OT: new kind of spam/scam?

hey guys. i've been getting quite a few of these emails
lately, and i
generally ignore them because we don't sell ad space on our
websites.
but they seem kind of shady to me, and i was just wondering
if anyone
else has been getting them, and if they are, in fact, just
another form
of spam or a scam. here's a typical message:
Good day,
My name is George Nelson and I am contacting you to inquire
eventual
purchase of a link on your website (my domain usually goes
here).
Could you please give us the prices for the following ad
options:
1) text link on your homepage only
2) text link on all pages
3) text box 120x60, 125x125 on homepage
4) text box 120x60, 125x125 on all pages
Thank you in advance!
George Nelson
here's another one:
Hello,
Browsing on the Internet I came upon your website (domain)
and I find it very interesting and useful.
My name is Daniel Lee and the reason I am contacting you is
my interest in
purchasing advertising spot on your site.
I will be very thankful if you tell me how much a text link
or banner 120x60
/ 125x125 on your home page or all pages will cost.
Thank you in advance!
Daniel Lee
note that they don't identify their company anywhere in the
message. and
the email address/name in the from field (which i didn't
post) doesn't
match the name at the end of the message. so, i guess it's
safe to
assume that it is spam. i'm just wondering what the point is!
there's no
links to click. no product to buy. just a fake ad quote
request. what's
the purpose?? usually spam or scam emails are trying to get
you to visit
a website, or download something. there's no call to action
in this one
at all. i just don't get it!
obviously it's not a problem or anything. i'm just curious
mainly. to
me, spamming seems to be just a huge waste of time anyway
(there can't
really be that many people who actually click on links in
spam, can
there??), but this one takes the cake!

No... gmail.

  • Download new version of SPAM , SAINT

    Hello to all,
I need the newer release of SPAM, SAINT for Netweaver 7.20.
Can anyone who have SOLMAN Setup with maintenance optimiser, download Them and give them to us.
    Best Regards.

    Hello,
Kindly refer to note [1061106 |https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1061106]
"You request exceptional approval of your download basket by customer message (as described in the FAQ of the Maintenance Optimizer in Service Market Place) while your Maintenance Optimizer in SAP Solution Manager and/or the required remote connection is not yet setup."
And as per the FAQ (http://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700000103142007)
"SAP provides a fallback scenario. If urgently required, customers can create a message at component SV-SMG-MAI-APR and SAP will release the required download basket in SAP Service Marketplace."
Then you should request SAP the approval via customer message.
I guess that send or publish the file somewhere is considered illegal.
    Cheers,
    Diego.

  • I have three chargers(the newer kind) and all three of them have major shorts in them. They have to be in a specific postition for them to charge! Why is this? Are all of them having problems?!?!

I have three chargers(the newer kind) and all three of them have major shorts in them. They have to be in a specific postition for them to charge! Why is this? Are all of them having problems?!?! This is just RIDICULOUS!!!

I have a charger for the iPhone 5 that has absolutely no problems.  I got my iPhone 5 the day they were first sold almost a year ago.  Also in my family are 2 iPads and 2 iPad mini's all with the new lightning cables and none have had problems.
If you have problems and they're legitimate Apple products, bring them back for replacement.

  • Spam scam friend requests

This has been happening all day today!
I have already blocked and reported them 5 times today! What's the deal? Make it stop Microsoft.
Mod Edit: Edited post to comply with the Skype Community Guidelines and Skype Etiquette

Me too, over the past month it is getting increasingly disruptive and I spend too much time blocking/reporting contact request spams. My co-workers use Skype and there are SO MANY REQUESTS that I am missing messages from important people, due to them disappearing below the page and/or "RECENT 19" new messages ... FIX?

  • Firefox opens new tabs to spam sites randomly?

I've looked into this, but it's not the redirect virus that sends to to a different spam site, and it doesn't happen when I refresh or open a new tab myself. Every 15 minutes to hour Firefox opens a new tab by itself sending me to a spam site(most common: Earn a living online ads and those sites that have a pop up asking if you really want to leave). I'm not sure what's causing this, and my AVG isn't detecting anything. Please help, thank you!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I don't remember if I downloaded something, but I only download from trusted sites. About a week ago is when this started happening.

Ok, I fixed this myself finally. it's a tdsskiller rootkit, so most likely it will keep you from going to sites to help you fix it. Get the rootkit killer from Kaspersky (link below), run it, problem all gone bye-bye!

  • New email login page scam advert - Beware.

