OTA UPDATE when ROOTED?

Greetings to all,
Before my question, I am currently running at this specification:
Model C903
Android version : 4.2.2
Firmware : xxxxx .257
Rooted? : YES
No CWM installed. Stock kernel and Rom.
I would like to ask if it's okay to update OTA while I'm rooted? the reason I didn't update before is because I might lose my game data/progress if I was just going to flash a fresh stock ROM, update and root - restore the game data using TBP.
I once experienced it that restoring app data from different android version isn't possible, got nothing to do but stopped playing that game.
Now, i guess my software version is really outdated so I am asking here for some help.I am thinking that updating OTA will best ensure my game data but i do not know if there's any side effect in updating OTA while being rooted because I cannot afford to re-flash a fresh FW atm.
Thank you in advance.

My Z1 was rooted when i get it new (T-mobile branded).
If you update OTA then your Android device will be unrooted.
If you want to have a uptodate rooted Android, then disable ota updates, and check if their is a updated rom that is rooted or that can be rooted, and use rom manager to flash that. (keep in mind to be sure you use the right rom, otherwise you brick your Android device).

  • Let us know when you personally receive the ICS OTA update!

We are all tired of frequently Googling for when Verizon is going to officially release the Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update for our HTC Rezounds. Please feel free to add to the discussion about the update, but most importantly, let us know when you personally receive the ICS OTA update!
...so we can stop wasting valuable hours every day just Googling...

The only reason I bought the Rezound was because the sales person assured me it would be getting the ICS update in April.  LIES, LIES, LIES.  Will be very glad when my contract is up!!!
That surely can't be the only reason...the HTC Rezound is a BEAST! With or without ICS.

  • IPad fails to connect to WiFi after OTA update to iOS 6

After the OTA update to iOS 6 my new iPad fails to connect to my WiFi network at home. My LANCOM router reports the following issue:
    Index: 62294
    Zeit: 19.09.2012 21:08:28
    Interface: WLAN-1
Ereignis: Rejected Association from WLAN station xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx []: ()

It has worked flawlessly in the past with iOS 5 on my new iPad and iPhone 4. At the moment I hestitate to update my iPhone too.
Anyone with the same issue or an idea how to fix it?
Thanks in advance, greetings from Stuttgart (Germany),

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Have a lead on the OTA update problems!

FIRST, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!... Whoever is responsible for FINALLY giving us our own discussion space!!!!
I am only going to post this here rather than try to update all the postings regarding the OTA update issues.  I hope people will find their way to it!
I experienced rapid battery drain, severe overheating & endless boot-looping after the OTA update (among other more minor problems posted in the main Android forum). I had to factory reset and have been trying to determine what the problem might be. I have had discussion with VZW & HTC about this problem.
After leaving my phone as a stock out of the box phone with the update for a week, I started adding back my Apps. Eventually I had the same problem.  I factory reset my phone and installed each App 1 at a time.
I discovered that WeatherBug Elite is causing major problems on the HTC Rezound post OTA firmware update. The HTC Rezound has 3 location services - Verizon Location Services, Standalone GPS and Google Location Services.  The default is for only the GPS and Google services to be turned on. If the WeatherBug city is set to Current Location and Verizon Location Services is turned off then the device battery will rapidly drain.  It will also SEVERELY OVERHEAT (130 degrees+) & eventually begin endless boot-looping.  At this point the phone has to be factory reset.
If Verizon Location Services are turned on then setting the city for Current Location does not cause this problem.  If you turn Verizon Location Services off after the Current Location has been set then it is OK until you change locations and it has to update. Then its back to severely overheating and eventually endless boot-looping.
This does not happen on the free version of WeatherBug.
Verizon included a new process - Verizon Location Agent in the OTA update.  This must have something to do with the problem.   All my other Apps that use a Current Location setting do not have this problem.  I suspect that there may be other older Apps with a Current Location setting that might cause this same problem. This has been causing much stress and problems for HTC, Verizon and their customers.  People have been going thru multiple phones thinking that it is a problem with the phone but it continues to happen.  HTC and Verizon have acknowledged that there is some problem with the update and they are now investigating it but really didn't have a lead on what it might be since only some customers were experiencing these problems.
I spent 14 hours diagnosing and trouble-shooting the problem all last night.  You have to put the phone to sleep & wait long enough for WiFi & the GPRS data to be turned off.  When you wake the phone & wait for 'No Service' on the lock screen to change to 'Verizon Wireless' then it will immediately start the endless uncontrollable boot-looping. It will also happen if you restart the phone.  I have done this on a factory reset phone with the OTA update installing one App at a time and WeatherBug Elite was the only one that caused the problem.  I do not know if this is true for 4G-LTE as I am not in a 4G-LTE area and keep it turned off.
I wanted to pass along this information I discovered.  I hope I am remembering all the steps. I had it doing it every time. I did more factory resets last night than you could believe.  You need to see the "No Service" on the lock screen when you wake up your phone. This has something to do with it also. I'm so tired now that I can't see straight.  I'll recheck this after I've had a nap.

