OT: Apple Wireless Advice

Holy cow, I didn't realize Internet connections had become so
complex! I
had a simple dial-up connection until fairly recently, when I
finally
equipped my Dell computer with a DSL connection through
QWest. Though it
works fine, I swore the day I set it up that I'd migrate to a
new
service (long story).
Now I have an Apple MacBook Pro and am ready to jump into the
world of
wireless. But I'm thoroughly confused and would like to hear
what
solutions some of you use.
My computer is apparently equipped with the following, though
I don't
yet understand exactly what they're all about:
Airport Express, Bluetooth, Ethernet
When I set up my computer I was invited to choose from the
following
wireless services:
linksys_SES_46485
MandaNet
RC5011
ThePADD
Other Network
I couldn't even find much information about some of them
through Google.
It sounds like I can use Airport, Bluetooth OR Ethernet to
connect to a
wireless service offered by linksys... OR I could use
Airport, Bluetooth
or Ethernet to go wireless with MandaNet. Am I on the right
track?
This is what I'd like to do in a nutshell: I have a
telephone, a Dell
computer and a wireless Apple/Mac. At the very least, I need
to get both
computers hooked up to the Internet.
Ideally, I'd like to replace my telephone with a cell phone
and go
wireless all the way. However, someone told me that wireless
computer
services were hopelessly expensive; every time you surf the
Internet,
you're charged as if you were making a long distance phone
call.
I thought you just paid a flat fee, like $50-$100 a month,
and could
then spend as much time on the Internet as you want.
At any rate, how would you set up a cell phone and two
computers for
wireless service, and how much would you estimate it would
cost monthly?
If, for some reason, my five-year-old Dell can't go wireless,
could I
disconnect it from the Internet and download Windows
programs, updates,
etc. to my MacBook Pro, then copy them over to my Dell?
Thanks!

Hi David -
Just to give you an FYI - here in the US, Verizon Wireless
offers a service
for around $50-60/month that will get you internet access
anywhere you
travel (this is through a Verizon Wireless PCMCIA card that
plugs into your
laptop).
And yes, you are correct that your wireless enabled laptop
will only work
where it can find signals - once you find signals, if they're
encrypted you
won't be able to get on (unless you're running Linux and a
nice piece of
open source software ;) ) - if they're not encrypted you can
technically,
but not legally, jump on.

  • An error occurred while trying to access the Apple Wireless Device

    Hello All;
I just bought an Airport Extreme Base Station today and am all ready having problems. I am running a PC. I connected a Motorola DSL model to the Airport's QAN port and then I connected the computer to one of the Ethernet ports. When I first loaded the software that came with it, things worked perfectly and I was able to connect to the internet. Then, when I opened up the configuration file, and try to enter the configuration manually, I receive the error ... "An error occurred trying to access the Apple Wireless Device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again". When I try to open the Manual setup I get that error. Also why are the "settings" always grayed out ? I am connected ot the Internet but can't understand why I can't do a manual setup or change any of the settings. I reset my passwords and need to change them again but am unable to do that. Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.
    Tim

I am about to return this unit to the store I bought it at. I keep getting an error 6753 whenever I try to do any kind of configuration. Most of the configuration options are grayed out in the setup utility anyway. There is a ton of stuff about this problem on the internet. There are a few solutions offered like modify the tcp/ip properties but I sure can't figure out what they're talking about. Not everyone who buys this is going to be tech savvy.
I'll call tech Support tonite and if they can't offer a permanent soultion, I'm returning the Airport Extreme and separate dsl modem tomorrow and getting a wireless dsl router specifically designed for the PC.

