OT: U.S. Midwest flood relief project needs volunteers

Greetings everybody,
I discovered this organization recently, Hands On Disaster
Response
http://www.hodr.org). They provide
opportunities for short-term volunteer
work in disaster locations, with what appears to be very
little red tape. I
haven't been on a project yet, but got on their email list,
and they just
sent me this letter (below), which I thought some people here
might be
interested in.

The Midwestern United States have been inundated by record
breaking flooding
creating a great need for volunteer support. Hands On has
launched Project
Cedar Rapids which opened June 23 and will run for 30 days,
providing
volunteer assistance to communities affected by the flooding.
We need volunteers to come join our project! If you cannot
come and join our
team in Iowa, then please consider donating to support these
efforts and the
people of IOWA! You can make a donation that you know will be
used
effectively through the Please Give page on our website or
through PayPal.
Please also check the Volunteer Info section of our website
and photos for
updated information as it becomes available.
We will be focusing our efforts in Cedar Rapids and Palo, IA.
In Palo, a
town of 500 homes, 470 were flooded. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa's
second largest
city, an estimated 4,000 homes were inundated by the
overflowing river.
Residents are very proactive and have already started
removing the
water-logged contents of their homes, lining the streets with
debris. We
anticipate working alongside residents, helping with gutting
of homes, and
will remain open and flexible to the changing needs of the
communities.
We will update our website
http://www.hodr.org/ and our
Twitter micro-blog
http://twitter.com/HODRops
with updates and projects as they evolve.
See you in Iowa!

    VIDEO_TS (and an empty audio_ts) folders are part of a standardised DVD structure.  So, what you need a DVD-authoring tool.  FCPX offers to create a very simple DVD, one movie, two designs (black or white), no menu, done.  Older Macs came pre-installed with iLife/iDVD  … export your project as a 'Master', drag into iDVD, select any design template ...   Apple axed 'disk creation' about 7 years ago ... the AppStore is crowded with other, convenient, consumer, template based  tools. Professional structured DVDs are only optional with obsolete DVDSP (part of FC-suite) or Adobe Encore .....

  • Upgraded to Crystal Reports XI R2 - Project needs to be upgraded

    Post Author: GlennH
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    Two issues I am facing:
    1.  Whenever I open my existing project that I have added Crystal capabilities to I get a message box stating that "One or more projects in Solution "..." needs to be updated to use Crystal Reports XI Release 2.  If you choose "Yes", the update will be applied permanently.  If you choose "No", some design-time features may not work properly. Would you like to upgrade your solution?"
    For this message box I always click "Yes" - everytime I open the project.  Apparently permanent is not permanent!
    2.  After I click "Yes" above I always need to add the following two references to my web project in order to get my web solution to build without errors.  The errors state something to the effect that the version referenced in my project does not match version so-and-so.
    So, the problem is I can not open or build the project without user intervention.  It has been frustrating for me, but will be a show-stopper when we go into the automated build process.
    I am running VS 2005 with SP1 on Windows XP SP2.  All project files and the .sln file are writeable.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Glenn

    Having same problem.  Found out that the upgrade=yes option was removing some of the assemblies in the web.config file.  I now answer no every time I start VS2005.

  • TV monitor display project, need advice.

    So I will be starting a project soon for my job. It will require some content for a store lobby TV display screen. Basically I will be making some content, whether it be scrolling images, animations, or maybe a video clip playing automatically. I will have maybe all of these things to be played throughout the day in the lobby of my work for customers to be viewing. This is the first time I have taken on a project such as this and I'm not sure where to start. I need advice on what type of information I need in order to begin this such as what size to start my project as, format, etc. Thanks!

    Hi,
    You have two options:
    1. Create the Edge Animation on the Computer, and play the animation and use some screen capture software that will give you a video. This video you can play on your lobby TV  in loop.
    2. If the lobby TV is a smart tv (i.e. it has browser to navigate the webpage), then you can host the Edge animation content files on some server, and navigate to the server url, which will play the animation on the browser in the TV.

