to prevent the fragmentation and vendor lock-in caused by all these non-JSF frameworks out there. But if each vendor needs to build additional infrastructure to make JSF into a suitable tool for application development what prevents fragmentation and lock-in caused by multiple JSF frameworks. Right now the problem is that a new Java web development framework pops up every day. It seems to me that in a couple of years a new JSF compliant framework could be popping up every day. So how does JSF hope to improve the current situation?
    2) I am currently doing a study on the feasibility of creating such a JSF compliant framework, but it seems like a very risky proposition. The early risk is that JSF has too many quirks to really build a proper framework without access to the underlying implementation (my limited research has indicated this). Once all the "version 1" issues get shaken out, the risk becomes that in a few years JSF will decide to become an out-of-the-box solution and blow every other JSF compliant framework out of the water. It seems that we would have to be part of the expert committe on JSF to reduce the risks to a reasonable level. It seems like only companies on the expert committee are allowed to lock developers in. Any other vendor gets frozen out by the risk. So can a small player join the expert committee for future JSF versions? What is the criteria for joining?
    3) A lot of people on The Server Side are ripping JSF for being too JSP-centric, which seems wrong to me. While JSP has a lot of flaws, it seems to me that most of the JSF users will be using JSP because it's the standard. So my concern is the opposite? I've asked a few questions on this forum and the answer has been, that there are limitiations in JSF when used from JSP, but not using JSP and creating my own view handler would be a solution. It seems to me that JSF has to work best in JSP because that is what most people will use. The answer to any question should never be: "it will work better if you don't use JSP". Otherwise I'm better off writing my own templating engine, which leads to more fragmentation, lock-in etc...

Here is a quote from the article:
"A standard for Web application development with visual components such as buttons, frames and radio buttons, JSR-127 was never intended as an out-of-the-box development tool. But judging from the negative reaction of some programmers so far, that's what they were expecting.
Craig McClanahan told internetnews.com that many programmers were expecting a working implementation of a framework that lets coders create Web applications using visual components. Instead, they got a specification that runs underneath the framework to allow portability between different tools. "
Seems to me this is true, especially since there are only a handful of simple components, validators and events. It seems that somebody has to build it out more, either tool/component vendors or business app developers. I think for the most part business app developers aren't going to want to do this. If you have to build extra infrastructure it kills the extra productivity you get from the component model. If it's component vendors it seems to me that the components could be generic an move from one JSF implementation to another, but I'm not sure how third party components would integrate with third party tools from other vendors.
For example, if I was to write a component library and a Dreamweaver extension to let users "paint" my components, I would have to hard code the Dreamweaver extension to generate and interpret the specific sets of tags in my library. It seems to me that this is a general problem, that the tool tends to get bound up with the library. Maybe really smart tools could be built to handle UI components in a generic way and let you import any tag library, but I think this is much harder to do with tags then with Swing components, because very often a single visual GUI component is a composite of many tags, so how do you explain the interrelationships to a tool in a generic way. It seems you would need some very clever and complex meta-data, or some way to attach generic tag editors to components that could ride along with the components from tool to tool. I haven't seen that in the spec, but maybe I'm missing something.
Now, if a vendor decides to use a different templating engine altogether, which seems to be what a lot of people want and the spec and implementation seem to incourage, then all bets are off. The tools and the template have to be bound up together.
So once you pick a templating engine, a vendor tool and a component library for your application, it becomes difficult to to switch to another engine, tool and component library unless you want to abandon tools all together and just use a text editor, or rewrite your user interface. You're back to lock-in and fragmentation, same as now.
Now as a potential component vendor, I see this as a big risk. I write a component library and tool and so do a million others and we compete on the merits of our tools and libraries (I'm very comfortable with that). But developers start complaining about the fragmentation, and the only solution is for the extra infrastructure to be built right into JSF so it's standard and every tool can manage the same tags. Now I have to rewrite my tool, and my component library is worthless. So do I want to become a component vendor? Maybe if I was on the expert committee and I could prevent new standard JSF features that blow me out of the water. Otherwise it's a very risky undertaking. And statements like this in the spec "It is anticipated that the number of standard component classes will grow in future versions of the JavaServer Faces specification." don't help anything. If I'm a developer should I use a third party library or wait? If I'm a potential vendor should I even bother?

