[OT] what's ACME?

Hello,
since tehcnically it's still friday in some far-western timezone, I feel entitled to ask a friday question:
What is the cultural reference (probably, of US origin) when a code sample mentions "acme" as a company name (often in package namespace com.acme.xxx, or as the example name of some company supposedly managed by the code).
Although Wikipedia has entries to describe the etymology and history of the venerable foo and bar variable names, I haven't found such an entry for acme
The only reference I know of is the cartoon Roadrunner : all devices bought by the evil coyotte come in "acme"-stamped boxes.
Do you think it's the case (that computer scientists inspire from Roadrunner)?
Even then, where did the cartooners themselves coin this name?
Thanks,
Jerome

Damn, I don't know how I missed that... I must have searched for "amce" (I mispelled that twice when I was writing the OP this morning).
Thanks for pointing this out. Note that the Wikipedia page indeed attributes the creation of this fictional company to Loney Tunes cartoons.

The way I heard it was that ACME stands for A Company that Makes Everything.
I'm a bit surprised the Wikipedia article doesn't mention that theory. Would need a reliable source I guess.Interestingly, the French Wikipedia page does mention this acronym :o)
Using those words as a search term, I found a lot of collaborative sites that spell out this meaning or a derivative (Another Company..., American company,...).

Also linked from the Wikipedia page, is a parodic complaint (plaintiff Will E Coyote, against defendant "ACME Corporation"): http://www.torinfo.com/justforlaughs/coyote_v_acme.html:
The sequence of collisions resulted in systemic physical damage to Mr. Coyote, (...) The distracting and embarassing nature of this symptom has been a major impediment to Mr. Coyote's pursuit of a normal social life (...)
As the Court is no doubt aware, Defendant has a virtual monopoly of manufacture and sale of goods required by Mr. Coyote's work. It is our contention that Defendant has used its market advantage to the detriment of the consumer of such specialized products as itching powder, giant kites, Burmese tiger traps, anvils, and two-hundred-foot-long rubber bands (...)
Mr. Coyote respectfully requests that the Court (...) censure Defendant (...) and reaffirm the right of the individual predator to equal protection under the law.

  • ZxR Plugged in Headphones to ACM - Now No Speaker Sound!

    It never ends!
I plugged in my Sennheiser 350 headphones into the ACM to see how they would sound. My Klipsch Pro-Media 2.1 speakers are now silent. I unplugged the headphones and the speakers are still silent. I rebooted the computer, checked the Control panel (Sound Blaster and Windows), checked the Volume Control...everything I can think of. The control panels show activity when I'm playing sounds but I hear nothing.
I plugged the headphones back in and the volume is weak even when the ACM knob is turned all the way up.
I have no idea what's going on.
    This sucks.

The "issue" you posted is not really an issue. It is simply a fact of how the product works. I used the Xonar Phoebus and it worked in exactly the same manner.
Think of it as using a microphone that has a mute toggle switch on its length. If you flick the analog switch, the mic no longer provides input for the sound card, the sound card's software control panel for the microphone does not mute itself.
Thanks for the info. My third post was written while you were writing yours.
I was so focused on the ACM I did not try plugging the headphones into the jack on my speakers. The speakers auto-muted and when I unplugged the phones the sound to the speakers was restored. So this is all a misunderstanding on my part.
Not sure why the sound I mentioned previously was skewed but resetting to default cleared that up.

  • ACME Video demo: Members can't log on

    Using: JDeveloper 3.0 (build 532)
Tesing the ACME Video demo in JDeveloper's own environment (ie, without a separate web server), no member can sign in to the ACME video store web interface.
    scott/tiger member/password doesn't work...
I proceeded to create a new ACME video member and to my surprise, I even received an e-mail welcoming me as a new ACME video member (very nice touch for the demo), but still when at the welcome screen for the ACME video store, I could not log in as a member with the new userid/password.
Just for interest sake, I tried to create another new user with the same member name and login as my first member that I created and as expected, it told me that that user existed. So, it is obviously referencing the database for verification that the member already exists, but member login just doesn't work for some reason.
When trying to login into the ACME video database member login screen, the error I get is the usual "invalid login" that you get when you enter an invalid password or userid.
I even tried entering the member# (eg, 2250 for scott/tiger) in case the interface was expecting the member# rather than the name, but no luck there.
I logged into the ACME Oracle database directly in SQL, and verified userid/password for all the members in the ACME_MEMBERS table, but none of the logins work.
Any ideas to what the problem is? I have yet
to track down the code where the password is being verified so that maybe I can see exactly why the login is failing, but I have not had any luck tracking it down as of yet. . . but I'll keep looking.
I'd really like to see this thing work to understand more about JDeveloper and it's features.

