OT - CS4 Font Management

Since it didn't look like FontExplorer was going to be updated to CS4, I went ahead and downloaded trials of both Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontAgent Pro.
After giving each a chance for a week, I have to admit that FontAgent Pro worked flawlessly so I went ahead and ordered my copy.
Thanks for the suggestion Buko...FAP rules!

I'm using CS4 on a Mac Pro (Intel) managing fonts with FontExplorer X. There seem to be issues with fonts that are activated after logging in. Restarting InDesign or Illustrator doesn't help. And even logging out and in again may not resolve fonts not showing up even though FontExplorer X clearly shows fonts are activated. My only solution has been a full system restart with specific fonts set to be loaded upon startup before they show up in CS4.
Obviously, this was not an issue with CS3.
It looks like those with very specialized font needs using FontExplorer X with CS4 will need to wait for Linotype to update their software or auto-activation plugins before seemless integration can take place. Otherwise, there will be a lot of system restarts required to load special font

  • PC Font Management, CS4 and Windows 7

    I have a new PC.
Starting from scratch I had Windows Vista 64 installed as this was just before the Microsnot launch of Windows 7. I bought CS4 Design Premium and had this pre-loaded. I downloaded Extensis Font Fusion 2 and loaded that. After loading this I had issues with Illustrator crashing and also Indesign and Flash. Also Photoshop 64 pretty much wouldn't work at all. I removed Font Fusion2 and found the Adobe products were less flakey but still not solid. I then upgraded Windows to V7 64bit. This also improved matters though PS64 still wasn't 100% stable.I called extensis and they said that they had released a version that answered this issue, but since loading the latest version of Suitcase Fusion 2 Illustrator has become very much less stable and also PS64 is now unusable, which is a bit of a shag as I have paid to have 12 gB of ram in this machine which is only used by the 64bit apps.
I have called Adobe technical who were pretty unhelpful.
Has anyone found a good type manager for under £100 that actually works with Adobe CS4?

If you're working on a stand-alone machine, why not trying to work without font management?
I worked with suitcase 11,  and all went fine. (running on xp64).
Since we're in a network, we opted for universal type server and client, both working well. I'm sure that on the web the're several free managers can be found

  • Creative Suite CS4: Problems with font managing software

It seems that there are some issues of the applications of the creative suite CS4 with the font managing software MainType (http://www.high-logic.com/maintype.html).
With standard settings, CS4 no longer recognizes PostScript Type 1 Fonts loaded by MainType (which did not occur with CS3 and older versions). The only solution so far is this workaround:  Within MainType enable under "Tools -> Options" the option "Copy Type 1 Postscript fonts to Windows fonts folder" and CS4 will load these fonts again.
This seems to be a bug of CS4. Are there problems with other font managing programs?
    regards
    fabian

After reading tons of forums about this issue, it does seem to be an issue with CS4 not recognizing fonts the way that CS3 did. Wish they had mentioned that little feature when they released it. They even go as far as to say they do not support certain programs for type handling in Windows. Copying them to the system folder is a workaround, but it is not available easily in programs like Extensis' Suitcase, which is long overdue an upgrade. LinoType beta tested a new application for Windows, but when I sent an email to them asking about the release date for the their final version, their ignorant customer support sent me a link to their website pointing out that it is not yet available, and not answering my initial question of when.
I don't entirely blame Adobe, it seems as though a lot of companies have dropped the ball on this issue, and since many people have Type 1 fonts they've been using for years, they will have to repurchase (if available) those fonts in the newer OTF format which everyone seems to support. OTF is a much nicer format and more portable cross-platform, but it's simply inconvenient to not be able to use all of your fonts at your own discretion easily. I'm not sure what the big deal was with not including support for Type 1 fonts, unless that's most of the reason that the Adobe apps were crashing before... corrupt versions of the fonts they talked us into purchasing, etc... Adobe used to make ATM for managing postscript fonts, but it doesn't work on Vista to my knowledge. It would be nice if they would recommend a font manager other than the Windows system folder.
I figure Adobe was hoping that it would not be a major issue since their wonderful PDF format has taken hold for printing. Print shops do not have to install fonts before printing a piece anymore. Most people will read in these forums about the loss of support, throw up their hands and shake their heads, but do nothing about it. After all they too probably purchased the CS4 suite without knowing about this issue and have already spent their money. It doesn't look as though it's an issue on the Mac, but by the time you throw $3000 at an entry level Mac workstation and $1600 at the basic adobe apps, that's not a solution either. Especially when you have to go out and buy all new fonts anyhow, since the macs will not support the Windows postscript typeface formats either.
After doing a little price shopping for typefaces, I'm trying to try to keep using the few OTF and TTF fonts I've purchased since they're still working, since the prices of fonts these days are astronomical. I've installed a few fonts in the system folder, but too many and Acrobat distiller crashes. It's not cost effective to spend all of your income from design on $1600 font family sets, just to make changes to a document where you might have used a postscript face. Especially in this economy... It's another case of the investor getting rewarded for the release of an application and the customer is left holding the bag. Hopefully it's a bug, but not likely. It's probably some mandated decision by the higher ups in Adobe.
I'm sure larger companies with hundreds of employees probably have site licenses for typefaces in the OTF format, so for them it's not a problem, and since most people using PCs to do design opted for that platform because of the cost issue, Adobe probably doesn't care about them either. Maybe a solution will arise in the future, but it doesn't look likely. You will probably have to get the new formats of typefaces one by one.