Because some people have problems with the updates and some don't, I've often wondered if it had to do with specific apps that some have on their phones and others don't. I never had any problems with my Thunderbolt updates. This one for the Rezound isn't a problem either, but I essentially have the same apps on it that I did on the Bolt. I've never cared for Weatherbug ever since they originally came out on the PC and I got buried in spam. If you haven't tried it yet, you might also try "Weather, Radar, Alerts, Quakes by Elecont software. It's the best weather app I've found and has never given me any problems. I tried BeWeather and didn't like it as well.
    https://market.android.com/details?id=com.Elecont.WeatherClock&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5FbGVjb250LldlYXRoZXJDbG9jayJdhttp://
What you're doing by eliminating them one at a time is time consuming, but the best route. There may still be something wrong with the phone itself. I've never had a problem with the boot looping. Also, mine gets up to around 120 to 125 degrees if I'm charging it while using it heavily for streaming videos/movies, but I've never hit the 130's like you have. I did have the led's flash red/green at me at about 125. I also haven't had any of the other problems you seem to be having, so I can't be much help other than to let you know that there are Rezounds that don't have all of those frustrating, headache causing problems.
I've lost track in your posts, so forgive me for asking the obvious, but have you exchanged it for a CLN replacement(s) and tried new batteries? Are you still using a standard battery, or an extended? The extended batteries don't seem to be having the overheating problems that the standard batteries are, but if you have a bad phone, it may not make much difference.
Sorry about the problems and frustration

  • Froyo OTA Update broke my Exchange Account!

I received the "official" OTA update last night for my Droid and installed it this morning.  My corporate exchange account worked wonderfully before the installation and has been since I got the phone on it's release date.  After the installation, it's broken.  I've tried deleting the account and re-entering it and just get a message that advises that it's unable to connect to the server.
I've found that this has happened to many who have used the FRG01B update that VZW rolled out.  Anyone hear of a solution to this problem?  VZW, is there any plan to fix this bug?  I need my email and calendar back!!!  It's part of the reason I got this phone in the first place!

first, let me tell you about my "registering on these forums" experience.  I tried over and over and it would not let me register.  silly little errors like, "your registration cannot be completed, try again later."
Nonetheless, I have seen a few postings about how Froyo hoses Exchange(Corporate)e mail and I wanted to talk about why it is happening.   I was finally able to register from within my myverizon account, I could not do it any other way.  Also, got a page cannot be displayed error when I tried to click the support  site for the community/blog.
    Anyway, the solution:
It looks like Froyo is forcing the use of a certificate on your Exchange portal.  It really is that simple.  Your Exchange Admin just needs to put a cert on the portal and then enable SSL.  That is all it takes, then on your phone, select to use SSL and Accept all Certs in the Inbound Accounts settings.  For some reason, corporate mail does not work without SSL, even if you uncheck the box.
Most people won't have this problem since they probably already have a cert on the mailserver portal.

