OT - Youtube in 720 or 1080?

Does it make a difference if a video is uploaded to YouTube at 720 or 1080? Youtube is going to compress it anyways, just curious to hear what others think. I did a test video and wasn't able to see much difference, however, it could have just been that video. Are there other reasons/benefits to uploading in one size or the other?
Thanks.

Play this video at full screen and you will see the difference between 1080 and 720 videos on YouTube. Make shure you set the video to play at 1080.

  • New Apple TV starts as 720 not 1080?

    Hi
I have just bought a new Apple TV directly from Apple.
I am connecting to a Sony Bravia TV, but when connecting it reports resolution as 720, not 1080. I have tried a different cable, but no joy.
I also have BT Vision through another AV channel and will switch ports / cables if I have to, but I am hoping you will tell me I am missing something simple :-) Please?

Not what I was hoping to hear, but at least I know now!
    Thanks for your help

  • 720 to 1080

    Hi all,
    I have a quick question.
I have FCP X and film all my footage in 1080p.   I finished my project and uploaded it only to realize that the footage was downgraded to 720.
Does anyone know a quick way to just change the project I already pieced together from being 720 to 1080 so that I don't have to re edit anything?
    Any help would be appreciated!

Quickest: You can create a new projects with custom 1080 settings then copy the 720 timeline and paste it to the 1080 project TL.
Of course, most of the time it's best to let FCP determine the project settings automatically determine the project settings from the first clip.

  • G5 Dual 2 GHz won't smoothly play 720 or 1080 HD Quicktime Trailers

Dual Processor Power Mac G5 2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM
I could have sworn that my G5 used to be able to play all levels of HD movies smoothly as anything sometime during normal Tiger usage.
Then one day, I noticed my G5 when on Tiger would stutter playing anything about 480.
I thought the upgrade to Leopard would fix this. But just today I upgraded to 10.5.3 on this G5 (I used the upgrade option on the install DVD to upgrade from Tiger) and it STILL won't play HD trailers 720 or 1080 smoothly.
is this supposed to be? Do I not have the minimum requirements to watch those kinds of resolutions anymore?
I know this machine is 4 years old now, but seriously? That seems crazy to me.
Does anyone else have this configuration and see similar or different behavior?
    thank you

at least I finally hear of someone else w/ the same issue
your machine should, in my opinion, completely be able to play HD quicktime movies.
the funny thing for me is that once, I had 10.5.1 (or even 10.5.2) on a FW drive, and I COULD play them smoothly when booted from it
    and now that I have 10.5.3......I can't

  • FCPX upload to youtube in 1080, but showing up on youtube as 720

I have been using the direct upload to YouTube feature on Final Cut Pro X now for several months and I have never had an issue until now. Today I went to upload a video like I always do, in 1080, and after uploading to YouTube the quality is only showing as 720. Why in the world is this going on when it has always shown up in 1080 for a while now. Could this be an issue on the YouTube side, or is it problem on my end?

both of your videos are avail in shiny 1080HD:

YT needs a while to process higher res.
    when I upload my 720p project, I can see: first 360 avail, then 480, finally 720 ....

  • Shoul I buy a 720 or 1080 LCD for my APPLE TV?

I want to be able to run high res images from my iPhoto library slideshow to the LCD via the Apple TV. I see great prices at COSTCO on LCD's but their employees are not mac savvy.
Can someone kindly advise if a 1080 HD LCD is overkill vs. a 720 HD LCD? I will use a HDMI cable to connect.
Thanks for you advise in advance.

I believe that the Apple TV is limited to only 720p output at this time. The device does offer settings for connection to both 720 and 1080p or i compatible TV sets. I would still recommend you go with the 1080p set because it is probably only a matter of time until the ATV offers 1080 resolutions. It also depends on the size of screen you are looking to purchase. If you are going to go with 36" or smaller then 720p will be fine. If you are looking at anything larger than 36" then I would go with the 1080p. On the smaller screens the human eye cannot tell the difference between 729 and 1080, but you can most certainly see the difference on the larger screens.

  • Combine 720 and 1080 video of the same performance?

In early November I have been asked to video a performance. I have 720 and a 1080 cameras. What can I expect when I edit. I will be using jus one camera for audio source. I am using OS 10.8.5. Plan to use iMovie, but Final Cut Express is available.

I would just buy a new kit: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Pavilion%20g6-2040nr&Cat=RAM
    It's less than $40.

  • Batch scale a bunch of clips to 720 from 1080

    Howdy folks,
Just starting shooting 1080 but always cut at 720.  Is there a way to scale all my source pics to 720 before dropping them on the timeline (or a preset or something that I can apply).
Currently I insert the clip into the timeline then go motion>scale and type in 67.  Its a bit of a pain in the bum to do this manually for each clip
Also while I'm at it is there a way to get the default handles on each clip on the timeline to come up as time remapping rather than opacity?

