OT: Vista laptop restarts itself ?!

Please excuse the off-topic post, but I would really
appreciate any insight
or information about this problem. My laptop, a Dell Inspiron
1525 running
Vista Ultimate, fully updated, I believe, does something
strange: it
restarts itself sometimes. Also, if I choose "Shut Down",
*sometimes* it
restarts instead of shutting down.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Or where I might
look for
answers? Thanks very much in advance.

Wow. I think I'm keeping it clean, but I'll look into that if
other fixes
fail. Thanks, Linda.

  • Trying to Home share an itunes library from Vista laptop to Windows 8 laptop

Alright, so both laptops have been setup the same, home sharing turned on, exact same apple id and password. Both computers can see each other in the dropdown menu for "library",  HOWEVER, while the Vista laptop can see & import the library from the Windows 8 laptop, then Windows 8 laptop cannot see & therefore not import the library from the Vista laptop & out of the system without issue, the router has been checked to ensure that nothing is standing in the way on that end either. Is this some sort of backwards incompatibility? Or am I overlooking something  obscenely obvious? Any and all help is welcome, I have looked at a large number of discussions here and throughout the web already, nothing seems to work for my situation. Please help!!!

    Hello there MicknMadd,
It sounds like one of your computers can see the others library and import from it, but the other does not. You've done a lot of great troubleshooting and verification already, and I would recommend steps 5-7 from the following article to help further troubleshoot:
    Troubleshooting Home Sharing
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    5. Check Firewall settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
For more information on ports used by Apple products, see Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products.
    6. Quit and reopen apps and iTunes
If connectivity issues persist, quit and reopen iTunes on your computer. Then, quit and reopen the apps on your iOS device.
Note that Home Sharing cannot transfer or stream audiobook content purchased from Audible.com. See Audible.com for information on using their content with multiple devices.
    7. Restart your network router
Restart your home network router using the method recommended in documentation from the manufacturer. This may include disconnecting the power cord for thirty seconds or more.
Note: During this period, Internet services such as a VoIP-based phone will not work, and any additional routers may need to be reset in sequence.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Macbook pro 15 retina 2014 restarts itself

I just bought a Mac book pro 15 retina 2014. I bought it from the store and after two days it kept restarting for no reason while I was using it. I went to the store and they replaced it with a new one. I started using new one from Saturday and yesterday it restarted itself just like the previous one. and it displayed the same error message.
    Can anyone help me?

There can be a 100 reasons and things to troubleshoot if you want to get into your Mac laptop, your PC and everything else, with heat, airflow, temperatures, at the top of my list. Laptops run notoriously hot, a Mac running Windows natively will run hotter as well as the fans and cooling are not controlled or well behaved when running Widows.
And if you noticed, the topics and this forum is not about MacBook line of computers to begin with.

  • I just purchased my Macbook Pro retina display OS X 10.7.4 in June 2012. Shortly after I began using it, it began randomly restarting itself while in use. Why and how do I fix this?

So as I said in the title, I purchased my new Macbook Pro retina display OS X 10.7.4 in June 2012 and recieved in early July. Shortly after I started using the laptop, it began randomly restarting itself. It does this about once a week while I am just using the laptop for normal internet browsing. I haven't downloaded any outside software that the system could be rejecting and it is fully charged. Any ideas on why this is happening or how to fix it?
Also this is a total random question, but there is a residue on my laptop that is faint but randomly shows up. I'm almost positive that it is nothing on my hands or where I place the laptop. I wasn't sure if it was something possibly coming from the side vents. Thanks for the help!

Exactly what Shootist007 states - take it in for service or replacement - could be a simple software issue or it could be a hardware issue...
Don't even bother messing with it.....Might screw up even more.....
Make sure your files are backed up in case they give you a replacement....
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out...

  • Itunes 10.5.0.142 keeps restarting itself on Windows 7, how can I turn this off?

All of a sudden, itunes 10.5.0.142 keeps restarting itself on Windows 7.  I did not change any configuration settings on Windows.  How can I disable this?
    Thanks

I should have posted this earlier, but anyway. I restored my laptop to factory version after backing up any useful data, and the first thing I the laptop was restored was connect to the internet, download and install the latest version of iTunes. And Bingo! It worked.