  • Font management with InDesign and Windows 7

    Hello
I am presently looking to upgrade to Windows 7 and use InDesign CS4.  I have had a play with installing postscript type 1 fonts using the windows font manager and it seems absoloutley average, but it worked (I think).  I was wondering if you had any suggestions of what would be best practice in this setup.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for that.  I spoke to the team using indesign and they would love to move to Extensis Suitcase but they had experienced problems with MathMagic pro.  I am going to test this out and hopefully resolve it but I wondered if you had any knowledge of compatibility issues?
    Thanks again

  • Font Management & CS5

Anybody's font manager working with InD CS5?
PITA to open a doc in CS4 just to activate the fonts, then open in 5 to work on.

May I digress? My Dad always told me that "if you have more than 10 fonts (families), you're wasting your time and your money." [plus a handful of gingerbread faces for headlines]
How right he's proven to be... but his wisdom comes from his experience in his typeshop in Philly years ago... was basically a book type shop; never got into commercial ad work... too demanding schedule-wise. His favorite fonts? News Gothic and Palatino. We were the only shop in the Delaval to have Pal w/OS figures in both ital & roman; plus 12-unit news gothic figs for doing intricate tabular work. We could use 6pt, 12-unit figures (they were optically equivalent to 8pt 9-unit figures) and could be set solid while maintaining great legibility. Insurance companies loved us (actuarial tables), etc.
    sigh...

  • Font Management Guidance

Just installed CS4 for Windows. Currently using Extensis Suitcase for Windows (v11x). I don't believe that the "auto activation" feature works with CS4. What type of font management program that incorporates that type of feature would you folks recommend?
    Thanks in advance...
    ~Vince

I would recommend you stay clear of any auto-activation in Windows. We see a lot of reported porblems here that are solved by turning it off. I've been running without a font manager (still looking for one I like) since upgrading to XP when CCS3 was released, and I don't miss it that much anymore.

  • Best Font Management Software?

I'm currently using Adobe CS4 and FontExplorer X 1.2.3 with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.3). I recently found out that FontExplorer X 1.2.3 is no longer being supported or updated. Which font management software works best with OS X and the CS4 suite of applicatiopns?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

I use LFX, the free one, same as you. It works fine of 10.6.3 with CS4 and CS5 applications. Of course, since it is no longer supported, the auto-activation plug ins haven’t been updated to work with CS4 or CS5, but that doesn’t prevent the program from activating fonts manually or allowing me to use them in InDesign or Illustrator or any other program I try.

  • Font Management Problems - PLEASE HELP

    Hey,
We are have six networked computers who are doing ads/layout/pagination for a newspaper. All six computers are new iMacs, all running InDesign CS3. We have a standard set of fonts that I saved on our server. On each iMac, I created a folder on the hard drive called Messenger Fonts. Then I went into FontBook and created a new library called Messenger where I added the fonts. So I thought by doing each the same way, we would not have any font problems but we do –- LOTS of them. Mostly fonts such as Gill Sans, Helvetica, Times, etc. where there is a system version of the font plus a postscript version from our font collection. I have also downloaded Suitcase Fusion (trial) on a couple of computers but I still can't get all of our fonts in sync.
Could someone please help me with a FOOL-PROOF, rock-solid, step-by-step way to set up a small office where there will be NO font conflicts, missing fonts, etc., i.e. "start by deleting these fonts from these particular folders, then blah, blah, blah"
    HELP!!!!!!!
    Neil

That's a nice short list of fonts that will cover pretty much all minimal needs. The only place you'll see problems is mostly on the web. Many, many sites use standard Microsoft fonts such as Verdana, Trebuchet MS, WingDings and Comic Sans. They'll still display of course, but the page layouts may get thrown way out of whack from the absence of the fonts they're looking for.
I guess as long as no one installs an application, such as Office, that installs it own fonts, we should stay consistent, right?
You should. But even if they do install Office, you can delete every font it puts on the system. Office used to require at least Verdana and Trebuchet MS, but Office 2004 will run without them.
We have a manageable list so I just avoided using FontBook or Suitcase.
My thought there is that a good font manager is still a very good thing to have. You can just put the fonts you want to use in either the /Library/Fonts/ folder, or the Fonts folder in the currently active user account to activate, and remove to deactivate; but you run a bit of risk damaging the fonts by constantly moving or copying them all over the place. With Suitcase or MasterJuggler, you can activate/deactivate them from wherever they reside. Not that manually moving fonts in and out of a Fonts folder doesn't work, it's just much easier to use a font manager.

my Extensis suitcaseX 11.0.4 is no longer working with my system OSX10.6.8, what is the best and cheapest font management software to use that's compatible with this system and my existing CS design software?

