OT: Web Sharing (Apache) on the Mac

I am wanting to set my OSX 10.4.8 G4 up with Web Sharing and
PHP.
When I open the Preferences, I can see that Personal Web
Sharing is not
enabled, so I click on "Start". The button becomes disabled,
and I see "Web
Sharing starting up...", and that's all I get. It never
starts.
Where would I go to even begin troubleshooting this?

I'm trying to import a cd to my mac air from my pc.  downloadedAbout the Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update. The mac recognized the pc and the cd , but fails to play or import it. i get the message the cd could not be found. Suggestions?

You can't share/play a music CD using Remote Disk. It's a limitation that Apple built in.
"MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio CD media with Remote Disc."
Remote Disk is limited to data transfers.
You will have to use the MBA external superdrive, or another compatible external DVD device hooked directly to the Macbook Air.
Otherwise, you will need to rip the CD's contents using your PC and transfer the music as data files.

  • Personal Web Sharing Works on One Mac, Not on Other

I can't get Personal Web Sharing to work with my MacBook Pro. It does work with my iMac. Yes, I can turn it on just fine on the MacBook, by means of System Preferences->Sharing, but I can't successfully use the Personal Web http:// link I see there as a URL in my iMac's browser. When I try, it tells me it can't connect to the host, i.e., the MacBook. When I do the same in reverse, from my MacBook browser with my iMac as target (though the local IP address and the short-user-name are of course different), the connection works fine.
I don't think I'm using an incorrect local IP address to try to get to my MacBook. I've checked that. And I do have an index.html file in the appropriate Sites folder on each machine.
I'm using Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8 on both machines.
The problem also shows up on Safari on my iPhone. It can access Personal Web Sharing on the iMac but it can't on the MacBook.
I wonder if it's a Bonjour problem? I don't exactly know if Bonjour is running on the MacBook, or how to tell if it is, or how to activate it if it isn't running.
Or, if it's not Bonjour, what could it be?

    Doug,
'sudo apachectl start' asked for my password and seemed to have no complaints after getting it. But it didn't tell me anything, and it didn't make a difference.
After checking out some FAQs at
    http://httpd.apache.org/
I tried 'apachectl -k start' and got:
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
    Unable to open logs
It made no difference whether Personal Web Sharing was on or off in System Preferences when I did that.
I do know that the Apache log file is apparently not there where apachectl expects it. I don't understand the other stuff it said, but it looks like maybe it was trying to use an IP address of 0.0.0.0 instead of 10.0.1.16.
10.0.1.16 is the local IP address of my MacBook.
I tried 'apachectl configtest' and got 'Syntax OK'.
    I tried moving index.html to /Library/WebServer/Documents -- no help.
I tried creating a new configuration file in the way you said to try -- no help.
No matter what I try, I get:
    Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 10.0.1.16.
I'm beginning to wonder if the Apache environment might not need to be reinstalled. But I'm not sure how. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8, but the original install disk I have is 10.5.1. Software Update moved me up from that to 10.5.8 over time. Your further thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated ...

  • Web sharing/Apache not working

My web sharing doesn't seem to be working.
When I have it enabled in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences, I try to click on the link
    My Computer's Website
    http://myIPaddress
I get an error message, in both Safari and Firefox, saying that I cannot make a connection to the server. This is similar to other threads in this section except for the following:
    - I do have a /var/log/apache2 directory
    - I did a chmod 755 on the directory
    - the directory is empty
    - http://localhost does not work
when I look through a list of my tasks (on the Activity Monitor), I don't see anything related to apache so I'm wondering if my Web Sharing has not initiated the apache server.
    I'm running 10.5.6 on a PowerBook G4.
    Thanks in Advance

You shouldn't see any apache items in Activity Monitor. I've got web sharing on, and I see a bunch of httpd processes in Activity Monitor. Try repairing permissions on your hard drive. Also, look for some config files located in /etc/apache2/. I see the following files/folders in there on my machine:
    drwxr-xr-x 13 root wheel 442 Nov 24 2007 extra
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 17684 Jan 27 07:21 httpd.conf

  • Web Sharing (Apache) Q&A?

    Howdy.
Im in the process of setting up the apache server in OS X for my webspace. I'd rather host my site for now until I generate enough traffic to warrant me paying someone to host it for me.
With that being said, I have purchased a domain name (from Yahoo business). My question is, what now? I have read the numerous tutorials on setting up the server and where to put my files... but i havent been able to find my missing link. How do i configure the apache web server to utilize my domain name? How do i direct traffic to my domain name which is my computer?
    Thanks in advance!

