OT - Ratio of Thunderbird users out there?

What do you suspect is the ratio of Thunderbird (email
client) users out
there? If I need to narrow it down, I'll say North America.
Rough guesstimate is fine..

7%. I have 161 messages in my inbox dating back to 2 Oct
2006. Of the
161, 11 show "User-Agent: Thunderbird ..." in the headers.
(10 of
those were 1.5.0.7.) Of the remaining 150, 106 have an
X-Mailer
header, which breaks out like this:
7.0 for Windows sub 123 1
8.0 for Windows sub 6036 2
9.0 for Windows sub 5039 3

  • Any 1st Gen iPod users out there? M8541

All this talk about shiny new iPods has got me all nostalgic over my lovely old 1st gen scroll wheel model (M8541). Alas the hard disk died on that a year ago and it's been gathering dust ever since.
I've been Googling trying to find others in the same predicament, and hopefully some details on how to obtain a new/refurbed hard disk and bring the old timer back to life. Alas, I've not got very far as yet, which either means my searching skills aren't up to much, or it's just way too difficult so no-one's succeeded.
What I'd really like is to find some kind of flash memory with the same ATA-5 interface used by the original disk, so I can have something a bit more durable in there. I'm sure this must be possible and am hoping there might be someone out there who's tried the same or knows enough to convince me I'm wasting my time.
I've found what looks like a viable replacement disk here :
    http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=14710
Price is good too, though the part number is MK5002MAL-R where my original doesn't have the -R on the end, so not sure it's a drop-in replacement.
    Help, anyone?
Firebook 1.67Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1st gen iPod and Nano

I have this model too. Is yours a 5 or 10 GB? Also, I you using it on Win or Mac? Mine is Mac but want to use it on Win.....is it possible to reformat it to work? I;ll see if my search skills can help ya find a new HD for yours.

  • Is there a Netscape user out there?

Ever since I hooked up my new iMac in May, I have had problems with Netscape 7.2 quitting on me. Should I call Apple or does anyone out there know something I don't?
    Thanks,
    Lindy

Hi Lindy: I don't use Netscape, but from the little research I've done, I believe that Netscape 7.2 isn't a "Universal application". This could cause some grief and aggravation. I believe it was released in 2004/5, quite old in the browser world. There is a version 9 available now, as well as numerous other browsers for Mac.

  • Are there any Blender 3D users out there.... Node editor glitch

I work on a MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa 2.2) with OS X 10.4.11 and have noticed that the "previews" in the node editor have weird lines and visual glitches. See http://entplex.org/node_preview.png and http://entplex.org/node_preview2.png. Note the static in the viewer and comp nodes. This occurs with both 2.44 and 2.45. This occurs with ANY node setup I try and even after reseting user defaults in blender. I have even gone as far as trying to run blender from a clean install of os x on an external hard drive. Has anyone else noticed this or is there something wrong with my system? Can anyone confirm or deny this?

*looks like a graphics card issue.*
    *try looking here: http://www.blendernation.com/2008/02/22/blender-problems-on-leopard-solved/*
*Also, that stretching comes from your (output) format ... usually.*
*I'd try moving your output to ntsc (720x486) and deselecting fields (if those are selected)*

  • Any RH 9 HTML Link to Word users out there?

Sorry to throw another one other here, but I'm currently testing a trial version of RH9 and I'm struggling with the new linking enhancements.
    Here's the "what's new in RH9" lingo:
While importing or linking a document, you can modify the character and paragraph styles defined in the document. In the case of linked documents, style properties modified from within Microsoft Word or FrameMaker and modified from within RoboHelp can now co-exist. In other words, you can modify the style properties that you want to override in RoboHelp and allow other style properties to be modified in Microsoft Word or FrameMaker.
RoboHelp 9 maintains two styles sheets to manage the styles of a linked document. A [topic].css file stores the styles defined in the source document. The global CSS file, by default named RHStyleMapping.css, stores the details of modifications and mapped RoboHelp styles.
RoboHelp stores each modified style with the style name WD_[original_style_name] (in the case of Microsoft Word) or FM_[original_style_name] (in the case of FrameMaker) in RHStyleMapping.css.
Note: RoboHelp hides the [topic].css files from the workspace to ensure that source styles are preserved in this file.
Can anyone provide a few steps so I could test this out? Or else explain the benefit of this if all of my styles and formatting will be done in Word?
    I appreciate it!