If you upgraded to Snow Leopard, then it would seem that Suitcase 11 is not compatible with Snow Leopard and you'd need to buy Suitcase Fusion 3 for $99.95.

  • Barcode Font not available in PDF after adding to Font Management

    Hello CF experts,
I need to use a barcode font in a PDF document. I installed
the font in Font Management, but nothing happens when I attempt to
use it. I've tried to use it both in and out of PDF's, and it
doesn't work either way. It does work in normal HTML code if the
local machine has the font installed, but this isn't very helpful,
as I need it to be served up from the Server with fontembed for PDF
    usage.
Here is what the Font Manager shows:
    User Defined Fonts
Actions Font Family Font Face Font Type Useable In Path
    IDAutomationHC39M IDAutomationHC39M TRUETYPE PDF/FlashPaper
    /var/www/html/MM/IDAutomationHC39M_Free.ttf
I've tried using it in <font> tags, CSS Styles, etc,
    and nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hey SafariTECH,
The Server is the source for any fonts used? This hasn't been
my experience at all. Web pages don't embed fonts, but rely on the
clients PC having the requested font face installed.
My problem is that I have a unique need for a Barcode font to
be available to clients without having to run around and install it
locally. In concept I should be able to embed the font in
Flashpaper or a PDF and bypass the need to make the font available
    on each client's PC.
Is anyone successfully using the PDF "Font Embed" feature
this way using fonts installed in the Font Manager?
Is there any easy way to tell if the font's installed in Font
Manager are actually working and/or available?
    Thanks-

I installed Indesign CC on the admin side of my computer. It seems to open/work fine there but when i login as a user on the computer, it won't open Indesign because it claims it is missing the Font Manager.IndesignPlugin. It originally said it was also missing the Character Panel.IndesignPlugin but I copied and pasted it from the admin to user's plugin folders. That seemed to fix that issue. But, doign find/searchs of the file name on both the Admin side and users side, i I am unable to even find the plugin. Why is this happening and where can I find this?
So very frusturated. This is all after I've installed/uninstalled this 4 times already today because of other issues.

  • Font Management Software Switch

I recently ran into a font problem after installing Adobe Photoshop upgrade 12.0.4.
The process of reconciling this required that I uninstall my old copy of FontExplorer X, organizing my 4,500 fonts into a single and the proper location, and then validating all of those fonts in Font Book, as well as a type test script from Adobe.
Long story short, I now have thousands of fonts enabled and loading into my applications, and need to upgrade to either Font Explorer Pro of Suitcase Fusion. I should have done this in the first place and saved myself a lot of time, as I suspect that the absence of a working plugin for Photoshop CS5 upgrade was what done me in. But, back to our story.
My question is, once I've installed the new font managment application, how do I disable Font Book? Do I "simply" disable all but the system fonts?

Not sure it'll help, but start with Font Management in OS X.

  • Font Management 1 - I have a Bazillion Fonts but can't see them all in Photoshop.

Photoshop has an unacknowledged Font limit.
The workaround is to use a
Font Manager and only activate the fonts you need.
There are 6 commonly used Font Managers.
FontAgent Pro - the majority of Photoshop Users who participate on these forums seem to think this one is best. FAP is the most ATM Deluxe like. Auto Font Activation works perfectly for most, with no complaints being reported.
Suitcase - this seems to be the next most popular, however, Auto Font Activation seems to cause problems for some.
Font Reserve - this application was bought by the company that owns Suitcase Folk.
Master Juggler - this is a relatively new application for OSX.
Font Book - is built into Mac OSX since version 1.03. Apple have a useful Video Tutorial on using Font Book on their
    web site
Linotype FontExplorer X - this is the newest font manager for OSX. its free and is at beta version 3 as of this posting.

    oliburner:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's a common complaint. One workaround is to use one of the 3rd party keyword apps like Keyword Manager which will let you arrange keywords hierarchically.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Font Management problem InDesign CC

My InDesign CC crashed. When I try to reopen it I get this message:
Adobe InDesign does not recognize Font Manager.InDesignPlugin as a valid plug-in. Please reinstall the Font Manager.InDesignPlugin plug-in and restart InDesign.
Do I need to get a new Font Manager. I have been using Font Agent Pro and it worked for a couple of weeks fine with the Cloud Creative suite...but now it won't.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks! I reinstalled InDesignCC and when I was doing that I got a notice that Adobe was having some problem on their end and to come back later. I think some of this was a problem on their end. I followed some else's advice to deactivate something in the Utilities which I did. Anyway, it is working now but I have to reinstall InDesignCC again because when I did it was a trial version. I am a subscriber and need the permanent version.
    Thanks for your help.