  • Powering Apple Wireless Keyboard

I know this is a keyboard issue, but there's no keyboard Discussion area, and I'm using it with a MacBook Pro... thanks in advance for any help.
Using a new Apple Wireless Keyboard (the latest tiny aluminium one), it seems unclear how to use something as simple as the power button!
Apple say "The keyboard automatically powers down when you're not using it and turns on instantly as soon as you start typing. This intelligent power management means you'll get up to nine months of battery life based on average usage patterns." I get all that - sounds great! But, they go on to say "It also has an on/off switch for when you're away from your computer for a long time." But there's nothing to explain how that works. If I stop working, turn it off and walk away, there's nothing to indicate that it's turned off. When I come back to work, do I need to turn it on again or does it just power up automatically from the 'turned off' state? If so, What did the turning off actually do? Or this a 'fridge light' situation??
Point is, I see no point in the power button if the unit turns off automatically when I stop using it, and there's nothing on the device to indicate whether it's been switched off or on. And it has used the new set of batteries far too quickly for my liking (less than a week), especially considering that Apple suggest a long (up to nine months) battery life. Mind you, as is always the case, the "up to" terminology also means "down to" (zero) I guess.
Any help or advice much appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same questions after installing my keyboard. When I powered it up the first time, the power light came on and then went off. My power light seems to be off even when I'm using the keyboard to type. So that's not a valid indication of "sleep mode". However, I found to turn it off completely I pushed the power button, and the power light came back on. Then I pushed and held the power button for a few seconds. The power light went out and I saw a keyboard icon on my display with "connection lost" below it. Powered it back on by pushing the power button and was back in business immediately.
The manual is skimpy and confusing. It reads, "Note: When the Power On light is off, the keyboard is off." That's on page 3. Well it's working well right now, with the light off. If the manual is correct (it's not, but if it were) then my batteries would last a very, very long time.
Nice keyboard though, and very portable for a ModBook - if I ever get one.

  • Logitech mouse started to lag after connecting Apple Wireless Keyboard

    Hi,
I'm using Logitech Anywhere MX mouse with Logitech unifiying reciever on my iMac and everything was working perfectly fine until I have
recently bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard. For some reason after connecting the keyboard to my iMac my mouse started to lag.
I'm not sure how this is connected to each other as keyboard is bluetooth and mouse is wifi but at this stage I wish that my cable keyboard
    would never broke.
My whole Mac OS X software is up to date and so are the Logitech drivers (Control Center). Is any of the users expriencing such issues ?
    Any advices ?
    Regards,
    Jakub

Thank you for your reply, I have repaired the device but it didn't helped, but switching USB ports seems to do the work, although not sure why Anyways - thank you very much!

  • Is there a function key on Apple Wireless Keyboard to mimic the roundel key (home)?

While the cheap bluetooth keyboard has a home key, alas, Apple Wireless Keyboard doesn't have it to work well with iOS devices.  Can it be programmed into F5 or F6 then?

Good luck on the switch. I know I initially struggled with the layout change of many things. If I could give one recommendation/word of advice it would be:
    "Learn shortcut keys."
As a Windows user of 15 years, I had become reliant on my mouse (and the occasional alt/tab keys) that I never really explored the world of keyboard shortcuts.
After taking several weeks to finally get the hang of all the various keyboard shortcuts I zip through things now, almost rarely use my mouse except when an ease to use (or remember) keyboard shortcut is available.
Good links already posted above, just more of my 2 cents.

  • HT201321 my Apple wireless keyboad and Mouse dosent work since one Month after geting the new iMac 27 !Would  getting the Osx 10.7.Bluetooth utility  repaired after  updating  onto 10.7.5 &  Admin Tools 10.7.5 ?

    Hi Dears
My Apple wireless Mouse and keyboard   dose not work since one Month after getting the new iMac 27 !
The Bluetooth assistant could find the Devices for few seconds but can not pairing them ? at least get  an error
Operation system is already of version 10.7.5 updated ,but no use ?!
Could  getting the Os x 10.7.5 Bluetooth utility  repaired after  updating  to  Admin Tools 10.7.5 ?
When not ,than advice me please to repair or solving this problem ,

Your problem is likely due to
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1
I would recommend tracking down the app that uses this and unionist all it completely from  your computer. Also if you have upgraded the RAM on the machine you may have a RAM falling DIMM or it may have become unseated or it might not be the correct specs for your machine.

  • MacBook Pro + 1st Gen Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) Mouse = Headache

