OT: Margin recommendations to make creep less noticeable

I'm working on a booklet that's sized at 3.625" W x 8.75" H.  I have no idea how many pages the book will be, but it's been as high as 112 pages before.   This book is saddle-stitched, so creep is a problem.  However, multiple people will be working on the book, and I have no idea how many pages it will actually be.  So I see no way to do incremental adjustments.  I was just thinking I'd use a wide-enough margin to be safe throughout the book.  Anybody have any recommendations?  Would 2-pica be enough?  Or too much?  (I'd like to use as little margin as possible.) Should I plan to make the inside margin wider than the outside?
I read somewhere that using a bleed on the top or bottom would make creep more noticeable.  I don't get that though.  Why would it matter if it were on the top?
The book is printed on 60# paper and gets quite thick.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Phyllis

Thanks Peter, I'll make the margin larger.  2p6?  Full half-inch?
And you're right that my top bleed would also go off the side (not sure why I'm being dense about that).  I actually don't know how to adjust for creep as this hasn't been a real issue on anything I've worked on.  I assume you make the inside margins larger at certain intervals (?), but I don't know when.  Unfortunately several people will have to work on this project (the others only barely functioning in InDesign), so I doubt I can be too precise about this.
I do have in a request for perfect-binding prices, but they'll probably stick with the cheapest thing they can get.  These booklets pretty much only have to survive 3 days.  But if it's not crazy expensive, I'm going to try to get them to at least consider perfect binding.  That would mostly eliminate the creep problem, wouldn't it?  My understanding is that perfect binding means the pages are grouped as several signatures and glued (never so many that creep would be seen).  Am I right about that?
Thanks for your input,
Phyllis

    It's not the comment field which is a restrictive description.
    In fact it's the window's background.

  • Is there anyway to make a crack on an iPad less noticeable?

    I dropped my iPad by accident today and I'm looking for the least expensive way to make the cracks less noticable. I can't get a new case for it until Christmas.
    The crack itself isn't very big but it's big enough to cause a bit of a stir. I don't want to use my iPad until that crack is in someway remedied, so I won't worry about it getting any bigger.

  • How should I partition data across 2 hard drives to make for less latencey?

    Hello all!
    I am using a Dual 2.7 G5 Power Mac and I just bought the Hitachi 500GB internal hard drive to supplement the stock 250GB drive that came in the tower. I mostly want to orient my computer for the needs of a home recording studio. I am Logic Pro user and I want to streamline data retrieval as efficiently as possible.
    Now, I also have a good deal of other junk on my computer (video and iMovie projects). I would love an organization solution on how to partition everything that I have filled my 250GB drive up with across both hard drives. I'm aiming for a solution that will be good for the long-term as I continue to add more and more stuff (audio/music related and non) onto my hard drives.
    Here are a few of the primary concerns which have held me back from just diving in:
    I have several DVD's worth of audio samples (for use with software sampler) that I have yet to load onto this computer. Should I load/move all of my samples onto the secondary 500GB drive or would the streaming retrieval of all of that content from the secondary drive add extra latency and slowdown when the host application running these tasks and retrievals is ran off of the primary drive (the 250GB drive on which the OS is installed)?
    Or should I just move Logic to the secondary 500 GB drive as well as all of the audio samples and run all things having to do with audio production off of that secondary 500GB drive? Would running such a CPU intensive app from the secondary drive make a performance difference compared to running it off of the primary drive? Does it matter whether or not a program is run off of the hard drive where the OS is installed?
    Or should I find a way to have all apps running from the primary 250 GB drive WITH all samples (streaming and non-streaming) also on that drive and just have my project files and audio recording sessions (which eat up large portions of space) located on the secondary 500 GB drive? Or would I run into a noticeable latency with having the recorded audio sessions ran off of the secondary hard drive when I am running the application that retrieves them (Logic) off of the primary drive?
    Where do I put my pro apps? Where do I put my audio samples (mainly for EXS24, SampleTank, and BFD)? Recording sessions? Everything else?
    Please, experienced users, what should I do to garner the best performance out of my Mac?
    Thanking everyone in advance,
    Matt!
    P.S. I am running OS 10.4.6 and using 4.5 GB of memory.