You need to get a "static" IP address from your ISP. They can also provide you with DNS addresses. Then you need to link the DNS addresses to your .com domain name by logging onto the management page of wherever you registered the domain name. There are workarounds but none of this is really as simple as it sounds. Also, by attempting to host your own website, you are opening yourself up to a lot of potential security risks not to mention major administrative hassles. In addition, your site is going to be s....l....o....w because you are not going to have the bandwidth necessary to support this kind if traffic. It would be much better for you to set up your site on a paid hosting service. There are some really good ones that are very inexpensive like SiteGround which will also maintain the mail servers you will need to have your "own" e-mail address ([email protected]). The Apache web server included with OSX is the real thing but it's much more useful for locally testing your web site or for hosting a site on a local network.

  • Pixelpost and Personal Web Sharing in Tiger

    Dear Friends:
I figured out how to install Pixelpost (for a photoblog) in my OS X Tiger system -- by using MAMP. I changed the Document Root in MAMP so that now it looks to the Personal Web Sharing folder in the Mac (the Sites folder in the /usr/ space). The installation of Pixelpost works fine, letting me add images, manage it, etc. However, when I type in the computer address ("personal website") as provided in the Sharing tab under system preferences, it does not bring me at all to the photoblog. For instance:
http://my.computer.address/ (just brings me to the regular Apache Server notice that it is running)
    if I type this:
    http://my.computer.address/~username/
It brings me to the generic OS X page in place. But when I type:
    http://my.computer.address/~username/pixelpost/
it opens to the pixelpost directory which I placed in the Sites folder. What I'd like to do is figure out what address will call up this blog so that others can access it.
The blog comes up fine under this URL:
    http://localhost:8888/pixelpost/
But that's not a proper address for external viewing. So, what address should I provide others? I've tried various configurations with the address provided in the Sharing tab of System Preferences, but no luck so far.
    Thanks!
    N

I changed the Document Root in MAMP so that now it looks to the Personal Web Sharing folder in the Mac (the Sites folder in the /usr/ space
I think you mean /Users/ space. /usr is something completely different.
http://my.computer.address/ (just brings me to the regular Apache Server notice that it is running)
Then it means you didn't change the DocumentRoot like you think you did. If you did, and assuming you restarted Apache after changing the DocumentRoot, then this URL would point to whatever directory you specified (/Users/whoever/Sites) and not /Library/WebServer/Documents.
But [http://localhost:8888/pixelpost> is not a proper address for external viewing.
but it can be. If all you're using this for is PixelPost then just setup the port forwarding on your router to forward to port 8888 rather than port 80 and you're done.
Now, that said, the fact that you're using two different ports here (port 80 and port 8888) means that, at the very least, you are running two virtual hosts, or quite possibly two completely separate Apache instances.
That could explain why changing the DocumentRoot doesn't help. You may have changed either the PixelPost VirtualHost configuration, or the MAMP-specific server configuration, but that's not the server/virtualhost you're talking to on port 80.
I've never used MAMP, so I don't know how it installs, but it wouldn't surprise me to find that it installs a whole new Apache distribution and you'd need to find that server and its configuration files to fix the DocumentRoot problem, if that's the way you want to go.
You can also fix it via a simple Alias in the standard Apache configuration - just alias /pixelpost to /Users/whoever/sites/pixelpost - that way users who hit /pixelpost on your server will get the User-specific directory, while all other URLs continue to be served via /Library/WebServer/Documents. This might improve security and avoid the possibility of leaking other content from your home directory that you don't want to make available.

  • Web Sharing not starting up

i have recently installed the Darwin web streaming serer onto my Mac Mini (running on Mac OS X 10.4.9) and since installing it my web sharing option doesnt start up or says web sharing is not installed. i have restarted my mac and re installed Mac OS X but still doesnt work. i am trying to avoid reformatting my hard drive.
    Jak
Mini Mac Power PC, Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Don't reformat your hard drive, it won't do any good. The streaming server takes the place of apache which Apple considers "web sharing". If you started up apache and it also listened on port 80, which would you expect to get when you made an http request? You now have "web sharing" up all the time (confirm this by putting "http://localhost/" into your browser) just not with the official Apple server, which is why you can't select that option.

  • Web Sharing starting up....

