OT: .ttc to .ttf conversion
I use Font Agent Pro (FAP) which currently does not support .ttc fonts.
I've tried a couple of free online font converters (eg: http://www.fontconverter.org/) to convert .ttc fonts to .ttf or .otf, but they only convert the first instance of the font (i.e. regular), and not the entire collection (i.e. regular, italic, bold, etc). Does anyone know of a conversion tool that will easily convert an entire .ttc font (True Type Collection) to the .ttf format? I want something simple, I don't want to have to work in code or Pearl.
thanks
Be advised that the "service" offered at the URL specified violates most font licenses in either one or two ways.
(1) Many font licenses specifically prohibit conversions of any form such as from TrueType to Type 1, Type 1 to TrueType, whatever to OTF, TTC to component TTF, etc.
(2) This online converter requires uploading a file to a third party. Virtually no font licences allow such transfers of fonts to third parties unless the third party has their own license for the font(s) in question.
Also note that the online "service" pointed to also claims to support extraction of fonts from PDF files. Note that such extraction and use is not only against most font licenses, but also yields incomplete and effectively useless font files. The font data embedded in a PDF file (or for that matter in EPS or PostScript) is not the full font file. Obviously an embedded subset has the problem of missing glyphs and most fonts embedded in PDF (or EPS or PostScript) files are small subsets of the fonts' original complement of glyphs. But in addition, a significant amount of font metric information association with pair kerning, bounding boxes, etc. is not embedded and therefore is missing in any extraction.

.otf to .ttf conversion
Is there a simple tool/utility to convert an .otf (Adobe Windows) to .ttf.
I purchased an .otf font without knowing that my cad program only supports .ttf and .shxYou could use FontLab to do this, but it's a heck of a lot more expensive than the font was in the first place! (Retail price around $600 I think.)
I expect the next version of "TransType" will do this, but the current version does not. This is unfortunate, since it is much more reasonably priced (around $100 I think)
Both programs are from the same folks: http://www.fontlab.com

How can I access a specific font face contained within a TTF font file?
I want to access "Avenir Medium", which is one of 12 faces contained within the font file named "Avenir.ttf".
CSS allows me to specify the font file (src:...), the family name (fontFamily), and the weight (fontWeight).
The file, of course, is the same for every face within the TTF file, so that doesn't help.
The family is Avenir. Am I supposed to use some version of "Avenir Medium" in the fontFamily param? Nothing I've tried has worked.
The weight is Medium, but that is not an option for the CSS param fontWeight, so this does not seem to be the way to do it.
In Photoshop the font is accessed via the Family pull-down (Avenir) and the Syle pull-down (Medium).
I have not found a way to split the TTF file into separate files for each face, though that would seem to be the simplest solution.Use this converter to convert ttc to ttf

My MacBook is about a year old, and recently it became extremely slow during startup. At first it just seemed a little slow, but the past couple of days it has taken more and more time. It's now taking 5 - 10 minutes to fully come on. Once it's on, everything is fine.
I've troubleshooted in Apple Communities and tried all of the advice I've found, but nothing seems to be working. Here are the details.
My computer:
MacBook
OS 10.7.4
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Available hard disk space: 163.27 GB free (out of 249.2 GB)
What I've tried so far (in order):
1. Check startup disk - Startup disk was correctly selected
2. Use Disk Utility to Verify Hard Disk - No problems identified
3. Updated system software - no major updates (I update regularly to begin with)
4. Check System Monitor for hidden activity - Almost no activity (no other programs were running at the time); no strange users or activity
5. Check Login Items - The iTunesHelper was causing an error. I removed it and replaced it with iTunesHelper from the iTunes Package. The error was fixed, but no improvement in startup time. (Current Login items: GrowlMenu, GrowlHelperApp (Growl is up to date), iTunesHelper, Dropbox)
6. Check Library System Fonts - All necessary fonts for OS 10.7.4 are present. I haven't added or deleted fonts besides what can be installed with the OS and or with MS Office. Here the full list (long):