  • Please help! my desktop restarted itself?

    hey guys,
this morning i woke up and turned on my laptop, and i realized that all my information was missing...it basically seemed like my desktop had restarted itself and got rid of everything that was on it. (my music, my photos, everything)
    i freaked out
and then i digged into my computer and found out that under Users, it still had my original information and applications and stuff.
what happened? and how do i get it back so that it starts up the way it used to?
i feel that the other day, i tried to change my "user name" from "na" to Joana (i got my laptop fixed a while back and they named it na...the little house icon...you know? sorry, im not a big computer buff).
so i feel that maybe when i tried to change it it somehow moved everything away?
i hope i explained it alright...

have had the same problem. also not a computer buff - mine had not been in for work when it would go to sleep after i had shut if down. happened a few times then i lost photos, lots of them. took it to local APPLE repairs and they found nothing, 21 days later.
last night it did it again - powered off at home and sleeping when i got to the office.
    any advice?

  • Aptv keeps restarting itself for no apparent reason

For the last week or two my aptv has been restarting itself, usually when I put a program on pause
and come back a few min. later I find I'm back at the icon screen.
My software is up to date and my connection is very good so I'm really puzzled as to why it would
restart on it's own,  and it seems to be happening more often.
As well Hulu seems a little strange, it keeps asking to quite out and restart after an "update" and
it will do this a few times a day, very strange.
Anyone else having these same problems?

I'm experiencing the exact same problems, and I don't think it's a network connectivity issue as I am connected via Ethernet not WiFi. I have also confirmed that none of my other devices are experiencing network drops (iPhone, laptop, desktop) at the same time my AppleTV is rebooting itself. I can replicate the restart problem like clockwork by going into HBO GO and scrolling down through the "Just Added" movies (screen goes blank, light on box blinks 4 times, ticking "thinking" wheel shows on screen, and then the home AppleTV screen displays); and I can almost always get the  "Hulu Plus has updated, please exit and restart" message anytime I try to watch multiple shows of the same series back to back. I've updated my software, unplugged the AppleTV for a few minutes and retried it, reset to factory settings, and then done a complete restore (which took 40 min because it apparently found an update that the update screen didn't see) all to no avail. Nothing I have tried is fixing the problem. I'm wondering if there may be a bug with the latest software update?

  • Satellite P300 keeps restarting itself after initial start up screen.

My Satellite P300 keeps restarting itself after the initial start up screen.
The initial start up screen with the F2 & F12 options at the bottom appears, the screen then goes black, then a cursor appears in the top left hand corner and flashes a couple of times. Then the laptop shuts down and restarts itself and goes through the same process over and over.
This is all with the power adaptor plugged in. If unplugged, it will go through the above mentioned process and shut itself down with no restart.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

    Have you changed anything?

Sometimes it showed Connected with Limited Connectivity. It used to be "Connected to security-enabled network" with my old wireless router. My 2 iphones and another XP laptop both work, all able to access wirelessly without any problem. Wired connection to my vista laptop also works. only wireless to the vista laptop not working. I setup everything (via 192.168.1.1) on my Vista HP laptop. Did I need to update anything on my vista laptop? please HELP.

okay. I just had a chat on linksys online-chat for an hour. The technician walked me through, and finally fixed the problem. The key was not to let Vista detect IP automatically on the wireless connection. 1) go to 192.168.1.1, go to Status tab, copy down the DNS 1/2/3 addresses 2) Start->Ctrl Panel->Network Sharing->Manage network connection a) right click Wireless network connection->properties b) select TCP IP V4, properties c) specify IP addr manually IP addr: 192.168.1.20 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 default gateway: 192.168.1.1 d) specify DNS server address manually type in 2 DNS addresses you copied earlier hit OK 3) restart computer 4) reconnect to wireless network.
(Mod note: Removed non-public information. Thank you.)

  • ITunes restarting itself

Has anyone else experienced problems with iTunes restarting itself everytime I exit the program.  Don't remember when it started.  Running Windows 7 and iTunes 10.1.4.10, but it has been happening for several versions.

I have had this happening on my Windows desktop and laptop also since version 8.x and it still continues on 10.x.
I have no external speakers and no widgets plugged in.
I found one archive thread here that suggests it's a genre-detection thread running in iTunes, but AFAICT you can't turn that off in the Windows version of iTunes.