  • Starting a Wedding Project need some advice

    Hi,
    New to this forum, as I'm a recent convert from Avid to Final Cut. Not completely free from my PC projects, but ready to endeavor into my first full length production in Final Cut Express. This will be a Wedding Video of my Daughters Wedding shot back in Nov.
    For starters I'd like to say that I will be using several different formats of clips. They range from HD, SD, and old analog that I will convert to SD clips.
    I will be using Third party music, and adding effects, color correction, filters to bring balance to the film. It will most likely be under 1 hour, and have multiple menus, chapters of which I will make in iDVD. I will spend hundreds of hours on this production and hope to reduce my roadblocks by acquiring some helpful suggestions.
    I am concerned about getting the sequences and project settings correct. Since most of the aspect ratio was shot in 16.9 I will use this codec. What advice can I get based on the information thus far to get the project off to a good start.
    I've already captured 90% of all the raw footage from the wedding, over 6 hrs. The HD was imported from a Sony AVCHD showing a frame size of 1920x1080. Second Camera used was a SD Sony VX2100 720x480 and a third Sony TRV-730. The compression setting shows up "Apple Intermediate Codec"
    I am a seasoned editor in Avid Pinnacle's Studio Platform and have used it for over 15 years. I feel solid in the PC arena, but like a fish out of water in the Mac world. I am learning and reading and reviewing on line studies to learn the basics of Final Cut. But if the foundation is incorrect as you build the project you only set yourself up for disappointment.
    Thanks for any suggestions. Will provide more details as asked
    Dan
    Thanks in advance

    so, the usual suicide mission of a first-timer project ...
    no, I've read the rest of your post, you're an advanced editor ... but I like to make jokes about those wedding-videos, 'cause MY first project with FC/e was such, and I failed at a paramount degree
    1) I've worked on a few short projects to date.
    ... I've already captured 90% of all the raw footage ...
    oh, oh ...
    BEFORE 'capturing', ALL material should be converted into final Project's Format! because, FC/e does NOT convert on import ...
    I believe I have all my source video from the event, the rest is in files on my PC from folders that I have generated over the years on my daughter at play, etc. I have yet to transfer these files.
    To this issue regarding clips of daughter's childhood, I work on inspiration as the story progresses. I do journal and take notes, I have found this extremely helpful, especially in putting together multi-cam shots of the same scenes. I have my own script sheets I've made to work this issue out. Although I see the notes that you can ascribe to each clip is very extensive, and thus I've made many and can update them as I review the clips. I like this feature in FC/e.
    Give the free tool Mpeg Streamclip a try, choose Export to Quicktime/Appleintermediate as codec ...
    Where is this available?
    Choosing "Export" to Quicktime/Appleintermediate as codec. When is this done, since my clips that I've "Logged and Captured" from HD Camera are using this AIC
    When I view my clips now in the folders they are quick time movies.
    I may need to do this with the SD clips, since they don't show the Quicktime.mov.
    capture the resulting .mov, or you get an annoying 'not rendered' after each 'cut' in FC/e.
    I have started the project, naming the project, and have the captured video stored on my new G-Raid external 2TB Hard drive. I believe my file structure is correct, saving a few concerns about setting up sequences and matching them to the master clips. I've studied the manual intensely, but the learning curve is as you go.
    get familiar with FC/e's bins and be disciplined in naming each take ... it helps on such projects. or, what I like to do is a 'paper-editing' first: pencil&paper, noting my thoughts what, where, what ... trial'n-error-editing is no good cook in FC/e.
    I have done this and have learned this in Avid, although they are not called "bins" they are 'files and folders' rather.
    ... I've already captured 90% of all the raw footage ...
    ie all but the childhood files that come as the story unfolds or inspiration dictates. I don't always follow a script, most of the time when doing family events it's all heart.

