OT: Recommended Mac Keyboards & Mice

I'm just curious to know what keyboards forum visitors are
using with
their Mac computers.
I have a MacBook Pro, but I don't feel really comfortable
using the
built-in keyboard. I do a lot of writing, so I bought a
separate
keyboard - a plain, rectangular, inexpensive Kensington. I
figured I'd
use it until I was ready to graduate to a wireless keyboard.
But I've
been content with my Kensington - until the cord started
going bad.
Anyway, I'm now shopping around and am a little confused. I
visited one
store and was told their best Mac keyboards were made by
Microsoft! I
saw a Logitech package that included both a wireless keyboard
and mouse
for about $65.
I went to an Apple Store and was surprised to find an
external keyboard
designed for the MacBook Pro. Of course, it's ultra portable.
It seems
surprisingly easy to type with, in spite of its small size.
One drawback
is the price - $80. Also, it's missing a few keys - primarily
the
separate group of keys normally found on the right end of a
keyboard. It
just occurred to me that I never use those keys, so I'm not
even sure
what I'd be missing.
I thought I'd wind up getting a wireless keyboard and mouse
with all
sorts of special features, but I'm not really sure what
features I need
offhand - or what are available.
Can anyone tell me what kind of keyboard and/or mouse you
use, and why
you like it?
Thanks.

I don't like the keyboard on the MBP either. I bought the
wireless one and
it was no better.
So I went with the very thin one which connects via USB, it
has the separate
group of keys you're taliking about. For me it's a huge
difference, it's
really easy to type with.

  • Mac Pro All Keyboards/Mice Unresponsive

I was wondering if someone might be able to help with an unusual problem I'm having with my early 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro (2.26hz). I have been having a recurring problem where when I turn the computer on and it boots up, my cursor (apple wireless might mouse) can be moved on the finder, but nothing on the finder will respond to mouse clicks. Similarly, my small aluminium wireless keyboard will not respond in any way.
Thinking this is some kind of wireless issue, I will usually replace the batteries in both mouse and keyboard, try resetting the pram in the mac (and pressing and holding the power button with the power disconnected etc). Sometimes this will work and I can get up and running again with wireless services, sometimes not. This morning, it remained unresponsive after several attempts - I plugged in a wired mac keyboard and mouse, and the computer would not even respond to these, even though it would boot up into the finder. After another half dozen attempts at hard shut downs and letting the computer go through its lengthy re-start process, the wired keyboard and mouse were eventually recognized, at which point I could unplug them and turn on my wireless mouse and keyboard, and I'm up and running again.
Can anyone point me to where the issue could lie? Where a solution could be pursued? Any particular preferences etc that could be corrupted? It's a frustrating problem that is making me hesitant to shut the computer down at any stage in the event of not being able to operate it with either wireless or wired keyboards/mice.
    Thanks - Steve

  • Reliable Mac Keyboard gone AWOL

My reliable Mac USB keyboard has worked great for a long time. My G5 and a PC sit side by side on the floor, and the two monitors sit side by side on the desk. The two keyboards and two mice are used interchangeably all day, resulting in wires continually getting crossed. The keyboard is plugged into the monitor (has been for "a long time"). Yesterday, the Mac keyboard started substituting different letters/numbers for different keystrokes: i.e. the period (.) became "22". The function keys stopped working (i.e. no volume control). The computer responded normally to mouse commands. I shut down the system, put the keyboard in another working port and rebooted. Same thing happened. ---- On another note, also for the first time yesterday a few drops of water (literally) (not Coke) were spilled on the keyboard. But it worked fine after that for a while. I've been combing the forums to see if there is a way to reprogram the whole keyboard, or to reshock it, but have not been able to ascertain how. Thank you for your help.

    Welcome To  Discussions Christy!
No guarantees, but if it was just water that was spilled, disconnect the keyboard, and let it dry for a few days.

  • Remap CMD on Mac keyboard to CTRL on Windows PC?

I have a slew of Macs – unfortunately one of my clients is a PC manufacturer and I tend to bring that PC with me on site. However, I want to use an external Mac keyboard and remap its CMD key to the windows CTRL key.
I've tried Autohotkeys and others, but the CMD key seems to be invisible to the system. Any recommendations?

The few systems I've tried, see the Command Key as a "Windows" Key.  Of course, I'm using Mac hardware on a Mac, not a Mac Keyboard on a PC hardware (I don't happen to have that stuff cluttering my desk).

  • By default, on a mac keyboard F3 lets you see all the open apps and the such. However, I changed it so that I use those keys for keyboard shortcuts; But i'd like the normal F3 key to still work without me having to press FN.

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

  • Mac Keyboard Functions Don't Work

I have just discovered that the Mac keyboard has a very useful feature: press and hold a key and all the options for that character show in a little pop-up window, i.e., accents, tilde's, etc. This works in all my other programs (Word, Excel, Pages, Mail, etc.), but not in Adobe's Illustrator or InDesign. I do a project every summer that has lots of foreign names and words, and I am constantly having to ferret out these unusual characters, so having them all available right on the keyboard would be a huge time saver for me, so I was devastated to learn that Adobe's programs don't support them (when I press and hold a keyboard key in InDesign, it just repeats the character over and over as long as I hold the key down, which is the way the keyboard worked several Apple systems ago). Is there a preference or something somewhere that I am missing?