    Hi there.
I have recently purchased a Wireless Apple Mouse (not the current Mighty Mouse model, but the original no scroll-wheel one) off a seller on eBay who shipped it to me, and is adament the item is in full working order. I however, am not convinced.
I have spent the last two days trying to get rid of the lag I have with the mouse. It is unbearable, completely impossible to use. I have trawled the internet and indeed these forums to try and find a solution, but there is nothing that has worked. Restarting without Dashboard, killing every process possible, driver updates, OS updates, several different sets of batteries, unisntalling and reinstalling, tools to boost the speed of the mouse, the lot. I know my Bluetooth works fine, after having synced with several phones and other laptops without a hitch. Nothing will work, and worse still, everything I have read on the subject is related to the Wireless Mighty Mouse, effectively rendering the advice useless. Also, nobody seems to have had quite as dramatic a problem with it as myself.
The lag is unbearable. I have used wireless mouse and keyboards for years and they work wonderfully. The delay is probably about a quarter of a second, and the cursor jumps and stutters so it is not only a case of it moving slowly but behind my actions. I have noticed that the very moment I turn it on, if I move it quickly back and forth, I get a moment's teaser of how the mouse should work, with a smooth fluid action, but just for a second before the relentless stuttering. The buttons are unresponsive too.
I have checked the area for interference. I've disconected power supplies, turned off my phone's bluetooth, turned off my phone completely, turned off Airport, turned off my external Hard Drive, unplugged all cables. I am completely at a loss as to what the problem is, short of the mouse being broken in some way. But the seller is adament it was in working order (I doubt their honesty, and indeed, their intelligence after I told them I was using it with my MacBook Pro, and the responded asking if I was using it with a Mac and if I'd swopped the batteries).
So, does anybody out there have a clue if I'm right?

Elaborating on this still, as of yet, unsolved problem I'm having, I encounter an error whenever I download and try to run the apple wireless keyboard and mouse firmware 1.1. update. I try to open the .app and it fails every time, after numerous times of reinstalling, restarting, redownloading, the lot.

  • Apple wireless keyboard wrist rest

    Hi,
We are in the process of moving from the PC to Apple and I would like to ask if most users use a keyboard wrist rest with the Apple wireless keyboard? I was looking at the http://www.amazon.com/3M-Wrist-Keyboard-Antimicrobial-Compact/dp/B000X4WCJU 3M Compact wrist rest however I was concerned that it may be too high for the low profile Apple wireless Keyboard.
    Thanks for your advice.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Most ergonomic experts do not recommend wrist rests, and never for actually resting your wrists on them. Constant pressure on your wrists, especially while moving your fingers, is the road to carpal-tunnel syndrome. A "wrist" rest should actually be used only for the heels of your hands, and then only as an actual rest and not used while typing. You should type with your hands and wrists suspended, not resting on a surface, and with your forearms roughly parallel to the ground with your wrists straight and your shoulders relaxed. Few people set up their workspace so as to allow this position, but that's the position least likely to result in repetitive-stress injuries.
That in mind, then, using a pad just to rest your arms when not typing, just about any pad should work.
    Regards.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard lost connection when "command+space" is pressed

Hi, my apple wireless keyboard lost connection when command and space key was pressed. it does not lost connection when other keys combination was pressed. Are there any people has the same problem with me?
I am using Emacs all the time, the command and space key is the default short cut for Mark in Emacs. It is constantly used in my daily work. The wireless keyboard does not lost connection always, but it does lost connection sometimes. I have observed every time it lost connection, the command + space was pressed. Really strange. Any advice?
I am using Macbook Pro 13inch Late 2012,  OSX 10.9.1, and Apple Wireless Keyboard

Got the keyboard working again, here how incase it can help anyone else:
I borrowed a USB keyboard to allow me to get past the pasword login.
First I rang disk utitlity to repair any permissions. I opended up the app 'Bluetooth Setup Assistant' selected 'Keyboard' then I turned the keyboard 'on' so the green light is flashing' and then hit continue. At this point the keyboard appears in the listing of found items, hitting continue I am then given a unique pairing code. Enter this on the keyboard and hit 'Return' after a few seconds, the pairing is complete and by wireless keyboard is back and working again!

  • Error - 6753 "error accured while trying to access the apple wireless devic

Hi I have an Airport Extreme with time capsule 1TB. It worked fine with all my win XP and Macs at home but suddenly it started with the message in the header. it pops up " An Error accurred while trying to access Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6753.
What does it mean. I can access internet just fine and can print from the thing but can;t access my storage. Why is it happening? It all worked just fine before.
your advice will be much appreciated

Just a quick note: It says I have a macbook pro on my sigature. I do have one. I also connect a Dell XPS 600 (XP SP3), Dell 1420 laptop (Vista Ultimate), and an HP LaserJet 2420 (usually on the USB port, occasionally on the WAN ((RJ45))port. So far the airport has handled everything. I've had best results when setting it up from only the computer that uses the direct ethernet port. Add all the other stuff - wireless, USB - afterwards. Also, the Bonjour utility, which you can download from Apple's support site, is quite useful in setting up the printer.
If you want to see what the IP address of the airport actually is, you can go to Start, Run, type CMD (brings up a dos window), then type "ipconfig" (no quotes) and you will see an IP address for "default gateway". That is the address of the airport, when you have to use the "Other" option. Similarly, the command "ipconfig /all" (no quotes) will give you the IP addresses of all the devices connected to the airport.
OK, it wasn't such a short note.