  • Do_run(): rtld hand not shaken

Im compiling my program from command line using f77 on a Solaris 9 system. Compiling and linking goes fine, when i try to start debuging using sunstudio -E 'myexecutable' the IDE fires up and it stops on the first line, when I try to step forward I get the following errors:
    Running: <executable name>
    (process id xxxx)
    terminating signal 9 SIGKILL
dbx: warning: do_run(): rtld hand not shaken
dbx: Cannot open psinfo -- No such file or directory
    dbx: Cannot start execution

    For me specifically
    OLD:
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/lib/32:$ORACLE_HOME/lib/32
    NEW:
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/lib
The environment variable had 32-bit library directories in it's path instead of 64-bit.
The reason that this seems to be important, is because on older platforms 32-bit was the default and on Solaris 10, 64-bit libraries are the default.
Removing all references to 32-bit did the trick for me.

  • I install window 8 and Unfortunatly all drive format. And all drive mix, now i have only 1 DRIVE C. I want Bit locker Drive's data Back

Last sunday i install a window 8 and this window format my all drive & make it 1 drive (DRIVE C). Before all of this i have 5 drive in different size with 1 Bitlocker protect drive.
So i try data recovery software to recover my data. i got back all my data without that ( bitlocker ) protected drive.
so please guys help me how can i get back data from bitlocker protected drives.
    please please help me.

    Hi,
I sorry for your experience, but there is no way to recovery the data encryped by BitLocker untill now.
BitLocker is designed to make the encrypted drive unrecoverable without the required authentication. When in recovery mode, the user needs the recovery password or recovery key to unlock the encrypted drive. Therefore, we highly recommend
that you store the recovery information in AD DS or in another safe location.
Please refer to the link below for the statement:

  • Can I show a color bar instead of a color bullet in iCal Monthly view for all my events in all calendars?

In the Monthly view of iCal the only events that show a color bar in the event is the Birthday Calendar. All other events in all my other calendars only show a color bullet next to the event (unless I click on that event which then shows as a color bar). I would like to know if it is possible for all the calendar events to have a color bar in the monthly view instead of just that tiny color bullet.

    Greetings Judith,
Before making any attempts at deleting calendar data, backup what you have just in case:
Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
iCal has an automated function located in iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed.  By typing in a value for days you can tell iCal to delete all events before that time frame.
    Example:
    Today is 4-16-2012.
If I wanted to delete all events prior to 1 year ago (4-16-2011) I would type in "365" for the number of days.
Once you type in the number of days you want kept in iCal, close the preferences and then quit iCal.
Re-open iCal and check to see if the events are gone.  If not you may want to leave it open for several minutes and then quit again.
Once the events are removed go back to  iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Delete events "X" days after they have passed and make sure the check mark is removed to prevent future deletion.
    Hope that helps.

  • Error message iPod cannot update b/c all of the playlists no longer exist

Hello. I have been getting this error message. "Songs on the iPod "MAR(the name of my iPod)" cannot update because all of the playlists selecting for updating no longer exist." And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist. I have a feeling ths might have to do with the fact that on vacation the person I was visiting gave me a gift of putting all of his music that would fit into the external hard drive part of my iPod, and for the past week or so I have been putting that music onto my 40 GB portable hard drive at home. I suspect I took a vital folder out of my iPod by accident. Right now I have the folder iPod_control if I open my iPod up in My Computer. Am I missing something? Right now my iPod is empty because iTunes made a composite playlist last week and I deleted it thinking I could get my real playlists back. Can you help me, or reccomend a site/someone who can? Thank you.
    PC   Windows XP

    hiya!
And my playlists are still on the left side in my iTunes. They do exist.
let's just doublecheck this. folks get this message if they have "automatically update selected playlists only" selected in their itunes "ipod" preferences tab. so bring up that tab ("edit > preferences", click "ipod" while the ipod is showing up in the source list), and do a playlist by playlist crosscheck of the playlists selected in that tab, and the playlists showing up in the itunes sourcelist.
is there any playlist selected in the preferences tab that isn't showing up in the sourcelist?
    love, b

i do not know what else to do, i have searched the internet and whatever i saw doable i tried.
when i check the cd drive in itunes i had gotten a 4220 error, cnet advised to download a free error fixer, however, this error fixer gave me and enduser message, so that didn't work.
the diagnostic for the cd burner read that i had to put in a formatted disc with content so i did and there are the results of that were that it read the cd and that the 4220 errir code was encountered last time there was an attempt to burn.
and 'could not open cd handler 32. there is a problem with the installation of the drive in windows or the drive contains a copyprotected cd.
the above is not the case as it also popped up for me to import cd to itunes.
i tried to copy and past the entire contents here but it would not allow me to paste.
    please help!

I too have only recently encountered this problem. I have been able to burn disks before but it keeps making all these weird sounds. It might be a hardware problem but the fact that everything else that uses a disk works I doubt it.