    Hello,
This is a tricky situation, I would say, Peter has referred to a very good post explaining the process, nicely.
If you would like to include your topics from RHx5 HTML to RH9 HTML, I would advise you to got to your RH9 HTML project--
Select File> Import> HTML/XHTML File and Select All the ".HTM" topic files from you source RoboHelp Project. You would regain all the Topics in your Project Files list
Similarly you can either import the TOC, Index, Glossary files, individually or use RoboHelp's Auto-Generate wizard to recreate them afresh.
This is a workaround, and there is a possibility that some of your objects might not migrate as expected, as there has been a lot of change in the architecture/design of project elements from version 5 to 9.Hence, a sequential Upgarde in project is always recommended.
    Thanks,

  • Any former Avid users out there....

I am helping a another company gather footage from our library. However, they use Avid (PC version) and we run all Final Cut. Two days ago I gave them a hard drive with all the digitized footage as Quicktime movies using either an HDV codec (HDV 720p30 shot from a JVC GY-HD100) or DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec.
The producer and editor have both told me that they cannot open some of the files and are having problems bringing other files into Avid. So what is the native file format/codec for Avid? Should I give them avi files?
While I have not worked with Avid directly I assumed it was similar to FCP (or maybe FCP is similar to Avid depending on which side of the fence you're on). I figured you could ingest just about anything and while you may have to render it, it should fit on the same timeline.
As a small insight, I talked to the producer yesterday who said that some of the footage was in an odd size. He said it was bigger than the usual 720 by something (these are the producers words paraphrased). I told him it was high definition. He said well let me pass you over to the editor whose cutting the project. The editor gets on the phone and asks, "As part of your normal workflow do you guys normally mix SD and HD in the same project?" Apparently he'd never heard of doing such a thing.
I wasn't sure if this guy had just crawled out from under a rock and realized that much of the Western world was now getting more involved with HD...maybe he just watched the Super Bowl in High Definition. I don't know, but I told him that we do it all the time - upres SD to HD or downconverting HD to SD is a pretty common part of our workflow.
So I am trying to figure out how can I give the footage to them so they can easily ingest it (avi, OMF, Quicktime with a certain codec, etc). I am not getting paid to do their laundry so I am trying to make it as simple as possible to get this footage to them. Any ideas?

You might have an incompatibly formatted drive. Some of your files are accessible in that file structure, others are not. Seen it happen. No clue.
Or, of course, you could send them a tape or two, then let them recapture.
    <
This is the best possible solution unless you are prepared to work on the least common denominator which is likely to be an extreme choice: the lossless and hugely prolific Animation codec. (There must be other inter-platform codecs, I've never used Avid, so I dunno)
You can get additional help by posting a similar question on an Avid forum. Try creativecow.net and try not to take the elitists personally over there. They think anything that isn't purple is a threat unto their livelihoods and are likely to be rather, umm, snippy. Not like us at all.
Suggest you couch it like this: "I had to give up my favorite and ultracool Avid to go to work at a shop that is all, get this, Final Cut. I used to be able to exchange my QT files with my old Avid Macintosh chums easily but some of my old Avid chums have been forced to switch from their Macs to PC versions (can you IMAGINE?) and they need media from me. I use these formats on FCP (list here). What's the no-brainer pathway for us to exchange media freely and openly since we're all brothers and sisters working together on the same creative team and want to be able to work together without any finger-pointing since none of our editing platform decisions were our own."

  • Proportion of IE6 vs IE7 (vs FF?) users out there...

What do you guys figure is the proportion of IE6 vs IE7 (vs
    FF?) users in
    North America?
(I know it would be pure speculation either way, but share it
    anyway.)
For one thing... do you think IE7 users outnumber IE6 users
    in most
    metropolitain areas?