  • Wacom Tablet causes Apple wireless keyboard to stop working.

My Wacom tablet/pen causes my Apple wireless keyboard to stop working.  While working on a photo in Photoshop using my Apple (usb) mouse to make selections the keyboard works fine.  When I use the Wacom Pen to make selections, not immediately but anywhere from five to ten minutes into it, I hear what sounds like a chirp from my computer (Mac Pro) and my keyboard stops working.  The command, option, control and direction keys still work but not the number and letter keys.  I have to connect a spare Logitech keyboard via USB in order to continue and not loose my work.  After awhile I will hear the chirp again and the Apple keyboard will start working.  This will continue to occur at irregular intervals.  Without the spare keyboard I've had to reboot my computer (loosing all the work on the photo) to get the keyboard working again, but only for it to reoccur.  Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

The Mac inherently keeps all input methods active, such that you could type alternate keys on alternate keyboards.
If you have third party add-ons that might change the way Bluetooth works, those would be the primary suspects.
Be sure all your Drivers are completely up-to-date, and batteries in battery-powered devices are still strong.
Bluetooth uses the same part of the frequency spectrum (but a different modulation technique) as cheap WiFi Routers, baby monitors, and microwave ovens. if you live in a busy apartment building, there may be very high levels of interference.

  • Apple wireless BT keyboard with TEXT MESSAGING?

I know that I can sync the Apple wireless bluetooth keyboard with the my iPhone 4, but I just want to verify that it will work with text messaging, in addition to the usual email, etc. apps. Frankly, that's the main reason I need it. I messed up my elbow from texting so much. I don't want to, but I MUST text a lot, so I figured I'd get the keyboard to save elbow injuries. Sounds silly -- lugging around a wireless keyboard in order to text... but it actually wouldn't be so bad. I do a lot of texting from my house, anyway.
One more thing -- The wireless keyboard can only be paired with one device at a time, right?

The Bluetooth keyboard will work with the messaging application.
I know I always turn the Bluetooth off on the iPhone so when I pull out my keyboard it is a bit of a pain in the ***. Granted I only use it with long emails on the road that would take an hour to write with the keyboard on the iPhone, so it's not too bad. The iPad dock keyboard will also work with the iPhone and iOS4.x so if you need a keyboard and don't want to deal with the Bluetooth than that is an option too, just a thought.
As far as the Bluetooth keyboard goes it can only be paired with one device at a time.

  • I need to erase the contents of my phone and restore to factory settings. Does anybody know how to save your texts so you don't lose them?  Can I back those up to iCloud?  My phone was very likely hacked (Apple's advice was to call the police!)

"I need to erase the contents of my phone and restore to factory settings. Does anybody know how to save your texts so you don't lose them?  Can I back those up to iCloud?  My phone was very likely hacked (Apple's advice was to call the police!)"
That was all I could put in the initial "box."  Then it brought me to this page with instructions on how to write a good sentence.
    Proceeding ...
After going back and forth between Apple, AT&T and the police (all telling me to go to the other two) I took AT&Ts suggestion and got a new number. One tech warned against doing a backup, especially on my Mac, saying if my phone had been hacked then whatever bug was there would then invade my computer. But nobody knows how to determine if the phone has been hacked or a virus was planted there. Unfortunately I know who would have reason to do such a thing and all I can say is that he is at the top technologically and could easily do it. Almost impossible to prove, however.
So I need to preserve my text messages and my emails as well. I backed up my photos to that Microsoft product (One-Drive) and it froze (Surprise, Surprise) with four short videos to go, and no way of stopping that (when I tried it crashed repeatedly) so I'm in crisis mode here.
    Help ...
    Running 8.0 on 5S
    Thanks!