    Hi all
I'm a newbie that would like to learn the basics of PHP and web applications.
I've followed instructions and upgraded the current php on my system. I used the terminal and followed step by step instructions as i have no idea what i'm doing with that application, and coding. I tried to test a simple php file (that tells you the current date/time) in dreamweaver (soon after) and it didn't work. =(
Well, After following more and more instructions i find my machine with a new oracle user, some sw folder with an application called fink inside it, and all sorts of little files and stuffed folders that seemed to do nothing positive for my current goal.
I found out shortly after that i probably, simply didn't have apache up and running so once again i've folowed instruction but i've got the following issue: I'm trying to get the apache to start up by clicking the Personal Web Sharing 'start' button in the Sharing area in the System Preferences. The button works, it all goes grey which tells me that it's doing something... but unfortuantely nothing seems to be happenning. I've been through the forums and followed many terminal instructions that have been given to people with the same issues but nothing seems to be working.
I've gone to work with all the most recent instructions and simply by using the terminal to get rid of a few #'s to get its native php kick started, and pressing that start up web sharing button in the preferences, seems to have worked fine. I haven't tested that .php file to test if its worked or not, but the Web Sharing started with no issues.
I guess i'm a little worried that with all this tweaking and upgrading of my system that i may have i killed my chances at getting this php working on my imac, and probably injured it in other ways too.
Can anyone give me any hints as to what i've managed to do to my machine and how i may be able to fix anything that i may have broken.
If my novice terminology isn't helping much, i do apologise and if anyone out there is willing to help me out i'll do my best to make this all make sense.
    Nev
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Rick
    right.. I've been on php.net
Gone into the intro section... copied the script from http://uk3.php.net/manual/en/introduction.php into a blank dreamweaver file. saved it as index.php and previewed the file in my safari window staright from dreamweaver (which has a root of file:///Users/.......htm)
I get a blank screen (so i guess that means its not reading the php)
I tried testing it locally from my works ftp area... same deal (root was like www...../test/Index.php)
I've also tried just typing in http://192/168/0/19/~Byron/ and that isn't even showing the normal file that used to show up as standard (from the sites folder)
which is why i'm thinking i've done something bad...
    My firewall's off =)
It's not starting up the Personal Web Sharing (and i reckon thats the problem)
When im just doing normal html static sites in DW its fine.. no problems with viewing locally at all. Its as soon as i introduce server technology (php) that it becomes un-viewable. (well it loads the file... it just doesn't read anything thats on it).
Yeah its just in the Local area. I'm just trying to view pages locally, on the machine that created the files. Then upload them to the ftp server later on, once i've got it all running properly.
Php wouldn't have NEEDED upgrading, it was just one of the things that php.net said would have been a good idea for me to do. (so i followed the advice from their site) Now i think about it, i actually upgraded php (from that site) before i found out how to unlock the native php from the system.
    Would that effect anything?

  • Web sharing & 403 Firbidden, one more time

I've read, to varying degrees of understandability, various articles and help files on the 10.5 web sharing issue. I've tried & failed. I've come to the article below, which I think states clearly why web sharing does not work out of the box with 10.5.5. I want to follow the ix it offers, but, as with so many other articles, it talks a level or 2 above my expertise.
    My questions include:
    • How do you "Navigate to the Apache2 user configuration directory"? What does that mean?
    • What is "cd /private/etc/apache2/users"? Is it a file? Is it something you type in Terminal?
    • What it "tee"?
Questions go on along these lines until the end of the article; in short, is there a how-to for Apache / Terminal beginners. The overriding question is, why hasn't Apple addressed the web sharing snag by the 10.5.5 iteration of the OS?
FYI I am hung up on web sharing directly due to my move from Palm to iTouch as PDA. With the Palm Zire31 I was able to do light word processing, and did hundreds of paragraphs with it; also as a reader, and reads tens of thousands of articles on it. I want to do the same with the iTouch. To that end I've duly downloaded and installed BookZ and eReader, to enable me to move articles back & forth from the iTouch to my new iMac, to be blocked by the dreaded 403 error.
After reckoning this problem I hope a 3rd party will come out with a real light WP app like that for the Palm: WordSmith.
    Here's the article-
Configure Apache Web Sharing for user accounts in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard:
    http://www.gigoblog.com/2007/11/08/configure-apache-web-sharing-for-user-account s-in-mac-os-x-105-leopard/
    Someone please help me.

Leopard web sharing works just fine out of the box (well, it does for me anyway), although if you updated from Tiger rather than doing a fresh install (not really a good idea for new OS version), you may get the 403 error. Once turned on, it is as simple (?) as dropping files into your user's Sites folder.
That article is horrible - I don't know what the heck they are doing using a utility such as tee to edit configuration files. For stuff like this, the free text editor TextWrangler works as well as shell utilities (especially for those not comfortable with them), and it can also navigate to and open those normally hidden files.
As for Apache, it is industrial strength, so there is a lot of stuff you can do with it (don't ask me, I'm just a duffer). The default websites on your computer (as shown in the System Preferences > Sharing > Web Sharing pane) have links to the documentation on your computer, or you can wander around and find other references such as Apache DevCenter.

