"Other" category in iPhone

This is about the storage on my 16GB iPhone 4S. iOS 5.1 if that makes a difference.
My phone is full, and I've been deleting pictures and apps to free it up. However, a big chunk of space is lost to the "Other" category. 2 gigs to be exact. I have tried deleting the cache/cookies/history on Safari, it removed 0.07 gb.
So I have two questions,
First of all, what is this 2 gigs of space for "other" being used for?
I have no tabs open on safari, and as I said, I cleared all temporary files. I also do not have a significant amount of calendar entires, 10 at the max. I have heard that it is the iOS, but my 16 gig iPhone shows up as 13.8 gig on iTunes, so I would assume that the missing 2.2 gig would be lost to the iOS, no?
And second, how can I recover this space?
I have heard restoring, but what kind of restore in specific? Can it be from backup, or must it be fully reset to new? I do not want to lose my text messages, so I'd rather not set up as new. Or is there another option?
Thanks in advance

Restoring from backup helped me slightly. It went down to 0.8 gb, but its back to 2 gb again.
What you can do, and I am going to soon, is see if it's something that is a problem with just your phone. I'm going to back up my phone, and move the back up. I'm then going to restore the phone to new. If the phone still has a large "other" category, it is specifically a phone problem and I will go to the apple store to see about them fixing it. If its not there anymore, I'm not sure what I'm going to do because I don't want to lose all my information.
Then of course when I'm done I'm going to put my back up back onto my phone. But you have to be sure to move your back up before you do the initial restore to new, because if your phone syncs while in the new state, it will wipe out your back up.

  • What is included in the "other" category on iphone?

when looking at the storage space available on my iphone, there is a large amount of space taken up by "other" (almost 2 GB an dI only have 16 GB). I want to add other things to my phone, but I don't have enough space. The "Other" category only seems to grow and doesn't decrease (like when I delete apps and music, it seems to stay close to the same while apps and music go way down). How can I remove some of this "other" stuff?

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it delete cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.

  • What is considered to be under the "other" category in Iphone storage?

My phone says its storage is full but I have very small amounts of pictures and music and apps.  According to the graph that comes up when I sync my phone, my phone is filled up of mostly "other"  I do not know what is contained in this "other" category and I want to reduce my storage.

"Other" is anything that does not fit in the other defined catergories.
Other is typically 200mb to approximately 1GB.  Anyting significantly over 1GB is likely corruption.  Restore the device from backup, if that does not reduce the size of other, restore as new.

  • How can I stop the "other" category from taking up all the remaining space on my iphone 4?

I have an iphone 4 that is unlocked (when my contract ended, I called AT&T and unlocked the phone since I was going abroad and needed a new carrier) and the "other" category is out of control. It was at about 3GB and I did everything possible to try to remove it - cleared cache, deleted data from apps, deleted messages and voice memos, but nothing worked- it just kept coming.
I reset the phone and restored from back up, and it seemed to fix the problem. But then I checked it again and the "other" category is steadily creeping up again. It went from 500MB to 3.5GB again in about two hours. It seems to be just trying to take up all of the remaining space available on the phone.
Is my only option to restore the phone completely and not restore from any of the potentially infected back up data?

Thanks, Thomas. I can see the data usage by app, but that's the problem- there is nothing that it taking up that much space. The largest ones are these:
Whatsapp: App size: 61.8MB, Data and documents 108 MB
Facebook: App size: 91.2MB, Documents and data: 49.3MB
    Photos and camera: 131MB
I systematically went through and deleted all of my conversations in messages, so I know that there are no photos/ videos hiding there.
I really think that it's coming from something I can't see, especially since it's still there after resetting to factory settings and restoring from backup.
There only reason there is 1.75GB of available space is because I deleted all of my music so that at least it wouldn't be over capacity!! This is so frustrating!

I cannot add an e-mail account (Cox communications) on my iPhone 5S that is in the "Other" category and is a POP account.  Yhje phone automatically creares the account as IMAP.  How do I create a POP account?

    This indicates corrupt files.
    A restore should resolve.

Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

  • HELP!!!!!!  What does the "Other" category mean when iPhone is on iTunes???