Betty I don't know if you fixed your hacking problem but I feel your pain. I've seen some strange things going on between my iMac and my iPhone and Apple has told me the same thing, call the police which I have done. The hackers have stole 500.00 out of my checking account have access to every internet account I use and no matter how often I change the password their right back on the account. I closed my FB account 3 times only to have someone reopen it. Right now I've got a link in my reading list (Safari) that if I click on it, it allows me to log onto my FB account anonymously.
I've seen a green folder come out of no where while I was trying to delete my passwords out of keychain when that green folder was put into the key chain I was immediately locked out. I than went into system preferences to try to make changes to my security settings, when I clicked on the icon it wouldn't open. I've seen log files of automator receiving commands and sending out my personal information thats on my computer.
I have a legitamate program called iExplorer that allows you to look at the contents of your iPhone back ups and saw a transaction someone made at the Apple store for some full length movies, some albums, ibooks and other apps but when I called the iTunes store and they said none of those items were showing up on my account. If their not on my account how can they be on my iPhone 6? One day someone was using my gmail account and unknowingly used google maps to search for an Italian restaurant, than a Mexican restaurant than a coffee shop and their search showed up on my iPhone but I didn't have my gmail account installed on my iPhone 6. Using my computer I logged onto my gmail account and looked at the maps history and sure enough there were the searches when I'd hover my curser over the link it gave me the longitude and latitude of the where the hacker was when he was using google maps. I know whoever reads this thinks Im crazy but I've documented everything and can prove the things that I have mentioned in this post actually happened.
One day I had my laptop (pc) and my iMac next to each other as I was using both. when I clicked on airport it showed that my laptop and my iMac had made a connection and were actually communicating with each other. I know I didn't do it I don't know how. The iMac was logged into my iCloud account while my laptop wasn't. I have formatted my iPhone at least a dozen times, Apple and an Apple retailer have formatted my hard drive not to mention the numerous times I have formatted it but the hackers keep getting on my devices. Im formatting my lap top at this very second because during the course of the night I left the ethernet cable plugged into it and they locked me out of my c: drive, and configured the system so I can't download any updates from Microsoft, overtime I type in www.microsoft.com it changes to ww38.microsoft.com which takes me to a blank page. I right clicked on the page I was redirected to and read the java script and couldn't believe that someone had actually configured Internet Explorer to redirect me to a blank page when I tried to go to Microsoft. Apples answer to all this is there was nothing wrong with my iPhone or my iMac and if I thought there was a problem to call the police which I have done.
Theres no doubt the hackers are reading this while I type it or will read it and I simply don't care anymore. I no longer email anyone, don't use my iCloud account and have taken precautions to protect my credit but if I ever find out who has invaded my privacy to this extreme the police are going to want to talk to me because Im going to hurt them like they've never been hurt before

  • I am considering using I Pad for a presentation and want to use it in a wireless environment and though a projector not a TV monitor. Can I use Apple TV and apple wireless base,

I am considering using I PAD for a presentation using a projector.  How can this be done.  will Apple TV connect to a projector and if so does the projector have to have an HDMI slot or is there some sort of adapter to convert VGA slot so it connects with Apple TV. I also want to do it wirelessly so does the Apple wireless device work for this purpose, is so what do I need to connect that to the Apple TV  and to projector.  So, ideally I want to be able to operate the IPAD without it being connected to cables and have the image procted on screen using a projector which only has the VGA slot not an HDMI slot. any suggestions will be appreciated.

It can use Apple Tv, but will require a wireless network as well. The Apple TV has an HDMI output, and depending on the projector it may connect directly to it through HDMI.
There are adpaters out there that will convert from HDMI to several other types such as VGA or Composite oir RGB. It would not be directly an Apple product as it would work with the HDMI cable rather than the apple TV or iPad directly.
    Basically your setup should be:
iPad  -> Wifi Network -> Apple TV-- HDMI Cable-->Adapter---->Projector
If the iPad is iPad 2 or above you can mirror the entire display to the projector through the apple Tv.
The Adapter would be something like this for instance:
    http://www.amazon.com/Sanoxy-HDMI-Composite-S-Video-Converter/dp/B0047PDBP0
    Or this:
    http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Component-Converter-Support-Surround/dp/B004F9XVBC
With that said there are projectors that can be used wirelessly from the ipad without the need for Apple Tv or any adapter.
Epson makes one and a proprietary App to use it.