While InDesign and Illustrator don't have access to the Apple feature to show special characters, you have an even better feature in InDesign and Illustrator—the Glyphs panel. It lets you view every character (glyph) in every font on your computer. You can insert a character by double clicking it. In InDesign, choose Type > Glyphs to open it up. Use the font menu at the bottom to switch fonts. Choose from the Show menu in the middle some collections of special characters for different purposes.

  • Using a Mac Keyboard on a PC?

Does anyone know if its possible to use a mac keyboard on a PC? If so, are there drivers that Windows will require in order for it to function properly, or will Windows treat it like any other keyboard?
Before you even ask why I would do this...I really like the new Apple keyboard and would like to buy one for work to use as my main keyboard there as well.
    thanks

Hey, I run an Apple keyboard on a Windows machine all the time.. I assumed you are talking about a newer keyboard as I don't have much experience beyond 3 years ago keyboards.. It works fine.. Of course some of the Apple specific keys such as Command don't have a special meaning in the Windows environment but the keyboard has Alt and Control which are commonly used..
    No drivers necessary.. Just works...

  • MAC Keyboard - Works on a PC but not my MAC

    Yup... makes no sense huh?
I bought a used MAC G4 Quicksilver, came with mouse and keyboard. I plug the keyboard in and all works fine, except the "END" key and the "NumLock" key... maybe a few other but haven't noticed yet, just these two so far. Numeric pad displays numbers when typed, letters are fine...
I plus the MAC keyboard into my PC and works fine, can toggle the NumLock light on/off and the END key brings my cursor to the end of sentences I am typing.
My PC keyboard is PS/2 so, can't see how it works on the MAC.
I have since formatted the system and reinstalled MAC OS 10.4.4 and applied the 10.4.6 update and still the same issue.
Main problem I have now is I bought a TrippLite USB KVM switch so that I can alternate between systems and of all the luck, the hotkey to switch systems back/forth is to hit the NumLock key twice fast. I can switch to the MAC then I can't switch back because the NumLock key doesn't work in MAC.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm new to MAC but find it ironic that the MAC keyboard detects and works fine on a PC and not on a MAC.
    Thanks
    Power Mac G4 933Mhz (Quicksilver 2002)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   AGP MX4 64meg Video, Superdrive, 256meg Ram

Anyone at all? Any settings or anything to be set? Nothing?

  • My iMac keeps typing a minus sign. I switched my wireless keyboard for a plug in Windows keyboard, and it keeps typing this one character. I took the batteries out of the Mac keyboard, so that is not the problem. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Thanks for your observation. I realize they are different versions, but when I use the "Software Update" menu, this is as far as it would update. Is there some way to update the iMac beyond what "Software Update" does? I've tried it several times.
    Please Note.
Upgrading OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion) is not an update. It is a paid upgrade. Just as with 10.7 (Lion) you must purchase it from the App Store with yor Apple ID and install it after backing up your current computer state for safety.

  • Cannot pair my mac keyboard to apple tv 2

I have no problem connecting any wireless devices in my home.  trying to connect or pair  my mac keyboard to apple tv, through bluetooth and it doesn't pick up any signal for the keyboard.

I have a 21.5 " Mac with 2.7 Ghz. I don't see a model name on the keyboard itself. DG733951RXNDPQYAR is stamped on the back don't know if that helps or not.

  • My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation. In OSx boot it keep Win keyboard. How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation.
Installation went well but when I boot either with OSx or Win it always keeps Windows keyboard.
How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

Hi - I have the exact same model as your MacBook and had a few questions as mine is acting up. I upgraded the ram to 8gb (2x 4GB ram) and ever since then my computer has not been running as smoothly and the start up time is horrendous. Have you encountered this problem? And if so how did you fix? What would you advise me do?
I was thinking of reverting back to the original factory 4GB then rebooting the entire computer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ctrl-alt-end on mac keyboard

Our system at work uses WIndows XP and I can now use Remote Office to get on the system from home. Previously, I had to run Parallels Desktop for windows. Now, I can run it from Safari, except to begin the login process, I must hit the combination of keys "Ctrl-Alt-END" I have looked at discussions and they say end is accessed using the command key and the left or right arrow. No luck with that.
Do I hit the control key, alt key, command key and right arrow at once? I tried that and it didn't work. Parallels for Windows has a virtual Windows keyboard, but there doesn't seem to be the same WIndows keyboard on Mac OS. Help!!

the options key on the mac keyboard should map to the windows alt key, so the key command should be control-options-end.
You should be able to enable "Remote Access" on the windows XP machine (get properties on My Computer and enable it in the "Remote" tab). Then download Microsoft's "Remote Desktop Connection" software and connect to your work PC by entering it's IP address.