  • Project -  need help rather quickly

    I am doing a 2 minute/ish long small project which will involve images flowing across the screen......with text which appears over them. Thats it taken down to basics.
    http://www.coremelt.com/products/products-for-final-cut-studio/imageflow-demo-re el.html
    is pretty much the effect i want to go for, but i am wondering if i can do those type of effects in FCP (i have about 3 weeks) without that plugin?
    If so can someone post some type of tutorials, to help a novice out.
    If not....i suppose i will need to buy the plugins in the video for £50.
    thanks

    Do you have only Final Cut Pro, or also Motion? This sort of animation can be done in either. But if you're not that familiar with the methods to set up the animations and managing all the tracks/objects involved it would certainly take a lot less time to use a canned animation tool like the one you linked to. It depends on whether you're getting paid to do this, I would imagine!

  • PSE7 ~ I'm inserting a .jpg image into a project, need to resize smaller and it ends up blurry!

    Please help!
    I am creating a birthday invitation for my daughter using PSE7.  I found a few .jpeg images on the web that I want to use.  The images should be okay size-wise (a 66kb image) when I try to insert this image onto the invitation (size of the invite is 5x7) - image takes up maybe 1/6th of overall invitation.  When I insert this image into the project, it is HUGE.  I need to resize it to reduce, but when I do for some reason it becomes very blurry.  I can't figure this out!  At the very least a 66kb image should be able to be inserted onto this 5x7 invitation as a 1" square and be crisp at that size??  Ugghh!
    I hope I am being clear in my request...the image in question is pictured below.  When this image is inserted into my PSE project, it would be about 2" high on a 5"x7" invitation...
    Also, when I save the whole invitation as a jpg for printing, it's only 120kb file size...shouldn't it be much larger?  Am I missing a global setting somewhere that's messing everything up??  Many thanks in advance to anybody offering suggestions...

    You're thinking in the wrong terms. You need to be focusing more on ppi (pixels per inch) rather than the file size in KB. Start by  making sure your main image is at 300 ppi (you may have to start over from scratch). If the graphics are now way too small when you bring them in, remove them and try a lower resolution, but you don't want to go below about 220 usually (it depends on your printer how low you can go and get away with it).
    Go to Image>Resize>Image size to check your invite's ppi, but my guess is that you started at something like 72 ppi. If you did, I'd start over, unless you have enough pixels that when you change the ppi to 300 (with Resample Image turned OFF) it's still large enough.

  • Exporting Issue: One large frame sized project, needs to be split and exported in 3 separate files

    Hello Awesome people, help me out here Please!
    I have a 4480(W) 1260 (H) frame sized project which needs to be exported in 3 separate files, due to the large screen size at the venue.
    how to split one project into 3 so that I can get 2 x 1920 (W) and 1 x 640 (W), and height for all three would be 1260 (H)??

    Dear Evans,
    You might need to check the print preferences settings on the system. This is available from Administration -> System Initialization -> Print Preferences.
    Check this out for the documents that get printed as images and get stored in the Bitmaps folder. Check under the 'general' tab whether the check box for printing documents as images is ticked. If yes, untick this. Then check the settings under the 'Per Document' tab - you will need to change the settings per each document.
    I hope this helps.

    Im a beginner to java itself and have taken this up as a project.
    I would like to know what needs to be learnt(Im familiar with OO concept and have done a bit on java for now, but not this extent.)
    Primarily I will be dealing with mulit-threading and so on.
    Could you please point me out to some details...
    If this info is not sufficient ,I'll provide more.

  • Massive iDVD project-Need help breaking it up

    I have been working on a comprehensive DVD of all of my family photos dating back to 1890. I have chapters split up by decades and then submenus within divided up by years. It is almost 2000 photos (no iMovies). Each year is its own slideshow with music attached (slideshow created within iDVD). The monster is 16gigs and over 800 minutes long (according to the project info), however, if you just add up each slideshow it only adds up to about 4 hours of material. I have a red "X" in the top box of my map view that says "total menu duration exceeds 15 minutes", however when I duplicate the project and start deleting chapters it never goes away.
    Is there away to easily split this project up into 2 or 3 DVD's?
    Or perhaps make the menus smaller?
    No one slide show is more than 13 minutes long.
    I am open to suggestions on how to tame this bohemoth.
    Thanks!