    hi mason mason,
iChat 3 has a feature that blocks multiple logins form the same screen name. this effects different apps on the same computer and trhe same name on different computers.
It also has a check box in iChat > Preferences > Accounts that can be set to over-ride this. (select the screen name on the left and then the Information tab)

  • Flex with ACME installation of Coldfusion

After a tremendously-difficult attempt (my own fault
largely!) I have been able to get up the "ACME Guide" installation
of Apache, ColdFusion, MySQL and Eclipse. Now it's time to add Flex
(and hopefully PHP5 eventually...). I am in good shape at this
point because I had to install a new OS so my trial dl will be new.
If I can get this working and the contact database and file
upload tutorials perfectly functional (which will prove it's
usability to me), I will purchase all I need to migrate over to
this way of doing things from Flash/PHP.
Does anyone know what the best way to setup Flex is, in
Eclipse, when you have an underlying ACME structure for everything
else? Where can I go wrong, what would be good practice for
    installation locations, etc.?
    Thanks kindly,
    Shawn
ps, the ACME Guide installation for ColdFusion is here, and
worth every word of reading, especially if you are a beginner like
    me...
    http://www.acidlabs.org/extras/acme/

Thanks. Installing Flex last night was a breeze, I just want
to make sure everything is as centralized and logical as possible
given the ACME changes. For example, I want all my projects in one
area, I want all the web-open stuff to go into the proper folders
based on the website (1 of 3 right now) in the Apache VirtualHosts
I made, etc. and I'm hoping I can now configure Flex like that,
including db connectivity with Quantum DB plug-in if necessary, and
the free version of Data Services, and communication with CF. I'll
    check into the RDS section.
There's a huge difference for someone like me between a plug
and play install of PHP/Apache/MySQL to plop in PHP files for use
with Flash...and this huge (definitely beautiful, but complex)
environment all installed and configured manually...I'll be glad
when the CF7.0.2/Flex2 books start hitting the stores.
I still need PHP because I still have a site that will rely
on Flash/PHP...and one site I host for someone has the GuestBook
written in PHP...no other use for PHP on my server, but definitely
need it for now at least. Obviously, the big plan is to move
everything over, and I'm sure that day will come...

  • ACME video on Java Web Server 2.0

ACME video was fairly easy to get running using the built in web server provided with JDeveloper 3.0. Things got a bit more difficult when I tried to deploy the web application portion to Java Web Server 2.0.
Here's what I had to do to get it to work...
    1. The acmevideo_deploy.properties file must be copied independently to the JWS2.0 root directory. If an attempt to access the site fails indicating that this file could not be found, you should place it in whatever directory contains the file acmepropfile_loc.txt. The program is designed to write this file out to help you locate where the properties file should go. Too bad there is no mention of this in the docs!
    2. The imageURL property should be set to imageURL=/acmevideo/images/ for the image files to be found by the html generated by servlets. This value is set in the acmevideo_deploy.properties file mentioned above.
    3. Similarly, the webAppURL propery should set to point to the JWS2.0 server location. For example, on my system it's webAppURL=http://localhost:8080/servlet/WebAppServlet
    4. The following EJB jar files located in <JDEVELOPER>/samples/acmevideo/ejb/server must be added to the c:/acmedir directory and referenced in the CLASSPATH set in the batch file created and used to execute the web server.
    EJBGeneratedRentals.jar
    EJBGeneratedTitleQueries.jar
    EJBSourceRentals.jar
    EJBSourceTitleQueries.jar
    5. The jsdk.jar file that is referenced in the CLASSPATH and which you are directed to copy into acmedir is not required and does not reside in the location specified.
Hope this helps anyone trying to get the sample running in all of its <ahem> glory. :-) Looks like a good sample app to base a project on if you aren't ready for J2EE or your application platform doesn't fully support the specification.