7. Verified and repaired disk permissions (there were several differences, they were all repaired).
I don't know what else to try. My Mac's not making any strange noises, and is otherwise running well. The only thing that I can think of is that it's been too humid in my house recently (rainy season in Japan). But the slow startup seems to be the same regardless of time of day and humidity, and if it were humidity I have no idea how to fix that. Also, none of my other Mac devices seem to be similarly affected, so I doubt that's the problem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!It turns out that my hard drive was shot. I took my MacBook to the Apple Store on Wednesday, they kept it for analysis and repair. They replaced the hard drive, and I've already got it back (Friday; less than two days in total).
Although I did check my hard disk with the disk utility, it did not identify the problem.
Some other troubleshooting advice that I overlooked was to try reinstalling my OS and to try starting up in Safe Mode. Neither would have helped in this case, but they may be useful for someone else having similar problems.
Other advice - always make sure your data is backed up and that you Apple Care coverage is up to date. -
What are the system fonts needed for Lion to run?
I work in a Prepress Department and the only way to properly work with fonts in this enviroment is to have the bare minimum fonts necessary for an OS to run correctly which is usually around 30 or less fonts. Then we use suitcase to load fonts provided by customers and we know for sure we are using the exact fonts used to build the job say in Quark or Indesign. Before moving system fonts from Lion into a disabled folder I was hoping for a list of sysytem fonts that are absolutely needed to run Lion without issues.

New fonts installed with Motion 5 and FCPX??
Anyone know if there are some new fonts imbedded into FCPX and Motion 5? Seems like I have at least 1 new font (Gaz) that does not appear in any other applications or in the Font Book app. (Gaz is what Mark Spencer uses in one of his new tutorials for Motion 5.)
If so, where are they and what other fonts are new/included? Kinda like to know those things.Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 have the following fonts built in to support the supplied Motion templates:
Banco Heavy.ttf

These fonts are stored in Final Cut Pro or Motion in the following subfolder: Contents / Frameworks / TextFramework.framework / Versions / A / Resources / Fonts. To get inside Final Cut Pro or Motion, right- or control-click the application and choose Show Package Contents from the context menu.
They also have
FCMetro34.ttf
In Contents / Resources / Fonts - which is used to display timecode. -
New fonts in Motion 5.1
In addition to the older built in fonts for FCPX/Motion, version 10.1 provides about 40 more fonts:

You can find these in Motion (show package contents) / Contents / Frameworks / Flexo.framework / Versions / A / Resources / Fonts.
This is a different location than previous versions (Flexo.framework vs. TextFramework.framework). Option-click/drag the Font folder to your desktop (to create a *copy* of the fonts folder, then add the fonts you need via Font Book. I recommend creating an "FCPX Collection" to make these easy to find in Motion.
HTHThe fonts were supplied in both apps: FCPX and Motion. If you are only ever using those specific fonts within the context of these two apps for video projects, there is no reason to go looking for them, they will appear in the Fonts menu in both applications. If you would like to use them in other apps, then copying them out of one or the other app and installing them into the system with Font Book will be necessary. That's all this is about.

Flash Player 11 constantly crashing on every Website with Flashcontent...
Hi,
I am having problems with the latest Update of Adobe Flash Player to release 11. I am on a Mac(10.6.8) running the 64bit kernel. At the moment I installed Flash Player 11, every Website with Flashcontent is crashing. This also happens in Chrome, not only Safari or Firefox. I did everything Adobe provides as possible solutions. Do an uninstall with the uninstaller, then install fresh. I had a look in both of the Internet Plugins folder to make sure everything got removed correctly. But the new install won't work.
What works is uninstalling Flash Player 11 and installing Flash Player 10.3 again. Everything works like a charm then. Well... except in Chrome of course.
Just as a last bit of information: I never had any beta or alpha versions of the player installed.
Can anyone please help me? Does anyone else encounter this problem?
Regards

Font Book - OS X Lion Default Fonts
I'm trying to find out what fonts were added to OS X in Lion (compared to Snow Leoaprd). I've compiled my own list. I think that Apple added 79 fonts in OS X Lion. Here's what they are. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

You can find these in Final Cut Pro (show package contents) / Contents / Frameworks / Flexo.framework / Versions / A / Resources / Fonts.