On 23rd December my other half saw an advert on the new email login page for a 14 day trial of something called RVTL Anti Aging cream, all you had to pay was the postage (£2.99). This is basically a scam as the 14 day clock starts as soon as you click and there is a nasty £95 surprise taken from your credit card 14 days later unless you cancel before. The £95 is not mentioned anywhere you can see it when you place the order.
In our case with Christmas and New Year holidays the product did not even arrive until day 15 so there was no chance to cancel before the deadline. We called their service desk and was told bluntly that the 14 days had expired and they had taken the money. The bank also informed us they could not stop the transaction, although any future ones will be refused.
The company names concerned seem to be  Sheridan Labs and JEM Marketing of Cranleigh in Surrey and Equinox Beauties operating from a PO box in Linlithgow.  I did a quick search yesterday when we realised what was going on and it seems to be a well known problem. My Norton anti-virus even flags some of their RVTL web pages as unsafe.
I am very surprised and shocked that BT would allow such scammers to operate from the BT mail website and have asked BT for an explanation.

Their T&C below are from the RVTLSKIN company website about the trial offer.
Trial Offer and Continuity Plan Summary
    For UK Customer: +44 20 3014 0761 | [email protected]
To help you get started, we offer a 14-days trial of RVTL Anti Aging with the eligibility of automatic enrollment in our home delivery program. You can try RVTL Anti Aging risk free to determine for yourself, if this product is right for you. When you submit your order, you automatically agree to pay the non-refundable discounted shipping & handling cost of £6.95 for your trial for a full 30 day supply of RVTL Anti Aging.
If you find that the product is not right for you, simply call our Customer Support Center or the numbers shown on your bank statement you can also send an email to cancel your membership before the end of your 14-day trial period and you will not be charged the full price of the RVTL Anti Aging. Your 14-day trial period begins at the date of order our products are normally delivered within 3 to 5 business days from the time of ordering. If you do not receive your trial bottles within five (5) business days of placing the order, please contact our Customer Service Center or numbers shown on your bank statement our support staff is available to give you more updated information on the estimated delivery time along with the tracking info.
If you do not cancel before the end of your 14-day trial, we consider you as our valued member of home delivery program and charge the credit card on file the full price of eighty nine pound. £95.95 (£89.00 + £6.95 Shipping & Handling) will be charged on the 30th day from the order and  30days  there after your credit card on file will be billed for the fresh pair of full 30-day supply of RVTL Anti Aging until you choose to cancel the home delivery program. No further notice will be sent by the Company.
Not really a scam as they clearly state the terms and costs, but still hard to take.

  • So many spam / scam calls

    Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone else gets as many spam or scam calls as I do.  They can tally up to five times a day, with three rings while I'm doing something important.  I get them even though I am on the Do Not Call list, and while I report them, they still keep calling.
I'm considering just dropping the residential phone service in favor of my cell phone because it's gotten so bad as of late.  As a student, I hate getting these calls when I'm studying for finals especially. Hopefully Verizon will act on the part of the consumer and add some filtering software into their network, or up the blocked call # entries.  It's a shame to see that I can only add 10 out of the 100 or so numbers on my caller ID to that list.

Thanks for the response Anthony.  Luckily I was able to solve this problem very easily, but not in the way you suggested.  In fact, I already did what you did, and said that in my original post.  Donotcall.gov doesn't work well at all, even though it is the legit route to go.
Instead, I forwarded my Verizon number to my Google Voice number and the spam calls dropped overnight.  All you do is sign up for an account, get a phone number, and link it to your Verizon number.  While you have to give up your landline # for the most part, all calls have the ability to be filtered.  Optionally, if you sync your contact information with your Google account (through Mac Address Book or similar), you can set groups or individual people to be filtered.  They even have a universal spam filter.  You can see voicemails by logging into your Google account, and block spammers if they happen leave a message.  All messages are transcoded so that you can read them, perfect if you are in a meeting or class.
    Hope this helps others.

I saw this on Facebook about an hour ago.  I am highly suspicious of it, and suspect it's either stolen goods or a scam to get personal details (maybe a request for bank details to cover carriage costs for the iMac you'll never see?)
The grammar is not great, but it's not bad, I just don't see Apple doing this.  What do you think?
Not easy for me to report it to police etc, since I'm in the UK, but it's being circulated here and some people are gullible enough to click without thinking.