  • Format C drive, what steps to take for retaining all data of iTunes?

    Hello
I want to format my C drive of Laptop and shift my itunes to E drive. I'm on windows 7. C drive is having itunes and in that I have synced my 2 iphones and 1 ipad.
Now I want to format the C drive and want to retain all the data, backup, media etc of my synced data with the itunes.
What I've done is that I transferred my music location from C to E drive by using apple forum discussion. I changed destination to E drive in ADVANCED TAB in Edit-Preferences. Then orgainzed data. That was successful.
Now please help me on what to do next so that i can retain my all my data of itunes safe before formatting my C drive.
    Thanks in advance

This definitely isn't intended as a substitute for tt2's tutorial (which is comprehensive and more detailed - in case of any differences I'd follow what's stated there), but in summary you should be doing the following.  I've assumed that, as per your original post, you've changed your media location to E:\iTunes and consolidated the library.  You now have a "split library" where:
E:\iTunes contains a folder called iTunes Media which in turn contains several subfolders such as Automatically Added to iTunes, Audiobooks, Music, ...
C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes contains the following folders and files:
    Album Artwork (folder)
    Previous iTunes Library (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library.itl (file)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
I'd suggest making sure that you're running the latest version of iTunes before proceeding - by default, this will be the version that you download and install when you rebuild your PC.
Before you change anything else, exit iTunes.  Now copy all of the folders and files in C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes to the same folder on your external drive (E:) that contains your media folder.  You should now have this:
or something very similar.  Now restart iTunes while holding down the SHIFT key.  You will see this dialog:
Select "Choose Library ..." and navigate to the folder on your external drive with the content as described above.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click OK.  iTunes will load - check that everything you expect to see is there.
You now have a "portable library", i.e., all your media and the files that iTunes uses to organize them.  You can use this in conjunction with any PC running Windows and iTunes (noting limitations regarding your iTunes account and authorizations).  As tt2 suggested in his response, before you go any further:
Make a backup of your new portable library to another device.
    De-authorize your iTunes account.
Back up everything else you need to retain from the C: drive of your PC (this is beyond the scope of this forum - there's plenty of help out there on various Microsoft sites, etc.).  Just remember that once you take the plunge and reformat the C: drive anything that you haven't backed up is gone ...
Once you've reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, install iTunes.  As befpre, hold down the SHIFT key when you start it up and select the iTunes Library.itl file on your external drive. You can then re-authorize iTunes and be back in business ...

  • I was given the wrong macbook when I gave mine in for repair.  I want to complain.  Also, they wiped ALL my data off the hard drive.  I want to complain to someone in authority.  How?

I am extremely disappointed and angry with Apple service.  I am a writer and booked three weeks in Spain so that I could finish my book.  On the second day my laptop cut out on me asI was working on it, so I took it to Goldenmack in Cadiz.  Not only was I given someone else's macbook when I went back to collect it, but then when I returned to the UK, the Apple shop in Brighton managed to delete ALL my data from the hard drive because I was unlucky enough to get a trainee on her first day.  I have since learned she should not have deleted my data without even running a diagnostic.  She told me she was going to 'restore' the drive.  I took this to mean she was going to restore my work.  But no!  She erased the lot.
I complained and eventually was put in touch with a supervisor, who I was told  had authority to resolve the issue. She said she would get the shop to phone me.  That was ten days ago and I'm still waiting.
Ok so there's nothing I can do now to get back the three chapters of my book that I have lost and didn't back up, but the  hard drive on this laptop is still faulty.  I try to back up my work every time I use the machine but as soon as I attach an external drive, the whole thing shuts down. I can't use it any more as I can't risk losing any more work.    This laptop is only just over a year old and this is just not acceptable, especially since I have really looked after it.
This is an appalling service I have encountered from Apple, and I am not going to ignore it.  I have contacted the young chap whose laptop I was erroneously given, and the repair of which I paid for! (although I did eventually get a refund),  to ask him if he had been given mine as well.  He said he had been completely unaware that his laptop had been given to me and he is furious as he had loads of "sensitive material" on it."  I have no idea in whose hands my laptop has been either, or indeed what damage it sustained while it was supposed to be in for repair.

    Contact Apple Support:

Be sure to refer to the repair ticket number.
    Sounds like a terrible mixup.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I tried to install latest OS update. Recd error installing. IT tried to load the upgrade in Safe Mode. Now system will not boot up. IT says I have to do a clean install which loses all data.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
    Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...

    Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend.

  • I will give $100 to the person who can solve this problem once and for all.

