OT: Online photo printing services (well it is Friday)

Has anyone here used Snapfish or Walgreens for online photo
printing (where
u get the prints mailed or u pick them up at walgreens)?
How do you rate their service and print quality (provided
original image is
acceptable)?
any other services out there worth looking into?
or do you just print at home. If so, what printer?
Have a nice weekend
BW

I want to stay away from having them mailed, want the
convience of being
able to get prints fairly quickly (hence the photo printer
idea). I;ve read
that Walgreens can have them developed fairly quickly once
you have uploaded
and ordered.
Thanks

  • Photo printing services and the ProPhotoRGB profile?

I recently tried to have some images printed by Adorama here in NYC and they came back washed out and brownish. I eventually deduced that the issue was that the photos had an embedded ProphotoRGB color profile and that Adorama couldn't handle it or convert it to something that would work.
Does anyone have any suggestions for online printing services that can manage this color space and give me really nice prints?
I've just uploaded the same files to Mpix to see how they manage - anyone have any experience with Mpix? How about Nations Photo Lab?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Also - what is the best workflow for converting ProPhotoRGB color space to another color space? I tried converting it to Adobe RGB and it looks crap.
    Thanks

Both Mpix and WHCC, among others, support a fully color-managed workflow
that allow you to embed a standard RGB working space profile like ProPhoto.
Exactly how did you perform a conversion to Adobe RGB, and how did you view
the image after performing the conversion?

  • Which photo printing service to use?

I am relatively new in Apple over from Windows and want to start installing photos from Canon camera using a card reader.I like to do a light editing /correcting/ before I send the photos to a printing service.I have not done this before, therefore I need some advise as which service would be the best to use?Can I send the photos through the Internet and get them back in the regular US Mail printed?I would probably want nothing larger than 6x4 prints.
    Thanks for all advise

That is totally a personal choice - I sometimes use CostCo - The Apple printing service is the easiest to use and has good quality
I've pretty much stopped doing prints and do iPhoto books instead

  • Online Photo Printing Format  PSE4  XP

Since jpeg and some other formats are "lossy" and thus lose some quality each time they are opened, edited and closed again I convert all original images to .tif before editing and I also archive them as .tif. (Opening and closing jpeg without editing does not degrade the quality)
However some online photo labs (Walgreen) require only jpeg or bmp formats (which are much smaller file size and faster to upload/download than tif). If I convert the tif to jpeg, bmp, etc and have the photos printed have I lost any quality in the process when I reformat my archived images back to tif?
    Jack

Th eloss of quality occurs when you save to JPEG, as that's when the compression occurs. So, if you camera delivers JPEGs, you shoul dopen those, work on them and save as TIFF or PSD. Then, create a temporary JPEG as and when you need one. [If you have PSE 3/4 on Win, Organizer's File/Export is ideal for this.]

  • Elements 7... printing via online photo service

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but I decided to start here.
I have a Core 2 duo processor (2.67Mgz), a nVidia 7950GT video card, Vista home premium 32 bit (fully updated), and about 3.3 gig of  useable ram.  I have a Samsumg SyncMaster 2693HM monitor and an HP Photosmart 7180 multifunction printer.   I use a Nikon D90 in sRGB mode.
My issue is that when I upload pictures to a local regional pharmacy's third party photo printing service, they come out darker,  with less vivid colors than when I print them on my printer.
When I bought Photoshop/Premiere Elements 7 last summer I decided to callibrate my monitor.  I used the software that came with the monitor:  Natural Color Pro-Color management system.  It was just a manaual system, leading through several screens to adjust brightness, contrast etc.  It's done by sight, so I assume the results are far from optimal.  Ultimately, I want to get something like Syder Pro, but for now I would like some input.
When I start the Photoshop Elements editor I get this error message:  The monitor profile "Samsung-Natural Color Pro 1.0 appears to be defective.  Please retiurn your monitor callibration software.  There are two dialog boxes underneath.........."ignore profile" or "use anyway."  I'm not sure which choice I choose to go past.
I'm not sure if any of this information directly relates to printing pictures.  I've not tried submit the pictures to another online photo finisher like Costco.  I live in a small town and don't get over to Costco that often.
Based on the information I've provided, does anyone have any idea why the pictures would be dark and less vivid?  They look good on screen.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Apple Print Services - Do not use from UK!! Better services elsewhere!