    According to an article at
    http://www.scmagazine.com.au/news/46941,market-share-increases-for-firefox-opera-and-safar i.aspx
Firefox's market share is currently about 14%, compared to
    79% for
Internet Explorer. That seems relatively consistent with
    similar
articles I've read over the last few months. So I'd guess
    those figures
more or less represent mainstream America, though Firefox is
    allegedly
becoming even more popular with small to medium businesses,
    representing
about 37% of users according to
    http://www.bizreport.com/2007/03/firefox_edges_up_against_ie_in_smallmedium_businesses.htm l
There's more good news: Firefox and Safari (and perhaps
    Opera, too) are
continuing to gain ground among "mainstream" users.
On another note, I wasn't aware that "tech-heads" hate all
    things
Microsoft. About the only person I know who hates all things
    Microsoft
(including Bill Gates) is myself. However, I have noticed a
    change in
tone on both political and high-tech forums over the past few
    years and
especially since Microsoft released IE7, Zune and Vista.
    Microsoft
bashing has increased dramatically, and that can only help
    Firefox gain
    still more "market share."
Don't forget to apply for a Firefox referral button from
    Google. It's a
cool way to earn a few extra dollars. :)

  • Picasa users out there? Can't upload to Picasa web albums - time out error

    Hi All,
After posting numerous times on the google picasa forums, I am hoping someone can help me here. Not sure if this is the correct discussion area.
I have been having this issue for a few weeks now and it's driving me mad. Hope someone can help.
Everything used to work fine, but now whenever I try to upload photos I just get a message saying "Error request failed. Upload failed". Looking into the log file:
    Modified request headers:
    Added header: Content-Type: multipart/form-data; boundary=---------------------------54BEB7A34478
    Added header: Content-Length: 66700
    Added header: Accept-Encoding: gzip

[216789883] Too many retries (or retry not allowed), setting status failed
    [216789884] Upload failed - err: (-7)
    Doesn't say much to me.
I am running Picasa v3.05 for Mac (10.5.7). Have tried various settings in my Firewall including switching it of all together, specifically adding Picasa under System Preferences > Security > 'Firewall' tab, rebooting my machine, banging head against brick wall etc....
Emailing my photos to Picasa works fine.
    Any suggestions would be good.
I have searched the net and tried all suggestions to those people who have had any upload issues previoulsy, but to no avail.
Something to do with proxies maybe?
Not sure if it's a Picasa, Mac, Firefox, Internet or firewall setting, so if you have any ideas, I would be very grateful to receive them!
Any experts who can help me? Thanks!
    OOB

Okay, just coming back to close this issue. I reset my Netgear modem to factory settings, set up my connections from scratch and hey presto, Picasa decided to work again. Not sure why it stopped working as I never fiddle with my modem settings (which is secured btw!). And that's after 3 weeks of searching the net and trying everything on my mac!
Hope that helps anyone else with similar problems in future!

  • After Effects users out there using Avid QT codecs...

    Hi.
I am just wondering, especially to all those Motion Graphic Designers and alike who are using
    b After Effects
    and
b rendering with clips from Avids with a Avid QuickTime codec or Meridien Compressed codec...
Do you have a problem or an error message popping out just before you hit the 'render' button in the Render Queue? If the audio is checked??
It is not totally disaterous but just an annoying error message, I have to turn off rendering with audio to avoid the error message.
    Thanks and cheers

  • Any UK/European users out there?

Does anyone have any insight into the practicalities of iPad use between countries? In my case, I live in UK (and can buy an iPad here) ... but I also spend time in Italy, where I would like to use it to access the Internet and e-mail. How do I do that?
I'm trying to avoid paying the roaming charges, by having two accounts and two sim cards , so that , if possible I am charged the respective rates for whichever country I am in. Anyone know if this is feasible?