    Thanks you guys. X, that is interesting to read. Chap, I see what you are saying. But I just found these two FAQ's from BFD's website. How do you feel in reference to them? Is it me, or do these questions somewhat contradict each other? :
    Is it a good idea to put BFD on its own partition on my audio drive? [top]
    In general, no. If your harddrive is partitioned and you are streaming from both the BFD partition and your own tracks, this will lead to the hard drive read head jumping back and forth between the two partitions, which may reduce performance. Also, if you are streaming non-BFD audio from the same drive, this reduces the bandwidth available for BFD streaming.
    On which hard drive should I install my BFD data? [top]
    FXpansion recommends, in order of performance preference (first is best):
    1) A dedicated SATA or IDE internal drive, 7200rpm or above
    2) A dedicated external firewire drive (do NOT chain the firewire drive with a digi002 or other firewire audio interfaces!)
    3) A dedicated external USB2.0 drive
    4) An internal drive shared with the data from other heavy disk-accessing programs, eg the operating system (virtual memory swap files), or another disk streaming application such as your host sequencer (audio tracks) or Kontact etc etc.
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7Ghz 2.5gigs of RAM   Mac OS X (10.4)
    So it sounds like they recommend BFD having its very own hard drive. I dont have the resources for that right now. So I wonder what would be better: Sharing the OS drive with BFD as mentioned by X and used as the last resort from FAQ #2, or split my second drive via partition into Samples (including BFD audio) and Storage for projects and raw, recorded audio sessions.
    If only I wasn't such a perfectionist. I would get so much more work done! Thanks again guys. I am indebted.

  • How to make Forms less dependent of client PC ? (Best Practice?)

    Hello,
    We are on Forms 10g (and I also noticed the same pb with previous versions)
    We built quite big applications that use Webutil and jInitiator (not Java plugin)
    The application is used via Web only.
    At the deploiement of the applications, we experienced many difficulties due to specific configuration of Internet Explorer (or another browser, Firefox) of each one person of the company
    I suppose this situation has also been experienced by others...
    Do you have any suggestion of best practices for making such application less dependent of the client PC configuration ?

  • Can i make it less compressed?

    hi - idvd complete newbie here. i have created a short animation, which is about 9 mins long. I have exported it (from after effects) as an uncompressed quicktime, which uses a whopping 50 gig space. In idvd I selected 'best quality' not 'best performance' but when I burned it the final movie still only used up 200 mb of space, and the quality isn't great. It's the only thing on the dvd apart from the menu. Is there a way I can make sure it uses all the available space on the dvd, rather than compresses it that much? thanks for any advice. Lucy

    Nope. But try Best Performance and see if that's better. If you have a DL burner, you could tell it to encode a disk image for DL and see if that works on a SL DVD-R.

  • How to make animations less chopy? opinions, advice require

    Hi guys ive been using flex now for about 2 years. Love flex dont have to much to  complaint about it is  extremely flexible however i have one simple question that i just dont quite understand and im hoping someone here can shed some light. Picture this. I have a grid and a call to a webservice. when i click on the grid item it makes a call to the webservice once the webservice returns the array of items i  want to play an animation. But what i have noticed is that at the point the dataprovider is assign to the grid  the application basically freezes. This is due to the fact that by assining the dataprovider to the grid flex internally is looping the colletction and passing it to the grid. Well if you are trying to play and animation while the dataprovider is being assignt the animation gets choppy... is there any techniques around this? I would really love to hear about how other people have overcomed this challenge or I'm i the only idiot thats dealing with this.
    Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Miguel

    If you use XML to get data from the server, then unmarshalling of data to create objects takes a heavy toll on the processor.
    If you use Blaze DS or LCDS, deserialization from binary data is a breeze and it doesn't hit the processor as much.
    Now, if you don't want to change your service, consider using TimeSlicing:

  • 2 recommendations to make life better for us all!

    Here are a couple suggestions I have based on my iPhone usage:
    1) In order to make it even easier to navigate the pages on the home screen, how about adding the ability to scroll the page number dots at the bottom of the screen similar to the way text is scrolled through (slight magnification as the cursor moves down the line), then on the release the screen would shift the highlighted page.
    2) App Store downloads: for people like me who periodically scroll through the app store on the iPhone and see multiple apps that are wanting to be downloaded, it's somewhat of a pain to have to wait for each app to install itself, and then have to re-open the App Store to download the next desired app. How about the ability to queuing app store purchases in a similar way updates are already handled, and then have them all download at once? This can't be that hard to do since it is already being done with the updated apps. This could also be applied to the iTunes store app.
    Think about it!

    Has anyone had a go at making the Apple logo black or charcoal on the black

    finish looks a little more durable but the garish looking white logo is a put off.
    Wow this is the first post stating that they didn't like the white apple on the black mac. Different strokes for different folks.
    The white macbook's logo (white on white) is probably less noticable as there's less contrast. There is no way to dim the logo as its lit from the lcd back light.
    I believe the white MB's enclosure is more durable and less likely to show abuse. I compared both side by side and I thought the white was better in that respect. I love the black one and how it looks but the durable finish was one of my major points that I wanted a MB for.

  • Possible to make pacman less verbose?

