OT HELP! MacPro and FCS

So, I'm running FCP 4.5 HD on an 12" 1.33 iBook 1.5GB RAM. And, so far, it's worked great for the FCP part, but I also bought DVDSP 4.1 and encoding is sloooow. I have a 140 min project and it takes a full day/night. Plus I have to do it in multiple versions (with subtitles in 3 languages, without subtitles, NTSC versions and PAL).
Thing is, other than being slow, it really, really works well! Nonetheless the devil of temptation keeps whispering in my ear "macpro will rock! yes, it will rock! rock! rock! rock!". I'm somewhat addicted to unnecessary upgrades and I love gadgets, and I look for any excuse to buy shiny new stuff. But I'm trying to conquer this addiction, and help out my poor wallet. I usually work on documentaries and short films, but it's not the primary way of how I make my living (i.e. I am not a pro editor)... I do 3-4 projects a year.
Question: how do you go about rationally assessing when it is time to upgrade? I mean, yes, 10% faster is nice, but does it justify spending $X? Where's the dividing line?
Right now my wallet is in absolute terror as I haunt the online apple store configuring a fantasy machine... my credit card is sweating profusely and practically curling up in fear as I await advice here...

Ugh. You seriously DO need an upgrade - compressing is the most heinous of CPU tasks, and using an old iBook for this purpose must be like trying to build a house with nothing more than a teaspoon. But stop frigthening your wallet, and take a look at the Refurbished section of the Apple Store (the red 'Save' tag on the right) - right now you can get a 2Ghz CoreDuo MacBook for 1099. That would probably cut your 36 hour renders at least in half, at a wild guess. Or you could get an iMac for the same, which would probably be even better at the task. Either will be a MASSIVE improvement in your compression performance, though it's never going to be less than a few hours even with the fastest MacPro for a 140min movie.

Macpro and using a TV as another viewing option at the same time as display

Hi,
I have a MacPro and I'm trying to edit some footage but want to use my Radeon X1900 with one output going to my 23inch Apple display the other output going to my TV.
I have the setting in FCP veiw menu to "All Frames" & "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview (not Main)"
but either the playback is not on the TV or it only shows 1 frame at a time as if it is freezing when playing the sequence back, it freezes on both TV and display.
I want whatever I'm viewing in either the canvas or timeline to be displayed on the TV also, is this possible?
Getting rather frustrated!!!

Here Shane describes the setting in some AV options about "mirror desktop" I looked for this setting and found it was unchecked.
After checking it and trying again.... everything is perfect!!

Sync stickies on MBP and MacPro and iPhone?

i have finally settled on using notational velocity (which i love) to sync data between my MBP and my MacPro and simplenote to get these to my iPhone.
can i sync stickies between all three of these device? right now these only exist on my macbookpro and this is a big pain.

It's either the connection from the laptop to icloud or from icloud to iphone that's the problem. To find the answer, do the following...
Using a computer's browser log into icloud.com and then look at the contacts page. If the edits show up there, then the problem is from icloud to iphone. If edits are not there, then the problem is from laptop to icloud.
Whichever device the problem points to, verify that it is logged into the right icloud account and that Contacts is turned on. (System preferences>icloud on mac or Settings>icloud on ios device.

MacPro and MacBook Pro network setup

I hope someone can help me. Basically, I am trying to build a setup connecting my MacPro and MacBook Pro over a network sharing my DSL internet connection and one printer.
I currently have a Netgear DSL Router connected to my MacPro and need to add wireless connectivity for the MacBook Pro. I would like to leave the MacPro 'hardwired' to the router and share the printer over the Airport Express. Would this work or is another setup advisable?

Would the printer, connected to the AirPort Express, still be talking to the Mac Pro, which isn't directly connected?

MacPro and Airport Extreme

Hi forum members,
I bought a MacPro Dual Core 1 year ago. I did not purchase the Extreme card. Now I would like to use wireless on the MacPro and can see that the Airport card is built in. When trying to use Airport I always get connection errors. I can see in Network Utility that I would not need to purchase the enabler. So, do I have the Airport Extreme card or not? If so, how can I activate?