  • Web Sharing, Firewall, & Security Issue

I recently turned on/activated Web Sharing, but I forgot to turn on the Firewall. Now I think I may have gotten malware, or some other sort of bad stuff on my machine.
Am I right in this thinking? If so, what steps might I take to offset the damage? Thanks.
Quick background note: I was experimenting with the using the Apache server that comes built in with Mac (because I'm learning mysql, php, etc.) And this tutorial mentions the importance of activating the Firewall if the user turns on Web Sharing http://www.macinstruct.com/node/112
    Specs:

I didn't know about Quarantine being included in the Leopard OS ("Quarantine is a feature of Mac OS X introduced in version 10.5 (aka Leopard)) Thanks for pointing that out.
More generally, I've been using Macs for several years and really like them, but this was the first time I activated/enabled Web Sharing for using the Apache server software and so I was just a little worried about that. And also, it seems as though my system has been working more slowly than it usually does.
BTW: I did some of the most commonly suggested steps for improving performance.
    1. Check to see I have latest OS updates. [Done]
    2. Run/verify/repair disk permissions via Disk Utility [Done]
    3. Clear browser caches [Done]
    Thanks again.

  • Keep Web Sharing from launching at System Startup

    If I run
    $ sudo apachectl start
and look in Preferences > Sharing
Web Sharing is checked (and rightly so).
But, if at this moment I were to restart my Macbook, Web Sharing (Apache) would be started.
How do I keep Apache from starting at System Startup?
Ideally, I would like to be able to 'manually' start and stop Apache using apachectl, and I don't want to have to run
    $ sudo apachectl stop
    or uncheck Web Sharing
before shutting down or restarting the computer.

If web sharing is on when you restart your Mac, the Mac will restart the service automatically (I'm hard-pressed to think of a reason why one would not want it to work that way, and I suspect the devs had the same problem).  If you don't want that to be the case, there are a couple of options. Easiest, I suspect, would be to create a script (using the apachectl command you already know).  You can set that up with launchd to disable web sharing at login time (for various reasons running scripts at shutdown - though possible - is discouraged; such scripts can accidentally cancel shutdown, and obviously won't be run if there's a crash or power interruption).  You can adjust the permissions so that it can be executed by a normal user while still running as an admin (make sure you disable user write permission to that file, so someone can't hijack it to run other commands as admin), and then the script can be used to manually start/stop web sharing as well.

  • How can I get Web Sharing to work?

I am having trouble getting web sharing to work - the name for the folder is a NetBIOS name which I can't change - and that is the first part of the problem. Is this a known issue because I have tried it on several computers and it does not work like previous versions.

    Perhaps a little more detail?
What error message do you see when you try and access your pages?
You also might need to install a newer version of PHP - one that is compatible with Apache2 (as Leopard uses Apache 2 instead of the Apache 1.3 Tiger used).
There are also a number of settings that the upgrade process does not migrate over.

  • Personal Web Sharing or equivalent?

I'm working on a server running Mac OS X Server version 10.4.5. I'm trying to set up personal web sharing, or whatever server equivalent there is, but I'm running into a major problem. Everything I've read tells me that I should be able to go to System Preferences->Sharing and there should be a checkbox to turn on personal web sharing. However the only options there are:
    Remote Login
    Apple Remote Desktop
    Remote Apple Events
Does anybody know what's causing this, or what server equivalents I can use?

The sharing thing in system preferences works on regular OS X, but not in server.
Whatever you want to share, you have to put in the sites folder of your home directory. There's a fairly detailed explanation of it on pages 53-54 in the web technologies admin pdf (I downloaded it from the apple site somewhere, but I can't remember exactly where - probably in manuals or downloads. I'd be happy to email it to you if you like). Good luck.

  • Personal Web Sharing and Filemaker Server Advanced

After migrating from FileMaker Server-7 Advanced and installing version-8 Advanced web components (w/Easy Install) and restarting the Mac, Personal Web Sharing refuses to activate. I also cannot access the Filemaker Admin Console to create the FMSA account to register it with the database server.
OSX Console log listed this error below when trying to start Apace with Personal Web Sharing:
    Syntax error on line 1 of /Library/FileMaker Server/Web Publishing/web-configuration/WEB-INF/conf/mod_jk.conf:
Cannot load /usr/libexec/httpd/modjkfm.so into server: (reason unknown)
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
Line 1 of the mod_jk.file reads:
    LoadModule jkfmmodule libexec/httpd/modjkfm.so
What needs to be corrected so I can start web sharing and access the FileMaker Web Publishing Engine in the browser?
Using Mac OSX 10.4.6 on Mac Mini w/Intel dual core

Apache is trying to load modjkfm.so which should be stored in /usr/libexec/httpd, but it isn't.
This file should be installed by the Filemaker Server installer. If it wasn't installed by the Easy Install option, check the other install options to see if it's there.