  • Device not recognized (NEW KIND OF PB) (Video Blaster Webcam 5)

    Hello
I have a Dell Optiplex GX0, Pentium-3 730MHz, 384 SDRam, 2 USB ports, Win XP pro SP2. All are fully operational. Newest Creative Webcam driver (2002 for xp, something like that)
My webcam 5 was ok until this morning
    the day before yesterday: ok
yesterday : ok ----------- and then I installed Active Webcam 7.6 (webcam CCTV software)?I configure, etc. It works.
    this morning: ok ---I change some configs :gain / frequence Hz / via the Creative config sofware, it's ok?----------then I use Active Webcam 7.6 : I change the frame rate configuration of this programm (5 +"apply", then 20 +"apply", then 5 +"apply" , 0 +"apply" ) It's okay agin?
In the end I decide to set?5 frames/second, AND THEN......BUG!!!!!!!!!!!Active Webcam 7.6?totally freezes so I kill the process via ctrl+alt+suppr
Even the Creative config sofware freezes when I want starting it. well, I kill it too.
I reboot, AND THEN.......crap.... I see the usb icon on the tray of the task bar?saying "DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED" ......and the device manager of the system panel does not show my webcam 5 any longer.
........well nothing very annoying, I thought, it is worth rebooting, re-install creative software/driver with new/old versions, seeing some topics on forums etc...
NOTHING, I re-intall, plug-unplug before or after (re)installation, verify USB status via the device manager (it says ok, except for the "not recognized device" http://forums.creative.com/i/smilies...miley-wink.gif and via the BIOS (already switch on).
Can you help me please?Thank you for your advice !

Mmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmm? After many many attempt of pluggin/unpluggin, I achieve to detect and keep my webcam detected. It is working a little bit...... I mean everything is ok, but when I attempt to reach the "source" option of Creative Webcam Control, this programm freezes and the webcam LED becomes switched on for an unlimited period. The only way escape it is to plug/unplug again several time. I HAVE AN ANSWERABLE QUESTION NOW?: :smileyvery-happy:--How can I reset my "source" and other options of Creative Webcam Control in order to get the original automatic producer settings ? --Moreover, I fear the register still definitely keep a trace of my old/bugging settings (that's why I get problems even though I re-install). How can I erase Creative Webcam 5 settings and Creative Webcam Control settings in the register, before properly re-installing my new drivers+programs ? Ps : should I keep the old driver, or take the xp whql driver ? (the new driver might be a source of problem ?)

It's nice that Adobe has made Camera Raw available as a filter, and It's great that you're sharing a technique - but I just want to say that I for one don't much like overly (artificially) smooth skin.  Somewhere, someone started a trend that in photos of people (women especially) smooth is considered better, and more smooth is more better.  Now we have as a result almost nothing but plastic people pictures.  But whatever the market will bear, I guess.
Anyway, nice combination of Photoshop features.  It could make a nice action.
A mechanical comment about the video:  You apparently have a key assigned to Image - Apply Image; it's not obvious how you invoked that from the video.
Also, there's an issue I can see with using Camera Raw that way...  It leaves halos near edges that Surface Blur does not.

  • New Software for Lightroom is available! - This is a pop-up and not genuine

I have just received a pop-up for Lightroom. I have done a general search and it appears this is some kind of spam/scam? I noticed that there are others who have also received this pop-up.  It does not look like a genuine Adobe upgrade. It has 'Ignore these updates' 'remind me later' and download'....I have not 'clicked on any of its links.
I am operating on OS X 10.10.1 with a safari browser and my Adobe Lightroom and 'Flash' are both up-to-date'. My lightroom and all Adobe product is operating in Adobe CC. How do I get rid of this 'thing'?
Thanks, any suggestion that works will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the answers. I will say the pop-up looked suspicious and not at all what I would have expected from Adobe. As mentioned when I went with an online 'Google' search with regards this pop-up I found that there were others who also had doubts about this 'pretty basic pop-up'. But hey, thanks to both of you for the swift response and replies...All going as normal here and I can rest-easy.

  • Is there a way to prevent roll-over ads from opening? Some sites are almost impossible to navigate because of this new nuisance.

For instance, www.roughstock.com is a country music website where you can see lyrics and chords for popular songs that contributors have sent in. From the main page you click on the "Cowpie" tab to enter the page where you can search for songs. If you do this I am quite sure you will experience one of the roll-over advertisements I am talking about. They are small ads which, if you touch any portion of their area, will TAKE OVER the screen and play until the advertisement is finished or until you are able to find a usually obscure 'close' button.
I've got 'pop-ups' disabled, but this new kind of ad is already resident on the page you wish to view so it is beating the system.
Also, I'm not spamming for that site, it's just the most recent site where I've experienced this problem.

It's going to get worse with crap like that as more web sites adopt HTML5 and HTML5 compatible browsers are released. There's all sorts of new tags in HTML5 that will probably be misused for displays like that.