Sorry for the confusion.
I have a MacPro (10.4.11) with an inbuilt Airport Extreme card. I also have a MacBookPro (10.5.2) with a Airport Extreme card. To me the difference lies in the card specs and the firmware. MacPro: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87), Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.5). MacBookPro: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), 1.3.4. Both machines are just a meter away from the router.
I have got one Modem/Router which is a D-Link G604T. According to the research on the net it has got a 802.11g WLAN.
The MacBookPro has got full signal strengths all the time (over the last half year now), but the MacPro has got such a weak signal that he sometimes can't even connect or at least looses the connection quicly.
Would better antenna help on the router, or would you recommend to get a better card for the MacPro?

After reviewing your post, the iPod is not recognized in iTunes. A frustrating situation to be sure. You haven't mentioned what OS the computer you are using uses. You can choose what article to use either OS X or Windows from this quoted section.

You must initiallly activate iCloud from an IOS device or a Mac. You cannot inititally activated from a PC.

Probably dead if you have tried to charge it.
You should never try to charge or turn on a wet electronic device.
You should let it dry for a week or so, then try.

i have an intersting question for you, well my scenario is like i have to create a search help exit using some function module cause i didt found table for my search help but i can find the value through FM, i know we can create a search help exit and then assign it to collective search help,

First see if placing the iPod in Recovery Mode will allow a restore.
Next try DFU mode and restore.

I wish I could share the two screen shots I took, but this question site doesn't have the option, so I guess I'll describe where Bing is showing up.
In the left hand of my browser, just to the right of the back and forward arrows, there is speech bubble with a black eye ball or something. I found out it's Bing-related by clicking on it. There is no option to remove it with either left or right clicking on it.
Also, in the right hand corner of my browser, at the very end of all my tabs, there is a white rectangular box with an orange "b" and a magnifying glass symbol. It will not respond to anything I try to do to it either, but if clicked it opens a new tab with a Bing search dialogue box.
Finally, any new tab I open automatically opens to the Bing search dialogue box (versus Google).
I need to get specific, step-by-step instructions for removing this Bing stuff from my computer. As I said, I have already gone through all steps outlined in the article I mentioned above as well as not been able to locate Bing in my control panel.
Please help. I'm certain others are having this same issue. I use Windows 7 and Firefox. Thanks.

I can log into hotmail but cannot open my emails or go to Sent items or anything. I have gone on the Hotmail Help Forum and MANY people are having the same problem. Hotmail say we should use Internet explorer and they do not really answer about using Firefox.
People using Firefox 3 and 4 are having problems.
Also, i downloaded Forefox 4.0.1 and it was not fully compatible with Kaspersky - has this problem also now been resolved?
In summary - is Forfox 4.0.1 NOT comaptible with Hotmail and Kaspersky?

Sorry, I can't help with Hotmail, beyond clearing the cache - I haven't used it for 11 or 12 years now. Surprising that a Firefox 3.6 version would have trouble there, as 3.6 has been around for well over a year and Hotmail problems are usually with a recent release of Firefox.
IMO, if Hotmail support can't help you with Firefox issues on their website and can only recommend using IE, maybe it's time to change web mail service providers. My advice is to signup with a different web mail service, one that takes Firefox seriously. Then set up forwarding in your Hotmail account to have all your Hotmail emails forwarded to that new account. Then slowly transition your email contacts over to the new email address over time. As long as you log in to Hotmail every month or two, your account there should stay active and emails sent there should get forwarded to the new email account. I have done that three times in the last decade, and the first one I transitioned from was still forwarding email thru the two intermediary accounts to my current account until last summer when that service finally changed owners and they wanted all new accounts set up or transitioned to their new software - which I didn't do - and I hadn't even signed into my account there in over 4 years and "forwarding" was still working.