    As much as you would like it to be all on one DVD, clearly you need to break it up, unless you really want to burn it to a double layer DVD, which can accomodate 4 hours. This includes all the menus.
    I would break it up into two or three DVDs, by doing just what you tried; duplicate the DVD project and then delete the parts you don't want in the duplicates,so that you end up with 2 or 3 DVDs of 2hrs or 1 1/2hrs each. Since you already have them organized into years, it should be simple enough to do.

  • A Menu Applet Project (need help)

    The Dinner Menu Applet
    I would need help with those codes ...
    I have to write a Java applet that allows the user to make certain choices from a number of options and allows the user to pick three dinner menu items from a choice of three different groups, choosing only one item from each group. The total will change as each selection is made.
    Please send help at [email protected] (see the codes of the project at the end of that file... Have a look and help me!
    INSTRUCTIONS
    Design the menu program to include three soups, three
    entrees, and three desserts. The user should be informed to
    choose only one item from each group.
    Use the following information to create your project.
    Clam Chowder 2.79
    Vegetable soup 2.99
    Peppered Chicken Broth 2.49
    Chicken 12.79
    Fish 10.99
    Beef 14.99
    Vanilla Ice Cream 2.79
    Rice Pudding 2.99
    Cheesecake 4.29
    The user shouldnt be able to choose more than one item
    from the same group. The item prices shouldnt be visible to
    the user.
    When the user makes his or her first choice, the running
    total at the bottom of the applet should show the price of
    that item. As each additional item is selected, the running
    total should change to reflect the new total cost.
    The dinner menu should be 200 pixels wide 440 pixels
    high and be centered on the browser screen. The browser
    window should be titled The Menu Program.
    Use 28-point, regular face Arial for the title Dinner Menu.
    Use 16-point, bold face Arial for the dinner menu group titles
    and the total at the bottom of the applet. Use 14-point regular
    face Arial for individual menu items and their prices. If you
    do not have Arial, you may substitute any other sans-serif
    font in its place. Use Labels for the instructions.
    The checkbox objects will use the system default font.
    Note: Due to complexities in the way that Java handles
    numbers and rounding, your price may display more than
    two digits after the decimal point. Since most users are used
    to seeing prices displayed in dollars and cents, youll need to
    display the correct value.
    For this project, treat the item prices as integers. For example,
    enter the price of cheesecake as 429 instead of 4.29. That
    way, youll get an integer number as a result of the addition.
    Then, youll need to establish two new variables in place of
    the Total variable. Run the program using integers for the
    prices, instead of float variables with decimals.
    Youll have the program perform two mathematical functions
    to get the value for the dollars and cents variables. First,
    divide the total price variable by 100. This will return a
    whole value, without the remainder. Then get the mod of the
    number versus 100, and assign this to the cents variable.
    Finally, to display the results, write the following code:
    System.out.println("Dinner Price is $ " + dollars +"." + cents);
    Please send code in notepad or wordpad to [email protected]
    Here are the expectations:
    HTML properly coded
    Java source and properly compiled class file included
    Screen layout as specified
    All menu items properly coded
    Total calculates correctly

               else
                   cb3Desserts.setState(true);
                repaint();
        }