For all of you thinking of using Apple Print Services, think again! I wish I had read all the other posts on this before I ordered 5 prints online 1 month ago!
My first order was despatched but never received despite it being sent to my Central London work address - where I receive packages from all over the world on a daily basis.
After waiting over 10 days I informed Apple Print Services after spending 15 mins trying to find their email/contact details. They asked me to check my address details which I confirmed were correct. They duplicated the order and told me it was despatched.
Over 10 days later, still nothing despatched. I contacted Apple Print Services again. I was told that should check my address again, which I did and confirmed. I was told I couldn't have the order despatched again after 2 failed attempts and that I would get my money refunded (which I'm pleased about!)
Went onto Photobox on Friday night at 10pm and ordered the same 5 prints that I tried to order through Apple. Got into work this morning and all 5 prints are on my desk waiting for me.
Shame I went through the hassle for a month and got nothing out of it - just a warning for those who may be thinking of using Apple Print Services! Use http://www.photobox.co.uk/ instead!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I love Photobox too, is there any way or are there any plans to integrate Photobox into iPhoto?
I'm nearly a 'switcher'... we use macs at work and I love them... there is just one thing stopping me and that is Picasa on PCs. I can upload my photos to virtually any online photo printer.

  • Apple Photo Printing Disappointment

Recently received two orders from Apple's photo printing service, and we had to bin them both due to inaccurate exposure settings.  The prints and enlargements were very dark.  We calibrate our monitors and have some experience using professional printing services, so the problem was not on our end.
Because it took several weeks for the prints and enlargement to arrive at our APO address, we are beyond the returns period, and there is no email support.
This lack of a contact email address for photo printing services is inconvenient, at best.  Who do we contact for our money back?  Doesn't make sense to bother AppleCare for a $15 incident.

AppleCare wouldn't be able to help with this anyway. You'll probably need to contact the Apple Store and discuss the problem with them. They sometimes have a Live Chat available. Look to the upper-right of this page:
    http://store.apple.com/us/help/print_products
    Good luck.

  • Photos sent to Online printing service darker than on calibrated monitor

ok, I know that prints are typically darker than what is shown on the screen(with loss of detail in the shadows that was visible on the screen.) I calibrated my monitor using both the eyeone display 2 puck and coloreyes software using gama 2.2, D65, Luminance 120. (which calibrated closely to using the eyeone software. I am using a 2008 macbookpro laptop. I like the colors on the screen and I exported the files using sRGB but also checked the soft proof and both the soft proof and exported photos (in preview) looked fine.
Here are my questions. I used black point compensation, is this correct?
Also, knowing that the photos are printing darker what is the best way to compensate? Should I use the gamma adjustment on the export or should I perform an adjustment on the photo in aperture? (If in aperture which adjustment?)

Can you print them yourself? How do they look?
IME, Black Point Compensation should be used (I forget why, but it is recommended).
If prints you make look right, I would bring it up with the on-line printing service.

  • Online printing services and that built into Aperture

    Hi,
I regularly have pictures printed by a well known high street photo store here in the UK but just recently I've been disappointed with some of the results.
They're coming back too dark and with a yellow cast even though the original files look fine when viewed on several different modern monitors, some calibrated, some not. I even run my monitor at minimum brightness when preparing them to try to simulate how dark they will look when printed using this service. I also add much more exposure to some pictures in Aperture to the point where they start to look washed out and even then they come back a bit dark.
I'm therefore looking to find an alternative service. Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable online printing service that produces results close to the electronic versions viewed on their monitor?
Has anyone tried the built in "Order Prints" option in Aperture? How did it go?
I briefly tried to use this option last night but for some reason it didn't recognise my Apple ID which I thought was the same as I use to log into these forums ie "d60Dave" in my case. Am I mistaken?
    Regards,
    Dave.