    Hey,
I was fixing to sync my 3G iPhone when i realized i didnt have enough room for what i wanted because the "other" category is taking up so much space. Ive reset iTunes and iPhone but still see so much space taken up by "other." I've deleted all emails and texts and only have a few pictures on my iPhone but the "other" still takes up over 3gigs on my iPhone.
What is the "other" section and how do i get rid of items that the phone puts in the "other" category???
Also, as another seperate problem, i believe, i cant seem to locate the application link in my itunes library anymore for some reason even though the tab under the iPhone device link recognizes my applications in iTunes. How do I get the Applications link back in my iTunes library?
    THank you so much!!!

    OK,
I checked my prefernces and you were right, the applications weren't checked. Thank you.
As far as my "other" problem.....before i do the restore, how do I backup my iPhone? When i clicked on restore a moment ago it said it will erase my phone but i thought that iTunes periodically backedup my phone anyways.

  • Why is iPhone Other Category Taking up Half my Phone's Storage?

I have restored my 16 GB iPhone 4S twice, once from iTunes and once from iCloud. I can't get the 8.9 GB of the Other category to go down. The Other category is only a tiny sliver on my iPad. I've read many posts on this problem but have not found a solution that works.

I restored it back to factory default in iTunes. After that I added all of my settings and apps back to the phone from a backup.
Are you saying the only way is to start from scratch and rebuild my entire contact list, apps etc?

  • What does the yellow "other" category mean when syncing my iPhone

i am trying to sync my iPhone with my itunes on my computer.  there is not enough space to sync my iphone.  i know i can limit the amount of music i sync but i don't understand what the yellow "other" category means and it is taking up a lot of space.  please help if you know what that means

It represents something that iTunes doesn't recognize as music, videos, books, podcasts, etc.  Normally, the "other" is limited to a few hundred MBs (operating system, app data, etc).  If it grows to a GB or more, it probably indicates corrupted data from an interrupted sync.  Sometimes adding a new song or app will clear up the problem.  You can always restore from your backup to regain a normal amount of "other".
Note:  During a sync, you'll see the "other" bar grow and shrink.  It doesn't mean anything until the sync is finished.

  • What get's sync'd in the other category on my iphone

When I sync my iPhone 3GS what is backed up in the "other" category?  I would like to find out if I can delete it?
    Thanks
    Sue

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, data created and stored by a 3rd party apps.  You can't delete it.

What about the fontbook not being able to resolve duplicates?
    Try deleting the 'com.apple.FontBook.plist' file.
    HD/Users/yourhome/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.FontBook.plist
any other fnts that can commonly cause problems besides the few that are mentioned all the time?
These two can cause problems 'Times Phonetic' -- 'Rougue Stencil-Type' but probably checked for them.

  • After iOS 5 install on iPhone 4 my "other" category in iTunes is huge.

After iOS 5 install on iPhone 4 my "other" category in iTunes is huge. I can't find any clues as to why. Anyone else have this issue or any clues? I now only have 1gb left whereas before iOS5 I had 9 it's a bit strange. This isn't a complaint btw, just trying to problem solve!
    Gracias.

I have noticed the same thing! Any suggestions???  I also notice that when I uncheck the boxes for not including music videos and voice memos the size of the music folder increases, and it does it so much so that I exceed the space on my phone.

  • IPhone bloated "Other" category

Using an older iPhone 4, current iOS and iTunes (for ML).
Recently when I "sync" the iPhone to iTunes the "other" category in the memory bar bloats to many times the normal size. The best I can tell it seems to duplicate the used memory of all the music, apps, photos, etc on the phone. For example if I have 12gig music, 2gig apps 1.5 gig photos for total of 16.5gig the "other" category will bloat to 16.5gig and create an out of memory situation on the phone, basically "crashes" the sync operation.
I was thinking it was something on the phone itself, and performed a "restore". First using a previous database then again as a new phone. In both situations the bloated "other category" returned.
I'm begriming to think this is an iTunes issue (this is posted on the iTunes forum too).
So my questions are: anyone have a similar situation? is it a phone (iOS)  problem or iTunes? And if iTunes what PLIST or "other" files need to be culled?
    Thanks for the help

OK, technically it is hacked to unlock it, not jailbroken. That doesn't change the fact that the internal firmware is not standard, and the baseband cannot be replaced during a restore. If you restore a phone as New and do no setup at all Other will be small. If it isn't then there is something seriously wrong; some sort of memory corruption.