There is no need to install OAS or Oracle8i to test the servlet/jsp functionality in JDeveloper 3.0. You might want to check to insure that you installed all available components during installation (a few of them are hidden and you must scroll down to select them). Try running a few of the servlet/jsp samples before moving on to the full ACME video sample.
    Hope this helps,

I ordered my macbook pro 17. Awaiting it's arrival. Can you tell me, please, what are the dimensions of the box? I want to buy an attache case that the foam padding fits nicely into. Love that packing, from the photos.

    Hello.

  • ABAP Courses in the ACM Professional Development Centre

The Association for Computing Machinery offers four ABAP courses in their Professional Development Centre (http://pd.acm.org/netg_listing.cfm).  See the section "SAP Development & Reporting."
    "ABAP Web Application Server Development"
    "ABAP 6.10 Overview"
    "ABAP Reporting 6.10"
    "ABAP Objects 6.10 Overview "
If you have tried these courses, what did you think of them?

Use of the Professional Development Centre requires membership in the ACM.  Therefore you are correct, you must pay for ACM membership to access the courses.
Let me know what you think when you are done.  I had the opposite reaction to the "ABAP 6.10 Overview" course.  It seems the Overview is well named and that is gives a nice high level introduction to ABAP, but that it is not detailed enough to get someone programming new ABAP without additional materials or training.

  • What principle of creation of packages?

    Hi!
What principle of creation of packages in java?
    E.g.
    I hava classes:
    SystemSettings.class
    UserSettings.class
In this classes I set system and user settings. E.g. user settings are: language, look&feel and so on.
In what packet I must put this classes?
    com.myproject.options is a good packet?
Have anywhere documentation of principle of creation of packeges in java?

Package names usually start with the reversed domain name of the organization that "owns" them. So if your company is acme, and you own the domain acme.com, then your package names would start with com.acme. You'd probably further break them down by product or project. So you might have something like
    com.acme.common
    com.acme.common.net
    com.acme.common.preferences
and so on for libraries used by all products, and then for your Whiz Bang Gimcrack product, you might have
    com.acme.gimcrack
    com.acme.gimcrack.server
and so on for the different parts of that product.
If you're just developing your own private code, then you can just start your package names with your name or whatever is convenient for you.

  • What's the difference in the user experience of ion3, wmii and dwm.

I want to try something new, especially some new concepts, not just another wm, nor I actually 'need' something -  in the moment xfce just works for me. Of course, I have thoroughly read the (available) documentation of these WMs and tested a session, but they are all too different and I feel I need some shared experience in order to decide in which one to invest more time. I would like to ask people that have wider experience to spot some strong or weak points of each WM - but in no way it should be like 'this one is better' or sth. - especially ones that are not instantly obvious - from the descriptions on the home site or limited testing,
For example - wmii talk 9P, and this sound really cool, but I have no damn idea how this could be actually useful. Dwm is extremely minimalist, and I am not sure if it is not too minimalist to be practical.
Again, I don't need advice like what Wm to choose (which is essentially a stupid question), but just mentioning peculiar spots of each one, especially not instantly obvious ones.
    Thank you in advance.
P.S. If there is already a topic, that is close to that, I'll appreciate provided link - my search found just general WM topics, as well as topics for specific WM, which was useful, but not completely enough.
P.P.S. If someone thinks ratpoison is unfairly ignored, one may provide its advantages, although I just somehow do not like it (nothing reasanoble)