    Hi,
    During updates your sometimes see pacman print a whole list of signed keys that it has been updated, even those that have not changed. Would it be possible to remove this output?
    I do like package signing but I prefer not to be bothered with it at all as long as the keys seem to match. I feel it is something that should be handled behind the scenes and not confuse the user. Let's not forget that most UNIX programs only print things to the screen when something has gone wrong.
    This was just a friendly suggestion. Thank you for all the hard work

    @karol: Ah great. I will write my requests on the bugtracker in the future.
    @ngoonee: To explain this "most UNIX programs" thing I wrote. It is a fairly well known philosophy that a program should not print to stdout if everything works as it should. Look at the how rm, cp, mv, mount, ln et.c. works, they don't tell you that what you just did worked, they only print stuff when something doesn't and they do that on stderr. These are the programs I refer to when I talk about "most UNIX programs". I thought this concept was actually well known among Linux enthusiasts.
    There are good reasons behind this philosophy. Firstly printing something like writing an OK does not give you any more information compared to giving you nothing at all when you know beforehand a message not seen is a program that works. Imagine cp wrote "I copied file x to y" every time it worked and you have a script that does 50 cps in a row and all of them worked you would end up with a log with 100% useless information. Now this is not exactly true because usually programs print to stdout vs stderr and you could only redirect stderr but there are instances where you need to log non-error messages as well, probably because someone didn't care about sending errors to the correct file descriptor which is not very uncommon.
    It doesn't add anything for scripting purposes either. It is much easier to check the exit status and check that it is zero than having to grep for some particular text. Often people in general write to much data to stdout, it is convenient but what they actually are doing is writing what is essentially log/debug messages to stdout. This is not what stdout is for.
    I hope this explained it better.
    @2ManyDogs: I don't mean pacman should remove ALL output, only the key-related stuff. The comparison was made as a reminder.

  • WLST, how do I suppress unwanted stack traces and make WLST less verbose?

    Hi everyone,
    I've just started out with WLST but have ended up somewhat confused. My script works as intended but is very verbose.
    Suppose I want to log in:
    try:
         connect(user, "wrong_password", url)
    except WLSTException, err:
         print str(err)
         print "Run with option \"-h\" for help"The password is wrong so I get something like this printed out by me:
    {noformat}
    Error occured while performing connect : User: wm714, failed to be authenticated. Use dumpStack() to view the full stacktrace
    {noformat}
    But I also get a totally unwanted Java stack trace (before my message):
    {noformat}This Exception occurred at Fri May 21 15:49:01 CEST 2010.
    javax.naming.AuthenticationException [Root exception is java.lang.SecurityException: User: wm714, failed to be authenticated.]
    at weblogic.jndi.internal.ExceptionTranslator.toNamingException(ExceptionTranslator.java:42)
    at weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactoryDelegate.toNamingException(WLInitialContextFactoryDelegate.java:783)
    at weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactoryDelegate.pushSubject(WLInitialContextFactoryDelegate.java:677)
    {noformat}
    I don't want to confuse the user with all that! I found this:
    http://objectmix.com/weblogic/529822-wlst-exception-handling-unwanted-stack-trace.html
    Which discusses WLS.commandExceptionHandler.setSilent(1) I'm running on WLS 10.3.0.0 and can execute that statement but it has no effect. I didn't even know about the WLS-object and I can find no documentation on commandExceptionHandler.
    On the matter of verbosity, is there any way to get rid of stuff like:
    Location changed to domainRuntime tree. This is a read-only tree with DomainMBean as the root.
    For more help, use help(domainRuntime)I avoid using the "interactive" commands like cd and use stuff like getMBean("domainRuntime:/ServerRuntimes/" + appServer.getName()
    + "/JMSRuntime/" + appServer.getName() + ".jms/JMSServers") but I still get the clutter printed out.
    Thanks!

    Workaround:
    wlstOut = tempfile.mktemp(suffix="_wlst.txt")
    redirect(wlstOut, "false")
    ... do useful stuff
    stopRedirect()
    os.remove(wlstOut)I would have preffered to turn off the messages (yes I could try /dev/null) but this will do. A funny thing is that the stack trace I wrote about doesn't appear in the log file. Somehow "redirect" must have a nice side effect.

  • HT1222 Is there a way change settings, i.e. color of folders, in iOS 7 to make it less childlike looking?

    In what world is this update beautiful?  ugly.  some good additions are great, but the interface is far from beautiful, hard to read, annoying and with a very childlike look. Can you give us options to put it back to look like it did prior to 7 update?  PLEASE? If Windows (ugh) can do it, why can't Apple? The majority of iPhone users I've talked too have the same opinion, that this update while has good additions, looks like a 5 year olds phone now.

    You rarely will get any response from posting feedback.  Its just that is the venue if you want your suggestions or ideas to actually reach the various development teams at Apple (they do not sit around pouring through posts here obviously).
