Othe Oracle products on Linux
When will OEM2.1 be available for Linux? I know most of it is Java, so, theorhetically, it should run, but I'm more concerned about the management server. Has anyone gotten it to work?
Also, did I miss the announcement for Developer 6i on Linux? If I didn't, is there any version on Linux? I know it has been in the works for awhile now.
Good work on 8iR2. I've heard a lot of good things. Going to try it myself this weekend.
Peace
my regrets for the error in the above message .... pls read as follows:
"it IS recommended to install various products, like OID or IAS, on different machines " ....

Who will install ORACLE software on linux production environment?
Hi Friends,
there is a doubt for me on ORACLE software installation. i.e. who will install ORACLE software on linux production environment. either system admin or else ORACLE DBA.
If DBA means, whether system admin will share the oracle root password.,
If SYS admin means how DBA parameters during installation.

If SYS admin means how DBA parameters during installation.I have a doubt - about needing any parameters during a software-only install.
Since every version of Oracle available now (except 11.2) needs patches, a new installation should not create the database right away. Therefore, a software-only install is the most reasonable thing to do. And if no DB configuration parameters are required at s/w-only time, then it makes somewhat sense for the SysAdmin to do the install.
Therefore, it makes sense to me that the two groups (DBA and SA) might want to work ... together. (ROFLMAO) -

AFTER UnlockHi,
As you have mentioned that the sysman account was locked I would recommend to change the sysman password as per below doc to ensure the password is consistent at both config file and DB level

Then try accessing the DBcontrol using below URL

Hi there!
The first thing you should do if you get ANY (almost) error when
installing Oracle Server in RedHat Linux v6,0 is to read this
document carefully: http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/
After hours of struggle it finally worked for me :-)))))
Only two things to add here:
1) If you want to be able to connect to the Linux server
(telnet) and running utilities like sqlplus locally on the
server, you should copy the ".profile" file to the users home
directory, add the user to the group "dba" AND make sure that
the $ORACLE_HOME directory has execute permissions for members
of the "dba" group (mine had default ONLY permission for the
owner to execute).
2) The file "listener.ora" was (for some reason) written
with "oracle_sid" where it really should say the real SID name
that is in my case "ORCL".
I just can't thank the guy who wrote the step-by-step

I think the installation of Oracle database under Oracle Linux is the least troublesome because you an install the "oracle-validated" package, which takes care of software prerequisites and system parameters. Enterprise Linux is however not suitable for Desktop and Laptop systems. For the purpose of development or evaluating Oracle products I suggest to use Virtualbox http://www.virtualbox.org. If your system is too old or not well equipped to support virtual systems, consider a hardware upgrade or try the howto's above. -
ORA-00601 Error using JDBC, Oracle 8i on Linux
Hello,
Spatial is considering using Oracle as its database platform. I was assigned
the task of benchmarking the two platforms. So, I downloaded the latest copy
of Oracle for Linux, version 8.1.6.1.0 ( 8i Enterprise Edition Release 2 ).
I'm using RedHat 6.2, with a 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel. I ran the installer, set
up the databases, and everything seemed to be running quite nicely. I copied
a table and its data from mysql to Oracle, and wrote a java program to
benchmark the two. This java program takes command line arguments, the first
one being the connection URL, the second being the number of threads to
start, the third being the number of operations to complete for each thread.
So, if you pass it connection 35 35, it will open 35 threads, and each
thread will then execute 35 selects, inserts, and updates. These are
hard-coded queries, but they mimic the functionality currently in
production.
Oracle bombs on the update. I turned tracing on, and tried it again, with
the same result. Here's an excerpt from one of the trace files:
*** SESSION ID:(4.1) 2000-06-21 16:36:48.937
kvotenlg: epc_collect failed. EPC error: -1073751468.
CDF: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/otrace/admin/cdf/styorap0
FDF: /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/otrace/admin/fdf/oracled.fdf
kvotenlg: epc_collect failed. ctx:368.
I was not able to find any information regarding this error. However, this
message ( or one very similar ) appeared in every trace file. I get the
following at the end of the pmon_xxxx.trc file:
Load Indicator not supported by OS !
*** 2000-06-21 17:42:19.122
error 601 detected in background process
And, the following in the alert_sid.log file:
Wed Jun 21 17:42:19 2000
PMON: terminating instance due to error 601
Instance terminated by PMON, pid = 3797
I made the assumption that this error was actually ORA-00601, and took a
peek on the internet for relavent information. The canned error message is
"PMON process runs into lock conflict trying to recovery processes". I found
someone who had a similar problem, who suggested setting mts_max_dispatchers
in the initsid.ora file to 1. However, this did not work.
Basically, when Oracle crashes, the java program is trying to update one
column in 1225 rows, 35 times, for 35 threads. The java exception is below.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before? Is this merely a
misconfiguration on my part? Help! :)
-nedSorry for the long delay in reply. I was using the thin client driver. However, when I switched to the oci8 driver, not only did I observe a 300% increase in speed, but this bizarre occurrence disappeared. I did find one issue with the oci8 driver, as follows.
In this thread program, if I created a connection in the main program before any of the threads were instantiated, and when the first thread attempted to create a connection, it would produce a segmentation fault. This behavior was very easy to replicate, and it did not matter whether or not I close the original connection. This problem was circumvented by moving the code in the "main" program to create its connection after the child threads had created theirs. -
Hi,
This is my configuration : Linux Mandrake 8.0 & Oracle 9i.
My problem occurs when i run "./runInstaller". Nothing happens, no error.
I have 3 directories Disk1, Disk2 & Disk3 in /TEMP/ (just my example).
I created " groupadd dba " ... and a user oracle. No problem!!
I saw the doc on "www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.html" but my problem is always here.
I didn't install the JDK.....is it ok???
I need download the JDK????
Which version???
I don't know.
Thanx to help me!
Have a good day.
VincentJoseph
I am installing 9i r2 on Mandrake 8.1 and have followed your instruction (as best I could) but I am having installation problems.
1. The fonts for JAVA are not being read correctly, but the install does begin. I am not installing from the console but using VNC to get to my little server.
2. Everything goes fine until I get the error "can't write to file ...jtc.h". I have tried to change permission ( chown 777) on file with no luck.
Exception String: Error in writing to file /data/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0/javavm/jahome/jtc.h
3. After that error, I then continue to get error throughout the install, until I just cancel
4. Do I have to make the set_shmmax change...I previously had 8.1.7 installed and had made a kernal memory change?
5. I did not change the "binutils"
Thanks for your help

Oracle on alternative Linux platforms
Does anyone knows whether Oracle will support Linux on
alternative hardware platforms (like PowerPC or Alpha) or not?
If not do you know a database with Outer-Joins (Postgresql has
not) and subqueries (Mysql has not) support for Linux/PowerPC?
Thanks in advance.

I had the same question (Oracle on Alpha )
and asked altavista ;+)
The answer is yes, but only shipped for x86.
I think, we ( the customers ) have to ask Oracle
for their products on different hardware plattforms...
Pleas read this:
http://www.idg.net/crd_linuxworld_9-125976.html.
Maybe, DB2 runs on PowerPC, because IBM sponsors the
Linux development on their plattforms.