    The specific problem is that when I load he applet, the radio buttons do not work properly and any calculation is made.OK.
    I had a look at the soup radio buttons. I guess the others are similar.
    (a) First, a typo.
    cb1Soups.addItemListener(this);cb2Soups.addItemListener(this);cb2Soups.addItemListener(this);That last one should be "cb3Soups.addItemListener(this)". The peppered chicken broth was never responding to a click. It might be a good idea to write methods that remove such duplicated code.
    (b) Now down where you respond to user click you have:
    Checkbox soupsSelection=soupsG.getSelectedCheckbox();
    if(soupsSelection==cb1Soups)
        dollars +=clamChowderPrice;
    if(soupsSelection==cb2Soups)
        dollars +=vegetableSoupPrice;
    else
        cb3Soups.setState(true);What is that last bit all about? And why aren't they charged for the broth? Perhaps it should be:
    Checkbox soupsSelection=soupsG.getSelectedCheckbox();
    if(soupsSelection==cb1Soups) {
        dollars +=clamChowderPrice;
    } else if(soupsSelection==cb2Soups) {
        dollars +=vegetableSoupPrice;
    } else if(soupsSelection==cb3Soups) {
        dollars +=pepperedChickenBrothPrice;
    }Now dollars (the meal price in cents) will have the price of the soup added to it every time.
    (c) It's not enough to just calculate dollars, you also have to display it to the user. Up near the start of your code you have
    Label theDinnerPriceIs=new Label("Dinner Price is $ "+dollars +"."+cents);It's important to realise that theDinnerPriceIs will not automatically update itself to reflect changes in the dollars and cents variables. You have to do this yourself. One way would be to use the Label setText() method at the end of the itemStateChanged() method.
    (d) Finally, the way you have written itemStateChanged() you are continually adding things to dollars. Don't forget to make dollars zero at the start of this method otherwise the price will go on and on accumulating which is not what you intend.
    A general point: If you have any say in it use Swing (JApplet) rather than AWT. And remember that both Swing and AWT have forums of their own which may be where you get the best help for layout problems.

  • Huge DVD-9 project needs two Dual Layer discs - How to build a from single project?

    Hello Encore Pros,
    I have a DVD project with about 5 hours of video media and it won’t fit on a single DVD-9.  It has to be built onto TWO Dual Layer DVDs.   I’ve created the project as ONE BIG PROJECT in Encore CS6 (Mac Pro 10.7.5) with lots of menus, buttons, timelines, and media.  Here’s the $20,000 question: how will Encore know to build the project onto two DVD-9 discs?  Can I program it to do this and if so, how?  Or do I need to break the project into TWO SEPARATE PROJECTS (both dual layer) and burn individually?   If so, can I simply duplicate the full project and delete all movies/menus/timelines not needed for each new half?  And if that’s the case, I know there'll be some revising elements like setting a new 1st play on disc 2 and some End Action links, etc., but that I can deal with.  I suppose I’d name the two new dual layer projects xxx_pt1 and xxx_pt2.   On the plus side, the Check Project comes up with no errors, so that’s good so far.  Oh, "the horror....... the horror” to quote “Apocalypse Now”
    -- Thanks in advance for help and suggestions.

    Bill Hunt is still MIA. See this link for his instructions on doing the sort of process I was describing.
    Re: Multiple (different) DVD outputs from a single Encore project
    In a similar thread, Hunt refers to a more detailed piece he did on "multi-disc" authoring. But he didn't find the link, and neither have I!
    Edit: Not it, but may add something:

  • Starting New Project, Need to Cleanly get rid of old project.

    I am about to finish up a project today, that I've been working on. I want to clear out my computer of any data/file/etc. so that when I start my new project, I will be starting fresh. What can I do to make sure this happens without trashing anything I'm not supposed to? Avoid fragmenting? Basically want to ensure I am starting with a clean slate for my upcoming project. Any insight would be appreciated!!!
    My configuration is as follows:
    I edit in HDV on a PowerMac G5 dual 2.7, 2G RAM (about to install 2 more G's), 2x250 GB internal hard drives. One hard drive store OS & Apps, the other is my scratch disk. If you need further info, I will be more than happy to give it. Thank you so much in advance!

    Most of the time when you 'erase' a file or a disk, it simply changes the first few charactors in the heading without doing anything to the rest of the information. The file system does not recognize the file/directory anymore but most of the information is still there. This is what file recovery software relies on to pull your files back from the grave.
    "Zeroing" a drive is to write an unrelenting sequence of zeros - which in effect - completely erases everything on the drive. However, there is some magnetic residue left that bad bad people can use to discover all the 'adult' sites you have been visiting and storing material from should they get their hands on your drive. Writing 7 or 32 sequences of zeros is one way to totally erase a disk beyond reclamation.
    In the case of acceptable use, a simple erase is all you need. Do you have something to hide? lol