  • OTA update despite formerly open bootloader?

    Hi there,
some time ago I had my boot loader unlocked. But I locked it again with flash tool. Currently I use a pre rooted Lollipop I installed via recovery.
What I find strange is, I get a message about a system update and I get this message via OTA!?
Is it possible you are offered OTA updates, althought once the boot loades was unlocked!?
Has SONY changed its policy regarding OTA updates once the BL was unlocked (and may be locked again)?
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unlocked or not you would still receive the notification - However that's not to say it will work as it would normally say something like Modified software detected and thus fail to proceed to update

  • OTA Update for Thunderbolt

I've read posts here and talked to techs saying that the OTA update is supposed to be today and well it's today so is it delayed? Just wondering I've checked a few times and it says no new software available. Anyone have an idea of when?

Well the page below should be updated before OTA actually starts rolling out.
    http://support.vzw.com/system_update/thunderbolt.html
yeah......and when i signed up for email alerts for the tbolt you would've thought i would have recieved an email prior to it actually being on the shelves. i doubt that page will be updated until they've already started pushing it. and even if it is, it's easier to check your phone for available updates, than to check the site every morning. i just find it easier (and less frustrating) to wait until i see everyone on the forum talking about actually recieving the update, than to count on verizon to actually clue us in....or even know themselves, when it will happen. heck, they advertised this phone in the best buy ads and ran tv commercials for it for a month before they even knew when they would release it....lol.

  • OTA update messes up Incredible

We have three DINCs.  One of them got an OTA update on Sunday morning (1/3/11) that has messed up the phone.  It has the following issues:
    1) Many apps act as if they are being opened for the first time, EACH time they are opened, IF they open.
    2) Majority apps won't open, FORCE CLOSE.
    3) Handscent sends messages from the previous day when you power off and back on again, i.e. they seem to be stuck in the queue.
    Recommendations for next steps?
    Thanks in advance.

My first choice is a battery pull, but I doubt that will correct it. But all three of your devices are showing the same thing. So I suspect a corrupt OTA download.
I would say to next do a master reset, but if you have time for just one phone, delete the apps and reinstall and see if that clears up the issue.

  • OTA update for A10-70 failed "no command"

I just updated using the OTA update available for my A10-70 and when it rebooted, it says "No command" .  I can get to the recovery, and I tried doing a factory reset on it, but the tablet still won't boot.  Any ideas?  Is there a factory image I can use somewhere to do the adb sideload?  I'm stuck.

Well, I found the rar file, but how on earth do I install this thing?  I tried looking at the instructions on their website (translated into english) but there's missing screenshots and the russian doesn't really translate well into technical instructions.
    ROM: http://bit.ly/1qBphja
The only options for me on the tablet when it boots up is going into recovery (can't connect via ADB), or going into the "apply update from ADB) which gives me access for ADB Sideload,  or going into fastboot (can't connect via ADB).  In a nutshell, where do I need to be when I run the flash tool?

  • Incredible 4g OTA update not showing up

Incredible 4g supposed to get an OTA update. I know many people have gotten the update. My phone does not prompt for an update.
I also try to search for the update through the "Software Update" section in settings but when I click that, it just searches for a couple seconds, and then disappears...
it doesn't even mention "No Update Available" like it usually does...the dialogue just disappears
anyone know why this may be? or a way to fix it?

        Hi there Somerandomname1!
I happy that you're eager to get an update to your phone! I always try to keep my electronics up to date as well.
Ann definitely made a good point and that could be the case. I would also recommend to clear out some space on your phone, just in case. Sometimes the updates won't push through if there's not enough room!
Just do a bit of spring cleaning on your phone such as removing unused applications or moving them to the sd card. You can also delete old text and email messages!