Can you repair your fonts?...
I know this is my fault, but I'm wondering if I can fix it. I'm a graphic designer, and I've always had problems with Helvetica and now Helvetica Nueue because I use them for designing and the OS uses a different version, so I had followed the instructions I found elsewhere to "fix" them, but now I know that I've borked my fonts because I can't read the headers of e-mails, and other things because the system font isn't working.
So, long story short, isn't there a way to re-install the system fonts or something of the kind so that I can go back to how it was. I should also say that I use Font Explorer Pro to manage my fonts.
I'm also inserting a screen capture of what some web sites look like in Safari now because I'm getting a Capital "A" in a box instead of the proper words.
Thanks in advance for your help.
StephKurt Lang wrote:
In order to use the Helvetica fonts you need for your projects (assuming they are not Apple's versions), you simply can't allow Apple's Helvetica fonts to exist in their normal location since you then cannot turn them off.
What you need to do is have Apple's fonts set aside in their own folder, not in any of the Fonts folders, so you can control them.
Not sure what article you found, but the instructions for getting Apple's fonts out of the way are in my article, Font Management in OS X. Remove these fonts from both the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, and the buried ProtectedFonts folder. Do the protected ones first so they don't automatically replace those in the System's Fonts folder.
Next, you need to get these fonts back onto the hard drive as I noted above. In a generic folder outside of any Fonts folder. For that, you can use Pacifist. Put your Snow Leopard installation DVD in the drive and use Pacifist to extract the various Helvetica fonts to your new folder.
You will need all of these to satisfy Snow Leopard's normal list of fonts:
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.ttc
HelveticaLight.ttf
HelveticaLightItalic.ttf
Once you have your folder of Apple's Helvetica fonts set aside, you're ready to continue.
To remove Font Book from the hard drive, follow these steps:
1) Open Font Book, and then its preferences. Uncheck the box for "Alert me if system fonts change". Close the preferences and shut down Font Book. Put the Font Book application in the trash and delete it.
2) Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding it until OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally.
This will reset Font Book's database and clear the cache files in your user account. All fonts in the three main Fonts folders (System, Library, your user account) will now be active, regardless of their state beforehand.
3) Close all running applications. From an administrator account, open the Terminal app and enter the following command. You can also copy/paste it from here into the Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
This removes all font cache files. Both for the system and all user font cache files. After running the command, close Terminal and immediately restart your Mac.
With Font Book completely gone, and all cache files cleared and rebuilt, things should now be displaying correctly.
Hello Kurt!
I have read both your "Font Management in OS X" article and the referenced "Undoing Font Book" (unfortunately, this article only goes as far as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and I'm not sure whether everything would be the sam in Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.)
I've followed all the instructions in your article as soon as I've got my new iMac 2.5 GHz Intel a couple of months ago, but some things are not working right with fonts: Working on a QuarkXPress Passport document previously saved, I was unable to use the HelveticaNeue.ttc font that I had used when originally working on the file as QuarkXPress told me the font was missing.
When in Font Book I tried to see what the problem with this font was, it showed conflicts with "multiple copies of this (as well with other) font" which I cannot resolve by clicking on "resolve duplicate font conflicts": it asks whether I "want to disable the selected fonts", which is not what I want. Actually, Font Book tells you that "you can use the Resolve Duplicates command to automatically deactivate the copies not in use."
If I do this, I believe I won't be able to use whichever font so deactivated, or would I?
I launched Font Book, opened its preferences and unchecked both "Alert me if system fonts change" and "Automatic font activation".
I still get alerts such as "Finder requires AppleSymbols font", "Finder requires Aquakana-Bold font", "System font HelveticaLightItalic.ttff has been restored MacOSX needs it to display text onscreen" after either moving to another location or deleting them in preparation for a complete new Font Book reset as explained on your post.
My question is, should I try removing Font Book from the hard drive and replacing it with a fresh copy and, if so should I do it the way you explain on your reply to stephmoreland?
Even though Font Book is a "weak" font manager, I would rather stick with it as I believe it performs for the kind of work I do on my computer.
Thank you so much for your help,