As so often when one asks a question about workflow it comes after a moment of "there must be a better way than this"
So I answered my own question - went to keyboard shortcuts and assigned a shortcut to clip>video>option>scale to frame size.  And also found the ctrl-R shortcut for speed/duration.
If theres a better way, I'm all ears
Still would like to know if you can set the default handles to "time remapping though"

  • Synchronized clips default to 720 not 1080

I do mostly 2-camera shoots with external audio which do sync well in FCPX, a feature I appreciate though I am having some real difficulty with it.
First, and most importantly, the resulting compound clip defaults to 720 23.98 instead of 1080 29.97, despite setting the project properties correctly and the original clips being 1080 29.97.
Working with the resulting compound clip is also proving to be a major issue -

Here is an easy work around...
FYI - I shoot video with the Canon 7D and record audio with the Zoom H4n.
    Syncronize your clips
Select the new synced clip; then select New Compound Clip in the FILE menu
Select the appropriate settings with the CUSTOM options
The new compound clip is Synced in your desired settings and can be dropped into the timeline
BTW- Be sure to deselect the audio captured by the camera mic in the audio menu for best results, otherwise the synchronization process will defualt to including the audio from the camera and your external mic.

  • Upscaling 720 to 1080 and downscaling 1080 to 720

    Hi all...
I'm editing a largely talking-heads documentary. We shot most of the interviews on a DSLR in 1080 24fps. I've been editing in a 720p ProResLT sequence, so that I can take advantage of the "extra" resolution by zooming in to 100% at times. (Also, the DSLR shots aren't the sharpest, so this way the softness is not as obvious.) I plan to master to 720p ProResLT.
The issue however, is that when creating a DCP for some theatrical screenings, this exported 720 master is going to be scaled back up to 1080.
So my question is, which is preferable with 1080 footage when I
    a) want to zoom in by 130% for closeups pretty often and
    b) when in some cases it will need to be delivered/projected at 1080:
    1) Edit in a 720 sequence so that the zoomed-in shots will not be scaled larger than 100%, export a 720p master, but then for the DCP scale that master back up to 1080. So in the DCP, shots that were originally 1080 at full quality, would now be 1080 up-rezed from 720 which was downrezed from the original 1080 footage.
    2) Edit in a 1080 sequence, the zoomed in closeup shots will be at 130% and thus not full quality, export the file for the DCP at 1080 from this sequence - and at least the non-zoomed-in shots would be at full quality, ie 100% and not larger. And then for the 720p Master (if there is a point in having one) I would either nest that 1080 sequence into a 720 timeline, or I would import the exported 1080 master file into a 720p timeline. But in the 720 export, the shots that I scaled up to 130% in the 1080 timeline will now have been scaled back down to 100%. I'm not sure if quality is lost going up and down like that, in either option 1 or 2.
Also, is there a difference in quality between screening a 720 film where the projector upscales the image vs upscaling the image before exporting and exporting a 1080 version?
    Thanks!

My two cents (worth exactly 2 cents)
Continue editing as you have to take advantage of the reframing ability. I would probably change the final output to ProRes 422, but that is your call.
When complete and you need to deliver a 1080 version, have the uprez done by hardware such as a Teranex:
    Blackmagic Design: Teranex Express
    MtD

  • Exporting 720 to 1080

Hi. I'd like to export a 720p file with a Component Y'CbCr 8-bit 4:2:2 codec as a 1080 prores Quicktime. What are the best export settings? Should I use  max render quality?

This what you are doing!  Cropping is not your issue. Scaling up ..is!

  • 720 not 1080 ?

hi i am new here and just placed an order for bt vision after many happy years with sky. ( sky broadband far too slow at new house so thought i would change everything)                                                                                                               i have just seen a post saying that the vision box does not support 1080 hd. if this is true i will not be going through with the order.
Can anyone confirm this for me. In this day and age what is the point of high speed broadband when you cannot watch full hd films. I am shocked.

    Hi,
At the moment the only HD content you can get are chargeable downloaded on demand HD films/programmes. Where Freeview is concerned, the box cannot display the four HD channels, as it does not contain a HD DVBT2 tuner.
In saying all the above, a new YouView HD box is expected to be released anytime form Sept onwards but no details as yet have been released, so please don't quote me on that.

  • Covert movie from 720 to 1080

My Movie clips won't save in 1080?
They started out as very high res
but the 1080 button not active?

What was the resolution of the first video clip you put in the project?   I believe it is this which sets the resolution for the project in iMovie 10.  It then won't let you save to a higher resolution.