  • WRTGS54 v7 & Vista Laptop Connectivity problem

    Hello,
I have just bought a WRT54GS v7 because the PC store said my HP laptop (new in October) needed a router that was Vista compatible and my 4 yr old Netgear was not.  So I bought this and installed it.  It is connected to a Motorola SB3100 Surboard cable modem; the ISP is Comcast.
There are three computers on the network; an older Gateway desktop running XP, a 3 yr old Thinkpad, also running XP and normally connected only wirelessly and this new computer, an HP Pavillion running Vista Home Premium.
The problem I am running into is that the HP cannot seem to stay connected to the network.  The IBM never has that problem.  I went to the Live Chat option to ask for help and the first person seemed to figure it out and told me to disable the McAfee and Windows firewalls as the Linksys had built in firewall protection.  I did that last night and everything ran fine.  I got up the morning and had to restart the computer to establish a wireless link.  Which held for about 15 min.  My two successive Live Chat ventures both ended when the online techs told me to make changes to advanced security settings and the connections were terminated.
Oh look, it's time for my blood pressure medicine.
If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated.
    Best to all.
    Bob

Are you using any linksys adapter on VISTA laptop?
Check the connection status after using static Ip on wireless network connection....

  • ICal continually restarts itself

Last Friday I opened iCal for some reason, got what I needed out of it, and quit it. Or so I thought. Later, when I went to select an open application on my dock, I saw iCal was there and running. I thought perhaps I hadn't hit Apple-Q correctly. So I tried right-clicking and hitting "Quit Program" from the dock menu. Nothing happened. I did a force quit. It disappeared from the dock for a few seconds, then reopened itself!
I have force quit several times now, all with the same result. I even shut down my computer - or tried to, as iCal came back up and stalled the shutdown, so I had to do a little deft manuever of force-quitting iCal and hitting the shut down button before it restarted itself again. I left the computer off for awhile, but when I started it back up again, there was iCal to greet me!
I checked my settings. Open at Login is NOT checked. I checked it and then unchecked it, just to make sure. I checked my accounts within iCal, and deactivated my Google calendar account. Still no luck. I am at my wit's end!!
It's not that it eats up a lot of time or space, but it won't quit, nothing seems to be updating, and I get no errors and I don't know why it won't quit!! Help!!! Does anyone know why it is doing this???

EDIT: I also recently plugged my iPhone into a new laptop (after having Home Shared all music and Apps across to it), but when I plug into original PC still has same issues

  • Updated my ipod touch, but it keeps restarting itself constantly

it did this ocasionally before the new update on big programs but now it does it about 5 seconds after it restarts itself, and continuously goes through this cycle unless i shut it down in time before it restarts itself again. any ideas how to fix this?

I have the same problem, where trying to sync my iPod will cause it to restart and I get nowhere with updating it. It's completely frusterating and I'd do anything to get it to stop, but won't restoring it delete everything? I'm not too worried about my songs because they're all saved in the cloud but I have a lot of pictures and I'm not really sure how to back them up, because whenever I try to plug in my iPod and use it through the windows explorer rather than iTunes and just manually move the photos to the hardrive, it restarts and I can't get anywhere...
I have a 4th gen, 8g iPod and windows vista if that helps. Thanks for any feedback, it would be awesome just to get a second opinion.

  • Pavilion DV9000 no bios or anything on screen, restarts itself, blacklight turns on

DV9000 doesn't display anything on the screen except for the backlight when I start it up. It will then restart itself after a few minutes. This continues in a loop until I turn it off.
It was fine until I got a glitchy looking blue screen. So did my graphics card overheat?
    Thanks.

Ive seen several referenced postings in the forum to overheating and other warranty issues with this laptop.  I bought one used, reloaded it to factory image, and its exhibiting slowdowns, like its running at half speed.  I suspect over temp, but havent put a tem monitoring sw package on it yet
Ive seen a link to a list of problems that HP willfix, but the link is stale.  Can anyone provide an update as to what HP will fix and what they wont?
Regarding the otemp situation, anyone have suggestions on what to do to make this thing a bit more reliable, like how to clean out fan unit and cooling chamber, etc?
BTW the exact model is a pavilion dv9408nr