I second that about photobox. I've used them for 2 years or so - never had to send anything back. I've been pleased with the results for prints, posters and small booklets. online service only

  • Low Resolution when uploading to online printing service

When I upload photos from iPhoto to an online printing service (Walmart, Costco, Shutterfly) photos show up as low resolution. When I take the picture I use the higest resolution. Are there any suggestions on how to rectify this situation? I have uploaded and printed before with no problem. Do I have to use the memory stick directly to the site or change settings?
My camera is a Sony DSC-W55.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How are you going about uploading?
Are you digging the files out of the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library Folder? If so, you're using the thumbnails that iPhoto uses for display purposes.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I suggest you use the File -> Export option and export the pics to the desktop. There iPhoto will make a copy. Upload that, and when the upload is finished you can trash the copy on the desktop - your original is safe in iPhoto.
    Regards

  • Export for online printing service question...

Hi all...I am new to all this exporting business so please bear with me. In the past if i wanted prints made i just burnt them to a disk and took the disk to a local photo lab to have printed. So the question is when using an online printing service such as Mpix, would i just export versions as original sized jpegs and send them to the printing service and that's it or do i also have to mess with the dpi setting? I noticed the default dpi setting is 72 for all the export presets. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...Dave

    hello, dave
quote: "when using an online printing service such as Mpix, would i just export versions as original sized jpegs and send them to the printing service and that's it or do i also have to mess with the dpi setting?"
when someone else is doing your printing always ask them how they want your Versions delivered first prior to burning the DVD, for example, 16bit TIFF, 8bit TIFF, colorsync (color mangement), dpi...there is an excellent tutorial/information on this in Aperture's help menu "Photography Fundamentals"
what i do is edit the photograph by softproofing to the printer used. in Aperture select the Proofing Profile & then Onscreen Proofing

  • Online digital photo printing for site other than apple - how get photos easily onto site for uploading

Want to use an online digital photo printing site (eg Kodak/Photobox) in conjunction with selection of photos in iphoto.  How do I get the photos from iphoto onto the "other"site?  Drage and Drop does not work.  Obviously not made easy to use a site other than Apple, but the price is better

  • Photos sent to Kodak iPhoto print services CROPPED on top and bottom

What is the easiest way to avoid cropping of top and bottom of photos I send to Kodak print service? It is a 1019x2000 size jpeg photo, 320kb

This is a long and skinny photo. You may need to actually put blank space in to get them to keep the entire length of the long side, i.e., If you are printing a 4 x 6, your picture will be 6" on the long side and 3.06" on the short side. If you add .47" of blank space at the top and bottom, you will fill out the entire 4 x 6 inch photo with your 2000 pixel dimension on the long side.
(.47" is an extra 157 pixels top and bottom.)

  • I have created a family recipe book in iBooks - can I print it using iPhoto's print service?

I have created a family recipe book in iBooks - can I print it using iPhoto's print service? I don't want to print it on our home printer - I want to print multiple copies for family members through the Apple iPhoto book printing service.  Can anyone help me please?

There is no Apple print service for iBooks, and iPhoto can also only print photo books created in iPhoto.
Print your iBook to pdf. Then you have several option:
Save the pdf to a thumbsdrive/stick  and take it to the nearest print shop close to your home.
Search online for "self publishing" services available in your country.
Recreate your book as an iPhoto Book. This will be a lot of work, since iPhoto's templates are more suitable for Picture books than books with lots of formatted text. To speed things up, you could use "Preview" to export the pages of your book as jpegs (high quality, at least 300 dpi) and add themas full-page photos to a new PhotoBook. This can be sent to apple for printing.
But the first two options would be much less trouble and probably be less expensive.