Brought my IPad 3G which was purchased in the USA to the UK and went to the Apple Store in Cambridge for help on changing from AT&T to a UK sim card provider. Their genius offered no help. Went to the O2 store and they had a mini sim card and account for the IPad however when the sim card was inserted it would not bring up the account set up portal View Account so there was no way to set up the account on my IPad. Fortunately the manager of the store had a IPad 3G which he purchased in the UK and he was able to set up my O2 sim card account on his IPad and then move it to my IPad. This round about worked and I was able to use 3G which is very spotty in the UK during my visit. However, there was NO View Account setting to cancel the the account and I had to go back to the store and have the same manager put the sim card into his IPad to cancel the account prior to leaving. This experience would negate that you can easily travel and use mini sim cards from other countries in your IPad. Is this a glitch with Apple software that does not allow you to open multiple sim card accounts? Regardless, it needs to be addressed and corrected by Apple as many people like myself purchased the 3G model believing the marketing that they could easily use it with multiple sim card accounts while traveling abroad. I appreciate any comments...especially from Apple.

  • Question for the G5 Users Out There

    Hello All,
This is rather a simple question. I am pondering the possibility of setting up a G5 system for simple editing. Nothing huge and taxing. I promise this is not a question about how to work with Raw 4k files or uncompressed HD files. I'm just the easy stuff, so as I could keep the stronger systems for the bigger work.
I have only had a short time of experience doing edits on a G5. The studio I work at had a G5 dual 2.5ghz and was running the Production Suite, FCP 4.5. The very short amount of time I used it, I was learning FCP, and did very simple DV edits. So I never gave it a good work out. We promptly uprgraded to Studio 1 and a Xeon Machine. So like I said, my experience is limited in the G5 world.
Here is my question. I know that many of you are still using G5's as very active parts of your work. So I am asking what your setups are and what versions of Final Cut are you running? What limitations do you experience, or for that matter, what limitations do you not experience that Apple or others say you should?
I am very much a fan of using what you need and I know that the G5 systems are still very capable of doing a great deal of work and doing it well. So, if anyone feels like chiming in, I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.

I still use my Dual 2.0Ghz G5...and for the semi-big stuff...DVCPRO HD. I have a MacPro 3.0 Octo with a Kona 3 at my office...running FCP 6.0.4. And then at home I have the G5 ALSO running FCP 6.0.4, and sporting a Kona LH. I do uncompressed SD work, DVCPRO HD work, Pro Res editing (footage captured on the MacPro). Still a very good viable system. The biggest difference is render times and encoding with compressor. That is where I REALLY feel it. But day to day editing...no issues. And I swap projects back and forth all the time. Both machines running leopard too.

  • Cineform users out there?

    Hi all,
I'm sorry for this "repeated" topic but I can't find a clear answer.
After trying several "Free" conversion methods, I decided to try Cineforms HD
All I want to do is get the MAX quality going from HD to  DVD
    I have a HDV 23.976 timeline.
I want to Downres to SD (for DVD)
    My workflow has been  :
    Render HD to Mpeg-dvd preset
    Import it into encore.
    I have cineform's NeoHD (trial)
I don't know where the downsize takes place.
Do I simply change the 1440 size to 720  and that's it?
I Can NOT find ANY Info ANYWHERE explaining step by step on how to down size to DVD
    Thanks guys,
    lou

The original poster wanted to know what the Cineform workflow for converting to SD from HD was so I wanted to mention that scaling was part of it.
Here is a thread that talks in detail about the scaling and the use of HDLink to scale.  It seems things may be more complex than I originally thought as discussed by Roger Averdahl at the end.
Look at post # 5 and 6 and then at the end.  If you do File-Export -Movie, downscale the output with the settings there.  If HDLink use Convert and then set the output settings to SD.

I use Bob's procedure without the Procoder.

  • Any westcoast Canada users out there?

I have a hard time setting up pop mail in mail 3.3, not matter what I do, I can only send but cannot receive email. I have talked to both my work and home isp, no luck with that. Is there anybody using Shaw or Telus can answer my question? Thanks Alex

Like I said, I'm using IMAP, so my settings won't help you if you are wanting to configure POP. They will only help you if you switch to IMAP.
It only takes a minute or two to visit Telus' customer website and switch to IMAP. Do you still want me to share my IMAP settings with you?