  • IOS 7 - OTA Update or iTunes

    Hello guys!
    I have one more question
When iOS 7 comes out should I update via OTA or via iTunes?
When I make it via OTA update, there could be little system errors or the iPhone/iPad will be much slower.  Isn't it so??
When I make it over iTunes the iPhone/iPad will be clean and fresh installed but there could be problems with the iOS 6 backup (so I will set it up as new iPhone)!
Please leave your opinion what method is better for the idevices :)
    Thomas P.

I've udated both ways. They both work fine. Unless your having trouble with your current phone, iOS 6 data is not going to make anything "buggy". The one thing to note about OTA updates, is that, yes, it requires 2-3 gigs of free space on the phone to complete the update. Updating using iTunes only requires the size of the update, which is much less.
Do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.
    Best of luck.

  • IOS OTA update failed, now iPad wants to restore, but that fails too

After successfully doing the iOS 5.0.1 update on my iPhone via OTA, I started the process with my iPad2. After a while it appeared to have stalled, but I had to go out, so I left it, assuming it would be done when I got back. As it turns out, when I returned my iPad was asking to be connected to iTunes via USB. When connected, I got the message that it needed to be restored...
So, I've now tried restoring it about 4 times - the progress bar on the iPad gets about 2/3 of the way and then stalls for a long time, and then I get a message in iTunes that the restore didn't work. I've disconnected all other USB devices. I've rebooted my iMac. My iMac is fully up to date (OS, iTunes, etc)
Any ideas what I can do to get my iPad restored so I can then restore from backup and retry the iOS update (connected to the iMac this time)?
    Thanks,
    Scott

I sure disagree with the journanlists reporting Over The Air Updates working well.
We all have different experiences. I had the issue that you report when I upgraded to iOS 5. I eventually had to put my iPad in recovery mode to get the upgrade to complete. I did not have any issue with the iOS 5.0.1 update. I did not use OTA, I used USB, so my Mac downloaded the entire 750 MB iOS file and I was still updated in less than 10 minutes. The OTA update should normally also be about 10 minutes as the file is a 50 MB incremental update. I do not think that many folks had your issue because we are not being swamped by reports of the issue here in the ASC as we would be if the issue was widespread. So the journalists seem to have it right, it appears to have gone smoothly for most folks, however they updated.

  • IOS 5 OTA update server and/or port?

Does somebody know iOS 5 OTA update server and/or port for iOS updates?

I had this problem too, you probably have Restictions enabled on your iPhone.
Go to Settings>General>Restrictions Then Disable Restrictions. This should enable both iCloud and Twitter.
When you are finished with iCloud you can Enable Restrictions again.
    Good luck

  • Update for Root Certificates for Windows 7 [March 2014] (KB931125) Expired

    Hi All
Today i wanted to deploy the security updates of the month march 2014 to my production environment.
I noticed that the update "Update for Root Certificates for Windows 7 [March 2014] (KB931125)" is Expired
Strange last week I added this update in our Acceptation environment with no problems.
Someone knows what happend to this update , i cannot find it on the microsoft site
    regards
    Johan

    Hi Yan Li,
I don't understand what you're trying to say.
Why do you quote that old information from the KB article? It's not really relevant to the update Johan asked about because the December 2012 version of KB931125 is not the same update that was released on March 11, 2014 which then immediately expired.
It's not only the server updates that have been expired this time. It's the Windows 7 update and the Windows XP updates as well. I don't have any other OS versions in my managed environment so I don't know which other OS versions it affects but my guess is
it's expired on all of them.
It would be nice with some real information about why this particular version (March 2014) was recalled.
If there is a problem with it I would like to know what kind of problems I'll be facing on the clients that did install it before it expired.
And if there is a problem with it, will there be an interim fix available? Will a new update be released and if so- when?
Can you please see if you can provide us with some relevant information?