I'm not even kidding, dude. We can do PayPay, I'll mail you a check, whatever you want. That is how frustrating this is, that is how badly I want it fixed, and that is how much overtime I've worked lately thanks to being shorthanded at my place of biz-nass. I'm an hombre of my word, so if you actually come up with a solution that works, the cheddar will be yours. Okay let's hit it.
It's the skipping thing. First 10-12 seconds of a song - every song - will play fine, then iTunes skips, stutters, and basically does the god **** hokey pokey and shakes it all about. It happens most notably with songs that I double-click to play, but I'm pretty much noticing it on any song now after a transition is made. I've been using iTunes for ages and this didn't happen until the upgrade to 7.3. I have poured over these forums for nearly a week, tried every solution offered (even offered one of my own that actually worked for maybe four days before the whole thing started up again) and NOTHING. To save us all some time, here's what I've tried:
    - Downgrading. I'll admit I didn't do this correctly at first. I didn't remove everything according to the support guidelines, but I went down to version 6.05 and that did nothing to quell the skipping. I upgraded back up to 7.3 because hey, why not, and attempted the remaining trial fixes. I have since removed both iTunes and Quicktime, step my step according the the guidelines, and not only have I downgraded to my current running version of 7.2, I put both of the programs on my F drive (as opposed to the default C drive), my gigantic bonus internal drive where I typically keep nothing but my giganto music library. I thought putting the app on the same drive as the music might fix things. I thought wrong. Dead wrong. Dead diddly dum iddly wrong.
    - Quicktime settings. My settings for Quicktime have always been in safe mode with the output size at 16 bits. So when I saw this "fix" I just rolled my eyes. I used to have that dealio back in the dizzle when iTunes would just get all static-y and skip when I'd open other programs or even just minimize it, so that fix worked for that, but it's nothing compared to this. In simpler terms, that fix is like Superman, and this skipping? The kryptonite. Actually that's probably not a great metaphor, but we've got a ways to go and this is going to get mucho boring if I don't throw some chuckles out there. Ready for fix three? Giddy up!
    - Turn off cross-fade? It's never been on. I never really got the appeal of that, and also I think it resulted in some minor skipping back in the d. I also attempted similar fixes like turning off the equalizer, messing with the volume, closing last.fm, REMOVING an old album art retrieval program from back before iTunes got its **** together with album art, ANYTHING that might interfere with playback was turned off, removed, b-slapped, and sent crying home to its moms. Nada.
    - Recreating my library. This was the fix I offered someone else, because it actually did the trick for a few days. After an entire night spent reimporting 73 gigs worth of music, it played fine, but I did lose a ton of album art, playcounts, etc, so you can imagine how ****** I was when this wound up not being a permanent fix. I was beyond ******. I was livid. But I was taught in the dojos of my youth to channel my anger into productivity, and instead of sculpting a lovely bonsai tree, I set out to fix this pup once and for all.
    - That darn anti-virus! This was the final fix I tried, even though I wasn't using any of the culprit programs listed in the forums as causes of the skipping, and even those offering this as a solution confessed it was pretty hit or miss. But having tried everything else, having resorted to playing my music on MediaMonkey of all things, I figured I'd give it a shot. I used (reason for the past-tense forthcoming) AVG Anti-Virus, Lavasoft AdAware and something called Spyware Doctor that I think just came bundled with XP. I removed all of them. I had just done a virus scan recently to see if that's what was causing this, so I figured I'd be okay until I could redownload them after this fix wound up not working. And it didn't work, so there's that.
There may be a couple of fixes I've tried that I'm forgetting now, since I'm delirious after spending practically every night for the past week trying to fix this problem, while my girlf, Heather, sits and laughs at me while watching Clark and Michael on her MacBook. In fact, she's laughing at the $100 offer as I type this, but I assure you, if you offer a solution that works, the money is as good as yours. If you come up with a workable solution, I'll have to test and make sure it isn't temporary like the recreating my library thing, but I won't leave you hanging once I'm satisfied that it's fixed for good. I know it's unorthodox, perhaps illegal in some states, but I'm desperate here, peeps. The ball is in your court, and I beg you not to give up the rock.

I think the problem lays with Last.fm. I had the same exact problem as you. In your processes screen, end the task "lastfmhelper.exe" Last.fm still scrobbles. The tracks don't skip, although I notice there is still a bit of a lag in the first part of the song - but if you can deal with that, no skipping. I think you will have to end that task everytime you boot up your computer, or uninstall last.fm completely until they fix it; it is a bug in their software, as opposed to iTunes.