InDesign CS5 crashing on launch due to font auto-activator issue
I was having a problem where all the jobs I had been collecting would no longer open in InDesign CS5 without crashing on startup. Just found out today it has to do with the new feature in CS5 that reads fonts from your "Document Fonts" folder. Once I renamed the folder the files started opening up just fine again. Is there a way to disable that feature in InDesign, or has anyone else found another workaround that doesn't involve renaming the folder on every job I collect?
I'm sure it's a known issue by now, but I didn't see anything come up when I did a search.Same problem here. Whenever I want to open a packaged InDesign document which includes a Document Fonts folder containing some fonts which are identical to my system fonts (10.7.3 in my case) InDesign hangs. The best way to avoid these problems is to clean all system font folders and start managing fonts yourself. Check what fonts are needed for a certain document, avoid using fonts installed by the system. Although it is very generous from Apple, Adobe and Microsoft to give us a lot of fonts for free it is wise to manage them yourself. Check the following font locations:
~Library/Fonts
~System/Library/Fonts
~User/Library/Fonts (first make the Library visible: from within Terminal type the following command and press Return: chflags nohidden ~/Library)
Remove all fonts installed by Adobe (109 fonts) and Microsoft (154 fonts) to a differrent location. I manage them with FontExplorer 3.0 but you are ofcourse free to use any other font manager you prefer. Clear out any system font which is not needed by the system. Make sure the removed fonts can be enabled when needed. In FontExplorer you can create a set like 'Adobe CS5 Fonts' and put all Adobe fonts in there. This also counts for Apple system fonts which you remove. Create a new set in FontExplorer and call it OS Lion Fonts for example and move all fonts in there. I'd like to point out that I choose to manage fonts myself and I keep FontExplorer's capabilities to organaise fonts turned off (Preferences > Advanced > Organise font files). This way the Finder structure I use to manage my fonts (which is by foundry/designer) is maintained.
Clearing all unneeded fonts keeps the font list short and uncluttered which makes it easy to select fonts in InDesign or any other app. When you are designing things you want to make a selection of fonts you want to use in advance so keeping a lot of fonts available to the system is pointless in my opinion anyway.
Also, this process gets rid of a lot of fonts which you don't use/need like Chinese or whatever other language fonts. It shortens the font list dramatically. Setup font auto activation/deactivation so that fonts are disabled automatically after reboot or when you close a document to prevent the font list from growing out of proportions.
Below is the list of fonts which I keep installed/enabled by default in my ~System/Library/Fonts folder:
Apple Color Emoji.ttf
Apple Symbols.ttf
AppleGothic.ttf
Courier.dfont
Geneva.dfont
HelveLTMM
Helvetica LT MM
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.dfont
HelveticaNeueDeskUI.ttc
Keyboard.ttf
LastResort.ttf
LucidaGrande.ttc
MarkerFelt.ttc
Menlo.ttc
Monaco.dfont
Symbol.ttf
Times LT MM
Times.dfont
TimesLTMM
ZapfDingbats.ttf
I haven't checked Times yet but I think it can be disabled. If you think Times is causing problems and you rather want to activate it yourself when it is needed or you want to use it you can remove it from the ~System/Library/Fonts folder. Drag the font to the desktop to make a copy first. Next trash the font file. Enter your admin password end you're done. If a font is needed by the system it gets restored automatically and you get a notification like "The system font 'HelveticaNeue.dfont' had been restored. This font was removed. Mac OS X needs this font to display text onscreen."
If you don't use FontExplorer you can use Onyx to clean font caches when you are done clearing out unwanted fonts. Always reboot afterwards.
Hope this helps. -
Indesign CS5.5 - Error signature - font manager.rpln
OS : Microsoft Windows XP SP3
Indesign CS 5.5 version 7.5.2
font manager.rpln - file version 7.5.2.318, product version 7.5.2 - checksum md5 a06eb67598ab75fb0bd4520cdf37ebf7
Error signature
AppName: indesign.exe AppVer: 7.5.2.318 Mod Name: font manager.rpln

This error occurs apparently at a random time. Still, I noticed that is occurs more ofter when using 'Balance Columns' from 'Text Frame Options' and the 'Preview' box is checked.
Any suggestions to fix it?To be more clearly:
1. With Cambria Fonts installed (files: CAMBRIA.TTC, CAMBRIAB.TTF, CAMBRIAI.TTF, CAMBRIAZ.TTF all 4 version 5.96 located in windows\fonts folder) ID crashes and Office 2010 equations if is just fine.
2. Without Cambria Fonts, ID is ok, but Office 2010 equations (from Word) are blank, the design of the equation is not shown (missing font - wich is Cambria Regulat - realised that Math Cambria is included there) and soon Word 2010 crashes.
So the Cambria font is version 5.96 and those 4 files are for Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold-Italic.
There is no other file or font with prefix Cambria, in Fonts folder or available in any application.
New experiment:
1. Installed just Cambria Regular font (CAMBRIA.TTC file version 5.96). Word 2010 equations are ok but ID crashes.
Here is the Word 2010 equations problem:
Cambria Regular installed

Cambria Regular NOT installed

Whenever the dialog window comes up that requests my username and password (to empty certain things from the trash, change my start-up items, etc.), the box appears with no words or letters, but rather small square symbols (with the letter "A" in them) where the letters should be. My username appears with the same symbols, instead of dots, and when I type in my password, it does the same.
Its been this way since I installed Snow Leopard. Whazzup?Paco --
I meant you are missing the LucidaGrande that comes in your System Folder.
These are the fonts you have to have in your System folder.Library>Fonts:
AppleGothic.ttf
Geneva.dfont
HelveLTMM
Helvetica LT MM
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.ttc
Keyboard.ttf
LastResort.ttf
LucidaGrande.ttc
Menlo.ttc (the new default font for Terminal)
Monaco.dfont
Times LT MM
TimesLTMM
Did you take fonts out of there???
If you did you can reinstall them from your install disk.