The three (and I'll throw in Ratpoison because I love it) seem to have distinct approaches to the way you're expected to use windows.
DWM expects you to have one main window focused and a few others that you do want to see, but don't need to have focused at full size. The way it puts them along the edge is pretty nice on a widescreen monitor. Virtual desktops are provided since it would be a pain to cycle all the way through your window list whenever you wanted to change.
wmii seems (I only played with it a little) to be based largely on columns. This is very similar to Plan 9's editor Acme. Heck, when I first saw the screen shot on the wmii page I thought I was looking at Acme. You divide the screen into (usually two) columns and can arrange your windows within those as you choose. It's a fairly nice approach, marrying the simplicity of DWM's "main window" concept with the flexibility of other managers by having only a couple of "places" for windows (the columns), but multiple windows in each, whose exact positioning doesn't matter much. Tags are substituted for conventional workspaces. I haven't played with this feature.
Ion3 (which I used for a while) is based on the idea that you will divide the screen into just a couple of panes, and group your windows into those. Most of your windows will be invisible at any given time, but you can get to them all easily with the tab strip at the top of each pane, showing its associated windows. In this WM each window is in a definite place, unlike in Ratpoison, in which hidden windows are just hidden, and associated with no pane in particular. Ion also assumes that you will have some programs that don't play nice with a tiled manager, and allows the creation of virtual desktops that contain floating windows. Virtual desktops in this WM are pretty much the same as those in your standard floating WM.
The key to "getting" Ratpoison (which I have used a lot, and am using now) is that unlike the other three, you're not expected to have a complex layout of screen panes. Although you could create something of arbitrary complexity using the vertical and horizontal spit commands, it would quickly become a nightmare to work with, and there is no easy way to switch between layouts because, while you can save and load them, windows are not associated with particular panes on the screen, and will end up who-knows where. Instead, a Ratpoison user wants to switch between windows by hitting ^T (remappable, I use my Windows key) and then the number that was assigned when each window was created. As you may notice, this is how screen works as well. You quickly learn to remember these numbers, just like a screen user or Nethack player. 90% of the time I work with only one window on the screen switching between it and my alternate window, and the other 9% of the time I have two windows (mostly when I want to drag and drop things, but sometimes for reference material). 1% of the time I might hit three or [gasp!] four.
While the other three WMs seek to make it easier to manage your on screen windows, Ratpoison takes the approach that you probably don't need to have more than a couple of windows on screen at one time. Based on this logic, Ratpoison doesn't provide virtual desktops. If your windows aren't on screen, why do you need more virtual screens for them not to be on? Ratpoison does provide window groups, which serve a similar function. Unlike virtual desktops, switching groups does not change what's on your screen; it only changes the list of windows you are working with. This may sound like a pain, but keep in mind that you, as a Ratpoison user, probably have fewer than two panes on your screen. It's not hard to switch both of those to something else, and half the time you only want to change one of them (e.g. drag and drop between window groups). Ratpoison also supports multiple screens, which are treated much like panes on a single screen, except of course you can not delete them (senseless) or move windows between them (X11 limitation; not Ratpoison specific).
Another nice Ratpoison feature is that you can tell it not to manage certain windows, and you can tell it to leave some padding between windows and the edge of the screen. So I can run an unmanaged Rox sidebar to hold try icons, status monitors, a trash can, and volume control, and reserve that space for it with some padding. I can also remove that padding or change its size if I want to cover the sidebar.

  • Forte, Tuxedo and ACMS

    All -
Does Forte have an interface to Tuxedo and/or ACMS? Have any of you used it?
I would appreciate any information I could get. Please respond to me
directly, as I am not a regular member of the list.

    Hello Joey,
I would suggest that you use BEA WebLogic Server to provide a web interface to
your Tuxedo application. BEA has an API called "Jolt", which allows you to provide
a Java-based interface (via Servlets/JSP, etc.) to your Tuxedo application. I
am not familiar with how Tuxedo works with Apache/Tomcat, but I can assure you
that you will have a lot more support and features if you go with BEA's various
APIs and tools. Refer to the following links for more information:

Also, there is a newsgroup dedicated to BEA Tuxedo.

    Hey guys,
I'm running into some troubles since a couple of days... I was working on a way to give parameters to X while launching it from kdm and now there are some things that don't work.
If I launch kate or gedit from a terminal, nothing happens, as if the program was still launching. But nothing. No cpu usage or other signs of activity. I've tryed waiting but after 5 minutes I was borred so I pressed ctrl+c to close the program.
Same thing if I launch gedit. gvim still works.
Also, if I'm in konqueror and type / as the url, X freezes. If i click a bookmark pointing to /home/me/ konqueror freezes but not X.
I then try to "save as" something from firefox and firefox freezes....
I sometimes get a fullscreen window opening from nowhere and then close imidiatly. It's too fast to see if it is a kate or gedit or other window...
What could be wrong?? Even if I try to set back my original settings, it still happens. I've tryed moving ~/.kde to ~/.kde.bak, an old (and working) /etc/X11/xorg.conf, nothing works...:(

  • What happens on iCloud (ex. contacts) when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?

What happens on iCloud when multiple family members use the same Apple ID?  For example if we all choose to use iCloud for contacts, are they all merged together?  We use the same Apple ID so we can use find my iPhone to keep track of the whole family.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
    1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
    2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
    3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
    4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
    5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
    6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.
